Weekend Discussion Thread: The Right Time for a Certain Episode

“Wombspaceoxygenator” suggests we discuss:

episodes or seasons you prefer to watch at certain times of the day, or at certain dates with the exception of the obvious ones such as Christmas episodes during Christmas time etc. For instance, I prefer watching the first 6 seasons during the day while the remainder seasons during the night. How about you guys?

When the temperature really dropped this winter, I decided to trick myself into thinking it was summer, so I went with Catalina Caper and Horror of Party Beach.

Sometimes, when I’ve had a bad day, I watch one of the REALLY bad movie episodes. Ones like ‘Monster A Go Go’, ‘Wild World Of Batwoman’, ‘Invasion Of The Neptune Men’ and others. Those to me are the funniest. Watching Joel/Mike/Jonah and the Bots struggle to get through them makes me feel a lot better.

I only watch eps in the evenings, so I don’t have a “time of day” suggestion, but I try to watch “The Final Sacrifice” every Canada Day (July 1st, for those of you not blessed to have poutine running through your veins), preferably with a good brew or two. I do try not to throw my empty cans on the living room floor, though. I mean, we must have some standards, eh?

  6. I’ve watched The Giant Spider Invasion so many times before going to bed I’ve lost count, same goes for Hamlet and Zaat. For some reason I prefer watching the KTMA episodes late in the afternoon. I once ‘listened’ to Space Mutiny while working out (I converted all episodes to mp3). Monster A-Go Go is my favorite early in the morning episode. I never watch/listen to It Lives by Night or Devil Doll at night, for obvious reasons. Laserblast is one of the few I can watch at any time. I don’t know what it is, but 70s movies feel more like night while 80s movies feel more like day.

  7. The 2 Fugitive Alien movies need to be watched together, and they are extremely watchable, so I save them for the one or two days a year I am sick and have to stay home from work. Somehow, the song “He Tried to Kill Me with a Forklift” lifts my spirits on those days.

  8. This sort of echos another weekend topic we had, but because we always watched MST3K when it was first run on Saturday mornings, with our pancake breakfasts, we watch a MST3K every Sunday now with breakfast (and Prosecco, which always makes things funnier).

The first time I saw The Screaming Skull was during a two foot snowfall. So it’s become my N’oreaster episode.

Horror of Party Beach–warm summer night.

The Undead is a great late night episode.

Wild Rebels on a summer day.

    Crash of the Moons –

Goes perfectly with a HOGAN’S HEROES marathon on one of the retro channels. However, loud renditions of “I see NOTHING!” From the living room every time Bavaro shows up do get old after a while.

I have to go with the obvious: Watching “San Francisco International” when flying into San Francisco International. Then I arrive and the airport looks nothing like what I just saw, which is a relief.

I can watch any episode anytime except for Manos, which I only watch on Saturday nights for some reason. Don`t know why that is or what that says about me as a person. Other than that I stick to a Joel/Mike alternate rotation which again, might be weird, might be just me.

    Boggy Creek II –

When else but camping, of course. Watch it on the tablet you stowed in the camper next to the Creature radar. Nothing goes better with bologna sandwiches and beans than watching Crenshaw and company carrying on in The Bottoms.

A mostly honored tradition for quite a few years now: Manos (my favorite MST) in Halloween. Fits the holiday

’50s and ’60s monster movies feel right for a Saturday night (esp. midnight, when there’s no live SNL on that week, and watch an old one an hour early), like old horror movie showings back in the day.

Often on a Friday night, I’ll watch one with a made-for-TV movie or similar type film to mirror those airing then when I was growing up in the ’70s. KTMA ones work well there.

Because I specifically remember them airing at that time, when I watch one on a Sunday, I tend to watch a SciFi Channel one then.

And any movie on the show that was intended for kids (like the Rocky Jones ones or, arguably, Carnival Magic ;) are good ones to watch in the morning, esp. Saturday morning.

I got in the habit a few years ago of watching an episode each night at midnight. I also watch it with headphones on. And which episode I’ll watch just depends on what sort of episode I’m in the mood to watch, light and goofy, serious or somber.

Just out of curiosity “Wombspaceoxygenator” why do you watch the first 6 seasons in the day and the other ones at night?
I always watch episodes late at night around midnight because I’m old enough not to have to get up early anymore and I like a good laugh before I go to sleep.

