Updated: Coming from Shout: Manos Re-release

Our pals at TVShowsonDVD have the news about an upcoming re-release of episode 424- “MANOS” THE HANDS OF FATE.

Previously released on DVD twice by Rhino (as a 2001 stand-alone disc, and in 2004 as part of “The Essentials” set) but long out-of-print, Shout! Factory has announced that they are bringing to participating stores this year a new 2-DVD release of “Mystery Science Theater 3000 – Manos: Hands Of Fate Special Edition.”

It will be available on Sept. 13 for a suggested price of $24.97.

Our sources at Shout have updated our info:
* Disc one will feature the classic MST3K episode, a featurette–“Group Therapy: Wherein Joel, Trace, Frank & Mary Jo relive the horror”–and the MST3K Hour wraps.
* Disc two will feature the original unMSTed movie, “Jam Handy To the Rescue!” A Daniel Griffith/Ballyhoo Production featurette (written by and starring Larry Blamire), BOTH parts of the short “Hired!” “My (Educational) Short Life,” an Interview with Joel Hodgson and–wait for it–“Hotel Torgo”. Also includes an exclusive mini-poster by artist Steve Vance.

Please use THIS LINK to preorder it from Amazon.

  9. Meh. Would need it on Blu-Ray to justify the double-dip for me. Could probably fit it all on one disk. C’mon Shout, do it!

not buying this, but glad it’s back in print. “special editions” of the more popular OOP episodes might be interesting – Santa Claus/Martians and Mitchell, maybe? I just want as many of the Rhino episodes as possible to be widely available through Shout (although I own most of the Rhinos, so I personally won’t need them.)

  12. Cronkite Moonshot says:

@ Finnias Jones #9… MST on Blu-ray would be totally pointless. The show was shot and edited on SD video tape (probably broadcast quality Beta) and so to put it simply, it will never exist in HD. Putting it on a Blu-ray would serve no real purpose.

Anyway this package sounds really cool, but is it going to only be available on the Shout website like the other rereleases, or will it also be a regular release and sold in stores? Also, though this sounds like a fun package for one of the best episodes, I REALLY hope they don’t start doing this too often with rereleases. I usually don’t like buying duplicate DVDs just for some new extras, so I don’t plan on doing it very often with MST episodes. The other individual rereleases were great because they made the episodes available to people without making those of us who already had them feel like we should have to buy them all over again for the new extras. I’m actually excited about getting this one, but please make these special edition style rereleases the rare exceptions rather than the new standard.

There really isn’t that much here to get me to re-purchase Manos. I would like the MST Hour clips, but I can wait for the price to drop.

  15. MikeK says:

@pablim The DVD is actually $17.49 at Amazon.com. Their pre-order prices are usually lower than the price after the DVD has been released.

Awesome! I can’t wait! Of course, I already own “The Essentials” but who can resist the heady, exhilarating thrill of extras? Who, I ask you, who?

PS- I’m gonna bet that this will be worth the price just for the awesome Shout! Factory animated menus!

Now,if only they re-release Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and Shorts volume 3 on one dvd with extras, then I won’t need The Essentials anymore… ;-)

None of you are looking at the important thing: MST HOUR SEGMENTS! The one’s no one’s seen since they last aired! Unlike the Gamera MST:H wraps, which were only half-lost, THESE haven’t seen the light of day for close to 15 years!

@TarlCabot Are you kidding? That’s what sealed the deal. Hell, if this was just a bare bones DVD I wouldn’t give it a second thought. :-)

Well, my point was that I’d buy this if it looked any better on an HDTV. I bet if they took the time, Shout could provide us with a better looking/sounding version of this episode than Rhino did. But there’s no mention of a remaster. The extras are enticing but are not enough for me. If they put it all on a single disk I might invest.

I would not call my request either “totally pointless” nor serving “no real purpose.” HD is the direction Shout should be pursuing, especially when reissuing digital goods we already own.

And all they need is two more miracles for sainthood. So here’s where we push for a Sandy Frank collection.

No, more important: A Roger Corman collection. Come on, Rog! You can do it!

