Weekend Discussion Thread: Ideas for Future Shout Factory Sets

Alert reader David Finn writes:

Last weekends topic of the Russo-Finnish films generated a universally loved idea for a DVD box set of the 4 films. This got me thinking about other ideal groupings of MST episodes. Granted this is mere wishful thinking as neither Shout nor Rhino have used common themes to organize previous sets. But we can fantasize…
A few to start us off… juvenile delinquents, hypnotism, made-for-TV, Corman, Lippert, kaiju…

All good ideas! Let hear some more!

Edwin B. Miller #45 – Yes! Big bugs! Awesome idea! Perhaps a nice extra could be a large rubber spider or grasshopper, just like Mike attacked the postcards with in “Beginning o/t End”!

    Finnias Jones #47 – Hahahahaha!!

I was also thinking of an “Oscar Winner” set with “Revenge of the Creature”, “Angels Revenge” and “Outlaw”, but now that Roger Corman is an Oscar winner, the possibilities are endless!

I gotta say, #23 has had the best idea so far (apart of course from the Russo-Finnish set we all want). A boxed set I’d like to see would be…
    “The Horrors of Party Beach”
“Attack of the the Eye Creatures”
    “The Crawling Eye”
and “It Conquered the World” (which we’ll never get for Susan Hart must have everything for herself…) -I call it “The Googlie Eyes Collection.

even more pure fantasy…combine box sets with either rifftrax or ct where applicable.

so round out the Ed Wood collection of:

    Sinister Urge
    Violent Years
    Bride of the Monster

with rifftrax rendition of Plan 9 :D

    Coming in late to this party but really enjoyed virtually all of the posted suggested sets. This will sound pretty lame compared to most of the preceding;

    MARTIAL ARTS SET

Godzilla vs Megulon (Jet Jaguar has Kung Fu grip!)
    Master Ninja I
    Master Ninja II
    Future War

    Includes free bottle of Hi-Karate.

In closing, I wonder what would happen if Max Keller ran into Runaway? My guess would be that they would try to talk to each other, not understand a word either was saying and get into a marial arts fight where Runaway would eventually kick the crap out of Max and then get beat up by an elderly Master Ninja who then dies of an heart attack.

I think Shout! Factory should work on getting the “Difficult to acquire” episodes out of the way. The ones that will have expensive rights issues or will need some warming over with the creators/rights holders to get out.

Namely, the Sandy Frank episodes, Gamera, Godzilla, The Amazing Colossal Man/War of the Colossal Beast, etc.

I don’t see how the Gamera movies would be difficult to get. Shout! has released Gamera Supermonster! as part of their Elvira Movie Macabre collection, so it’s entirely possible for them to get these movies.

The Godzilla ones probably not so much, but maybe we need to show Toho Inc some lovin’, who wants to help me with what I will call “The Great Plan For Much Godzilla Enjoyment”?

    It’s three fold:

1.) Come up with a really nifty Haiku and translate into Japanese

2.) Buy some really nice flowers.

3.) Send it to Toho Inc.

    The Torgo set :
424:Manos: Hands of Fate (with special extra, the documentry: Hotel Torgo (2004) )
    523: Village of the giants
    614: San Francisco International
    620: Danger! Death Ray
624: Samson vs. the Vampire Woman
It could come packaged in what appears to a large knee and come with a small figure of Torgo or a varient package with a figure of Torgo the White.

My suggestion would be the if you have already bought the movies without MST3k, then you should be able to by the MSTied version. This includes:
Track if the Moon Beast (I have four copies)
    Beast of Yucca Flats
    The Amazing Transparent Man
Squirm (I don’t have this, but have seen it at COSTCO)
    Bride of the Monster
    The Crawling Eye
    Earth vs. the Spider
    War of the Colossal Beast
    The She Creature
    The Magic Sword
    Project Moonbase
    Robot Monster
    The Slime People
    The Violent Years
    The Screaming Skull
    The Indestructible Man
    The Mole People

If we have already given some love to the rights holders of these movies, they should return the favor.

My inner masochist would like to recommend:

JOHN AGARATHON! Starring the smug science of John Agar!

    The Mole People
    Revenge of the Creature
    Women of the Prehistoric Planet

I think that’s it. But really, three Agar films are probably enough.

I’m dropping out of the race and putting my weight between Finnias Jones’ reworking (#23) of my original idea (#20). Not only does it work with the 4-piece set restriction, and bring in some better episodes that I’d missed, it enforces the gender segregation so clearly desired by those behind most of those movies…

how about a Bert I Gorden pain parade?

    The Amazing Colossal Man

Unfortunately, Rhino had this (I have my VHS copy yet) but had to pull it. Don’t know if it would be possible to get rights again.

Personally, I’d like a dual Kaiju set.. with the all the Gamera and the two Godzilla movies (can’t do a count in my head on Gamera)

    J/P=?

yeah I know, but they had it for like a month, it’s very hard to find.

fine make it King Dinosaur instead.

A Lippert set with all 4 Lippert movies from Season 2 would be my fondest MST3K related wish come true, next to them making new episodes of the show.

    Other wish-list sets:
    – An all Gamera set
    – Fugitive Alien I & II in a set with Time Of The Apes and Mighty Jack
    – All 4 Russo Finnish films would be a great set
    – A sword-and-sandal/sword and sorcery set with Hercules And The Captive Women, Hercules (original with Steve Reeves), Colossus and the Headhunters, Outlaw

Anything that gets Village of the Giants on DVD.

I’d be more than glad to have Rhino email me for information regarding my webpage or in some way help contribute information. (after all, it was MST3K that made me continue to find out more about this strange film I saw in my pre-teen years, un-riffed).

Couple are on DVD already but how about rounding up all of the “astronaut returns to Earth as an unholy abomination” films (what’s funny is that MST barely touched the tip of the iceberg of this unlikely, but plentiful, genre – First Man into Space, Astronaut’s Wife, Creeping Unknown (aka Quatermass Experiment), Dark Universe)

    Great thread, lots of entertaining sets. Since there are ‘Hot Girls’ & ‘Twin Peaks’ sets, I thought that since there have been no suggested sets aimed at our female audience, I would submit one for them;

The Amazing Colossal Man-Big guy in diapers
The Amazing Transparent Man-Aren’t they all transparent?
The Brute Man-Tall & dark anyway.
The Incredible Melting Man-His heart will melt for you.
The Projected Man-He’s either projecting or blocking!

I’d buy any set with Pumaman and San Francisco International. Pumaman because it’s one of the best and SFI because I went to school with the director’s (John Moxey) son and talked with him many times. I choked when I was watching the SFI episode and the director’s name appeared. I called his son and told him it was on. He said, “I know. Cool, huh?” Uuuummmm…not really…
