Weekend Discussion Thread: What You’d Like to See on DVD

Alert reader Scott writes:

What do MSTies think of the Rhino and Shout! DVDs in general? What did Rhino do better and vice and versa? What would they like to see as future Shout!
extras?
For me, I’m not a big fan of the stock Shout! DVD covers…I wish they would
get rid of Roman numerals already and mention the episode numbers. “The
Making of MST3K” would make for a great extra.

And while we’re at it: What movie (never mind the rights issues) would you most like to see in an upcoming set?

My thoughts: Even though some of the same people were at both places, it seems pretty clear to me that Shout “gets” MST3K more than Rhino did, especially at the end. The figurines alone show that. I don’t have a problem with the Roman numerals, and I think relying too heavily on the episode numbers might be too confusing for the casual buyer.

As for extras, I would love to see all the TV specials and I really enjoy the introductions by the cast members. The interviews with cast members can be hit and miss, but they’re at their best when Shout is able to coax backstage info about the movie of the movie out of them.

As for an episode I’d like to see, no question: 610- THE VIOLENT YEARS.

What are YOUR thoughts?

  1. Nearly all of my all-time favorite episodes are on DVD except Puma Man and Deathstalker, so I’d go for those in a heartbeat.

305-Stranded in Space. I just can’t take the whole “second Earth” concept seriously. For specials, I don’t know if this counts as as a special, MST3K The Home Game.

I agree about the episode numbers. Casual buyers might start asking why there are different seasons in the sets.

I can answer this question for everyone…

Every single episode of MST3K ever produced that isn’t on DVD/Blue- Ray/streaming video and all of the specials.

    Done. :-)

    It Conquered the World
    The Undead

    Set Two:
    Time of the Apes
    Fugitive Alien I
    Fugitive Alien II
    Mighty Jack

    Set Three:
    The Projected Man
    Puma Man
    The Deadly Bees
    The Space Children

    Set Four:
    Stranded In Space
    Space Travelers
    Girls Town
    Untamed Youth

    Set Five:
    Invasion USA

I would love to have Gorgo on an upcoming release, though it’s not likely to happen.

Also, the Shout releases could mention not only the episode number but who stars in the movie as well.

I would like to see a Shout Factory SOL figurine in the future. No glorified dog bones, but something with excellent details like maybe an Umbilicus!

The Shout Factory box sets are easier to handle, the Rhino sets were better-looking. I’d love to see
the MST3K Home Game episode(“The Day The World Ended”)on DVD. “El burro es Muerto” and ” Without my
ass, life is meaningless” are much-used catchphrases around my home. Does anyone know if the second
broadcast of the Home Game that day had a different set of riffs sent in from viewers? I have the first version on VHS, never saw the second.

When I said “who stars in the movie”, I should have been more specific. Top billing plus supporting cast as well, with a reference to any other MSTied movies the performer has been in.

For my taste Shout! is doing a much better job than Rhino. Three sets per year roughly is certainly better than the two per year Rhino was barely cranking out, though I’d still like to see them released a bit faster, say every quarter. More episodes with a slightly faster release schedule would make me happier. I would also like to see the episode numbers appearing somewhere on each set and have mentioned it on the Shout! Community forum. And I would like to see the “Turn Down The Lights Where Applicable” at the beginning of the episodes where it was used for network broadcast and I have discussed that too with Brian Ward over on the Shout! forum. I like most of the extra features provided so far, but there are a few I’d like to see that haven’t made it yet. Here are my suggestions:

    1) This Is MST3K
    2) The MST3K Scrapbook (originally a tape from BBI)
    3) An audio track with all the songs from the show including some great songs that weren’t on the CD soundtrack produced by BBI. This would be lengthy and would likely have to be split over multiple discs.
    4) The commercials and promotional spots BBI did for the Comedy Channel both for their own show and for public service announcements. The “Death and Taxes” Bergmanesque promo was great and there were several others I’d like to see on extra features. Also, spots produced by Comedy Central using clips from the show to promote it.
    5) All the half-hour shows produced by BBI like the Little Gold Statue Preview Awards.

I would agree with #4. We ALL wish every MST3K episode was available.

