For those of you who say 105 – The Corpse Vanishes is a terrible episode, you should really watch more of Season 1. It’s one of the more entertaining entries in that season. It ain’t The Crawling Eye or The Slime People or Moon Zero Two, for crying out loud. Of course, my Season 1 dream episodes would be Robot Monster and Project Moonbase, so here’s hoping they’re next.

Yeah, I know — this isn’t from any of the upcoming DVD release MST3K films, but I just love that quote. Sounds like my love life.

Wow, I’ve read a lot of comments that this is the best set ever released. Having seen ONLY the episodes that have been released on DVD plus about 10 others, I can say that I’ve yet to see ONE EPISODE being released in the new set. I am completely stoked to find out if SANTA CLAUS and NIGHT OF THE BLOOD BEAST are worth all the hype.

Sounds like a great set! Looking forward to it!

Not having seen most/any of the episodes in Vol XVI, I am excited to see so many raves about the upcoming set.

I’m not a Season 1 fan at all (I guess because I didn’t have cable until 1994 and caught onto the show during the Season 3-4-5 run on Comedy Central), but as a completist it’s nice to have the early shows.

Of course I would have preferred to have had some personal faves in the new set (Jack Frost, Daddy-O, Girls Town, Agent From H.A.R.M., The Leech Woman, etc.), but since I got my most-desired episode in XV (Racket Girls), I have no complaint coming on XVI. Since everyone else is so stoked about the upcoming set, I’m looking forward to seeing what all the excitement is about.

And I can’t wait for my Servo figurine.

I just don’t get how someone can be big enough fan of a show to be posting on fan websites for it 10 years after it goes of the air and still think half the run if said show isn’t worth owning… not an accusation, I just truly can’t wrap my head around it.

For me if it’s MST3k, I’m buying it. End of line.

That being said… looks like a good set.. Santa is great fun, particularly coming out in the holidays and my Crow fig gets a buddy!

“They’d only be sticking it to them if their former employers were still in that line of business.”

As far as I can tell, Rhino hasn’t stopped being a niche TV/Film/Music company. They’ve been a wholly owned subsidiary of time warner since the late 80’s, and the only difference thus far (aside from losing many large contracts) has been the “Handmade” label for higher end stuff, and that’s been around since 99’/00′. So I respectfully disagree. Rhino is still very much in that business.

That having been said, I doubt Shout is really taking any sort of churlish glee from the situation. But I sure am.

I’m happy. I like Warrior and Blood Beast, and I’ve never seen The Corpse Vanishes, so that’ll be fun to have one I haven’t seen yet. The only blemish is Santa Claus, which I can’t stand, but since it’s coming out in December and SCCM has already been released, I guess it makes sense to include that one on there, and it WILL be interesting to see the extras about it.

And — yea! — A Servo figurine to go with my Crow.

All in all, I’m fine with the set. I like to think that this fan page gives us a chance to say what we feel. I like to think that what we say means something, too. It’s easy to see how fast the comments come flying in when SHOUT! releases a new set list. I’m fine with what’s been chosen, but I know there are some episodes that I’d really like to get that haven’t been released, and I think that’s valid posting material. It really irritates me when I read posts on here saying we should “just be happy” with whatever has been selected. If the people who post that kind of stuff are really happy with whatever they’re given as long as it says MST3K, then good for them. I think I’ll voice what I’d like Shout Factory to try and work on next (Puma Man, Rowsdower, Squirm, Johnny Longbone).

  16. Mitchell Rowsdower Beardsley says:

Okay, I know I don’t have to defend myself because no one really cares, but since it’s been mentioned that I’m one of the few that isn’t ‘just happy to have any eps’. I like Joel. I love when they hit their stride with Kevin Murphy as Servo, intro of TV’s wisecracking Frank, the good set, etc starting with episode 201 Rocketship X-M.

The true magic ended for me when Joel left right as I started to anally-retentively tape everything on SP VHS tapes. I didn’t really dig seasons 5.5 thru 6 much, except for a few like Outlaw which I’m currently watching, Village of the Giants, and Girls’ Town.
I always thought the Joel eps were 95% ‘on’ with the skits, and the Mike’s were 90% ‘not so good’. Stuff got better in the shortened season 7.

    Season 8 I love.

9&10 have their Rowsdower and Boggy Creek brilliant moments.

    That’s all.

