Although he did mention that Martha Stewart show. Still, the guy seems to know his stuff.

Still, quite a few grammatical errors. Surprising in an otherwise intelligently-written piece.

Help me out, MSTies: I haven’t seen any of the CT episodes; are the skits really that “flat?” Or is it a question of “what’s funny to some…”?

    @ Auntie Maim:

Unfortunately, the reviewer here is right. They’re not awful by any means, and they certainly shouldn’t be a deal-breaker when buying episodes, but there’s only been one that I thought was even close to funny (Josh’s guitar smashing in Oozing Skull).

I personally think it’s because they’re using the silhouette for the skits. If they took the same skits and filmed them on another set where we could see their facial expressions and reactions to one another, they’d be a lot better. Right now, they’re coming off as sort of shallow. For the riffing, obviously the silhouette is fine. In that case, you don’t need to see someone’s face to get the joke. The sketches however, need more depth (Ha Ha get it? Cause they’re two dimensional shadows? I’ll stop now).

But what you should really do is buy some episodes and see for yourself. Jump on the bandwagon! Besides, Joel does a happy dance when you give him your money!

    QueenShad (#4): Very well put.

AuntieMa (#3): I’ve bought and watched all 3 CTs so far, and leaving aside all my other quibbles, yeah, the skits ( analogous to host segments on MST or ‘lunch break’ on Filmcrew ) are not good (IMHO). First, I don’t think they’re funny. Second I don’t think they are timed well with respect to the film… they wreck the rhythm. Maybe QueenShad’s suggestions would help, they certainly wouldn’t hurt. And she ( ? ) is is also right in that you’ll have to pony up and try it yourself. A lot of people do seem to like it.

H (#2). In the tiny univerrse of professional riffing, like it or not, Whatever Martha is biggish kind of news.

I agree with petite and shadowrama. The skits are uninspired, but I’ll give them 2 years to get comfortable with the new show(They really need a head writer ala’ Mike Nelson).

I think Incognito Cinema Warriors(icwxp.com)is on par or better at this point in CT’s life…..though after watching ‘Doomsday’ for the 6th time, I’m starting to enjoy it.

Thanks for your insight, Queen & Med/Pet. And for the record, I have been painfully resisting CT & RTx purchases due to major budget issues. These discussions and my old VHS tapes are all I can afford for now.

hmmm there must be a way to share the CT experience with people that understandably may not be able to justify plunking down increasingly rare dollars, in a way that respects the rights of the artist owned venture.

They don’t seem to be available at Netflix. There’s no such thing as video stores anymore are there ? Maybe we can have viewing parties, or lend the dvds ( WITHOUR COPYING OF COURSE ).

Wow! I cannot relate to any of you! In my book CT is as good as and in many instances better than MST (yes, I said better), and you couldn’t make me buy another RT. Seriously, just no. ICW? Passpasspass. I’m a huge fan of the CC years, and the Gamera eps land near the very top of my list. That, along with the review and comments here demonstrates once again that there’s no accounting for taste, I suppose.

so, joel doesn’t have the rights to his own show? I guess i knew that or shoulda known, but is there no chance of him getting them back or even wanting them back for that matter?
CT seems like a thinly veiled desire to get back to the MST3k and i for one would love to see it make a comeback. It could be done.

MST3K – the Lost Episodes! No explanation neccessary. They could all look older, and none of the shows have to fit into context with the old ones. Just bring ’em back!!

As to this review, at least the guy didn’t call them talentless leeches.

I’ve only seen Doomsday Machine and I thought that was cute, and funny. Not hilarious, but give them time to get their groove back.

    I’m sure I’ll buy more.

    Petite:
Yes, I hope that Joel eventually manages to get a better distribution deal for his DVD project. It’s harder to get new people into it when you can’t rent them or catch them on TV. I like the idea of viewing parties and lending DVDs. If fans like to watch them with a friend, maybe they could split the cost of the disc/download.

    Teenage Cavegirl:
“…you couldn’t make me buy another RT. Seriously, just no.”
Really? To each their own, but I’m a bit curious to know the story behind that reaction. It couldn’t be the price or lack of variety. Sync trouble? Movies are too “good”? A general dislike of the Mike/Kevin/Bill combo?
I figured even the more hardened critics of Rifftrax would like the shorts.

EtherMEorYou: When Joel left the show, he basically made a deal with Jim Mallon so Jim can have control over MST3K so long as Joel continues to get money from it. Considering the kind of deals most people get in the industry, he could have done worse. A lot of people don’t have the rights to their own shows.

I think both the Brains and the fans want MST3K to “come back” to some extent or another, but the many realities of life have a habit of spoiling everybody’s fun. For one thing, nobody seems to agree on how it should be done. Something which ultimately resulted in the new riffing projects. Everyone is “back” for all intents and purposes, they’re all just back on their own terms.

true, true. They are back in a way and i understand change and wanting to different things, but it just seems like if ole joel baby wanted to return to riffing, he would do it with his baby. I know Mallon wants to make money. Hell, everyone wants to make money.
But, I guess i’m wrong. Even though, i still fully support these guys with whatever they do; they are free to exercise their creative right anyway they see fit. And if Joel & co/ Mike and Co feel these endeavors are better for them and for everyone, then rock on.
I miss those damn robots tho.

#13 – Just not my sensibility, I suppose. Too snarky for me and not enough fun/ny. I’m not a fan of the movie choices either, although I could deal if I laughed more. I didn’t feel like it was a good time when I finished any of them, like I do with MST or CT. Just felt rather negative. Again, no accounting for taste.

  16. FordPrefect says:

#15 – Too snarky eh? I don’t think the vibe is that different from the later episodes of MST or Film Crew that the guys worked on.

For me, the only real difference between Rifftrax and the other projects is that I could actually stand to watch some of the films without the riffers. Of course, that just gives me more reason to get the movie. I actually really liked a couple of the film choices before the traxs came out, but I don’t take it personally. They must like the films a little bit, otherwise they couldn’t stand to watch them more than once. Nobody’s forcing them, fictional or otherwise.

Which ones did you watch? You sound more like you’d be into the video on demand shorts more so than some of the blockbusters. Plus, there’s “Rifftrax Presents” which is Mike-free, assuming Mike is the source of the snarkiness. (That’s a fun word to say, I should use it more often.) Have you tried those, or are those the ones you didn’t like?

 Like many of you,I do miss the robots as well, but it would be kind of weird/strange if they tried to and plus,a lot of fans would think that Joel and the rest are just trying to recreate the magic that was MST3K.I think some of the riffing isn’t as quick or as funny as Rifftrax or MST3K,but at least the most of the old gang is back doing what they do best and I’d rather have that than nothing! As far as the skits,I don’t think they’re really necessary to begin with because it does cut the rhythm of the movie, but maybe if they sat around or took a nap(loud snoring, perhaps?)before the movie came back on or that would be any better??? I think they should pick really bad movies they originally passed on when they were doing MST3K.Maybe do a short like they used to????
