Updated: How Was the Show?

This is an open thread for comments on last night’s RiffTrax Live show.

My thoughts:
• Despite the fact that I have seen a DVD version of this riff, and also saw it live in San Diego last summer, I still went away with a bad case of “laugh stomach.” Another great show. There were definitely some new lines and that was fun: Sorry, Fort Worth!
• The short was lots of fun. It really got everybody warmed up. “Thank you for keeping the plane snake-free.”
• I really liked the thing where they showed the riffers at the side of the screen. I wished they’d done it more.
• For the record, my theater was about 80 percent full, and people were laughing a LOT.
• There were four really brief signal dropouts, all only a few seconds long, in the first half hour or so. Each time I thought “Oh, God, another technical disaster!” But it was fine.
• This was my first exposure to Mr. Coulton and I really enjoyed it. I will seek more of his stuff.
• Every time they showed the two girls in the front row who were singing along with Coulton, people in my theater laughed and, I fear, not WITH the young ladies.
• Lowtax’s stuff didn’t strike me as hold-my-sides hilarious, but I laughed some. I think it’s an acquired taste. I may be too old a fogie.
• This was also my first exposure to Ms. Belmont. I don’t want to come off like a cranky old grandpa here, but quite frankly, for somebody being billed as “the queen of the internet,” I had never heard of her, Revision3, Tekzilla, Qore or the PlayStation Network before she was announced as the host of the Comic-Con show. I’m not a gamer, and she looks young enough to be my daughter so, sorry Veronica, you’ve just never been on my radar screen. You kids get off my lawn! Actually, she seems pleasant enough, and she discharged her duties cheerfully, but she was also a little out of place. To her credit, she seemed to be aware of it. I could almost hear her thinking, “What the hell am I doing here?” Maybe somebody with actual comedy experience (Bridget perhaps?) might have been a better fit, but she was fine.
• I would say that about a tenth of the total laughs the show got were people simply laughing at the movie itself. I’ve seen this movie a dozen times now, at least, and its rank incompetence still stuns me every time.
• It was interesting to see that, in the bedroom scene, they left in the photo of the two contest winners. A couple of years ago they ran a contest, I forget the details, but the prize was that Legend would put your photo in that picture frame. And it was still there.
• Speaking of the color print, it is very nice, not garish at all. Those Legend wizards do a good job.
• Seeing this again made me wonder what the REAL reason was that they never did this movie during the MST3K years. The more I think about it, the more I think the excuses they gave at the time don’t really hold up.
• Fave riff: Why are we beating them off?

Erhardt adds:
• I saw the show in one of AMC’s hoity-toity Fork & Screen theaters. The auditorium was completely sold out. I honestly thought I’d be about the only one there and I was quite pleasantly surprised. I think there was one other auditorium at the AMC Studio 29 also screening the show, but I have no idea what its attendance was.
• Several people in our comments section have posted that they and/or the audience didn’t particularly care for John Coulton. I thoroughly enjoyed his performances…especially when Kevin guest-starred as “the zombie.” Unfortunately in my theater, very few people sung the “eat your brains” line that Mr. Coulton exhorted us to.
• The first Lowtax “sponsor” ad got a HUGE laugh from the Kansas City crowd I was sitting with, as did the quick mention in the “Plans 1-8” song. I’ve always noticed that the residents here love it anytime their city is mentioned, whether that mention is particularly complimentary or not. I can only imagine that the reactions from the Fort Worth audiences were similar. But where the heck was OUR apology, Bill?
• I’ve got to agree with Sampo about Ms. Belmont. Her appearance, along with Coulton’s, just seemed to be an attempt by RiffTrax to heighten their “geek” cred. As if they need to. But she did a good enough job.
• The RiffTrax site actually crashed after the show as audience members rushed to get their free downloads. But they were able to make a few database fixes and got the site back up after a few hours.
• Favorite riff: Can Kevin’s “ptoo!” noise whenever a character waved a gun be considered a riff? If not, I’ll go with “The captain thanks you for keeping our plane snake free.”

I was also at the Lloyd Center showing in Portland. Regarding the audience participation, I honestly couldn’t tell if it was in-theater singing or the surround sound kicking in with the Nashville audio.

One of my favorite sequences was the “It’s a clown mausoleum!” bit. First he says it and people laugh. Then all the people start piling out of the shack and people laugh harder just at that. Then they hit us all of a sudden with “NORM!” and the place erupts.

I was at the Hamilton, NJ showing and had a great time. The crowd was definitely into it, but if they do it again I hope they put all the extra acts at the beginning and don’t tease us with some riffing first.