  24. I first discovered MST3K surfing channels late on a Friday night–And the discovery was not so much of Robot Holocaust (“Now where is that city?”), as of “Oh hey, they changed the channel lineup again AND finally got around to adding The Comedy Channel!”
(The cable-lineup shufflings didn’t usually happen until the weekends, unannounced, and unless we got one of those mailings in the cable bill, we never found out about it until channel-surfing after hours and wondering what the heck we were watching and where our channels had moved to.)

For such reason, new Joel-era MST3K disks MUST be on a late Friday or Saturday night, while digging up random ephemera. Daytime or any other day of the week would seem awkward.

I rarely watch anything on TV at all anymore, but the one constant is that I watch some MST3K before going to bed at night — usually around midnight. A good laugh with my old friends on the SOL always helps me relax and is a great way to end the day. Sometimes if I wake up and have trouble getting back to sleep, I’ll watch it some more.

I don’t have any other pattern as far as watching certain episodes at specific times of year. I do tend the watch the Christmas-related episodes around Christmas, and sometimes will watch a Turkey Day set on Thanksgiving, but that’s about it. And I don’t even reserve those only for the holidays.

The Day The Earth Froze (Sampo) –

When? Just after a winter cold front sweeps in. Around here that generally means low 30s, so not a lot stuff freezing in your nose, but people and school districts still freak out if a snowflake hits the ground. What we need is for Ilmarinen to forge out some common sense for people to use when they are driving.

Anyway, I’ll be unoriginal and say I often listen to Manos as I try to sleep. It’s funny, and I also like listening to it just in leisure, but it’s the one episode I’ve seen it the most, so I’m not constantly perking up because I’m worried I missed a joke or anything. That and the jazz soundtrack is comforting (Yes! A positive!).

MST3K is definitely a nighttime-is-the-right-time activity–if I watch during the day it’s because I’m sick or need some cheering up. (I am retired, but I still try to keep up the pretense of doing something “useful” in the daylight.) I don’t have specific times for specific episodes. What happens is I’ll get into a rut where every night I select from a list of favorites (e.g., “Space Mutiny”, “Cave Dwellers”, “Danger!! Death Ray”, “The Final Sacrifice”, etc., etc.). When that gets old, I strike out for the territories with some eps I haven’t watched lately: “The Beginning of the End”, “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die”, “Monster A Go Go”, for instance. (Why, it was “Racket Girls” that lit up my life recently one fine evening.) Having two episodes on Comet TV every Sunday has affected this routine to some extent. One thing I’ve discovered is that episodes I didn’t like too much when they first aired turn out to be hilarious when I come back to them after a long hiatus: “Starfighters”, for example, and “Deathstalker & the Warriors from Hell”. Generally, every night is MST3K night, and the specific episode depends on my mood. (Curiously, I watch non-Christmas eps at Christmastime, but never watch Christmas eps when it’s not Christmastime. Eh, err, well . . . that’s not really very curious, is it? Never mind . . . )

Why ? I honestly don’t know exactly, I only noticed it a few months ago. But I have a few exceptions, Human Duplicators was ‘promoted’ to night about a month ago. Am I the only one who gets depressed after watching Diabolik ? which is why I only watch it at daytime. Maybe I should keep a tally to see which ones get ‘demoted’; one catalyst is the decade the particular film was made in.

I get depressed watching Diabolik because it’s the last “official” MST3K episode not because of the movie. It’s one of my favorite movies because I grew up in the 60’s and I remember going to see the Sean Connery Bond movies, spy films and other movies like Diabolik. It brings back memories of the “good old days” for me.

because of the dumpy re-enactors in Time Chasers, I find it fitting to watch it on Independence Day

I also try to watch episodes where they were set when travelling. Giant Spider Invasion- Wisconsin, Time Chasers (again) Vermont, Manos-Texas, Swamp Diamonds-Louisiana, Squirm-Georgia etc.

I have a playlist pretty much constantly looping on the computer I use. I have files for my top 50 and 2nd 50 favorite episodes playing on looped/random that I particularly use to help sleep at night. I plug headphones in and cover the screen and drift off to sleep.

Oh, me too. I don’t find the actual movie depressing, that’d be hilarious. Even a comedy show’s last episode can make me feel down in the dumps.

    Oh, wait..

Anyhoo – I’m a big fan of the Herc’s and Cave Dwellers is pretty much always a go-to for me when I’m down with a cold or something (as I was this past week).

Outside of that, I view them as I feel them. Lately I’ve had all of the shorts on a loop.
