As for the “Truth” comments, I am deleting them just as I would any other personal attack in this forum.

We don’t have to justify ourselves to anybody but I will say two things about this: 1. There is no payment we get that any other Web site cannot receive. The only difference is that we may have more visitors than some other sites, but that is something we have earned. 2. Any money we receive, and it ain’t much, gets plowed right back into hosting costs (which are probably larger than most other mst3k sites because, well, we have more visitors). Anybody under the impression we are rolling in dough is sadly mistaken.

Cool. Thanks for including me in that song RifftraxRules. Most pleased.

Oddstocks. I walked out on TCM at a re-release in the early 80s. I was 16. Me and a buddy had bragged we were seeing it. But we didn’t tell anybody we escaped to the screen down the hall that was playing Phoebe Cates/Willie Aames “Paradise”. When the chick in the tight red shorts enters the house I just couldn’t take it anymore. Took me about 20 years to revisit it. It’s now a favorite. Oh…so is Paradise, certainly!!! :p I haven’t braved Cannibal Holocaust yet. I definitely will. Why? Hell, I don’t know. It may be harder to explain why some of us enjoy this kind of film than why some don’t. During the 2 Rob Zombie films I had to remind myself it’s only a movie…it’s only a movie! Maybe Kev and Billy will do House of 1000 Corpses next?

If I had the hardware to watch a Rifftrax, I’d order SAW just so they make more RiffTrax using “uncomfortable” films. You don’t HAVE to approve of everything the Brains do. Right?
Variety is the spice of life, people.
“Lolita”? The newer one? Good. She was hot!
“The Devils’ Rejects”? Great! Pee Wee’s girlfriend is in that.
    BTW-
    “SAW” is not “Torture Porn”.
“Slap Happy 3” is Torture Porn…

    @ radioman970

Yeah, I had a similar experience with the first Nightmare on Elm Street. The first time I had to watch it with my eyes half-covered and had nightmares for weeks (granted, I was quite young at the time and shouldn’t have been watching it). The next time, I found it rather comical, and I actually have it in my collection. But again, I can separate Freddie from real life.

I guess it all comes down to the sensibilities of the individual. I generally enjoy most horror movies. But I made the mistake of reading one too many stories about real life serial killers on the Crime Library website, and now can’t handle certain depictions of violence in film as a result. Would I feel the same way if I hadn’t learned what sick things people have actually done to one another? I really don’t know.

I watch movies to step out of real life for a bit and be entertained. I watch MST3K/CT/FC/RT in hopes of having a great belly laugh – not to be reminded of the absolute worst things people can do.

I’m glad the RT folks read these comments, and I hope they’ll take my thoughts, as well as everyone else’s into consideration.

Look, I didn’t say that Rifftrax shouldn’t or couldn’t feature “Saw”. Their choice of movies is their own and I’m not going to argue with that. (Although I’m still not sure why they riffed on the Daniel Craig “Casino Royale” rather than, say, “Moonraker”.)
I’m just saying that I’m not into that kind of movie and I’ll give it a pass. No disrespect intended.

    @ Bat Masterson

Not necessarily! If you really liked chocolate sprinkles, but absolutely hated vanilla ice cream, would you eat a vanilla ice cream cone just because it had chocolate sprinkles on it? RiffTrax benefits from their huge selection; there’s pretty much something for everyone.

Saw seems to be a really controversial title; one that will likely cause them to gain, as well as lose, customers. But from a marketing standpoint, it’s important for them to know how people feel about these selections, so they can make qualified decisions when chosing future titles to riff. They need our opinions.

That said, it must be very frustrating for them to find out one person is gumming up the boards with negativity under multiple names. Hard to get a clear picture of public opinion with that going on.

So RelevantNoise did the POPs thing he accused Rifftrax of doing by creating a bunch of different posts under different names. First sarcastically and then seriously. Way to maintain the moral upper hand, buddy! Now I really want to know how you think people should act.

Anyways. The only reason I’m returning to this thread is because it seems to have caught Rifftrax’s attention, and I would like to tell them: MORE WEIRD AL, PLEASE!!!