Oh and thanks for the link! (the fifth one)

Rifftrax Live – Plan 9, Century 9 San Francisco Centre

    • The theater here was 80-90% full, skewing younger (20-30’s) than the Cinematic Titanic shows I attended in February (40’s oldsters like me). Cheaper ticket price and infamy of the film probably helped. This was certainly better cross-promoted than the CT tours have been, no?
    • Sampo’s best riff: “Why are we beating them off?” I thought the next line should’ve been, “So that’s why they keep coming back!”
    • I assumed the “Film Facts” before the show were provided by RT as they used their font and seemed like parodies of those inane factoids. “Movie Mistakes: Keanu Reeves was cast as the lead in The Day The Earth Stood Still.” (Thanks, Bob Executive #127 for the quote)
    • The hostess was cute but lame, and I liked the two Lowtax ads, but when Jonathan Coulton performed I had the strong urge to yell, “You’re not funny!” and “Get off the stage!” (which are valid MST3K callbacks) but I didn’t want to be THAT guy in the crowd. At least here in SF, the girls singing along got more laughs than “JoCo” did. Were they plants or does this guy really have fans? At least some of you enjoyed him…
    • As I observed in the Cinematic Titanic live shows I attended, it’s funny how different areas of the audience react to riffs. The laughter kind of moves around the room in pockets. It was very cool to hear the live Nashville audience cheer heartily to things we in SF did not (the Hee-Haw riff in particular). “The right people will get it” is a more complex theorem than I previously thought.
    • Plan 9 From Outer Space IS a worse film than Manos, from a technical point of view (at least Manos coheres as a single, dismal, blurry vision), but Plan 9 is a hell of a lot more fun. My memory is a blank now but where have I heard that “Your stupid, stupid minds!” sample, long before I ever saw this film?
    • As for the CT v. RT debate, this was almost as funny as the live CT’s I’ve seen (being time-delayed on the West Coast might have affected the gestalt somewhat). But none of the CT DVDs are as fun as the live gigs were. I think CT could benefit from one of these Fathom live events, but Plan 9 is a well known classic and both groups would find it hard to sell out theaters with lesser known films. An interesting business model to debate in the future…
    • To Manny Sanguillen #137: IMHO, DivX rules. My DAP MST’s are playable on my all-region DVD player, as are most of my downloaded “avi” Rifftrax files. The player is free, but the converter you pay for (I have had to use it a few times, and it integrates well with Quicktime Pro so it’s worth it).

By the way, I liked the Jonathan Coulton songs. I’m not positive that I’ve heard him before but, you know, who else does songs about zombie coworkers or (looking through his catalogue) the Mandelbrot Set or Kenesaw Mountain Landis? Other than They Might Be Giants?

Wow. On second thought maybe it was to expand JoCo’s cred with MSTies. I think this is the only large gathering of people on the internet I’ve ever seen who haven’t heard of Jonathan Coulton.

I was in the Alderwood 7 theater in Lynnwood, out here in Western Washington! The Theater was about 3/4’s full, I think? I’m bad at estimating things.

We drove an hour and a half, missed our off ramp, got lost, and drive another half hour to get there!

Our theater had a tepid reaction of JoCo as well – which saddened me, because I’m a huge fan. Perhaps playing the songs with just the guitar, and somewhat softer than he does on the mp3 versions, leached some of the energy from them? Or perhaps all demographics just don’t have to overlap 100%. Well, no matter! I’m still hoping to see him at PAX, and sing the RE: Your Brains chorus at the top of my lungs with an entire audience of enthusiastic fans.

I enjoyed the show to the fullest! Our theaters’ glitches happened during the short. They were only momentary lapses, and you could feel the tension escalate through the entire theater – but they leveled off and hey! That’s part of what makes a live show live! It’s just not the same otherwise.

Neither my friend or I had actually seen Plan 9 before, so it was all new to us. I actually hallucinated that I understood the deeper meaning of the film, knowledge of which magically transformed it into a decent movie, about halfway through, but I’ve had such delusions before and have learned to pay them no mind.

I had a great time, and even though my poor timekeeping meant I missed dinner, and we got stuck in three separate freeway construction sites on the way back, and I had to work the next day – it was easily, totally worth it. I’m seconding the ‘Bob Executive’ riff for my favorite. I dunno why, but it struck a chord with me! Do it again soon, guys! I’ll be waiting!

Yes, that’s why Plan 9 is a great film. In the future, Ed Wood will be better remembered than Tim Burton.

