    WOO HOO!

They can’t release these sets fast enough for my taste!

Though I confess, it kind of puzzles me why they don’t also release singles like they used to? Wouldn’t that cut down on complications with rights (such as one episode getting recalled, leading all the others to be as well)?

  • 2

    Racket Girls, YES!!!

  • 3
    Jacob says:

I find it odd that there are no Sci-fi era episodes on this set. Not that it will prevent me from buying this set.

  • 4
    The Professor says:

Ugh…can’t we find something better than Robot Vs. The Aztec Mummy to get from season 1? That one hurts my soul.

Other than that, this should a good set. I just got done watching Racket Girls the other night and forgot how funny it was.

  • 5
    Kris says:

    ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE?!? YAYAYAY!

    And look at those extras!!!

It’s not my Russo-Finnish dream set, but it’s pretty damn sweet. Hooray!

    crowschmo says:

I’ve never seen Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy, so that should be good. Not too thrilled with the other three eps. They kind of drag for me. But, oh, well. I’m sure I’ll be handing over my money again for this one anyway. Another MST fix.

I look forward to these episodes because of the two episodes that I have seen, it has been a long time since I saw them.

I am digging these special features.

I knew someone would complain about Season 1 – Im so glad that Saeson 1 shows are coming out and the other 3 make this a fabulous set !! Thank you Shout Factory !

  • 13
    Jane Dobson says:

I’ve never seen these eps, so I’m definitely excited … but where is Pumaman?! They need to release that one :(

  • 14

Oh. Well, good enough I guess. It’ll be nice to have Zombie Nightmare in pristine condition. I really don’t have a clue about the other ones.

I didn’t even buy the last set. I don’t like how they seem to be sitting on the choice titles that are almost certainly attainable.

  • 15
    Keith says:

Ugh Aztec Mummy. That’s a real drag of a season one episode, though it’ll still be interesting to see again I guess.

The other three I haven’t seen, so that’s always interesting.

  • 16
    Cabbage Patch Elvis says:

This is great news! 4 episodes that I haven’t seen before! I have to admit that I kind of like Aztec Mummy movies on their own, but this should be really good. And although I’d love for these to come out a bit quicker (hint!), mid-summer is a wonderful time to get some new episodes. It’s gonna get pretty damn hot after these come out, and it never hurts to have a new excuse to stay out of the sun.

  • 17
    Insert Coin(s) to Continue says:

Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy? Are you SERIOUS? It’s the worst MST3K episode ever. The only one I’d rate at half a star out of five. Baaaad choice, guys.

…Why not Santa Claus or another one of your unreleased treasures?

  • 18
    Edge says:

Come on it’s ‘Big Stupid’! How can you not love Big Stupid?

Four CC episodes, what’s not to love?

  • 19
    Brian says:

Yes! Zombie Nightmare is one of my favorite episodes! (The others being whichever one I watched last…) I just have a crappy VHS copy that rolls and cuts out before the last host segment. Yet I still watch it – which should tell you how much I like it.

I think I saw Aztec Mummy but don’t recall much about it at all. The others are solid eps, from what I recall.

  • 20
    happy says:

Oh quit complaining about episode choices.Aztec Mummy is a chance to look at MST3K in its early stages & this is the only way to see Josh on DVD. I am now in agreement that anything that comes out on DVD in a nice clean transfer is ok with me. I know someday an episode will come out that Im not fond of (well most of the have luckily so I dont have to worry)
Ive waited for Crawling Eye, and the Lippert movies forever, I feel eventually they will come out.
My guess is Zombie Nightmare is the one that just became available late last year so they jumped on it.
Code Red DVD is going to release the non MST3K version of it later this year. Year of the Zombie Nightmare :)

  • 21
    Curious says:

    Looks like fun.

One question though. I remember reading a few weeks ago on the Shout! Factory boards that the announcement on this set was slightly delayed because they unexpectedly got the rights to a film that they wanted to rush onto this set instead of waiting for this next one. The guy said that when it was announced, we’d all understand why they would want to rush to get this out.

While these episodes should be good, does any one stand out as being that spectacular?

  • 22
    outerspace says:

Mmm on a scale of one to ten, I’d probably give it a 2. This ones nothing compared to the last set. Racket Girls is probably the most sub par episode ever. Zombie Nightmare is pretty good. Robot vs. Aztec Mummy should be nice. Extras don’t seem that great though.

I suspect single episodes aren’t produced because consumers would skip over episodes they didn’t like. Being forced to get four at a time means the good and the bad sell through.

As far as the episodes go. Its definitely an okay release. Nothing jumps out at me among my favorites, but they’re all episodes I wouldn’t mind having on DVD. XV sales +1 for me.

    The Toblerone Effect says:

Overall, this is a very good set. I LOVE the fact that SF is releasing Season 1 episodes (I got into the show after BBI and CC agreed to pull them out of circulation). And so what if SF is releasing Season 1 episodes? If Shout! were putting out KTMA episodes, I’m willing to bet that a vast majority of MSTies here would love it! While I had taped “Aztec vs. The Robot Mummy” during the ’95 Thanksgiving marathon, my tape ran short because the episode proved to be longer than I had anticipated. “Girl in Lover’s Lane” is a notch under classic, as is “Zombie Nightmare”. I do think “Racket Girls” is the weak link in this chain, but the boat-load of extras more than make up for it.

My only big disappointment with this is the release date: July 7 is over three months away!

All in all, though, it looks to me like Shout Factory has another great set in the making!

