Weekend Discussion Thread: What You’d Like to See on DVD

Alert reader Scott writes:

What do MSTies think of the Rhino and Shout! DVDs in general? What did Rhino do better and vice and versa? What would they like to see as future Shout!
extras?
For me, I’m not a big fan of the stock Shout! DVD covers…I wish they would
get rid of Roman numerals already and mention the episode numbers. “The
Making of MST3K” would make for a great extra.

And while we’re at it: What movie (never mind the rights issues) would you most like to see in an upcoming set?

My thoughts: Even though some of the same people were at both places, it seems pretty clear to me that Shout “gets” MST3K more than Rhino did, especially at the end. The figurines alone show that. I don’t have a problem with the Roman numerals, and I think relying too heavily on the episode numbers might be too confusing for the casual buyer.

As for extras, I would love to see all the TV specials and I really enjoy the introductions by the cast members. The interviews with cast members can be hit and miss, but they’re at their best when Shout is able to coax backstage info about the movie of the movie out of them.

As for an episode I’d like to see, no question: 610- THE VIOLENT YEARS.

What are YOUR thoughts?

I’ve always felt that the double sided discs with the unMSTied versions of the movies were something I liked that Rhino did. Many of the movies that MST did aren’t on DVD and are so bad that nobody’s likely to put them out. Also, I agree the “Shorts” DVD’s were something Rhino got right. There’s still enough unreleased shorts (many from unreleasable episodes) to fill another disk. I love all the extras that Shout has been able to get (Especially the “MST3K Hour” wraps Mike Nelson did), and how responsive Shout is, in general, to us MSTies.
    Eps I’d like to see…
It Conquered the World (always been my favorite, ’cause it was on of my favorite sci-fi movies as a kid)
    Girls Town
    Invasion of the Neptune Men
    Horror of Party Beach
-Hey, Courtious Martian – I never saw the first “Home Game” but recorded the second one on VHS (I still have it). I’m pretty sure it’s different – I kinda remember them giving people two opportunities to riff the movie. During the strip scene, does someone riff “Margaret Thatcher like you’ve never seen her!” -?

Track of the Moon Beast and It Lives By Night. I generally
like the Mike movies better (especially the intermission bits)
and it would almost wrap up season 10.

I am really hoping for the half hour specials they did (Little Gold Statue Preview Special, etc.). I don’t care for the extra mini-posters, since they are the same art as on the dick cases.
What I really wish they would change is the menu animation. There is just something really wrong about MST3K in CGI. You’re telling me it would be more expensive to make a cheap set and use puppets? COnsidering that this is the first thing you see when you pop in the DVD, it’s off-putting and really doesn’t evoke the show at all. Given how in every other regard Shout! has shown they “get” the show, this surprises me.

Oh, and improvements to dvds (if possible) would be
    a) uncut versions of the movies- I believe Rhino did
    that a few times.
    b) subtitles. There are some comments or movie speaking
parts I can’t make out. For example, in Swamp Diamonds, when
they’re escaping in the really big car the policewoman makes
some comment to the leader of the pack that apparently makes
her suspicious but I can’t hear what it is- and that is a
    key slip.

I think Shout has done a great job so far with the sets with no real complaints. The documentaries from Ballyhoo have been excellent as well. Rhino started off weaker I think, but towards the end they were including more extras. If Shout gets the rights to former out of print Rhino episodes, they should keep on doing what they did with Beginning of the End and Incredibly Strange and just release them separate from future sets. I think that would keep everyone happy in this rowdy lot of MSTies!

I would include any and all Making Of specials, the complete MST Scrapbook, and the Last Dance RAW! on future discs as well as the complete 2nd Poopie. I think only part of the 2nd one was available on a Rhino set. As long as BBI has it, use it, I know I won’t complain! Bumpers and adverts from all eras would be appreciated. (Having Crow talk about turkeys containing enough drugs to knock you on your sorry Thanksgiving a**, has brought many a smile to this viewer.)

Oh and Shout should never think we get tired of seeing cast and crew members talk about episodes. The individual cast intros are always welcome! Having that bit with Jeff Stonehouse was great, how about Jef Maynard or Brad Keely or Patrick Brantseg or Beez McKeever or Barb Tebben?

