Weekend Discussion Thread: Ideas for Future Shout Factory Sets

Alert reader David Finn writes:

Last weekends topic of the Russo-Finnish films generated a universally loved idea for a DVD box set of the 4 films. This got me thinking about other ideal groupings of MST episodes. Granted this is mere wishful thinking as neither Shout nor Rhino have used common themes to organize previous sets. But we can fantasize…
A few to start us off… juvenile delinquents, hypnotism, made-for-TV, Corman, Lippert, kaiju…

All good ideas! Let hear some more!

You mean besides the Russo-Finnish set? (The more I think about that the more I like it)

How about a TV series Box Set:
    Master Ninja I
    Master Ninja II
    Riding With Death
    Cosmic Princess

    Or a Sandy Frank set:
    Fugitive Alien I
    Fugitive Alien II
    Time of the Apes
    Mighty Jack

The latter might be difficult given Sandy Frank’s reputed antipathy toward the Brains. So I guess “YOU’RE STUCK HERE!”

How about an “MSTV” set, with any four of the films produced for TV, or made from TV episodes?

    Stranded in Space (305)
    Time of the Apes (306)
    Fugitive Alien (310)
    Mighty Jack (314)
Star Force: Fugitive Alien II (318)
    Master Ninja I (322)
    Master Ninja II (324)
Crash of the Moons (with General Hospital!) (417)
Attack of the the Eye Creatures (418)
    Code Name: Diamond Head (608)
    San Francisco International (614)
    Riding with Death (814)
    Agent for H.A.R.M. (815)

(and that’s deleting a few that Rhino or Shout! have already done)

Excuse the third message in a row, but it occurred to me they could do a more specific “Crashed Pilots” set with

    Stranded in Space (305)
    Code Name: Diamond Head (608)
    San Francisco International (614)
    Agent for H.A.R.M. (815)

although that would go against the usual “two Joel/two Mike” pattern.

    111 Moon Zero Two

    704 The Incredible Melting Man

It’s a 2 Joel/2 Mike split, and all eps have yet to be commercially released. No double-dipping required!

The Dubbed Italian Flims box set:

    Escape 2000
    Colossus Vs. the Headhunters
    Devil Fish
    Diabolik

The “Shoot the Moon” box set:
    Moon Zero Two
Rocket Ship X-M (which misses the moon and ends up on Mars, IIRC, but whatever)
    Crash of Moons
    12 to the Moon
Track of the Moon Beast (alternate)

The “MSTie Moments” box set: (ruined by the fact that two ar released already)
    Mitchell
    Samson Vs the Vampire Women
    Laserblast
    Diabolik

Personally I’d perfer Season sets, but barring that I’d probably go for international sets. Russo-Finnish, Japanese, Italian…
Or how about an Ed Wood, Bert I. Gorden, Coleman Francis, Roger Corman blow out set.

  16. CMWaters says:

    My set would be this:

    101: The Crawling Eye
    202: Rocketship XM
624: Samson vs. The Vampire Women
then either 801: Revenge of the Creature or 1013: Diabolik

That way, you have the first episode, the first appearance of Frank, the last appearance of Frank, and either the first Sci-Fi ep or the last overall ep.

    522 – Teen-Age Crime Wave
523 – Village of the Giants
    601 – Girls’ Town
    610 – The Violent Years
    809 – I Was A Teenage Werewolf

#20 beat me to it – here’s a similar list

There are so many Juvenile Delinquent films to chose from, I’ve split them into two sets. All are B&W and feature some of the hottest MST Babes ever (Mamie Van Doren, Ann-Margret, etc.). And most are very funny episodes…

    Naughty Boys:
    307 Daddy-O
    415 The Beatniks
    522 Teenage Crime Wave
    618 High School Big Shot

    Nasty Girls:
    112 Untamed Youth
    601 Girl’s Town
    610 The Violent Years
    615 Kitten With a Whip

Since Warrior of the Lost World is coming out soon, that leaves these post-apocalyptic episodes:

    Apocalypse Then!
    107 Robot Monster
    110 Robot Holocaust
    403 City Limits
    705 Escape 2000
and as a bonus, throw in K20 The Last Chase w/Lee Majors and Burgess Meredith

Actually I think the KTMA episodes would make a good limited edition collection. Charge us fans top dollar to pay for acquiring the rights to these things. I’m thinking $200-300, like that Beatles In Mono set. A rip-off, sure, but its likely the only way to see them released.

I would love to see the very first episode # 101 The Crawling Eye # 306 Time Of The Apes # 703 Deatstalker….. and #1013 Danger: Diabolik! Sort of a begining, middle, middle, end type of thing and toss in #K04 Gamera vs. Barugon or something earlier as a bonus!!!! That would be an awsome box set!!!!!!

    The “Less-than-Super Natural” Boxset.

    The Undead
    The Touch of Satan
    The Screaming Skull
    The Magic Voyage of Sinbad

(It was hard to find a magic-themed movie for Joel’s tenure without impeding on the Hercules movies or the Russo-Finnish quartet.)