  • 29
    H says:

Good choices. I always enjoy Season 1 eps, so Aztec Mummy is good. It’s the Demon Dogs ep, so even better. Girl in Lovers Lane, I enjoy but not great. Zombie Nightmare is definitely fun but again not great. Racket Girls, very much a fan of the episode.
Now, the extras. Very much looking forward to the ‘glimpse’ of KTMA, whatever it is. Joel and Trace at MIT is very exciting. The interviews with the Zombie Nightmare people sound interesting. Hamlet ADD, too.
Overall, a well balanced set. Volume 14 is still my favorite of the Shout sets but good.

  • 30
    mst3ktemple says:

I love this set. Demon Dogs, Crow doing his Jack Elam impersonation, Batman and Boing. Plus all those extras. Great stuff.

  • 31
    Puma says:

#22, whaddaya mean extras don’t seem that great? There’s an interview with Jon Mikl Thor!

Seriously though, I think Zombie Nightmare and Racket Girls are terrific episodes, and I haven’t seen the other two, so I’m looking forward to those. Ok, the interviews aren’t really anything I’ll watch more than once, I’m sure, but Joel & Trace at M.I.T. could be interesting.

    And what’s this Hamlet A.D.D.?

  • 32
    Travis says:

Awesome! ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE is a delightful surprise (I only just today found out Code Red is releasing it later this year). Excellent selection of episodes. And the extras sound great as well, especially the “Glimpse of KTMA” feature.

    My original Likelihood-for-Release predictions:

ROBOT VS. THE AZTEC MUMMY – Deimos/BCI Eclipse. [LIKELY]

GIRL IN LOVERS LANE – PD. [EXTREMELY-LIKELY]

ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE Anchor Bay [unconfirmed]. [POSSIBLE]

    RACKET GIRLS – PD. [EXTREMELY-LIKELY]

  • 33
    jere7my says:

Speaking as someone who attended the MIT talk, that’s a killer extra. (And not just because I hope I’ll be on it!) It was a fabulous discussion, chock-full of behind-the-scenes goodness, and I’m glad to see it going out to a wider audience.

  • 34
    Alex says:

    Nice
Robot vs the Aztec Mummy is the best season 1 episode in my opinion
A little odd how close they are getting to the start of the show though
Jack Frost and Final Sacrifice will be nice for future releases though

    “Did we hit a moose?”

  • 35
    happy says:

Hey Travis I saw you already took them off the Likelihood list – boy youre quick.
This is the yr. of Zombie Nightmare. I told all my friends about it coming out in both MST and NON MST versions this year.

Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk says:

This set is worth it alone for Zombie Nightmare.

  • 37
    fireballil says:

A very good set. I’m actually watching #101, The Crawling Eye, so I am seeing the show in it’s most primitive form as it debuted on the national stage. Also good to see a glimpse of KTMA. Does this mean that some or all of the host segments of the lost episodes are going to see the light of day?

  • 38
    big61al says:

Who cares if some episodes are less than great? I am so happy to upgrade to “pristine” versions. Even a sub par episode is better than nothing.

A promo for a movie seems like kind of a feeble feature, but whatever.

    #32 Travis

BCI recently went out of business, BTW.

    #36

Don’t give them any ideas! It’s not worth it to me, I already have a pretty decent copy. (recorded it back in the day, so everyone knows)

  • 42
    MikeK says:

Oooh, you have a great copy of Zombie Nightmare. Stop Shout Factory, no one needs Zombie Nightmare because The Castle Monster has a good copy of it recorded from TV.

  • 43
    Captain Cab says:

I love the Sci Fi era but I’m glad to have a break from it this round. Focusing on the CC days is a nice change of pace.

Robot vs. Aztec Mummy is pretty good but if they’re continuing the trend of S1 eps in the sets, I really hope they try to get the Black Scorpion. Best ep of S1 IMHO, good riffing and the Ray Harryhausen effects are fun to watch. Plus the fan copy on the ‘net has a weird purple haze over the movie for some reason.

Other than that, Zombie Nightmare: Hilarious, one of my faves (my favorite line is when psycho boy is melting down in the tastee freeze parking lot and Crow says “Man, I’m gonna go to Dairy Queen next time!” lol) And I still haven’t seen Girl in Lover’s Lane (crazy isn’t it?) nor Racket girls, making this set all the better for me.

Also looking forward to the MIT visit and Hamlet ADD features. Keep up the good work, Shout! Now where’s my Servo figure? ;)

  • 44

It’s not worth $60 to me *by itself*, I guess that’s my point. Maybe you didn’t bother to read the post I was responding to and just couldn’t wait to get anal with someone. I wasn’t being as serious as death about it, anyway.

  • 45

I still find it hard to believe that anyone ever actually complains about episode lists for these sets… If they were to say “This is the last set EVER” then I could understand.

I openly and happily accept any and all episodes they wish to release, ESPECIALLY after that last set, seeing as how the season 1 episode was clearer and cleaner than almost ALL of the releases from Rhino.

  • 46
    Captain Cab says:

I hope they also keep including the sweet pulp art mini posters by Steve Vance. Love those!

  • 47
    Captain Cab says:

    “4 limited edition mini posters.”

    *Slaps his forehead.*

  • 48
    losingmydignity says:

Well, based on that likely/unlikely list and what I humbly call the LMD principle, this set should be no surprise.

Two great to classic eps: Zombie Nightmare (A-) and Girl in LL (A-)
One solid/good ep: Racket Girls (B+)
One middling to not great ep: Robot/Aztec (Season One, who needs to say more?)

    It never fails.