As far as episodes go, regardless of the squabbles over rights:

    Rocketship X-M
    Daddy-O
    Amazing Colossal Man
    It Conquered The World
    War Of The Colossal Beast
(Attack Of The) The Eye Creatures
    The Day The Earth Froze
    Operation Double 007
    Radar Secret Service
    Village Of The Giants
    Girls Town
The Dead Talk Back (To correct the tape problems that were present before because they are incredibly distracting, if possible and I know that’s being nitpicky)
    Code Name: Diamond Head
    The Violent Years
    San Francisco International
    Danger! Death Ray
    The Rest of Season 7
    Revenge Of The Creature
    The Deadly Mantis
    The She Creature
    Riding With Death
    Agent for H.A.R.M.
    Horror Of Party Beach
    The Pumaman
    The Screaming Skull
    Track Of The Moon Beast
    Diabolik

Also I know I am not the biggest fan of the Season 1 shows, but I would rather have these shows than having Shout box sets with episodes that I already own from the Rhino sets. That would really irritate because I hate it when any other DVD set would do something like that whether it be for movies or TV shows.

If anything I’ve been able to get acquainted with the 1st season better because I found the show during the 2nd season. So seeing what I missed has been interesting to say the least. Shout could take the cheap way out and just fill slots with public domain movies that were already released, but they haven’t so far and I thank them for that.

Both companies are thumbs up from me!

Loved the Rhino covers. Always creative and interesting. Although not always in keeping with the flavor of the show but reflecting the kind of movies from the episodes. I still liked them though. I felt they did the best they could to get us some great episodes we could buy and replace our old VHS or DVD-r with. I like the company overall anyway and miss the Krofft stuff they were releasing before. Some things I missed and would sure like those to come out in the future from some company.

Shout! Factory is one top notch operation. Non-MST3K stuff they are releasing is really taking a lot of my $$$. Their MST3K sets are superb. I don’t have a bad thing to say about them. The covers are actually more in keeping with the MST3K flavor than Rhino’s were. They look like funky movie posters. I love em! I wish I’d gotten all the figurines. Getting interviews from actors, film crew…very much a plus. Like others are saying, unMST3K versions of movies is also a desire.

Now, what release would I like next? WelL..LET’S SeE..AND…???

OOPS! THE ALL CAPS IS STUCK… ANYWAY… NEXT RELEASE, ****TIME OF THE APES**** SPECIAL SET WITH EXTRAS AND THE COMPLETE UNMISTIED MOVIE INCLUDED. THERE THAT Did it… oh! And the caps is unsticked! Yaaaay!!!

Tee hee. (I hope an automatic SPAM thingy doesn’t delete my post…I was really just shouting about what I want to come out next hee hee)

Just wanted to add, even if Rhino already released the episode or Shout! did in a previous set, interviews with ANY actor or crews for ANY episode, doesn’t even have to be from the one contained on the release, would be fine. Interviews with the Time Chasers actors or crew…Joe Don Baker..hehe he! Anybody! Time of the Apes cast would blow my mind! Make some calls to Japan!!

  10. Stoneman says:

Well, you “feelthy peegs” already mentioned evrything I would at one post or another:

    1. I liked the Rhino cases better than Shout!’s, as well as having scene selection menus, but I love the figurines Shout! has done.

    2. Absolutely have some more shorts exclusive discs.

    3. I also would like to have the unMSTed version of the episode, like they did early in the Rhino releases, and more recently on the Rifftrax version of “Night of the Living Dead”.

For extras, I very much enjoy the fairly in-depth documentaries Shout! has offered, e.g. “Robot Monster”, “Bride of the Monster”, “Santa Claus” and “Beast of Yucca Flats”.

Episodes I would like to see? First and foremost, the Universal movies that started Season 8. Preferably all five of them (“Revenge of the Creature”, “The Leech Woman”, “The Mole People”, “The Deadly Mantis”, and “The Thing That Wouldn’t Die”. I can’t see leaving any one of them out to maintain the standard four disc set, because they are all classics in my opinion, and I would pay extra for a five disc set.