    Thank you and good night.

I couldn’t have said it better. Look at this this way: Pinhead, Michael Meyers, Children of the Corn, Freddie and the space aliens all doled out brutal punishment to old people, teens and various innocents via disemboweling, skinning, stabbing, burning, beheading, damning to hell, drowning, dousing in acid, impaling, suffocating and everything in between. Yet that was pop-culture approved, spawned several sequels each and no one thinks twice about making fun of that stuff today. Saw is a stupid, weak (in comparison with the above), unintentionally funny movie with greasy, stupid, unlikable people owning themselves at their own hands with the help of a freaking puppet. I laughed at it when it first came out. People are entitled to their opinions and I could careless either way about Rifftrax nor gore-sploitation movies. But still, I feel it needs to be said.

“A lot of the movies shown on MST were basically the Saws of their day; shock, exploitative crap designed to appeal to the cinema-goers’ basest lizard-instincts and trying hard to push the boundaries of “decency”. The only real change is where the boundaries were at the time of the film (and how much money gets thrown at your Ewe Ed Boll Wood types). I put it to you that in its own way, “The Creeping Terror”’s lingering shots of female asses as they’re dragged kicking and screaming (or debatably worse, limply) into the carpet monster’s… well… it looks like a… um… not a mouth, I’ll say that much… other end, really… any rate. It’s pretty horrible. Bloodlust’s ending was pretty over-the-top. The The Eye Creatures’ greasy peepers…”

Well, I’m all in favour of Rifftrax doing more horror/gore movies. They tend to be very serious, and riffing is funniest on movies that take themselves very seriously. It wouldn’t work so well on funny horror like “Braindead” or “Evil Dead II”, but I for one would love to see Rifftrax take on schlock like “I Spit on Your Grave” and, yes, “Cannibal Holocaust”.

What MIKE K said. More Weird Al!

I only got a single RT so far and it was Weird Al/Mike on Jurassic Park. I figured out that every single thing Weird Al says is funny. It’s how he says it…erm, everything!

Weird Al: “I ran over your 15 year old dog in the street in front of your kids. Soooooorreeee….”

    Me: “Hahahaaahahaa!! Thats…terrible…heh heh…Weird Al.” Sob sob…

Weird Al: “I can’t bring Rusty back but I can put the ‘fun’ back in funeral by playing Amazing Grace on the accordion at his Funeral. “

Oddstocks, I’m still with you on that. I was watching a bunch of horror flicks (TCM, etc) and decided to research the real monsters. I stopped abruptly with Albert Fish. Put the dishes in the sink, give the scraps to the dog I was done!

Stuff like TCM, Devil’s Rejects, Last House on the Left, even your odd zombie film (DAWN) etc really play with my emotions. Devil’s Rejects really earned my respect. For me it was Manson Family from their perspective. The soundtrack was perfect, the violence was raw and disturbing. That director won’t match what he did there. The Halloween remake was proof positive. I was actually worried about what kind of films would follow DR. But so far there is really nothing to get worked up over. SAW seems so unlikely. Instead of the scenes of the victims dealing with their traps perhaps they should show the guy setting up the traps. How does one set up a bunch of razer wire like that? I can’t spread butter on a biscuit without requiring a blood transfusion!!

@Oddstocks, of course we take everything into consideration – we can’t always please everyone, and as has been mentioned before, variety is the spice of life. That’s part of the appeal of RiffTrax Presents, is now we can tackle some of the lesser mainstream (if that’s the best way to describe it) films like Saw, and others that will help take the catalogue in different directions. We’re all about trying new things, and we have some more cool surprises in store, so stay tuned.

@Mike K. – We love Weird Al and it’d be awesome to get him back.

Good luck getting Al again. The man has possibly the most insane touring schedule in history. And he doesn’t even need the money or anything… he just loves the hell out of performing.

But oh man, I’d be all up in dat if Al, Neil or Fred were to do another RT.