Zombie has a following. It will be nice to see the superb Girl in LL get a bigger audience and Racket Girls deserves more love than it gets.
But I’m afraid this means more Season Ones to come in each set. Ugh.

  • 49

I’ve stated that I’m going to buy the set, so obviously I can’t have an opinion or comment on it unless it’s to shamelessly suck up to Shout Factory. Sheesh…

  • 50
    happy says:

The Black Scorpion effects are by Willis O Brien who brought us King Kong # 43.
Quit picking on Season One ! Its part of their glorious history
Love and acceptance that what The Aztec Mummy needs :)

  • 51
    Cornjob says:

Best Shout Factory set so far.

  • 52
    The Professor says:

I’m not complaining about Shout! releasing a season 1 episode. I’m just complaining that they are releasing the WORST (in my opinion) season 1 episode. All i’m saying is: they better release Robot Monster!

  • 53

There’s no such thing as a bad MST3K set!

  • 54
    Yipe Striper says:

This is the only set so far that there have been more i haven’t seen than those i have.

Zombie Nightmare is one of my faves! i can’t wait for the others.

    rock on, shout!!!

  • 55
    Lou Stoolz says:

Awsome! This’ll be the first Shout Factory set I buy. I’ve been waiting for a CC heavy set.

    This is great news!

  • 56
    StarDustMaiden says:

My message to Shout! – Keep it comin’ luv! Don’t stop it now, don’t stop it no.

I’ve never seen any of these but they sound good to me. Maybe I’ll see if YouTube has these or maybe I’ll wait to be surprised.

Add my vote for Pumaman for Volume XVI.

    And Jack Frost.

And please, can’t I have just one more sacrifice before we go?

  • 57
    Klisch says:

The great thing about the set is, I’ve only seen Robot vs the Aztec Mummy. The other 3 episodes will be completely fresh! Yesssssss!

  • 58
    Eric says:

I only got through about the 1st 20 threads of whining and complaining about episode choice so maybe this was addressed later but…

EVEN THE WORST MST3K EPSIODE IS BETTER THAN ANY OF THE OTHER CRAP ON TV!!!

I will buy this and all future sets. Thank you sir may I have another!

  • 59

    GregS

  • 60
    Cullen says:

Well, it’s not as if I don’t get excited about EVERY release, but this one has me REALLY excited. Two expisodes I’ve never seen (zombie & Racket Girls), One that is up there with my all-time favorites out of my VHS copies(Girl In Lovers’ Lane), and then there’s Aztec Mummy which I love and has been like a holy grail of sorts with me because 14 years ago my dumb-ass roommate taped over my copy by accident and ever since they started releasing the DVD’s I’ve been…you know…sort of hoping. Thanks Shout! Factory. Nice job. Keep ‘em coming!

  • 61
    Bob says:

Girl In Lover’s Lane is hard to watch. The movie was too good in a way and the ending too depressing to make it great MST3K fodder, even the last sketch in the show focused on that problem. With all the great Joel-era episodes yet to be released, why that one?

I LOVE Robot Vs. Aztec Mummy. Happy to see that one and the Commando Cody short is great material too. Hilarious!

Thanks, Shout Factory. Now, can you please release these sets faster? July is a long way off from the last release.

  • 62
    Klisch says:

Sorry Eric, (posting #58) but I’d rather watch an episode of The Office than a MST3K showing.

  • 63
    jason says:

rbot vs aztec mummy- the short and horst segemtns are really good. the movie is unfunny.
girl in lover’s lane-weakest episode of season 5. racket girls-i always like this one. the movie was goofy and the did a good job riffing and the short was funny. Zombie nightmare. is one of my favories. you have to put all of them out including the bad ones. you have to take the good and the bad. i had a feeling girl in lover’s lane would be on dvd eventually.

  • 64
    Holly says:

Wow, already? I just got the last one a couple weeks ago. I’ve only seen one of these episodes, and that was 10 years ago on a borrowed tape, so I’m happy with the selection.

  • 65
    happy says:

    I agree with # 58
Girl in Lovers Lane – for me its very easy to watch Big Stupid. Did you know that Brett Halsey who played “big stupid” was the Fly in Return of the Fly and was in movies like Atomic Submarine. He did B movies
Zombie Nightmare is one of my favorite episodes from the Mike era
I still cant believe Adam West was in this movie ! :?:

  • 66

They’re all good choices (it’s hard to make a bad choice) but I do wish they’d push hard on the movies that aren’t in PD or easy to get (maybe that’s happening and they aren’t making much progress :<(

I really hate season 1 (although I have all the rest of the seasons in pristine broadcast quality DVDs I didn’t even bother with season 1) but I kind of like the idea of releasing one from that season each box set so they’ll be available for those folks who really want to see them (for those who aren’t fanatics but just curious — trust me, that season is really, really bad, with the exception I think of The Black Scorpion).

And, as usual, I’ll buy (even though, as I mentioned, I already have them in great condition). Have to support the show somehow, even after all these years.

  • 67
    Ben says:

It’s gonna be a good summer!

  • 68
    BigZilla says:

I’ll buy it, for sure and definite. For me personally none of them are my personal favorites, but I will (& do) own all official release box sets (was too young to get some the single disc releases as I had no job). Ultimately they are all worth it.

