Update: Vol. XXI

A further note from Jordan Fields at Shout! Factory:

I’d completely forgotten about the MST Hour wraps for “Gamera” and “Gamera Vs. Guiron” until reading their responses to the extras. Fortunately there is still time to include, so I will. As for the KTMA host segs (or any footage from KTMA), I was not able to include.

Here’s an update Vol. XXI: “MST3K Vs. Gamera” (as it will be called). As you already know it will contain all five Gamera episodes: 302- GAMERA, 304- GAMERA VS. BARUGON, 308- GAMERA VS. GAOS, 312- GAMERA VS. GUIRON and 316- GAMERA VS. ZIGRA. It will be in a tin box. The street date is Aug. 2

The extras will be:
* So Happy Together: A Look Back at MST3K and Gamera
* Gamera Vs. The Chiodo Brothers
* Gamera Obscura: A Brief History by August Ragone (author of Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters)
* Original Japanese Trailers
* 5 limited edition mini-posters by artist Steve Vance

@99..You like the story lines better? And all this time I thought it was the movie and the riffs? Isn’t that like buying a Playboy for the articles? Also, you don’t HAVE to watch one Japanese monster movie back to back,do you? Or you could just not buy the box sets you don’t want, right?? :-))

Think about it. It’s the whole picture/package. Movies, riffs, skits.
And it’s about not having one whole issue, in 4 + months, relatively
wasted by only providing 5 variants of one genre of Japanese monster
movies. I like cheeseburgers and cheesesteaks, but I wouldn’t eat 5
    of them at one time.

    As Terence commented:
    “Moderation in all things.” :-)

Well, you can space out the cheeseburgers and cheesesteaks instead of eating them all at once, but there are some that could eat that 2 or 3 times a day.To each his own.I never watch anything back to back(not unless it was the Turkey Day marathon)anyway, but I do like having the choice to either watch one or the other. There’s no rule that you have to watch them back to back,is there?

@88 bad wolf “Oh just let it go with the KTMA stuff already. Always with the passive-aggressive “thanks but why didn’t you give us this too?”

My, what an overreacting, pessimistic crank you are. What’s it to you if some folks want to see the KTMA eps on DVd someday? They’ve included various KTMA host segments as extras before so it’s not like the people who want them someday aren’t being teased about it a bit ya know? But regardless of how realistic it is to expect them the sentiment is more along the lines of “Having the KTMA eps would be great but this set is still awesome” for any given box set release.

“And are you going to screw up the masters again?” whenever Shout announces a release. How about “Thanks Shout, good job everybody!” for once.”

Wow. Who has ever accused Shout of ‘screwing up the masters’? Not me. I said: “…all I ask is that the video and audio on the masters *are still in great shape* and don’t have any Lost Continent style defects to them.” In other words, I hope the masters Mr. Mallon has for these episodes are still in pristine condition. Wasn’t blaming Shout for something obviously out of their control, but that should’ve been obvious. Maybe worrying a little too much, but if it’s happened a few times (there was also the audio glitch on the Final Sacrifice master), human nature is often to wish that it won’t happen again. So on behalf of myself and all the KTMA fans here, in the words of a certain smart aleck little golden automaton, “BITE ME.” 8-)

Why the clamor for the KTMA episodes? According to “The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Amazing Colossal Episode Guide” “the shows were seminal and formative, which is to say they weren’t very good”. Even the first season episodes don’t have half as many riffs as the later seasons. Why not stick to the good stuff?

Well, good to see the MST hours WILL be included….. but still no KTMA footage for ANY bonus material (including just host segments)? -thinks Jim Mallon is behind this delema-.

Poopers. Oh well. Better than nothing I suppose. Keep up the good work Shout. ^_^

How can anyone complain about a never before released episode being released in the best available version? Are we still nit-picking Joel/Mike issue. It’s a rights issue. When they get the rights they get the episode on a dvd. Simple. I think all the Gamera episodes on one set is major accomplishment. They could have easily been forever blocked from being released by one pissed off rights holder. Joel/Mike – I don’t care, just give what you can get the rights to when you can and I’ll keep buying. Shout! is doing it the right way and I AM GRATEFUL. Keep up the good work.

I think we need a jumbo bottle of antacid for all the belly achers on this thread! Here’s my take:
    KTMA – do not care.
All-Joel eps – I’ll just spread ’em out with other eps.
    All-Gamera set – see above.
Complaining about someone else’s opinions – no thanks!
Keep ’em comin’, Shout! Factory. It’s all good to me(except for the KTMA stuff – I just don’t care!)

@106 Some of us actually like them? They have a crude “Hey! Let’s put on a show!” charm to them. Prototype MST is still MST. Your mileage may vary.

And the Brains certainly weren’t shy about putting lengthy KTMA clips on the Scrapbook tape, and selling it…

Glad to hear the Hour wraps will be in this set. This is why the internet is so great. Fan interaction with the producers of the material we consume leads to a better and happy relationship between the two! That and all the great funny cat videos on youtube.

Re: Why a whole box of Gamera movies. I’m assuming that’s because they can’t really be sure how long they’ll be able to retain the rights. So they’ve chosen to release them all at once rather than risk releasing them one or two at a time and winding up not being able to get them all out before the window of opportunity closes.