To those reading this from Rifftrax, bring back Bridgett, and Mary Jo if possible. I really like having a femole voice in the riffs, as it brings a different flavor to the Rifftrax. That is how I would suggest making Rifftrax more varied. Have Bridgett and other women occasionally as guest riffers, perhaps one of the guys kids could help out. Mike and his kids riffing on Spy Kids or Power Rangers would be great!

  22. Nathan says:

As far as the argument about whether or not Saw is “torture porn,” that’s sort of a slangy genre term folks have come up with to define movies that dwell on graphic acts of torture, or where the audience is expected to be gratified by the depiction of torture-type violence in the film. Something like Hostel, for example, is considered a prime specimen– it shows torture graphically, and a lot of the movie is focused on depicting it, not necessarily to increase tension or add suspense, but because it’s an end in itself. The thought behind the genre term is that the torture in these movies is analogous to the sex in porn– it’s what the audience is really there to see; all the other stuff, like the “plot,” is just there as window-dressing.

I’m not really sure Saw would fit in that genre, although it certainly revels in its gory violence from time to time. It probably does fit, since torture is such a large part of the film. Regardless, it seems a pretty… sincere movie, in that’s trying to give us some mystery and suspense, even though it doesn’t always succeed and probably gets carried away with the gore every now and then.

It’s true, too, some of Rifftrax’s raunchier or more scatological jokes wouldn’t have flown on MST3K. And while that means my mother and my children (if I had any) probably shouldn’t watch Rifftrax, there are ten seasons of MST3K, there’s Cinematic Titanic, and Rifftrax actually does have some specifically “family-friendly” trax– so there’s plenty of riffing for most everbody.

But don’t kid yourself about MST3K, either. My god, it’s ridiculous how much innuendo is in those long, looooong refueling scenes in “The Starfighters” (yikes– no pun intended). When I was a kid, I wasn’t allowed to watch MST3K because of some of the occasional sexual references, and the language. Looking back, maybe I was a sheltered child, but MST3K isn’t always clean, wholesome fun for the whole family, either.

I’m going to be buying this one when my new check card comes in!

I’m pretty excited for this, haven’t seen Bill and Kevin by themselves and the preview looked fairly good. I’ve noticed that in MST3K most of the time it’s Bill and Kevin back and forth with Mike laughing (and don’t get me wrong it does work) and Mike usually came in with a great line. All the Rifftrax I’ve seen so far have been excellent. I originally pirated a few online and then went out to walmart the next day to get a prepaid credit card and bought all the shorts and the riff’s I pirated. Definitely was worth it, and not expensive at all =).

Whether or not you agree it’s in the spirit of MST3K it’s still good quality riffing/heckling/whatever you want to call it.

The torture in SAW is just so way over the top I can’t take it seriously by any means. Nobody would torture people in this manner in real life. It’s fantasy. If they wanna really get “real” in the next SAW movie they should depict a few people being made to swim in a public pool until they prune…I mean, yuck! Public pool! Or find a victim who drives a small economical car and make them trade for your SUV for a month. Tooorchah!!!

I rifftrax is a great idea but now new rifftrax seems to come out nearly every day.
Too much, too often and it’s getting to expensive, I think (for a fan).

And (I know not the topic): I hate the new rifftrax music, bring back the original !

And: Saw is a pretty entertaining movie with a surprise ending.

Just pace yourself Fletch. I only have 1 (it was FREE thanks to my best friend Connor, heh) but plan to pretty much buy the whole set with the exception of Lord of the Rings, once I get done with a MST3K marathon I’m doing.

I can’t laugh at Lord of the Rings since it’s on my Top 10 movie list just after Wizard of OZ (which I also wouldn’t buy, even though I could picture the Wicked Witch of the West doing a brilliant rendition of “Short People got no reason to live”).

@radioman970 – You know, Mike and Kevin are huge LOTR fans and that shows in the riff. You should really give it a shot. It’s not a particularly harsh riff in the same way that the one for Phantom Menace is. Personally I really enjoyed Cloverfield, but I still bought the riff for it. I don’t think the riff was quite as good as some others, but I don’t regret the purchase.