The top releases I am still waiting for:
    Joel:
    The Lost Continent
    Any Gamera movies
    Fugitive Alien II
    Mike:
    The Pumaman
    Final Sacrifice
    Invasion of the Neptune Men

ONE MESSAGE OF DOOM & GLOOM:
I think it was post #20 that said Zombie Nightmare was being released later in the year. While it certainly may not happen, I advocate pre-ordering so if some horrid snafu occurs and the boxed set gets cancelled, you have your set. As someone who owns Godzilla vs Megalon, trust me it can happen. Not trying to alarm anyone or say Shout hasn’t done their homework, I just love the show too much not to get all of these.

  • 69
    frankstv says:

WHY ARE THEY RELEASING ANOTHER SEASON ONE EPISODE AGAIN!!!! ( as they released #103 Mad Monster in the 14th volume ). IS IT BECAUSE JIM IS TRYING TO BE A NICE GUY FOR J ELVIS AND TO GET HIM SOME OF THE MONEY WITH THE DVD RIGHTS?? I AGREE WITH MOST OF YOU THAT SEASON ONE STINKS! I HAVE NO FAVORITES FROM THAT SEASON. WHY CAN’T THEY RELEASE SOMETHING
( anything ) FROM SEASON THREE ( i know, the rights )? I NEVER SEEN EPS #509, #604 + #616 BEFORE SO THIS WILL BE A TREAT FOR ME IN EARLY JULY. I HOPE THEY RELEASE VOLUME XVI LATER IN THE YEAR!!!!

  • 70

Yes Zombie Nightmare is coming from Code Red later this year… # 68
I wonder if the Season 1 haters would be happy if a KTMA show would come out ?

  • 71
    Horkheimer says:

frankstv: I love the Season 1 eps. True they’re not as funny but I love seeing the show’s history. Also if Shout doesn’t mix them in now, they’ll have a pile of Season 1-only sets towards the end which nobody will buy.

  • 72
M "The Evil Judge Robert Bork" Sipher says:

Frankly, I like season 1 a lot more than many of the season 3 episodes, so I’m all for bringing those back. (Most of the Sandy Frank movies I find interminable, and many of the Film Ventures International episodes leave me snoozing.) Please, I want me some [i]Robot Halocaust[/i]. That was my first MST ep ever.

The more “conversational” tone of the series then appeals to me way more than the overly-scripted feel of later eps, and it took a while for MST to finally get back to genuinely feeling like three funny guys watching the movie for the first time.

The other episodes are all solid for me. “Lover’s Lane” amuses greatly largely on the constant harping of Danny’s pure, undiluted stupidity and… well, let’s call a spade a spade and just say how gay Danny is for Big Stupid. It’s adorable. “Zombie Nightmare” is a homerun on all levels, and “Racket Girls” not only has a hilarious short and set of host segments, but really, the earnest cheese (and cheesecake) to me is really amusing.

  • 73
    The Toblerone Effect says:

I just want to pose an argument for Season 1 episodes being released….I agree that, at least from the treatments I’ve seen so far, they are not nearly on par with subsequent seasons. But, there are a percentage of MSTies (like myself) who got into the show after Season One was shelved by BBI and CC, so for us it’s the equivalent of a “lost” episode. Even with “The Robot vs. The Aztec Mummy”, my copy from the ’95 Thanksgiving marathon was incomplete because my tape ran out with about ten minutes to go. So having this episode forever on DVD is satisfying.

Look at it this way: If Travis is right (and he has been to this point), there are only a handful of Season One eps available left to release, and SF could very well be refocusing on later-CC and SciFi-era shows again for Volume XVI.

  • 74
    WouldntYouLikeToKnow says:

Excellent set!! There aren’t any Sci-Fi Channel episodes to muck up the set. Good call Shout Factory.

  • 75
    Gary Bowden says:

 Perfect!!! Plus, great extras, too!! But seriously, can we all do without the mini posters?????

  • 76
    MitchellRowsdowerBeardsley says:

Uhg. I’m glad so many of us are so positive on these boards, but this is the first set I won’t be buying. As said before, Season 1 is ‘interesting’, but has no rewatchability, which is one of the greatest things about MST3K. Heck, BBI didn’t even want them repeated on Comedy Central because they were a ‘work in progress’, people!

And right where there is usually one great Joel episode that makes me buy the set solely based on it – there is Girl in Lover’s Lane, which to me, has always been the least funny Joel ep from seasons 2-5.5. It’s just – there.

Racket Girls is middle of the road Mike CC era. Just okay.

Zombie Nightmare is good, but I’m an old-school Joel fan and this set is really weak, to me. I’ll have to wait for the next one.

and speaking of picture quality as some have listed as their reason to buy the new DVDs – did anyone notice that the actual print of the movie for Manhunt In Space looked way grainier/scratchy than when the actual episode aired. Can anyone confirm this?

Keep ‘em coming Shout!, but please more Season 3/4 (Joel’s best) and Season 8 (Mike’s best).

  • 77
    ForkLiftKiller says:

@ Gary (#75) I agree the posters are a waste of space. I also think they could put a little more effort into the menu screens…they are SUPER-lame. How about using actual music from the movies or something instead of the canned crap that they’re pumping out. And ditch the computer rendering of the bots….looks really DUMB.

But enough criticism, I’m just happy stuff is still getting released.

  • 78
    Michel Weisnor says:

Wow! I wasn’t expecting another set until the last quarter. I’ve got say I am not disappointed.

I’m sure after another viewing many naysayers will find Robot vs The Aztec Mummy is a pretty good episode. It appears as if Commando Cody’s serial episodes are on the plate. The more Season One the better.

The Girl in Lover’s Lane and Racket Girls are two episodes I’ve only seen once in poor quality. So, I can’t complain about them.