Single episodes I would like to see at some point soon:

    The Sidehackers
    Catalina Caper
    Angels’ Revenge
    I Was a Teenage Werewolf
    Cave Dwellers
    Pod People
    Riding With Death
    The Skydivers
    The Creeping Terror
    I Accuse My Parents
    Horror of Party Beach
    Quest of the Delta Knights
    Mitchell
    The Brain That Wouldn’t Die
The Wild, Wild World of Batwoman
    The Unearthly

I know many of these were released on VHS, but I would like to have them on DVD also, with any restoration efforts possible made. The documentaries for most of them would be pretty good too, I think.

Ok, I’ll stop now. Good stuff so far, everyone.

I really like #18s suggestion about a list of availablity issues to have on Satellite News. Or does this already exist on here?

Since the Gamera set is supposed to be happening, anything else that would be released would just be icing on the cake but I would love to see both Fugitive Alien movies, Kitten With a Whip, Operation Double 007 and San Francisco International. Oh, and for Godzilla vs Megalon to be re-released since I have NEVER seen this one since you cant even find it on YouTube.

I personally really love the intros by the cast members that they have started doing more recently on the Shout discs. More of those please!

Just a thought from my DIY DVD’s, would anyone like to see the serials (Commando Cody, Undersea Kingdom, etc.) put together into separate discs as well as being with the original movies? The Shorts have been combined like that, but the serials haven’t (AFAIK)

I like the interviews, both with MST3K cast members and the cast of the movies. They really give great insight into the how and why the movies and episodes were made. For movies I’ll go with one each from Joel and Mike: The Magic Sword and Quest of the Delta Knights.

What I liked about the Rhino packaging was the screen shot of the episode on the back cover. It helped me determine which episodes I was looking for at the time for purchase. Another nice feature from Rhino was the original movie on the disk.

I hate the figures that Shout! includes in their sets. Costs more money and if you don’t want the figure, then you have to wait quite a long time for them to release the volume without the figure. The animated menus are overkill. I just buy them to see the show/movie, not all the bells and whistles.

Episodes that I want to be released are Daddy-O, Track of the Moonbeast and Pumaman. But any of them being released is a good thing.

  18. Sharktopus says:

    @ John Paradox,

I had considered creating compilation DVDs of the serials, mostly to see if they might make a lick of sense when viewed continuously, but I came to the conclusion that I’d probably only ever watch them once, since the repetition and general dreariness of the serials bore me to tears. I have compiled discs overflowing with shorts, though. I love me some shorts, and I can watch those over and over.

I never liked the hodgepodge design of the Rhino DVD boxsets. (And I think we can all agree that the VHS sleeve design they carried over to the individual DVDs sucked.) I demand uniformity in my DVD collection. It doesn’t really matter though, since I put the discs in individual slim cases with covers I print myself, modified from Josh Way’s excellent work (mst3k.joshway.com). I do this primarily because I’ve never been able to keep track of what episodes are in which boxsets, especially now that we’ve gotten twenty of them. This way I can put them in episodic order, with the title of the movie right there on the spine. Since I do this, I love Shout’s packaging which already comes in slimcases. I just slip my cover over Shout’s (with the nifty starfield still showing through inside), snip the edges off the miniposters to use as nifty inserts, and toss the boxes, which are really blandly designed anyway.

I can really think of no way in which Shout’s releases aren’t superior to Rhino’s. I never used Rhino’s scene select function anyway, which is the only feature Shout doesn’t offer. And I hate double-sided DVDs. It’s nice to have the uncut version of the movie available, but how often are you going to watch Eegah unMSTed? Plus flipper discs are teh suck. :teeth:

  19. KJB says:

I prefer the individual slim cases from Shout because you can rearrange the episodes in order on a shelf and since the titles are on the spine it’s easy to find a specific episode. I think the art work for the Rhino sets is superior though. I could do without the Shout mini posters. They lack detail and look rather bland. It’s great to have these episodes though regardless of who’s releasing them.

