WooHoo! I can’t wait. Its been kinda slow for movie riffs lately. A lot of shorts, but I usually wait for a collection DVD to be released.
They seem to think it’s a foregone conclusion that everyone’s seen it. Actually, I haven’t seen it. Not really my bag.
Wow. I thought I was the only one who hasn’t seen it. And honestly, I don’t want to.
Well, it’s not out on DVD/BD quite yet, but it will be on April 22.
Now maybe I could get my brother to watch this. :twisted:
This why I love Rifftrax: to watch big budget spectacles without having to focus on the insipid dialogue. Have been waiting for this since I saw it in 3D. A strange movie-going experience as I found it completely immersive in appearance yet emotionally shallow. Hope we get a “Look familiar, Mike?” callback, as Sam Worthington somewhat resembles a young Mike Nelson.
Monster, Laura, you’re not alone. I avoided Avatar like it was some horrible taint cancer until now, but with Mike, Kevin and Bill riffing, I’ll finally cowboy up and watch it. I can tell they’ve been waiting to get their hands on this one, and it’s gonna be great.

Considering the big-budget movies they’ve done recently, it’s no surprise that this turned up on RT’s list. And count me in as one who hasn’t seen Avatar either. People who have keep telling me repeatedly that I have to go see it, and that’s where I get turned off…I hate being told that I “have to see” anything.
The only way I’d ever watch this is with the voices of Mike, Kevin and Bill accompanying it. I probably won’t – I don’t feel like dropping $25+ on a blu-ray that’ll be used simply for mocking purposes – but if a copy comes in my possession I’ll be interested how the Rifftrax guys do with it.
Count me as someone who hasn’t seen this either and don’t have no intention to either.It’s like hearing the same old song all the time,every day,on the radio,then decide you don’t want to buy it.The movie might be technically amazing and all that,but I find it to be a little overrated.Kind of like Titanic..What I’m wanting to know is when Rifftrax is going to do Birdemic:Shock and Terror???

Starman: Yes, for two reasons: First, adding a crapton of 3D eye candy doesn’t change the fact that we already saw this back when it was called “Dances With Wolves.” Second, excessive hype kills pretty much anything for some people; it’s the same reason many of us have never seen anything Joss Whedon has done.
We’re glad you liked Avatar, and that’s why we were happy to let you keep it all for yourself when it was in theaters.
I also haven’t seen it. The people who I know that did see it said it was a really preachy political piece of crap. That being said the Rifftrax “first team” should be able to destroy it hysterically. ;-)

This was such a bad movie to begin with I don’t know if I can see it again.
The Riffing did not even make “The Happening” watchable, and god did they try.
I did not see this movie either. While I wasn’t planning on watching it (without 3-D the magic is somewhat diminished), I have to admit that this Rifftrax news is making think of renting it (not going to buy it) just for that reason. I will wait for the sample at the very least before making a decision though.
Add me to the list of people who haven’t seen it and were actively hostile to the notion of “you HAVE to see this” constantly being told to me about a story I’ve heard a thousand times simply because the 3-D’s good. One of its biggest proponents at work was a woman who said 2012 “really made me think about what I’d do with my family in that situation” (no, I’m not kidding), so if that’s not a red flag about a movie’s quality, I don’t know what is.
That said, Rifftrax made “The Happening” semi-watchable, so maybe I’ll check this out.
Here’s hoping they do District 9 next. Avatar With Wolves I could sit through. I turned off D9 after about 40 minutes. How did that ever get nominated for best picture? It was terrible. Talk about an ugly movie.
Something tells me they aren’t going to be riffing District 9 anytime soon.

@Gary Bowden Birdemic is not out on DVD yet but I follow the director on twitter and he said it would be out later this year. So we’ve got that to look forward to.

Looks like I’ll be buying the bare bones edition they’re releasing next week. Was going to wait till the real release later on if there wasn’t a rifftrax.
Travis: You’d be miserable too if lot of dumb people constantly told you that you had to go see criminally overrated movies. The last time I gave in to them, I ended up watching Slumdog Millionaire, and Danny Boyle still owes me two hours for that. And no, we don’t believe we’re better than those people. We just prefer to think for ourselves instead of doing what pop culture says we should, and… Actually, nevermind; I guess that does make us better. Heh.
Anyway, “Ernest goes to Pandora” would have been awesome. Why’d you have to leave us, Jim Varney?
District 9 should have a Rifftrax. What a boring film!
You don’t like D9? Uh, way to go, I guess. Sorry to deflate your obvious attempt at trolling so quickly, but someone who’s an admitted Avatar fan is going to have an extremely difficult time of hurting my feelings and I don’t want to string anyone along. You’re welcome.
But BS aside, the Rifftrax gang generally avoids R-rated movies, since they want to make the experience accessible to the widest possible audience and District 9‘s graphic violence and Afrikaans potty-mouthing isn’t something the youngsters need to see. You could hold out for a Rifftrax Presents or an iRiff, though; guidelines are looser for those.

Since this movie was the biggest piece of crap to come out of Cameron’s ass since the time he ate a entire box of Allbran (I actually walked out of this film — first time in a LONG time) this is good news. I’m finally going to watch the film all the way through (and enjoy the experience this time).
You don’t have to buy it (I certainly won’t waste the money) — you can Netflix (a month from now) or Blockbuster (the same week) for just a few dollars. This may be the ONLY time I am thankful Mike and Co. are doing a “current” film.
I’ve not seen Avatar, but at the very least it has to be better than Transformers 2. Even Rifftrax didn’t make the piece crap watchable. That one was two full hours of deep hurting.

