Updated: Coming from Shout: Manos Re-release

Our pals at TVShowsonDVD have the news about an upcoming re-release of episode 424- “MANOS” THE HANDS OF FATE.

Previously released on DVD twice by Rhino (as a 2001 stand-alone disc, and in 2004 as part of “The Essentials” set) but long out-of-print, Shout! Factory has announced that they are bringing to participating stores this year a new 2-DVD release of “Mystery Science Theater 3000 – Manos: Hands Of Fate Special Edition.”

It will be available on Sept. 13 for a suggested price of $24.97.

Our sources at Shout have updated our info:
* Disc one will feature the classic MST3K episode, a featurette–“Group Therapy: Wherein Joel, Trace, Frank & Mary Jo relive the horror”–and the MST3K Hour wraps.
* Disc two will feature the original unMSTed movie, “Jam Handy To the Rescue!” A Daniel Griffith/Ballyhoo Production featurette (written by and starring Larry Blamire), BOTH parts of the short “Hired!” “My (Educational) Short Life,” an Interview with Joel Hodgson and–wait for it–“Hotel Torgo”. Also includes an exclusive mini-poster by artist Steve Vance.

Please use THIS LINK to preorder it from Amazon.

I’m none too happy to see yet another Manos re-release, but I don’t look at it as if this is squandering the chance of another MST3K episode from being released. Its clear that Rhino and then Shout decided the way to get the most money out of MST3K fans is to sell episodes bundled as volumes. Bad episodes just would not sell well on their own and they want to ensure the good episodes force fans to buy more expensive sets.

We’re not likely to see new episodes released individually again until either Shout screws up like Rhino did in volume 10 or until Shout can no longer easily acquire film rights to bundle them in packs of four.

There is one positive thing that Shout is not doing compared to Rhino. That is putting Shorts collections inside new volume sets instead of a new episode. When Rhino did that they did squander an opportunity to release new full eps.

Speaking of the Shorts collections, I wouldn’t mind seeing them bundled into one package (or getting re-released as singles). There’s four of them, right?

  3. Greetings, MSTies! I am happy to see that most of you are looking forward to this release. I think everyone is in for a surprise, especially concerning the JAM HANDY documentary! In response to some of the debates… (and this is NOT from Shout! Factory… only BALLYHOO and me) I don’t think there is any harm in offering the individuals who do not own the now out-of-print MANOS a chance to purchase it. I think Shout! Factory is just acting on behalf of those interested in acquiring MANOS without paying the excessive ‘collector’ price, or those fans who are interested in a updated edition with new, EXCLUSIVE extra’s. Keep in mind… Shout! Factory would have had to release this title before… to qualify as ‘double-dipping’. The new extra’s are there to enhance the release. As a documentary filmmaker in the bonus feature market… I can assure you that it is just as easy for a distribution company to release a title… minus the extra’s. The extra’s are just a show of appreciation to the fans of a film or television series. In the end, a consumer will either buy the title… or not buy the title. Most of the time, it doesn’t matter whether or not there is bonus materials. This fact saddens me, but it is proving to be the norm. But Shout! looks beyond that and tries to give the fans something more. As a film fan and consumer, I personally love seeing a competent ‘making-of’ featurette or interview regarding a movie I enjoy. And I cannot speak for other filmmakers or bonus feature producers, but I for one put a lot of passion and energy into the documentaries I create. I mainly do this for… well, YOU… the fans of this series. Why? Because I, too, am I fan of this series. And I KNOW that Shout! Factory is a fan of this series. We all do this because we love it. And there are some great things in store for you guys on the future releases! But that is all I can say right now. Hehe! :-)

Thanks Daniel! I have no problem laying down the cash for this release. Can’t wait to see the extras and see what ya’ll have in store for us in the future! I would like to see a dual Joel-Mike interview if that would ever be possible. we had the two Crows and Toms…I’d love to see the two hosts sit down together.

  6. No, thank you (ICED CHICKEN)! I would love to see that happen, too! I’m not sure if it would ever be possible, though. Mike seems to have little desire to participate in these MST3K retrospective documentaries or featurettes. Believe me, I have tried. But I will keep trying….