As for the DVDs themselves, the only thing I liked about the Rhino discs was the short-lived double-sided ones. The MST3K Standard on one side and the Unedited version of the movie on the reverse. But that was probably very difficult to do legally.

The Shout! Factory extras are superb. I only wish the Crow vs Crow and Servo vs. Servo forums had been recorded a little more professionally. But I don’t think Shout! Factory was responsible for that.

I’m with you, Ralph C. – ideally, I’d like to see every episode released on DVD. I understand it won’t happen, but still…

I thought Rhino did a decent job, but I remember being annoyed by some of their “double-dipping” releases. As long as Shout never adds a previously released title to fill up one of the new sets, I’ll be content. Plus, a lot of the extras in the Shout sets are very well done & enjoyable.

I’m looking forward to the Gamera collection. Beyond that, I’d love to have a set that included Rocket Attack USA & Invasion USA.

Great recommendations thus far and little to add. My suggestion would be a set that is themed by the producer/director such as Roger Corman or BIG. It would be great if they contained featurettes/commentary by the creators.

I’ve wished for every episode to be available for purchase since MST3K started to appear on home video, but there will probably always be a few that don’t make it. Still, I’ve got my wish-list of those currently not available and not scheduled yet. Here are some I’d most like to have:

    1) Rocketship X-M
    2) King Dinosaur
    3) Jungle Goddess
    4) Rocket Attack USA
    5) Outlaw (of Gor)
    6) Space Travelers (Marooned)
    7) Amazing Colossal Man and War of the Colossal Beast
    8) Time Of The Apes
    9) Earth Vs. The Spider
    10) Fugitive Alien I and II
    11) Being From Another Planet
    12) The Magic Sword
    13) Fire Maidens Of Outer Space
    14) Human Duplicators
    15) Hercules (with Steve Reeves), then Hercules and the Captive Women
    16) 12 To The Moon
    17) Alien From LA
    18) Godzilla Vs. The Sea Monster
    19) Diabolik
    20) Mighty Jack

    RE: Every episode won’t happen:
Just last year we got Final Sacrifice, and this year, they’re planning on releasing the Gamera episodes.
    Never say never.

One thing I think Rhino got (almost) right is the shorts discs. Some of the shorts have the best MST material, and if you don’t have the time for a whole movie, you can just watch a few of the shorts to get your fix. I only wish they’d have included the host segments relevant to the shorts when possible.

I love the mini-posters from Shout! and how they integrate with the disc and case art. I understand what Rhino was trying to do with their case art, but I think they stretched it a bit too far and lost cohesion.

For extras, I’d LOVE it if they includeded some promos for the episodes. Unless Comedy Central is against that….

For an episode, I also agree with Sampo that Violent Years should pop up sometime, but if I had to really pick, it would be none other than my #1 favorite Mike episode: 615 – Kitten with a Whip. I will DIE if that episode gets released….

Hopefully Jim didn’t frak up THIS master tape of the episode….

I liked how Rhino did artwork for the disc specific for the film vs generic art…but that’s not really an issue. The “dim your lights…” should be used whenever it was used on the episode. also the part where they announced the episode “reel one take one” should be used too. Lets drop the whole they are not worthy of being released bullcrap….get working on the KTLA era including the demo and missing episodes……so what if they less than great, they made them and I want to see them in pristine condition!

Double sided disks and Alien From LA were already mentioned. Roman numerals are OK in that they put them apart from the Rhino
sets. In response to the episode numbers, how about a tab on this
page listing all the episodes from all the seasons and their
status for example episodes that have yet to be released on DVD,
episodes that are released and can still be purchased, episodes that are out of print and when they stopped producing them, episodes that will never be released and the reason (master episode tape destroyed perhaps) and so on. I’m sure there are
other flags the episodes can get that would be informative but it’s a start. It would be neat to see how close we are to
getting the entire series released with a gauge or percentage. Slightly off topic but it’s my first discussion posting.

Technically I’m inclined to agree with number 4, too. I’m also excited to see the Gamera box set if it comes to fruition.