  30. Warren says:

“2001” actors set: Riding with Death, Devil Doll, Gorgo, and The Magic Sword. Three with William Sylvester and one with Gary Lockwood. OR
Master Ninja 1 and 2 & It Conquered the World (Lee Van Cleef) plus Revenge of the Creature (a few seconds of Clint Eastwood). Both actors were in Sergio Leone’s westerns. So it’s not a theme like made-for-tv or spy stories but I’d gladly buy either of these.

how about a Bert I Gorden pain parade?

    The Amazing Colossal Man

Unfortunately, Rhino had this (I have my VHS copy yet) but had to pull it. Don’t know if it would be possible to get rights again.

Personally, I’d like a dual Kaiju set.. with the all the Gamera and the two Godzilla movies (can’t do a count in my head on Gamera)

    808 The She-Creature

Are you proposing that Wild Wild World of Batwoman has a plot? Can you back up that claim?

  36. Mela says:

Hmmm… I’d suggest an Ed Wood box set, but that’s only three movies:

423 – Bride of the Monster
    610 – Violent Years
    613 – Sinister Urge

Also, Sinister Urge was also already released. Still, maybe it could come with a new Shorts compilation?

Or, how about “Hooray for the 70s”, which would be a bit Mike-centric (and again, is already mostly available):

    512 – Mitchell
    622 – Angels’ Revenge
811 – Parts: The Clonus Horror
    814 – Riding with Death

I’d love for a Planet of the Bobo set, with episodes 801-804, and an Observer World set with episodes 805-808. Hell, you could even package the latter in a brain bowl.

    # 35 Are you proposing that Wild Wild World of Batwoman has a plot? Can you back up that claim?
    ========================
Apparently. This is just part of a
plot review in “The agony booth.”

“The rookie is given the glass but hesitates, asking if she has to. She’s told it’s part of the ritual…. the rookie drinks and remarks that it tastes good and not all like she thought. The others join in, laughing…
Aimless Brunette: Now that you’re one of us, I can tell! We’re vampires all right, but only in a synthetic sense. Drinking the real stuff went out with Count Dracula.
    Dumb Rookie: So what’s this?
    Blondie: A real groove.
Aimless Brunette: Honey, mint cherry and strawberry yogurt!…
We then cut to the title card. If you’re hoping to see the three women from the prologue again, you’re out of luck, because not only do they have nothing to do with the story, they never appear again. You see, this bit was tagged on after DC Comics hauled Warren into court, in an effort to convince audiences that this “Batwoman” is a bat woman because she’s a vampire, not because she has anything to do with Batman.”
    =====================
See. The plot was so complex and the cinematography so brilliant that DC Comics had to intervene to prevent the destruction of its empire should this film succeed. (Looks like Tom Servo’s Sarcasm Sequencer Overload is influencing everyone here).

Maybe there could be sets with separate Joel & Mike themes as a sort of “Double Feature” for harder to group episodes.

    Mike Example:

Mads in the Theater – Last Of The Wild Horses & Quest Of The Delta Knights

I think they should have done a set with “Crawling Eye”, “Sampson & the Vampire Women”, “Laserblast”, “Creature from the black lagoon” and “Diablolik”. All the Important first and last episodes. Also it would be great if they did an all Observer package with episode 805 to 808. It would be awsome!

Finnias Jones@#27: Limited edition sets that Shout! warns us in advance will go out of print, to replace the Rhino era tradition of it just sneaking up on us? (I still don’t have the Beginning of the End DVD, but that got me off my butt to jump on every other set before any went out of print)

    BRILLIANT!

On Travis’s likelihood for release list, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster has the only “When Hell Freezes Over” rating, since Toho/Sony will never give up the rights, and that’s one of the few titles that could bring a potentially company-killing lawsuit if they pulled a Godzilla vs. Megalon stunt like Rhino.

BUT – and I hope this never, ever happens – if Shout! were to find themselves in the unthinkable situation of going out of business, leaving no company that could be sued within a year, but still had the resources to pull off an online order only release of one last MST3K box set, well, Joel says when ya’ got lemons…

Illegally release the 4 episodes judged least likely to ever get a legit release in our lifetimes! My guess would be:

213 -Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster

306 -Time of the Apes (Featuring the Sandy Frank Song, likely his main sore point)

309 -The Amazing Colossal Man (Take THAT first rights holder to reneg!)

910 -The Final Sacrifice (Because the rights holder specifically said “no”)

“Hell Freezes Over” would denote the legit rights to all of these becomming available, so this worst case scenario set would be called:

    “Hurry! Before Hell Thaws!”

But that’s such a morbid possibility to consider that I much prefer the impossibilities of those ‘Complete Planet-Story-Arc’ sets Wampa Joe proposed.

How about a boxset for MST3Kinfo/nationwide fanclub! The first episode where the nation-wide MST3K fanclub is announced on the show, the first episode with the MST3Kinfo website coming up, the first show where they missed mentioning the fans at the end of the show, and stuff like that. Plus bonuses and Minneapolis fanclub clips to boot. Maybe even to the point where original content is made by Mike, Kevin and the rest?

@44 – No, that’s a completely DUMB idea… how about the 2 greatest episodes that merit Joel (not the greatest episodes of MST3K, but episodes that had a lot of Joel’s acting & riffs…) and the 2 greatest Mike episodes (Ditto) and a 5th episode to break the tie — all of it voted on by the fans, here! Yeah, I’ll go with this idea instead of the previous one…