Zombie Nightmare is the strongest episode on the list, in my top five. You can’t go wrong with Tom and Mike dressed as Batman and Robin!

Well ole chum that’s all from me. Thanks Shout Factory; keep’em coming!

  • 79
    Travis says:

    #41 The Castle Monster -

I should have said Navarre, not BCI Eclipse/Brentwood. They probably have the rights to AZTEC MUMMY if the set is still in print. If not, Shout probably licensed it from the original rights holders.

    #68 BigZilla –

Shout got the rights either from Code Red, or from the people that Code Red is licensing ZN from, so there should be no issue at all.

Whoever mentioned it above . . . I would love to see an entire set dedicated to the Russo-Finish movies. The Day the Earth Froze, The Magic Voyage of Sinbad, The Sword and the Dragon, and Jack Frost.

If the trailers/promos part is what I think it is, we may get to finally see again what has not been seen for many, many years. To promote a good number of the shows in season 6, BBI recorded their own promos for the new episode with new material utilizing an existing prop or set-up from the upcoming episode. Since these would not air DURING the new episode, the only times that these little tidbits were seen was during other CC programming, or during a MST3K repeat earlier in the week.

Not necessarily masterpieces in and of themselves, they are still unique artifacts for your consideration and mirth.

I REALLY wish that Shout! would put in chapter stops more like Rhino. It just gives you a better way to flip forward if you are trying to get to a certain point in the film or host segment. Not a big issue, I suppose, but I thought I’d throw it out there.

I’m guessing people begging for Sci-Fi episodes over Comedy Central episodes were “late comers to the party”. I don’t believe many MSTies who started with the show in the early seasons and ORIGINAL version of the show would agree with that. The show was great till the end, but no way was it better after Joel left (and then Frank, and then Trace). Give me more episodes 101-512 please, then the rest!

Ohhh, this sounds like a good one to me. I’m not keen on the season one episodes, but so many people like them, I won’t begrudge them. And Aztec Mummy has the completely bizarre demon dog host segments (something I remember with greater clarity than the actual movie!)

The Girl in Lover’s Lane is one of the first episodes I caught. Big Stupid is still a catchphrase used in our house. I’m looking forward to seeing this one again (are we drifting?)

I caught the first half hour of Zombie Nighmare when it first aired and it was hilarious. I’m looking forward to seeing the conclusion.

I never saw Racket Girls, but the description in the ACEG always intrigued me.

I can’t wait for this set. And I enjoy the mini-posters. They decorate my cube at work and give me a little MST3K cheer at work when everything else get’s grey and drab. ;)

    #79 Travis

I have that set. On the side: the prints are horrendous, practically unwatchable. Understandable, considering the difficulty of getting the master prints for old Mexican horror movies but even if such prints exist for these movies they are horribly dreary and dull. The scenes with the backwards-flying cable bat are certainly riffable but not much else.

  • 90

Actually, I started with season three (and Joel) and came to think Mike was a far better host (no, I don’t want to bring up the Mike V. Joel wars, just to point out that not all folks who like later Mike episodes were those who didn’t start with Joel).

But I truly think that seasons 4 through 8 were best — everyone was firing on all cylinders, they knew what they were doing, and there was seldom a “miss” unlike the earlier or later seasons (earlier I think they were just trying to understand the process, and later became burn out, I do believe).

Rights is always going to be the biggest issue, though, and it’s unlikely that some of the choicest episodes will ever see the light of day (which is why I’m glad I already have them on pristine DVDs).

When I saw this announcement yesterday I got a little concerned. It seemed like the announcement for the 20th anniversary set was not too far in advance of when it actually came out (I can’t remember specifically). And the end-of-October release for the 20th anniversary set was followed up really quickly with the announcement for Volume XIV, which went on sale the first week of February. It has taken about 6 weeks since XIV came out for the announcement of XV, but wow–July is quite a ways off compared to the turnaround of 20thAE to XIV. I don’t know much about DVD companies, and trust the people on this board who have lots of faith in Shout!Factory, but does this worry anyone else? Maybe I’m just anxious to see lots of releases!

Also, as far as season one goes, I think you’re a lover or a hater based on when you started watching MST. “Robot Holocaust” is one of my Top 5 episodes–it is just perfect pacing of riffs, and the riffs are hysterical! I love “Untamed Youth” and “Robot Monster” too. But these were among the first episodes I ever saw (1st was “Crawling Eye,” 2nd that I can remember was “Women of the Prehistoric Planet.”) Season one has a completely different feel–is almost a different show–than the Sci-Fi era shows. I agree with #85, the show was great to the end, yet I understand why the season one episodes feel too different for some fans of the show.

Yes, it does worry others here. I was really hoping Shout Factory would keep a MUCH faster pace of release than Rhino did. Waiting so many months between set 14 and set 15 definitely causes concern that the release schedule will slow to a trickle like it did with Rhino. One or two sets per year is not fast.

M "You Can Look Me In The Bubble And Tell Me That?!" Sipher says:

Sci-Fi’s season 8 is some of the strongest MST of all, and Sci-Fi overall contains more of my favorite, must-have, and show-to-non-MST-fan-friends episodes… and I started on MST back in season 1. (Season 2 held much of the same humor, but it wasn’t quite the same without Josh. But it grew with the changes, as we all should.) I ENTIRELY feel it was better during Sci-Fi than it was during the much-vaunted season 3, which I maintain is the series’ low point. So I’m good with a dose of Sci-Fi in every set.