Excellent show, saw it at the Cinemark Movies 16 in Lubbock, Texas. The theater was about 90% full and everyone had a wonderful time it seemed. There was lots of laughter at the movie’s expense but definitely more of it went to the Wonderful Trio of Mike, Kevin and Bill.

I came away from the short with one thought. “Wow, who would have thought planes used to be trains with wings that served, apparently edible food. Shocking!” Yes, I certainly hope this will not be the last Rifftrax Live show.

  13. To some here who find it hard to believe we hadn’t heart of Coulton before this — remember, kids, that the *average* MST3K person is a lot older than you are.

Just do the math — it started (basically) on the Comedy Channel in ’89. Most of us were at least in our 20’s then, so the majority of really hard-core MST3K followers are in their 40’s or older (I’m closer to 60).

The riffing reflects this — Mike and Co are also that age, and their references are generally from eras long before you 20 somethings were born. I realize that in this media savvy and Nick-At-Night age almost no pop culture is beyond knowledge, but there’s a huge difference between knowing it secondhand and living through it.

While at the time I thought Coulton was so-so I’ve since had the Zombie song floating in my head and I did some net searches and will probably get a CD or two. Not all his stuff is gold — there’s a lot of fluff in there — but he does have some interesting songs and ideas and he’s worth a listen to those of you who, like me, hadn’t been aware of him.

As for the girl — she was about the worst MC I’ve ever seen for any event. She has a big following? For what, exactly? It ain’t for performing in any manner, because they could have picked almost anyone out of the audience to do a better job. Does that mean we are reaching a point in our society where fame is more important than talent? (Oh, sorry, that happened before I was born :>).

Finally, someone here posted it was so great for Mary Jo to show up to support her “competitors”. Well, it was nice of her to show up, but you obviously have no clue about show business. People in the business (at least the majority of them) don’t think of themselves as “competitors”. It’s not like they are making widgets and if you buy someone else’s you won’t buy theirs. People who make movies LOVE the fact that other movies do well, because it’s good for everyone. No one loses when folks go out and have a good time (because what happens then is that folks want to spend MORE money having a good time doing similar things). Trust me, performers do not root against each other — that’s why there isn’t any business like show business.

Mike “ex-genius” Kelley- I’ll gladly admit that I know nothing about show business, but I think there is evidence that the MST alums have not always been supportive of each other’s works. I seem to recall Jim Mallon forcing the Film Crew off of the Rhino label because he did not want them competing with MST releases. I also remember that the prospect for new Film Crew releases on Shout evaporated about the same time MST was signed. Also, I remember CT’s early press working to differentiate themselves from Rifftrax. “The original cast of MST,” Joel’s stressing of the visual interaction of the cast with the movie in interviews, etc. I also remember Joel not wanting to do a Rifftrax with Mike yet because he was trying to build his own brand.

I’m not saying Joel is a bad guy (though Jim might have crossed a line). I love CT and think they are being smart. In his position, I’d do the same thing. But they are in competition with each other. And they have not been supportive of each other. That’s why I thought it was cool that Mary Jo did turn out for the Plan 9 event.

Jim didn’t. Neither did Joel, Trace, Frank, nor J. Elvis. Again, I’m not saying that they had to or even should have, but I was impressed that Mary Jo did.

One thing I’d like to add: this was my first time watching Plan 9 all the way through. I had always assumed that it was considered the “worst movie ever” just for terrible set pieces and the pie plate UFOs. But there are also loooong scenes where NOTHING FREAKING HAPPENS. Consider me educated.

Considering he makes a living from fan donations (giving away almost all his songs for free) and touring the country to sold-out shows…yeah, I’d say he has fans.

I feel weird having to defend Coulton on the internet. Considering he’s, you know, already the King of the internet.

  17. Cliff,

Jim Mallon ain’t a performer, Gypsy aside. Performers don’t compete with each other in terms of not wanting the other to succeed.

But, truly, Joel not wanting to riff with Mike has NOTHING to do with him “rooting against him” or being in competition. He just wants to do his own thing. I can promise you none of the CT folk wish nothing but the best for Mike and Co. and vice versa.

(And not supporting someone actively doesn’t mean a thing — like everyone else, they all have their own lives to lead. Trust me, I was in the business for years and we all wished each other the best because it’s best for everyone).

If they ever do this again, NO JOHN COULTON. Music is too personal and I don’t care for “bearded college guitarists.” His lyrics were unoriginal, competently played, I’ll give him that, but I simply cannot express how many groans I heard from the audience during the 5 minute zombie song. Everything else was great, except my theater (Philadelphia Regal, I assume it was their fault) screwed up the sound and we only got silence through the first half of the short. Then when it came back it was a little off sync for the WHOLE MOVIE! I didn’t really care, but it was disappointing.