Oh yeah, that’s another area where Shout beats Rhino – legally securing the rights to the movie before they send it out to retail. Amazing Colossal Man, Beginning Of The End, The Sinister Urge, Godzilla Vs Megalon… did Hellcats get pulled right away, too? I feel like I’m forgetting one.

Well, we need to get The Slime People out so we can get the last of the Commando Cody episodes. I would actually love to see the Cody shows by themselves, then finish up the serial. After all, the serial itself MUST be public domain. Isn’t it?

I suppose we’re getting a holy grail in the Gamera films (even if they won’t have scenes from the KTMA shows), but we’ve got a few collections Shout! can put out.

We definitely need a Mr. BIG set: The Amazing Colossal Man; War of the Colossal Beast, Beginning of the End, and The Magic Sword. Tormented? What’s that? :-)

Tormented can go with a “stupid pastiches” set – that way, we can get Bloodlust! too.

But I really want to see Manos re-released by Shout! There’s so much they can add to it now, especially if this guy gets his sequel made: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kK4ZeFW5OmE

Re: Serials. Actually, most are pretty dull by themselves. Remember, they were cheap, crappy little B-features made for kids and weren’t really meant to be watched all at once, back to back. They tend to be ultimately about four hours long and AGONIZINGLY repetitive. Still, I kinda wish the Satellite had gotten a crack at THE LOST CITY, probably the single most deranged serial ever made, and yes I am aware of that thing where Gene Autry had to fight robots in an underground city and thwart a rebellion but had to periodically pop back to his ranch and do a song on his radio show for legal reasons or something…

One thing I’m eternally grateful to SHOUT! for is listing the Extras on the individual DVD cases so I don’t have to search through my old DVDs trying to find which one has the Jukebox, which one has the interview with Mike and Kevin, etc. Also appreciate the snazzier quality of the Extras. The Rhino folks, sometimes it felt like it was just something they tossed in when noone was looking.

Chapters on the SHOUT! releases would be nice, partly because it was always fun to see the titles they came up with. Still, it’s not a major problem for me.

Most of the episodes I’d like have already been listed: DIABOLIK (to bookend the series), INASION OF THE NEPTUNE MEN, SAMSON VS THE VAMPIRE WOMEN, THE DAY THE EARTH FROZE…

  32. Watch-out-for-Snakes says:

Not much to add that not been covered already. I think the SHOUT! sets are slightly superior to the RHINO sets, merely based on the inclusion of copious bonus materials. I liked that RHINO did dual-sided discs for a bit with the un-MSTied version of the movies on the flipside. That’s nice. But SHOUT! really brings the bonus features, and honestly, bonus features sometimes make-or-break a DVD purchase for me.

Future bonuses? How about all the TV Specials, promotional material, and anything and everything they got just sitting around? (I got most of the TV specials on disc now (thanks DAP central!) but it’d be nice to have an “official” release.

Also, I like the interviews with the stars or filmmakers of the movies (The Colman Francis piece, John Mikal Thor interview, for example) included in the sets, and I’d like to see more of that.

Can we get a SQUIRM release with Jeff Lieberman interview? That would be. . .neat.

I’m going to agree with some above statements, more Season 7 episodes please. S7 seems to be underrated (if some of the smacktalk on this website is any indication) amongst MSTies, why I have no clue, but I love ESCAPE 2000, THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN, and DEATHSTALKER. Those are some classics in my house.

Um, other than that, gimme BEING FROM ANOTHER PLANET, THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN, DIABOLIK, PUMA MAN, KITTEN WITH A WHIP, VILLAGE OF THE GIANTS, TRACK OF THE MOON BEAST, and, Oh heck, is there one I don’t want?

    Answer: No.

Really? I don’t have the first three Rhino volumes, but I thought those were mostly episodes from the Sci Fi years, ones that are not on my list. Hmmm…thanks for letting me know, I will have to research that when I have time.

Regarding the issue of having the unMSTed movie, I would watch them, because my wife and I try to come up with original riffs or variations on what the Brains have done. Along those lines, I recently bought a four disc collection put out by Turner Classic Movies, mostly for a DVD of “Them!” and “The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms”, but also included was “World Without End”, which was fun to watch for the reasons mentioned, and we will watch it again sometime. So that is why I would like having the unMSTed movie as well.