    However, that being said:

    The Violent Years (natch,)
A box set of Bert I. Gordon films (Earth vs. the Spider, Village of the Giants, etc…
For that matter, a box set of Sandy Frank films
    Village of the Giants
Some of the season one hard to find stuff (most notably, Women of the Prehistoric Planet, Untamed Youth, Robot Holocaust, etc..)
    Alien from L.A.
    Being from Another Planet
    Wild Rebels

Has the MST3K scrapbook been released on DVD? That would be something I would love to see. Throw in some Rifftrax/Cinematic Titanic episodes, too, becuase I don’t think any of the shows are venturing into northern Florida anytime soon.

I also want to see the episode numbers somewhere on the DVD. And they don’t have to be too large and prominent to confuse casual viewers. But just a mention somewhere of the episode number would be good.

I’m not wild about Season One episodes, and their regular presence on Shout boxes is a bit annoying, but hey I really don’t want to complain about how I get my MST3K fix, I’m just happy to be getting it.

For extras, it’s a pipe dream but I’d like either the deleted footage from MST3K: the movie, or the Scifi Channel specials where they did the Oscar nominee clips.?MST3K riffing on Titanic, if only for a few glorious minutes, is one of those “the fates have smiled upon us” things.

Also, there was an MST3K short included as an extra on a Playstation Magazine pack-in demo disc, or something of the sort. Basically Mike and the Bots riff on some Sony ad reel stuff. It’s really odd, but there are some hilarious moments regardless. “You see why we prefer FAKE people?!”

The one episode I’m really waiting for is 806 – The Undead. Still my favorite Sci Fi episode. I’ve also always had soft spots for 311 – It Conquered the World and 516 – Alien from L.A.

As for extras, maybe episode-specific interviews with individual cast members. I liked hearing Frank talk about the Beast of Yucca Flats in that particular documentary, and hazy memories aside it’s probably worth doing for other episodes as well (they don’t have to have full documentaries, just the interviews).

I have to agree with the idea of themed sets, like the Bert I Godon collection, Roger Corman, Robert Lippert etc…
Or themed by subject, like a set of Westerns:
    Gunslinger
    Last of the Wild Horses
    The Painted Hills

    Or a Big Bugs set:
    Earth vs the Spider
    Giant Mantis
    Beginning of the End
    Giant Spider Invasion

    Spy set:
    Operation Double 007
    Secret Agent Double Dragon
    Agent for HARM
    Danger! Death Ray!

    Crazy Teeners set:
    Daddy O
    Girls Town
    Beatniks
    Untamed Youth

    Ed Wood and Friends set:
    Bride of the Monster
    Sinister Urge
    Violent Years
    Racket Girls

I’d like to see all of the Joel era on home video. Especially season 3 which seems to house most of the episodes I like. KTMA host segments would be a nice addition.

Maybe MST3K The Movie on blu-ray. Although I suspect that will never happen as Universal had their chance in 2008 with the re-release and just issued a DVD instead. I don’t know if Shout could or would bother getting the rights from them to put out a blu-ray. Doesn’t seem very likely as Shout still hasn’t gotten any Universal owned episodes out yet either.

I’d also like Shout to take the time to fix video errors from the tapes they transfer. These DVDs are likely as good as the show will ever be for viewing by consumers. A little more care in the final product would go a long way towards making me a happy, repeat business customer.

I would also love to see the VW BUS figurine And maybe a coffee can lid SIZED BRAIN in BRAIN PAN.( The coffee can lid size would fit in a box like the Gypsy figurine.) How about a JAN in the PAN or MIKE AS STEVE URKEL ( not sure of spelling) A bust of BOBO, Brain Guy, MIKE, JOEL, PEARL, DR.FORESTER TV’S FRANK, A CAMBOT ( bigger than a golf ball smaller than a baseball ) PITCH THE DEVIL, THE VEND-A-GUT MACHINE.???????? Outside of the cartoony graphics, I really like the Shout! releases. Lots of great films, so many to choose from, but I still want to see The Black Scorpion on disc. The only extra that I can think of not named is the Joel interview from Alan Havey’s show on the Comedy Channel. There’s probably better stuff, but it’s the only unique thing I could think of. As far as inserts, I’d love to see a little table and door like the bots made in season one, with the little Joel figure. That’d be cool.