“Well, Vietnam’s not going to bomb itself…”

“This is my impression of you!”

Saw it with my wife at the Cinemark 17 in Springfield, OR. I was also fully expecting us to be the only people there and was happily surprised to find that the theater was 80% full. The short was a riot (“‘My marriage is basically over!’ says the captain!”) and it’s nice to have it to watch again. The commercials and the songs were fine and the applause for them seemed to be polite in the theater, but people were definitely biding their time for the main event. As for the film…I’ve heard people talk about how great it was to watch MST3K with a big crowd, but that never really sunk in until the show; I can’t remember the last time I’ve laughed that hard. It’s also nice to have tangible evidence that I’m not the only MSTie in the world (The “TIME FOR GO TO BED!” line got a big cheer.)

From what I’ve read, this seemed to be a pretty big hit overall and I’m hoping they’ll have another show (“Planet of the Dinosaurs”, perhaps?) Maybe they’ll squeeze in another short instead of the other stuff.

(Oh, and the woman MC seemed like she was given some index cards just before and had to wing it. Nice to look at, though.

That worked just fine. I wish I knew about changing the .Divx extension to .AVI earlier, but better late than never.

It burned just fine using DVDFLICK too.

I don’t see any reason for Divx to go on existing if it’s that easy to work around it.

I do feel like I just forged a check in the name of Fred Willard to pay for an extension to my mansion, but if it’s good enough for Guy Caballiero, it’s good enough for me.
I just gotta watch out for Crazy Legs…(and that stupid nosy Earl Camenbert).

    I doubt it.
If it did, I never saw it listed.

One time Mike Nelson came to the Fox Chapel Waterworks cinema and hosted a showing of the movie “Bait”.

Afterwards he spoke for a half hour and effectively critiqued the movie to shreds with great humor. After, he signed his first book at the time, Movie Mega Cheese. I got my copy still.

He signed “Sorry about ‘Bait’, Michael J.Nelson”.

I brought with me my check for $1.98 that I won from TimmyBigHands, because I wanted to ask him if this was his signature, which I thought it was, and he affirmed it. The guy next in line looked at us quizzically while we passed the check back & forth and Mike joked “Sorry, I owed him some money, thats all thats going on here”.

A cool experience I’ll always remember. (Unless I get an awful head injury and turn into a mindless drooling vegetable or something).
(Some people who know me probably think that already happened).

By the way, I still have the check, uncashed.

I saw it in Plano, Texas (just north of Dallas). The theater was 80-90% full; that was a pleasant surprise. There were a few pauses due to technical issues, but overall, nothing to complain about.

The opening “Did you know …” slides were hilarious. I think only a few people got the joke; the woman behind us did not.

The Fort Worth jokes got big laughs here. I guess the DFW rivalry still lives on. The joke about the 100 degree heat and the Hook ’em Horns shot glasses was really funny to us … thanks, Bill!

I enjoyed the whole evening, even the songs and filler bits. Most of the people sang along. Even my wife, who is not a big fan of MST3K, liked it. It helped that we watched teh Tim Burton “Ed Wood” film all week before the show, so she could really appreciate the show. Ed Wood’s films are not really that bad, but the Rifftrax riffing made it so enjoyable to sit through.

Hope they do this again and soon. I would love to see them live; I have already seen CT twice live, and it would be cool to compare the two experiences.

  31. Thanks for all the nice reviews everyone. I think it’s safe to say the event was a huge success, which will hopefully translate to many more.

@ Manny: You’re not “working around” anything. DivX is not DRM (necessarily, although they have the tools to make it so) – it’s a “video codec” meaning how the video information is encoded into a playable file format.

Also, we have mpeg-2 versions of all of our VOD and shorts content, so you don’t even have to download the DivX version if you don’t want to.

  32. Saw it at the Regal in Lexington, KY also… was quite surprised by the turnout. My little brother, surprisingly, went with me… I didn’t even know he knew what Rifftrax was, but he was all for it when I mentioned what I was doing that night.

Honestly, aesthetically I’d have preferred the original black and white version, but that’s just nitpicking. The crowd, as somebody has mentioned, was about 1/2 full, which was far more than I was expecting. I hope if they do this again they limit how many theatres in a city can show it, because I think if I’d been watching the show by myself on my laptop it wouldn’t have been nearly as funny. Being *in* a theatre with other fans really drew some power and helped with the comedy.

I admit to napping some towards the end… I recently quit my job in Boston and was in town moving my junk to my parents’ house to be a loser for a few months, so my sleep schedule is a bit bleeped up… but even closing my eyes and beginning to snooze, I’d jolt out of it laughing at a riff. Too good.