(While I’m on the Unpopular Opinion Train, I’d like to note that Joel and Frank, love ‘em to death, but… well, they got a lot better at acting by season 5, but really…)

And yes, I’d LOVE a collection of those original-content trailers and promos. Season 7′s Turkey Day bumpers would be outstanding. I’d settle for edited versions of the Summer Blockbuster Reviews as well, since obviously rights to all those movies would be a real bear.

If anyone would bother to do the math, they would see that July is in perfect sync with a 3x a year release schedule. XIV came out 4 months after the 20th anniv set, and XV will come out 4 months after XIV. I would expect to see XVI in November, around 1 year after the 20th anniv set’s release.
That’s 12 MSTs a year, which is one per month, which really isn’t so bad.

My only lament is this is another set where I already have all 4 from broadcast. I was very down that one of the few S1 eps I have in entirety is the one included here. I have a few eps from across the years where the cable went out during taping and I didn’t get the whole show that I want to see released, and I also hope to see more that I don’t have…mostly shows from S1-3 as I stupidly didn’t “tape to keep” until they stopped airing those mostly.

I already have these four on VHS, taped from back in the day also (although my copy of Robot vs. Aztec Mummy is horrendous). I simply want the episodes in a better format. As for the episodes, RvAM is a standard season-1 choice (which I will own only to be a completist  ), Girl in Lover’s Lane is one of my favorites, Racket Girls is very funny, and Zombie Nightmare is my alltime favorite episode; the one that I have shown to nonfans and had them rolling out of their seats with laughter.
Fave riff from Racket Girls- Crow (watching somewhat older female gym manager walk across screen): strut, pout, put it out, that’s what you want from Grandmaaa.

#114: I didn’t say it was the low point. That was the other guy. I simply said it was overrated. Still good though. I just think that the riffing improved as time went on and was almost perfect around the time of season five. I have to be in the right mood for season three, but over the years I’ve learned to appreciate it more. I’m in the middle of watching Fugitive Alien II and am enjoying it much more than I remember. Daddy-O is my favorite season three episode.

I find seasons 2-4 the absolute best, then season 5 started to seem a little forced to me, especially after Joel left and I noticed the guys started to laugh at themselves in the theater all the time.

I hated season 6 when it aired, but because of that I have a lot of rediscovering to do. 7 was okay. 8 I thought was absolutely Mike’s best. Then 9 and 10 trickled down, with a few great ones like Werewelf, Rowsdower, and Boggy Creek 2.

    Dammit, I love this show.

I LOVE Racket Girls (though I would get this set to support legitimate releases of the show). While I would like to see some episodes I haven’t already seen (except for Girl in Lover’s Lane, I have these already) the more SF sees a demand for the product, the more inclined they will be to put out more. I’d love to see the Russo-Finnish movies come out, and the Gamera flicks as well. But I think this All-CC Era set is showing that the number of Scifi eps they can get the rights to is dwindling (a LOT of them came from Universal as memory serves, and would NOT be cheap to get rights to…)

    Richard says:

About Season One – I am someone who didn’t start watching the show until 1993 so I missed out on all of Season 1. I have to admit that the episodes that I have not been a huge fan of the previous releases but I am more than happy to see them being released. Even a questionable episode of the show has many jokes that will have me laughing so it’s a push really.

About favorite seasons – If I had to choose, I’d say that my favorite period of the show runs from the end of Season 3 through the Season 6. I know it’s a wide range and there are definitely weak episodes in there, but the whole thing just felt really consistent to me.

About this set – I will be preordering this set as soon as I can. You’ve got three great CC episodes that I have on VHS tapes that are quickly degrading from constant playing and one Season 1 episode that I’ve never seen before. Sounds like a good call to me!

M "His Script Said 'Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha" Sipher says:

I stand by my statements. This is not saying every episode of season 3 is bad (not remotely, NONE of them are bad), just that, taken as a whole, the other seasons were better… and I’m sorry, but “Fugitive Alien” is terminally boring in the same way that most of the Japanese films are. I swear, “pacing” is such a rare concept over there. (About the only Japanese film MST episode I genuinely like is “Prince of Space”, because it actually has steady streams of action. Bad, stupid, goofy action, but it never really lets up.) “Daddy-O” frankly doesn’t do much for me either. It’s not as patently ridiculous as your “Beatniks” or your “Kleffon Wars of Bingham Five”, and there’s not really a “hook” for the episode… the relentless butter jokes (which are a hoot) come a bit too late.

Season 3 has its highlights, to be sure (“Cave Dwellers” starts things off well to be sure), but I don’t much like the feel of the riffing. I PREFER them to genuinely laugh at each others’ jokes, because it takes one out of the feeling that “we have a timed script and we’re sticking to it, dammit” and into the feeling of “here’s three funny guys watching a movie for the first time and making jokes to amuse each other”. Far too often in that era, when they react to each other’s riffs, it feels forced.

And short of the shorts (which are rarely anything but great), honestly, none of the season 3 episodes are in my “must haves”. Add in the over-reliance on Sandy Frank imports and Film Ventures International pap… and I’ll take about any other season over 3 if given the choice.

M "Slow The Plot Down, Laddie, Slow The Plot Down..." Sipher says:

Oh, I’m well aware of the genesis of Fugitive Alien as a wad of “entertainment”… but the pacing is terrible even for strung-together episodes. One would hope that multiple episodes would mean a lot of things happening… but no dice. Even the Master Ninjas and Riding With Death moved quicker and had more going on. I’m sorry to say that this is not a trait unique to Fugitive Alien, but an all-too-common problem with entertainment from the land of the rising sun. Sequences are belabored to breaking point, especially talky ones. The mentality generally seems to be the same that drives soap operas… we have a story, and let’s stretch that mofo as long as possible to fill our huge number of episodes we’ve commissioned, individual episodes be damned. It’s the same principle as padding, only somehow worse. Add to it the general badness of the source material, and, well, there you are.