I love 201-512, and 801-821 the most. Looking at that, and what’s been on DVD, you’ll see why I have my opinion. LOTS of season 6, almost no season 3 or 8, etc.

No biggee, I have them all on tape, and am apparently the last human to still run a VCR, so I can watch whatever whenever. But the last few sets have had like 1 out of 4 from the era I prefer.

I have seen some season 1s and they’re interesting, but not very rewatchable. And like I said I taped Santa when it came out and haven’t ever wanted to see it above other episodes for some reason. (fun fact: I also don’t like Santa Conquers the Martians – sacrilege, I know.)

They ain’t all the same quality. Everyone has their favorites, most of you guys seem to like Mike better. But every episode is not the same in the ‘funny’.

I’ll push the button since not ‘loving’ every set is taboo.

    Joel: ” I’m already alone, aren’t I?”

p.s. Bring me Crash of The Moons and I’ll shut up next time! sheesh.

Hey Mitchell, I’m fine with your explanation. This is all subjective, so who cares?

Although, you saying that most people here prefer Mike is a strange statement. I often think that I am in the small minority here for liking Mike more than Joel (from what Joel episodes I have seen).

Concerning this set, I became a big fan during the Sci-Fi years, so this set is another one like XV where I haven’t seen any of the episodes. And if Santa Claus and NOTBB is half as good as MOST people say they are, I’m in for a fun time this December. Plus we get a Tom Servo figurine (which is what most of us have wanted)!

  26. Disco 3:16 says:

All in all, very awesome set. I know not everyone will be happy until every episode comes out, but this is doing quite well for four episodes.

So many of my favorites were season 8, and so many of them are Universal or Susan Hart, but I’d appreciate it if Horror at Public, er, Party Beach came out soon.

Maybe some more of the great TV series-turned-movies could be checked into.

Looking at post 120, I can see why a season 3 fan could have a bit of a greavance. Hey, maybe if whoever ended up with Gamera’s copyrights could be talked into it, they could do an all-Gamera 5-disc set! Talk about your one-stop shopping.

Of course that’s just my opinion; I could be wrong.

  27. M "That's What You Get For Being A Sideshow Passaround" Sipher says:

Once again… thank you, people sticking up for season 1. That season has a charm that I just can’t get enough of, and I really do hope we can get the whole run… especially Untamed Youth, Robot Holocaust and of course Robot Monster. I’ll happily take The Corpse Vanishes, I’m greatly looking forward to another Lugosi episode to add the the collection. I like the man, terrible film choices regardless.

Santa Claus. Yes. Very yes. Warrior of the Lost World… good gravy, yes, for my money, one of the strongest Joel episodes. (I tend to like season 5 on the whole a lot anyway, and definitely want more… Painted Hills and Double 007 please.) Blood Beast is for me the least great of the season 7 episodes, but the inclusion of the great Turkey Day bumpers and host segments seriously boosts the value there.

    Bravo, Shout! Factory. Bravo.

    My two cents:
While certainly not a complaint; the second set in a row without any SyFy is a bit of a bummer. We didn’t have SyFy when MST was on, so those are a treasure trove of unknown quantities for me (except for a few a friend downloaded off of Dig. Arch. Pro.). So that’s a little less M.J. Pehl, whom I’m really digging as a riffer on CT. Quick aside: Cinematic Titanic…PLEASE RELEASE MORE SOON!! WE MISS YOU!!

As for XVII my dream set:
    Crawling Eye
    The Day the Earth Froze
    Jack Frost
    Diabolik

Alright I love “Santa Claus” and “Warrior” , I like season 1 episodes because they give me a sense of history, and is nice to see Josh getting some love, though I liked Frank better as a sidekick to Dr. F. I didn’t like season 7’s host segments much at all, but I can fast-forward through them. I haven’t seen the Turkey Day segments though, and I thought the riffing in 7 was top-notch. So overall this is a winner for me.

  35. Droppo says:

I know that everyone is entitled to their opinion….and, in all fairness, it appears that the vast majority of posters here are thrilled that Santa Claus is being released….but, I am SHOCKED that anyone could dislike the episode.

Honestly, if you like MST3K…chances are you and I have a vaguely similar sense of humor. And Santa Claus, to me, is one of the funniest episodes they ever did and easily my favorite Mike episode.

I tend to look at these sets this way: there will likely be 1-2 that I won’t like, 1 that I’ll like and I hope that there will be one that I’ll love.