I hope they do this more often.

It’s funny the way some movies are so bad, they’re good, while others are so bad, they’re just bad.

I’ve never been able to put my finger on what it is about a bad movie that makes it good while others are just unwatchable, but it might make for a good thread, Sampo. :)

Anyone tempted to dismiss Coulton based on two songs should check out some of his other work. He has quite a bit of range and they aren’t all novelty songs.

That hits the nail on the head. In none of my previous comments did I imply he was bad either, just that he didn’t belong in the show.

Or at least he didn’t belong in the show after Mike, Kevin and Bill were already on stage. Once the riffing started, an unrelated act like Coulton’s just slammed the brakes on the comedy and the audience enthusiasm for the main act. Once Rifftrax started with the short, they should have kept going with their own act. Having another act interrupt did nothing good for the show.

I have to agree that Ms. Belmont, while a charming young lady, was fish out of water.
My venue was sold out, which surprised me because there was no advertising outside of the community. We all laughed at the movie and the two girls who sang with the singers.

This would be an excellent DVD to sell. The whole event was fun and the video (west coast delay) was well produced. I’d buy it.

It makes sense to me that Mary Jo would go to see the live show. She is the only person from CT to perform in a Rifftrax. Any one remember Glitter?

Sorry for this double post…..I needed to add quotes….

“Mike “ex-genius” Kelley- I’ll gladly admit that I know nothing about show business, but I think there is evidence that the MST alums have not always been supportive of each other’s works. I seem to recall Jim Mallon forcing the Film Crew off of the Rhino label because he did not want them competing with MST releases. I also remember that the prospect for new Film Crew releases on Shout evaporated about the same time MST was signed. Since nobody from Boise has chimed in here, I guess I better do it. Our theater was about half full with no signs at the theater at all saying it was going to happen, I wouldn’t have heard of this event at all except that I heard Mike Nelson being interviewed on a morning radio talk show as I got up that day. I agree with others saying that Coulton should not have been a part of this, it totally killed the momentum at my theater and it sounds like many others. The short and Plan 9 were great, but I can’t rank it as high as Cinematic Titanic which I saw live in Seattle this year, there was a better audience and actual live-ness can’t be beat, especially with the meet and greet afterward.

Time for me to eat some crow…
In post #153 I was pretty dismissive of Jonathan Coulton’s performance and though I didn’t dig that, I have now heard him with Paul & Storm on the very funny Rifftrax Presents version of TRON. Skenderberg @ War of the Colossal Fan Guide gives it 4 stars, and I agree. Being unfamiliar with these performers, I don’t know who’s saying what, but it’s all good, and is one of the better riffs I’ve heard by non-MST3K veterans.

I don’t like you guys. You got to see the show and I didn’t! (because it sold out). Though I did hear in the posts that they added a theatre in NYC.
    I wish I had known that…

Bot Snak, my friend, you are 100% right. Apparently the West Valley drools, so I’m packing up and heading out to friendlier MSTie territory in the East Valley. Can I crash on your couch til the next Rifftrax screening?

Not to sound uncool, but I ordered 2 copies of JoCo’s “Best of” CD the next day (one for my my Zombie obsessed brother) and just listened to it this morning. More hits than misses in my opinion. So mission accomplished, I guess. I still don’t think he should be part of any future Rifftrax events though.

Oh and for the curious the few people who did show up to our screening were definitely 20’s-30’s. Actually the group behind me were undeniably college kids and on the way out one of the girlfriends said, “Well, that was a waste of 2 hours”. I guess she went home and listened to her Dane Cook albums to cheer herself up.

There were “sound problems” at the showing in Hampton, VA :( We waited over an hour, but finally had to leave- I hear the show eventually started sometime after 9pm. Wish we could have seen it :(

I was at the Nashville source show and the show was great. For all those Lowtax bashers I would like to say that he was the one that brought stolen water from the backstage craft service table out to the folks in line. He even snuck a few things in backstage before the show to be signed by the crew. That was unnecessary as everyone came out after the show and was as gracious as always signing autographs, taking pictures etc… Bridget was there (I thought I was taking some crazy TMZ kind of pictures as Mike was getting really cozy with a lady…and it was Bridget so my blackmail scenario I played out in my head was destroyed) so she would have been able to host it, but Rifftrax continues to link itself with ‘internet celebs’ to increase exposure and gain net cred. I think I know who the infamous singing girls were (we were talking to them in line for quite a while) and they are true MST3IES to be sure, not some ‘we came to see Jonathan Coulton’ people.