(Possibly the most egregious example being, of course, Dragon Ball Z. “We have a triple-digit number of episodes to fill now STRETCH this shortish manga series to fill oh crap we can’t stretch enough… you, creator guy! MAKE MORE STORIES NOW so we can stretch them out!” has never been more ridiculous.)

And Professor… are you sure you want to imply that preferring Season 3 requires having something wedged up your butt and your package bunched in tight? I don’t know if that’s the message you really wanna convey here… just saying.

#124: Yeah, it’s amazing how we all have such different takes on our favorite show. I think this fact is part of it’s appeal. It seems to me that the majority of early season fans value the good natured, looser vibe of the show back then and the host segments just as much if not more than the quality of the riffing. For me, it’s always been about the riffing. I love the show from pretty much the end of the fourth season until the end of it’s run. That’s when they had mastered their craft and they were at their best writing-wise. Before that, the riffing had not quite reached it’s peak. I still enjoy the early years (well….season one…I don’t know..)but they don’t make me laugh nearly as hard as the later years.

Oh, Starfighters and the Coleman Tricrapta certainly drag like nobody’s business… but I feel the quality of the riffing, combined with the breezier tone of the time, counterbalances that better than the earlier seasons.

(Season 1, and a chunk of 2, certainly has a far different feel from the others… and there are elements to it I really missed, though I don’t know how well it would have blended. Josh’s sneeze during a Commando Cody bit and the ensuing cover probably sums up that feel best, particularly Joel’s confused “You’re not supposed to do that…”.)

As for ideal box-set-making with what’s left… ooooh… to get a good mix of eras…

    – Robot Holocaust
    – Fire Maidens of Outer Space
    – Last of the Wild Horses (Frank had finally relaxed enough by this point to genuinely act, and it shows in the theater)
    – The Final Sacrifice

I like where this thread is going. I did not actually get MST on cable until the SciFi years (Comedy Central wasn’t available where I lived, if you can believe it!) and while I respect the early years, they just don’t feel as tight as some of the latter seasons. You can really see the whole show coming together watching some of the earlier eps, but they tend to be sort of hit and miss. But they were all learning their craft, which is cool. I do think the folks that have to continually tell us that they’ve been watching since season one or two should realize that us “Johnny come lately” folks are just as big of fans and just as valid as they are. I’ll just try and be nice and think of them as old timer Billy Slater from now on.

#106: You’re right about 12 episodes from October ’08 to July ’09 being a pretty good ratio. I just hadn’t expected the next release to follow XIV so many months later (compared to how soon after 20AE we heard the lineup for XIV and it was released). But since Rhino released 57 episodes on DVD from April 2000- February 2008, and that’s an average of roughly 7 episodes per year, then we are ahead so far.

I guess I got my hopes up that Shout!Factory taking over from Rhino–with their reputation, as I understand it, of being very focused on what the fans would want–would mean more releases more often.

As far as a dream set to come out, disregarding Travis’s availability research, I would choose….
    The Day the Earth Froze
    Robot Holocaust
    Warrior of the Lost World
    Santa Claus
    Final Sacrifice
….because my dream set wouldn’t stop at 4!

    Ukridge and Cabbage Patch Elvis,

Thanks – I finally understand what you guys are saying. I was going to ask how everyone rated the host segments because I think Joel is 95/100 and Mike is 5/100 and Joel’s were many times the best part/ biggest laugh of the show, and Mike has had a LOT of clunkers in his era.

But now I get what you’re saying. Makes sense. I do like the looser, more natural feel of Joel, it really seemed like he was watching the movie and trying to understand what the hell was going on, whereas Mike is too, but ripping it a lot more obviously.

Whew. But I’m still gonna wear my beltbuckle to the SIDE!

    Mike "ex-genius" Kelley says:

The best thing about the show is that with such a wide variety there is something for everyone.

I like Joel and Mike equally, but came to believe that Mike was a *much* better writer. And the Japanese shows were my favorite — actually, come to think of it, almost any movie where it is so ineptly made that it practically ground to a halt makes for the most laughter in our home (on that note, the CT movie where absolutely *nothing* happens for 10 minutes at the end is hysterical). Whether it’s Ed Wood filming a car backing up before it can go forward, or the actors waiting to move before the scene actually starts, or just long repeated shots of mountain climbing, there’s something about a filmmaker padding his film out that just makes the riffing on that priceless. That’s very different from the gentleman here who wants more action in his movies.

So — different strokes, and that’s probably why we’re getting such a mix of episodes for each release (which was the whole point of this thread). I hate season one but hope that as many from that season are released as possible — heck, let’s all pray a miracle happens and they *all* get released, each and every season (in this economy you never know :>)

    Johnny come lately fan (1999).
But no greater fan than I.

Generally, I like the Joel era host segments better than the Mike era host segments, and I always felt Dr. F and Frank were funnier than the SciFi crew (Brain-guy was the only one that really made me laugh.)

Josh’s voice for Dr. Erhardt was HORRIBLE and GRATING, but he was maybe the best riffer in the movie segments during KTMA and season 1.

I have a STRONG preference for the movie segments during Mike’s era. Season 8 is easily my favorite season, with some season 9 movies real close (Puma Man, Werewolf, Final Sacrifice, anyone?).