  29. A definite maybe must-have. Certainly more enticing than Hamlet. Too bad they couldn’t get the Manos play on it. That would really complete it for me.

Like most, I have The Essentials DVD set, but the extras on this release are TOOO enticing to pass up. I love me some bonus features, and these sound good enough to warrant a double dip, although in general I am against the practice of double dipping.

    Dear SHOUT!,

    I love you. :inlove:

Absolutely. Unless they find a way to go to the original “Manos” film stock and integrate that hi-res images into the rest of the MST-3K content. I don’t even know if this is possible, or if anyone has thought of it. I’m sure it would be horribly time consuming and expensive, and the video effects and host segments would still look pretty grainy.

BTW I have heard of this “Manos” monstrosity for years and you bet I’ll get it when it comes out!

I’m torn on this. I already have the “Essentials” set. Why would I want to purchase the same episode again? I’m not sure I want to sit through the unMSTied version of “Manos.”

  33. I can’t believe I’m going to be buying Manos for a third time. On the other hand, this means I could probably sell my Rhino stand-alone copy. Or will the collector in me make me keep it, just to fill out the shelf? VERY excited about the MST Hour wraps.

I’ve been dreading this day but can’t say I’m all that suprised. Sooner or later Shout had to get greedy and do something that would get people to triple dip. Does this mean the sales figures on the bare bones re-issues haven’t been all that great? That wouldn’t suprise me either. Yes I want the MST Hour wraps. But I’d submit there is another way. Simply do a stand alone “extras” disc containing all Wraps of previously (Rhino) released titles. Then fill it out with an interview/documentary specifically on the wraps. That’s just one possibility. Creative minds can come up with others.

As for the un-MiSTied movie disc. I can honestly say I’ve never looked at any of the un-MiSTied movies on the handful of Rhinos that have them. Furthermore I recently caught Elvira’s broadcast of Manos. Her more traditional style of very minimal during movie riffs made that essentially unriffed. The movie was infinitly harder to take that way. Infinitely!

Please Shout. Don’t make this Special Edition repackaging the new re-release norm.

I know its a plot to have us buy it again for those of us who already own Manos as a single and/ or the essentials
Dont get me wrong, this is a great release because they are putting out a disc with some great supplements but the problem is a lot of us already own 2 copies of Manos…3 is overkill…
If they would port over the *Poopie* from the Rhino disc to the Shout Disc that would be great as I would then unload the Rhino DVD
Or if they release Santa Claus Conquers the Martians as a stand alone DVD I would dump the Essentials…

    RE: dsman71 (#43)

Throw in a documentary about the making of the original movie and it would go far beyond “cool” as we understand the term.

  45. TrumpyDumpy says:

No, dsman71, no it would not be cool. No one should EVER have that much Dropo in their DVD collection.

#41 — good point there, I see no mention of the “Poopie” compilation at all! That’s actually one of my favorite DVD extras and I’m a little surprised it’s apparently not reappearing — unless some sort of overall blooper comp is on the horizon…?

This is great. But I already have 2 Manos DVDs so I won’t be triple-dipping. But keep it up SHOUT!

Howabout some of the disks that have been recalled/ namely Wild Rebels from Rhino Collection 9? That would be sweet.

Whether I really want to or not, I’ve no doubt I’ll end up purchasing this one eventually……….Have to admit though, it will probably seem a bit surreal at that particular moment when I actually do, knowing full well I am forking over 25 of my hard-earned dollars for a copy of “Manos” !!!!

You DO have to wonder if the producers of this (estimated) $19,000 turkey, ever dreamed they’d still be making money off this “film” (nearly) 45 years after its original release………uh, they DO receive royalty payments for something like this, right ??? ?:-)

  49. Barth Gimble: The Shout singles are available on Amazon. Unfortunately. they aren’t any cheaper than on the Shout site. The problem with this kind of item is that most people who buy it have seen it and know what they’re getting, so they aren’t inclined to sell it so quick.

Personally, I never bought The Essentials, so I don’t need to agonize over a “triple-dip”.