As far as Rhino vs. Shout! goes, let’s just be thankful that they do it (or did it). I actually liked the Rhino segment titles.

One suggestion: Since Shout! is releasing the MST3k Hour wraps, make an easy way to be able to fit the wraps into the episode. This may include segment titles, or a special item in the menu.

If I had to pick one episode for release it is “Being from Another Planet.” My copy has some quirks in it, so an upgrade would be nice.

One thing that Rhino did that I would like to see come back (with a twist) is the double-sided disks, but instead of having the uncut version of the movie, have a different MST3K episode (eight episodes on four disks!!!). I would like to see Shout re-release all of the Rhino episodes that were pulled (Hellcats, Godzilla vs. Megalon, etc.) and put them on one collection, marketed as “lost” episodes or something so that it’s clear to everyone what they’re getting. They should also release the rest of seasons 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. Oh, and 7, 8, 9, and 10. And season 1. I’m not really concerned about the KTMA episodes; I watched a couple on Youtube and- sorry, guys- they weren’t anywhere near as good as the later ones. Now that I think of it, the KTMA’s might make a good extra. Shout could release some of the movies that were redone in season 3 (the Gamera movies are the only ones I can think of now, but I know there were more) with the “real” episode on one side of the disk and the KTMA version on the other. It would be a good way to show how the show evolved over the years and give younger viewers a version of Gypsy that looked like she was made from a wicker basket and a Crow with creepy-ass eyes that started straight ahead……

I definately agree with more poopie and the Turkey Day material. I would love to see EVERY episode released to DVD. Even the KTMA originals. I would probably put K00 – The Green Slime as an extra on a DVD since its only a partial. Its probably a better idea to redo the KTMAs that didn’t get redone in season three.

  42. Manny Sanguillen says:

One thing I must say. The factory dvd’s are too inconsistent on the sound quality.

The shout factory dvd’s that I have (most of them) all suffer from having the riffing too much louder than the movie.
My vhs collection, mainly first generation and taped directly from cable, mostly all had an equal sound distribution.

Also the dvds I got from Skyroniter have good sound distribution-much better than the factory releases.
The only one I can think of from sky that didnt was The Screaming Skull, with the same problem the factory releases have, that the movie is too quiet and the riffing being too loud.

If it were equal, you could just turn up the volume, but when the movie is too quiet and you turn it up, it only makes it more annoying because now the ‘too loud riffing’ is excrutiatingly loud and it cant help you to hear the ‘too quiet movie’ no matter how loud you go.

If it’s an episode that has good music, I prefer to watch it on my old tapes or skyroniter’s dvds. Like Wild Rebels or Blood Waters of Dr z.
I know I’ll be saying the same for Gamera vs Zigra.

On the other hand, most of the Rhino dvds were all around quiet, but at least equally distributed.
I have to turn my tv up to 40
(as high as it goes) for many of them.
Pod People and I Accuse my Parents especially.

There are some exceptions to this, like The Girl in Gold Boots and The Touch of satan both seem fine all the way around.

What really sucks is the host segments are loud as hell for both Rhino and Shout, so if you have it up loud because of the quiet movie segments, it blows your ear drums out when the host segments come on.

I also wish the Menus were quieter, because if you fall asleep during the movie, the poor cat has to suffer from the loud menu looping over and over until you finally wake up wondering what the hell that sound is.

You know, when Rhino first started releasing eps on VHS in, what, 1998, I had a HUGE list of “love-to-see released” eps, some from the Sci-Fi years when I discovered the series, and many I had only read about in the ACEG. Over the years, I’ve seen the vast majority of the eps I wanted to see released, far more than I ever actually expected when I first started picking up new-to-me eps on VHS at Best Buy back in ’98. So, a big THANK YOU and thumbs up to both Rhino and Shout for providing me with many of my “dream” eps over the years. I’ve never had a problem with either company, they’ve both kept the MST3K spirit alive. Anyway, Extras I’d like to see on Shout sets are uncut versions and original episode promos, but those are hardly dealbreakers if they’re not there.