Season 3 had some really great eps. Pod People is a classic (great example of Joel era host segments-”Idiot Control Now” song, and Frank in that I’M A VIRGIN shirt kills me everytime.) The Amazing Collosal Man, Time of the Apes, Daddy-O.

About this set: Zombie Nightmare is a top ten episode in my book. I really didn’t like Racket Girls at all. I think season 6 was Mike’s worst. Too many Coleman Francis movies and others like Invasion USA. Zombie Nightmare, Danger!! Death Ray, and Angel’s Revenge were my favorites from that season.

But what do I know. I AM a Johhny come lately fan, Right?

    Cabbage Patch Elvis says:

Garth Arizona – I’d buy that. Overall, I do think that the Joel era had better host segments (Idiot Control and the sixties flashback sequence from Catalina Caper are good examples) and they did a lot to endear Joel to me. I also liked the set up of the Invention Exchange format. Watching episodes out of order as I like to do (I don’t think I could go chronologically-how structured!!!) the scifi era was a bit soap opera-like for me. Ancient Rome, the Castle, Planet of the Bobos…you never know what’s coming next. That being said, and why I wish Shout! would set up chapter stops so I could skip to or from host segments, I truly believe that the best riffing was done later on in the series. I think Mike and Kevin are better writers and riffers later on, and the fact that you hear so much more laughter at each other’s jokes is proof of that. It’s one of the touches that really makes the later episodes special to me.

Wish list: Fire Maidens of Outer Space Samson vs. the Vampire Women Girls Town Time of the Apes…I think that sounds right. As far the sci-fi era, especially towards the end,the movies weren’t really bad bad, like the Coleman Francis ones.I didn’t care for Quest of the Delta Knights at all.I do prefer Dr.F and Tv’s Frank, but Pearl,Bobo and Brain Guy had some good moments, too.

    1 adam 12 says:

I would say that Joel was the BETTER host, but I LIKE Mike more. I started watching intermittently around season 2, so the Servo voice I was used to was Kevin’s, who I still think is better than Josh. I am becoming a huge Josh fan on CT though. Erhardt was a deeply irritating character and I’ll never miss him. The SciFi-era host segments were very hit-or-miss, some hilarious, some downright bad. I prefer Mike & the Bots laughing at each other’s jokes; it feels like actual camaraderie.
    4-disc Dream Set:
    Agent for HARM
Deathstalker (and the Warriors From Hell)
    Samson vs. the Vampire Women
    Night of the Blood Beast
All of my favorite episodes that haven’t been released yet (in order too). Although I would love it if Shout! would release “theme” sets, like a Gamera set (probably not gonna happen); a director’s set, like Roger Corman, Ed Wood or Bert I. Gordon; the previously-suggested Russo-Finnish grouping; or a sword-and-sandal batch (perhaps the other Hercules movies with Colossus & the Headhunters and, um, Viking Women & the Sea Serpent?)

    John Seavey says:

I’ve been watching since KTMA. All the seasons are good. There, that’s settled. :)

Seriously, this is a “win” set for me. ‘Zombie Nightmare’ is one of my all-time faves, an absolute must-have, and the other three were all ones I missed due to my dad’s maniacal insistence that we didn’t need cable. :) I’d agree that the Season One episodes are a bit loose and that they were still finding their way (mostly in terms of realizing how fast they could throw out jokes, I think–they tend to go at a slower pace in the early seasons), but they’re interesting as historical artifacts, and I enjoy watching them to see how the show came together.

It’s worth keeping in mind, for those who wonder why they seem to concentrate on a certain era or why they put certain “weak” episodes in a set…well, apart from remembering that your weak episode is someone else’s favorite, it’s worth remembering that MST3K has hurdles that other series don’t. Jim Mallon has already said that he thinks there’ll be about fifty episodes that never get released on DVD, simply because the rights hurdles are too difficult. So if they haven’t released your favorite episode/season/era, it could just be because there’s a patch of episodes in it that rights issues prevent them from getting to.

    It Conquered the World
    Time of The Apes
    The Amazing Colossal Man 1 & 2

I’m drawing a blank on the actual show but the skit where Torgo returns with the drinks from the Pizza delivery from the earlier episode of Manos…

I love almost all of the Comedy Central episodes. the SciFi stuff leaves me wanting.
    Although Final Justice was GREAT

    The Bolem says:

Have only seen its prologue, but I think Torgo’s first return is in Operation Double-Double-O-Seven. That prologue was the first piece of the show I ever knowingly saw though, so it’d mean a lot to me too, but I ain’t holdin’ my breath.

However, what’s this horse-hockey about eps that will NEVER get released on DVD? Being also a Transfan with one foot in the autistic spectrum, I’m too patient for my own good, if anything. With rights issues, time is on our side since they’ll all be public domain eventually, right? So what if we’re dead. Our great-great-grandkids will all be able to enjoy the complete series, unless the Film-Anti-Preservation-Society comes into being.

I have so much of Travis’s list memorized I can’t seperate a wish list from a guess, and I mostly know the CC era from ACEG, so my ideal volume XVI would be:

Robot Monster (first Season 1 I ever saw)
Jungle Goddess (for the beginning of Phantom Creeps)
Santa Claus (assuming it’ll come out end of the year)
Invasion of the Neptune Men (1 of 4 Scifi eps I don’t have taped)

That was Operation Double 007 154, and not we are not likely to get it, which sucks cause it’s a funny episode. I love when Joel comes out in the “Thunderball” outfit and struts around the SOL just like they did in the movie. Classic.