I’m glad I haven’t because now I’ll have an excuse to. There are several movies I would never dream of watching without help, so to speak, and this is one of them.
On the other hand, if it turns out to be as turgid and overblown a spectacle as Titanic, all the riffing (or alcohol) in the world won’t make it entertaining.
Wow, virtually all the posters so far are in the “haven’t seen it, don’t want to see it” camp. And I couldn’t agree more. I have issues with this movie on at least three levels and that’s without having even heard the dialogue.*
I hope the riffing is notably vicious this time around. I’m still ill over the American public falling for yet another big-budget-effects ruse, and this time more spectacularly than ever before. If effects and moviemaking are your thing, that’s fine. That’s understandable. If however you’re one of the folks who thinks this movie is somehow well-written or profound because you were dazzled by the pretty colors, don’t try to convince me of how awesome it was.
*Bastardizes tragic Native American history for profit, is an unremarkable story sans special effects, and is vastly overrated. Also oversimplifies environmental issues to the point of meaninglessness and re-affirms to Hollywood that style is far, far more important to substance, guaranteeing decades more of empty puff filmmaking on the nation’s big screens.
I agree wholeheartedly with #12, who refers to a movie he has never seen as “overrated”. In fact, kudos to all of you who did not let actual first-hand information inform on your opinion of a work of art. I for one cannot stand Michaelangelo’s David because many people who have actually seen it told me how wonderful it is. Well, their first-hand knowledge is no match for my misanthropic wilful ignorance.
Of course. Cameron is the modern Michelangelo. It’s so obvious, now.
Personally, I just rarely go to see movies, anymore. And I don’t get excited about CGI. Particularly when it’s wrapped around a weak formulaic story. And particularly when the director starts sounding like a wannabe Leni Riefenstahl. My money, right?
Huh, I always figured MST fans liked sci-fi in general and that seeing a James Cameron space fantasy was a no-brainer. And that the announcement of Mike & the guys riffing on it was cause for celebration.
Avatar was fantastic visually, but the story, script, and score were overblown and silly. Its enviro-racial political agenda was transparent and simplistic. The disconnect between the filmmaker’s hippie idealism and his glorification of military hardware was maddening. The movie was big and dumb. Thus the riffing should make it an even more enjoyable experience.
Rifftrax succeeded in making The Twilight Saga, Trannies 1 & 2, The Happening, and Titanic all funny and watchable. And Titanic is not a bad film in the first place, once you get over yourself and actually watch the thing. In some cases, one can “believe the hype”: District 9 was a great movie, as was Slumdog Millionaire.
If you have not seen a movie, your critique of it is worthless. You are making assumptions based on second-hand information. I can respect the statement, “I didn’t see it, it’s not for me,” but to say anything beyond that is “wilful ignorance.” (as Pete @ 36 said)
Isn’t a movie review first-hand information? So could the people who witnessed the Hindenburg crash give first-hand information or only the people who were inside?

Actually second-hand news is how we get things like “Saddam blew up the World Trade Centers”, so that may be a bad example. But we’re all so super-smart and hate things we’ve never seen so… high five. Oh wait, this guy just told me that high fives are cool so I don’t want to do it anymore, let’s just knock elbows or something.
Well, there’s no point in movie reviews at all, then. Or movie trailers, even. We should all go see every movie that comes out because it’s not fair to pre-judge. I’m just trying to follow the logic, here.
Hell, everyone just said they were going to rent it and buy the Rifftrax. In a few days we can start arguing about how wonderful Avatar really is. I just hope no Avatistas declare jihad on Rifftrax for their heresy. They’re only supposed to make fun of BAD movies!

Geez, you’re such a reasonable guy. I was preparing a response to your “Well, there’s no point in movie reviews at all, then. Or movie trailers, even,” statement when you posted again. Just as well, because I can’t really argue with you. (BTW, “Avatistas” is cute, but the correct term is “Avatards”.)
We all rely on press, advertising, and reviews to make consumer decisions. And if this particular movie looked unappealing to you, I wouldn’t disagree. Most of what I saw of Avatar beforehand looked weak, aside from the more overt sci-fi elements (spaceships blowing up stuff), but it was only when I saw the film for myself that I could confidently say “It stinks!”
So don’t get me wrong, Avatar is a BAD movie. I’ll buy the Rifftrax, but won’t rent/buy the movie. Downloading an “.avi” file is the way to go. That way I can enjoy the visuals without giving Cameron any more of my money.
I was going to use that word but I know Rifftrax will use it and I didn’t want to showboat. :)
Your “Why do we have movie reviews?” question would make sense if people weren’t saying that they’re actively avoiding the movie because other people told them how good it was. If you came to the decision not to see it due to reviews, trailers, whatever good on ya. But that’s not what people in here were saying, and that’s not what I was making fun of. I’m making fun of the whole stupid “Oh it’s popular so I’m gonna hate it and anyone who likes it, even if I haven’t actually seen it yet, grrrrrr” attitude. Like I said I haven’t even seen it myself, even though I tried to a couple of times, so I can’t attest to its quality.

After seeing the Riffed version of ‘Matrix: Reloaded’ with my brother; this one should be a real treat.
This coming from the guy who said “I’ll never be happy until they make a film about giant blue cat people!”
No way Cameron is getting any of my money so I’ll have to miss this one. I hope they rip it up though as it seems to be another FX heavy film with an insipid plot. I think I’ll watch a good movie instead, you know something like Manos or Monster a Go-Go :lol: .
I just informed Cameron that he is not getting any of your money. His response was to shake his head slowly, say, “Well, that’s it then,” and stumble blindly out into the parking lot and into his solid gold Porche to drive home weeping, a broken man.