As far as wish-list eps, of course there’s no wrong episode to release, the more the better. But, personally, there are the “big two” for me: The Horror Of Party Beach (an ep I love to death, and probably my 2nd favorite of all-time, just behind Prince Of Space). And, Godzilla Vs. The Sea Monster. Yeah, likely, I know. I’m in the minority for sure, but I actually prefer this ep to Megalon! Also, it’s a unique print of the film that AFAIK hasn’t seen an official release. Gotta love Film Ventures hatchet jobs!

Also, Gorgo would be awesome, as would a re-release of Godzilla Vs. Megalon (which was a set I stupidly didn’t buy – d’oh!). I’d love to see Track Of The Moonbeast, Squirm & Diabolik.

The KTMAs I’d love to see get an official release, or at least a few scattered eps. SST: Death Flight is first-choice (I’ll join the many saying it’s the best KTMA; Maybe not always side-splitting funny, but certainly enjoyable and consistently entertaining). Actually, SST, Superdome, and City On Fire (and maybe to a somewhat lesser extent The Last Chase & Hangar 18) would make good releases due to the star-factor in each one. Psase IV & The Legend Of Dinosaurs would also make nice releases/

The two eps from S1 I enjoy the most, Robot Holocaust & Moon Zero Two, also need to find an official release.

Stranded In Space & Space Travelers, despite not really being related aside from the Film Ventures butchering connection, would make a cool two-fer, IMO.

Of course, I have no idea what the copyright status is on all of those, but you know, we’re getting Gameras, so now “anything’s possible”!

How about releasing a Planet Killer Set, with The Deadly Mantis, She Creature, Riding With Death, and Agent for H.A.R.M.?

#93 – I’m with you in the minority. I think that Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster was much better than Megalon, riff-wise. I would add it and Horror of Party Beach to my list of “Would Like to See on DVD” episodes.

I want Squirm, Puma Man and Gorgo. And the thing I love about Shout! is that it’s apparent that they’re working hard to get episodes we previously thought would’ never get released; so there is hope. I’d also like to see Mitchell re-issued, since you can only find it on amazon for $100+ bucks.

As for extras, I’d love to see footage from the films that were cut for time or content (except Sidehackers, no thank you to rape scenes), an example being the Zombie impaling the pasta-throwing psyco in Zombie Nightmare. Another idea would be for shout to feature snippets from the cast’s work from Rifftrax and CT; maybe throw in a new Rifftrax short. :-))

Any previously unreleased episode would be fine, in particular San Francisco International. Also, Shorts 3 deserves a regular DVD release.

    Hmmm….

Well, first of all, I go along with those who want a new release of the “MST Scrapbook”, preferably a new, expanded & updated version to include the latter part of the series. I’d also like to see a release of footage from both ConventioCons and the “MST Alive!” show.

As supplemental materials, I’d go along with clips from Joel’s pre-MST stand-up appearances, as well as the stuff Kevin & Jim did for KTMA, like the Melon Drops. And I have to figure that, somewhere, there has to be some completed footage from the lost Mylar short they were working on when Trace left.

As far as real pipe dream, wish-fulfillment, you’ve-got-to-be-kidding things, here’s three:
-A new release of “Mitchell”, but with the inclusion of John Saxon’s last scene, complete with new riffing by whoever is available.
-A release of “The Green Slime” with the movie actually riffed on. You could split it up, with RT handling the first half and CT taking the last half.
-A true Extra-Special Edition release of MST3K-TM, featuring the movie, the unMSTed “This Island Earth”, trailers/promo materials for both movies, the deleted scenes from MST3K-TM, behind-the-scenes footage and stills from both movies, a new documentary about the agony & the ecstasy & more agony of making MST3K-TM, a documentary about “This Island Earth” and it’s impact & following, and “The Incredible Melting Man” (both episode & unMSTed versions) with an intro explaining the host segments. Oh, and they’d have to get Mark Hamill to narrate the documentary stuff.

Well, a man can dream, can’t he?

I’d like to have the live show from the first Conventio-Con. It was awesome fun!
