Reminder: “The Matrix” with RiffTrax Commentary at St. Louis Library

Reminder: A source at the University City Public Library, 6701 Delmar Blvd. in St Louis, tells us they will be showing the movie “THE MATRIX”—with the RiffTrax commentary—Friday, Oct. 24, at 6:30 PM. Our source says that the library can’t advertise it (the studio disapproves) but it’s definitely happening and is with the blessing of RiffTrax. Admission is free.

The part about the library not advertising the showing sounds accurate. At the library where I work, we got a MPLC license to show movies this past summer. However, part of the deal is that we could only name the movies via signs posted in the building. Any outside notices or publicity could only note that a movie was being shown.

Incidentally, I was disappointed to discover that the MPLC license only covered theatrical films, not TV episodes. Thus, no MST3K experiments.

This is great news. We have MST3K the movie at our Science Center (I think) on the last Friday of Sept. and then we have CT coming to town only about a week later. It’s a fun time to be in St. Louis.

I live in U City and the fliers at the library say that it’s free. It’s at 6:30 because the movie’s over 2 hours and the library closes at nine. Hope to see you there!

This sounds awesome, with the only possible problem being that some of the people in the audience might try and one-up Rifftrax. I would wonder if a librarian would really kick someone being loud and unruly out (especially if it’s a free show).

With Rifftrax specifically, I think it is better to watch by yourself or with one friend, mostly because again most people will know the movie that is being riffed on.

Still, I would love to be there. I need to give libraries in New Jersey this idea.

I will be there and will discourage any hecklers. Chances of any of the audience being funnier than Mike, etc, are very slim.
And yes, I do work there.

Nice! I will look for you when I’m there. I will be that guy dressed in clothes.

OK, so we are here all together as fans of ‘talking back to the movie’, and the thing that concerns us most is preventing people from… talking back to the movie. Interesting. Not sure where I stand on that.

You may need to have 2 screenings, one with and one without. I could see this schism being bigger than J. v. M.

    Who riffs the riffers ?

I’m not a medium, I’m a petite says: “Who riffs the riffers ?”

In my experience its usually unfunny knobs who think the epitome of humor is making a fart noise by blowing against their palms. The library should run one of those warning that comes on TV:
Warning: These riffs are done by professionals. Please do not try this at home.

    and again i say hmmmm…

First I would hope that the MST ‘family’ would attract a better quality indivdual. But keep in mind that the articial fart can be the right joke at the right time.

I wonder how the cow-town puppeteers would react to the idea that riffing should only be performed by licensed, board certified, riffing professionals. WE, the light-down-turning tape-circulating public, can’t be trusted to make our own jokes.

On the other hand, I guess I WOULD like to hear the jokes ( at least once ) and audience ad-libs could make that very difficult. I do see that side of it.

But having just written that, I feel uncomfortably like the friend I mentioned some time ago who complained bitterly about MST3K because the riffing and the shadowrama made it too hard for him to watch the movie.

I have to think about the social, artistic and heierchical ( authoritational ? ) implications.

    I just don’t know.

    RE: Post #11 from I’m not a medium, I’m a petite

I remember that during a cast Q&A during ConventioCon I, this question was asked. Frank answered that, in a public showing, you may think a movie is awful, but it’s bad form to talk back. Outside of your own home, it’s best to leave riffing to trained professionals.

That said, at the Gateway 2000 convention in St. Louis, there were showings of “Mitchell” and the first half of an alternate cut of “Riding with Death” where open riffing by the audience was encouraged. And, if I do say so myself, we gave a good account of ourselves.

Oh, and RE: Post #5 from Matt D, as someone who works for a library in NJ, I’d love to be able to show MST eps. It’d have to be worked out with BBI, though. Damnable rights issues!

Re #12, thx KeMo. Still not sure though.

Another thought for social interactive viewing…. being old enough to have thrown toast at the Rocky Horror Picture Show, and in light of the current Sing-a-long Sound of Music and Mama Mia, maybe we need Riff-a-long MST.

Everyone picks a character and dresses accordingly. Everyone learns their part, and they riff along, word for word with an MST ep.

75 people dressed in gold lame with upside down lacrosse masks on their heads stand up as one and shout ‘hey she stole Mike’s keyboard’.

    ( at least I THINK that’s a crow line ).