Ford, I watched Cloverfield for the first time last weekend. I liked it too once the Beverly Hills 90210 shenanigans from the opening were done. Can’t wait for the sequel! In fact, I’ve read some recent speculation on the rottentomatoes.com forum that there will be a King Kong Vs. Godzilla movie one day in the future. How about that!

I’m afraid of those RTs for the LotR films. I don’t want to remember a particularly good riff while watching those without the RT. There are just films I love too much and I don’t want them tainted. Maybe one day LotR will wear off on me, but I doubt it. Fellowship truly grabbed me from the opening moments. It was a total shock how impressed I was with that first film and the ones that followed too. The trilogy is just after Wizard of OZ on my favorite movies list.

  29. FordPrefect says:

Radioman970, I’m glad you enjoyed Cloverfield. If you’re thinking about buying it and haven’t yet, I’d say get it at Best Buy because some copies have a bonus disc with a really funny bonus feature called T.J. Miller’s Video Diary. On the Rifftrax site, fans sometimes talk about who they want for guest riffers. One of the suggestions is to have someone from a movie they riffed be a guest. I think T.J. would be a good choice.

You didn’t care for the “Beverly Hills 90210 shenanigans,” eh? I thought they were an interesting way to set up the characters. I was watching the film with a friend of mine and he told be that he got so into the opening stuff, he almost forgot what movie he was watching. They are still “in talks” about a possible sequel. Abrams and Reeves say they have some ideas, but they don’t want to commit to something unless they think it’s worth filming. Wish I could say the same for some other filmmakers.

Toho said something about how they aren’t going to make a new Godzilla film for several years. Maybe a remake of the King Kong Vs. Godzilla movie will be how they bring him back.

As for the Rifftrax for LotR films, here’s my advice. Watch everything in the Rifftrax catalog, except for the ones for the LotR films. Once you’ve done that, watch the LotR riffs. After that, make sure you don’t watch the LotR Rifftrax again for a year. That should help keep the riffs from getting too lodged into your brain. Also, don’t forget that the riffs are for the theatrical versions. That means all the material that’s in the extended versions will remain unriffed.

Ford. TJ was a great character even though you mostly only hear his voice. I do plan on buying it in the future. I hate to say it, but it’ll probably be when it hits the Wally DVD dump. :( …I was actually thinking the movie was going to be more like Blair Witch with a documentary feel. But Cloverfield did quite get there for me. …If big monster movies make a big comeback I know Toho will jump on that. …I’m hopeless as far as the LotR rifftrax. I don’t laugh at anything in it unless it’s supposed to be funny. Like at the end when they’re all jumping on the bed as if an orgy is about to begin. I love that! ;)

Oh, forgot to add that I watched SAW II last night. Very fun film. It should get their treatment as well. Lots of “funny” moments among the suspenseful ones. I’m actually glad I can watch and enjoy horror films like this and it not effect me like some posters here. I can remember the first ultra-violent Italian horror films I watched. Think SAW is bad? Try any film by Fulci.

After just skimming through all 83 replies, I’m more than just a little bit irked that not one of your said, “I just watched Saw with this RiffTrack and it sucked!” Not a single solitary one of you actually listened to it to see if it made the movie better or worse. For the most part all I’m seeing here is gripes about the movie itself, and the vast majority of you gripers haven’t even see the movie in the first place! It’s actually pretty darn good, (Saw 2 was good too, 3 was only so-so, and I haven’t seen 4 yet).

All this complaining is along the same lines as saying “I saw Manos Hands of Fate and it sucked, so obviously the Misty treatment won’t do a darn thing to make it more watchable.”

Ya know what, I’m buying this RiffTrack because I bet it’ll be great… or maybe it won’t. Either way, I’ll be formulating my opinion on actually hearing it with the movie… LIKE ALL OF YOU NAY SAYERS SHOULD HAVE IN THE FIRST PLACE.

    Anyway…

As to the Rifftrax itself, the only negative thing I have to say about it is that it came out about four years too late. On purchasing the Rifftrax, I found that I didn’t have the fortitude to actually watch the movie again but fortunately–or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it–it became so etched upon my psyche during my one traumatic viewing of it that the Rifftrax was quite funny and enjoyable by itself.