This set has 2 that I love and consider all-time top 10 classics (Santa Claus and Warrior), 1 that I like (Bloodbeast) and 1 that I have no interest in (Corpse…but, only because I don’t enjoy Season 1). So, I’m thrilled.

My taste as a MSTie is pretty simple:

I love both Joel and Mike, but, prefer Joel.

Seasons 3 and 5 are my favorites. I also love Season 2 (particularly Lost Continent, Ring of Terror and King Dinosaur…they have a loopy charm to them and the pacing is very loose) and Season 4.

Season 6 would be next on my list.

My least favorite, by a mile, is Season 1 b/c it doesn’t feel like MST3K to me.

Seasons 7-10 are complicated b/c of the Pearl factor. As anyone who’s read my posts know…I adore Frank and despise Pearl (not necessarily Mary Jo…she was one of a select group of writers and creators for my favorite show of all time and I will always give her props for that…I just LOATHE her performance, the Pearl character and how much screen time she got). That clouds everything for me.

While I like Bill and actually think he did an incredible job taking over for such a beloved performer, Trace will always be the definitive Crow for me. So, I guess I’d go: Season 7, 10, 8, 9.

In sum (although no one asked for this information):

    Seasons:
    3: A+
    5: A+
    4: A
    2: A
    6: B+
    7: B-
    10: C+
    8: C
    9: C-
    1: F

Now, keep in mind, these grades are relative strictly within the world of MST3K.

I still place MST3K far above any other show EVER.

But, these have been Droppo’s two cents.

Seriously, I love all that bonus features, mainly the ones around “Santa Claus”. I mean, this is a good list of episodes to feature, and I’ll get to see one of my favorite shorts (“Put a wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which one piles up.”).

I’ve never seen ANY of these episodes! I lived in a very rural area and we got cable, like, ten years after everyone else did so I saw the occasional CC episode at someone else’s house and then all the SCI-FI episodes. Getting these sets is like the show still being on the air for me.

And “Santa Claus”? Just in time for Christmas? Hopefully next year they’ll put “Jack Frost” out for Christmas and there will be much rejoicing.

    @126 ,

Early Gamera films are in the public domain, but the Sandy Frank versions are not. Sadly, those are the versions used in MST, so those rights are the ones to acquire – something the humorless Mr. Frank has sworn to never allow.

  43. Cronkite Moonshot says:

This sounds REALLY great. My one and only concern would be if they only include the Turkey Day host segments on Blood Beast as a separate bonus feature rather than making it possible to watch the entire episode with them in their proper place. It wouldn’t be at all difficult to do this with seamless branching, so there is really no reason they couldn’t make it viewable in either version. I wouldn’t like the idea of those host segments being treated simply as a curiosity and lumped together out of context in the extras, especially because I actually prefer that version of the episode over the non-TD one. This is exactly the reason seamless branching was designed into the DVD format. So please, oh awesome folk at Shout Factory, do us one last little solid in this already solid laden package, and work that (quite common) DVD magic known as “seamless branching” to make this already amazing sounding release be absolutely perfect.

Whoops again. Yes, 1 episode from season 7 released so far, making it 69 episodes total and 1 more Mike out there than Joel. Still, pretty even.

Blood Beast is also my least favorite season 7 episode, but I really think they’re all incredible. Give us Escape 2000! (We have Toblerone Laugh!)

I am genuinely happy for fans who haven’t yet seen Santa Claus. Again, everyone is entitled to their own opinion….but, if you like MST3K, I think you will LOVE this episode.

It has everything that makes an episode an A+.

    Spoilers:
The movie is as absurd a premise as has ever been filmed. Santa Claus battling Satan (or one of his minions, to be precise) with the help of both Merlin the Wizard (his apparent roommate in their castle located in outerspace) and hoardes of child laborers.

You can’t make this stuff up.

The riffing is as good as any episode ever…and it’s a holiday episode where Mike and the Bots get to bond and sing a few hilarious songs.

The first episode of MST3K I ever saw was Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. I thought that was the pinnacle. And even as someone who prefers (albeit slightly) Joel…I can say that Santa Claus is my favorite of the two.

Also…Warrior of the Lost World is just ridiculously funny. One of the best Joel eps ever. In fact, I’d argue that the first 15 minutes of the movie are up there with the funniest stretches of any MST3K episode ever.

    “Any fruit to declare?!?!?”
