Two More Re-Releases from Shout! Factory

The latest news from Shout! Factory…

SHOUT! FACTORY AND BEST BRAINS, INC., PRESENT….
MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000:
THE WILD WORLD OF BAT WOMAN
&
MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000:
GIRL IN GOLD BOOTS
AVAILABLE DIRECTLY FROM SHOUT! FACTORY ON MARCH 20, 2012
On March 20th The Satellite of Love lifts off once again when Shout! Factory and Best Brains, Inc. release Mystery Science Theater 3000: Girl In Gold Boots and Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Wild World Of Batwoman on DVD, available exclusively from the Shout! Factory store here and here.

MST3K: Girl In Gold Boots and MST3K: The Wild World Of Batwoman are the newest titles in a special line from Shout! Factory of single episode/single disc releases of fan favorites. Shout! Factory also continues to release new multi-disc collections of beloved and in-demand episodes. Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXIII, a 4-Disc collection of 4 previously unreleased episodes and loads of extras, will be in stores March 27th.

In MST3K: Girl In Gold Boots, a timeless tale of exploitation, competition, drugs and raw talent-flavored substitute, a young woman’s quest to make it as a professional go-go dancer reveals a devastatingly mediocre portrait of Hollywood’s low-budget underbelly. Thankfully, those schlock ’n’ roll stars aboard the Satellite of Love are here to avenge our boredom and riff our pain away. Comedy snipers Mike Nelson and his robot sidekicks Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot put Girl In Gold Boots in their crosshairs and take it down. May a statue be dedicated one day to their heroism!

In 1966 an understandable attempt to capitalize on the popularity of Batman went horribly, horribly, horribly wrong. The movie that emerged, The Wild World Of Bat Woman, would have stood a better chance had it been written by Bob Kane’s dog. There is a plot, of sorts, involving a masked babe, her team of dancing girls, a mad scientist, an atomic-powered hearing aid and an archvillain named Rat Fink. Don’t try to connect those dots. You’ll lose. Just enjoy the ample opportunities taken by Mike and his robot pals Tom Servo and Crow T. Robot to redeem the movie with barbs, cracks, digs, jabs and other assorted comic punishment. MST3K: The Wild World Of Batwoman includes the short film Cheating, a morality tale about a high school boy whose position in student government is jeopardized by a cheating scandal.

Excellent. I hope they keep these coming. Horrors of Spider Island and Phantom Planet (both public domain, if I’m not mistaken) would make great candidates for the next re-releases.

  4. Well, considering MST3K introduced me to Girl in Gold Boots which has become my favorite B-Movie of all time, I will have to purchase this re-release, even though I already own the set it came in previously.

It’s irrational, I know, but I just can’t help myself. I have an addiction to this film.

Wild World of Batwoman back on DVD?

Yes! Hopefully Mitchell and Brain that Wouldn’t Die aren’t far behind… :-)

  6. Smirkboy says:

Maybe I’m selfish but there could be just a small amount of extras.

  7. Kevin says:

One line from the “Batwoman” MST episode always stuck in my mind…”Gentlemen, we’re in the middle of a K.D. Lang fantasy” ;)

  8. Oblivion138 says:

For me, the standout line in Wild, Wild World of Batwoman will always be, “You know, that may not REALLY be Chinese.” Without a doubt, one of the WEIRDEST movies MST3K ever got their mitts on.

Won’t be picking these up, as I’ve already got the Rhino releases…but the re-release of Girl in Gold Boots alerted me to the fact that Volume 4 is now OOP. I wonder how long it will be before Shout re-issues Space Mutiny, and if they will include any extras for that fan-favorite episode, as they did for their Special Edition release of Manos.

Cool. I’ll pick up Girl in Gold Boots since Vol 4 is OOP and it’s the only one I don’t have. I’d like to get it for the sake of completeness, but it’s too pricey. Hopefully they release the other vol 4 eps individually.

WWoBW I already have, so I’ll pass on it. Random line I really liked that comes to mind: ‘This was Ingmar Bergman’s first American film’ during the Cheating short when the kid sits in the dark room and the clock ticks back and forth.

LOVE “Girl in Gold Boots”, one of my faves in fact, but WWoBW is really painful. A few great lines but I feel like there are some slow patches. Strange since this seems like it would be perfect for riffing…
Anyway, thank you Shout! Keep ’em comin!

I already have WWoBW so I’ll just get the other one. Looks like I won’t have every Shout release MST DVD now.

They’d sell more of these if they sold them in regular stores.

I already have these, but I’d buy them again if they had cool extras. Both of these are awesome/terrible films.

Still hoping for a Merlin’s Shop DVD with a good transfer – the Rhino one was SO DARK. And I’d love “special editions” of Mitchell and Space Mutiny. Glad that these are staying in print.

  17. Lisa says:

Is it something to do with rights negotiation (ever a bugaboo, that) that causes them to release some as singles and others in the collections? Or what is it?

  18. Jason says:

I think the general rule of thumb is that re-releases don’t get included in the volumes, which are for never-before-on-DVD episodes only. This has been the practice so far, and the Shout! Select titles have exclusively been the low-hanging fruit (mostly public domain titles, I assume) of the out of print Rhino releases. If you want to know what titles are likely to get re-released under the Select label next, look at the Rhino episodes Shout! is offering digitally on places like Amazon.com and Netflix.

This theory makes episodes like Space Mutiny, Time Chasers, Overdrawn at the Memory Bank and Merlin’s Shop less likely than others, but I remain hopeful nonetheless.

^^ I’d love whole new sets with all of the above in them. Some of those are too dark in Rhinos.

Oh, I asked this before but I don’t think I got an answer, should Shout! Beginning of the End have video problems? It sort of flutters at times.. :(

Batwoman? Yay! I can finally get it on DVD now. My tape is in horrible condition.

  22. I know the old Rhino release used the same title, but doesn’t the version used in the episode actually read “The Wild Wild World of Batwoman“? (Emphasis mine.)

Yes, thank you, I’m anal about these things…

How is “Wild World of Batwoman” a “fan favorite” ????

Don’t get me wrong. I hope SHOUT! releases every episode they can.
But this is the only experiment I could never make it through, of the lot. I even sent the RHINO VHS back I thought it was so bad.
Even Red Zone Cuba was more enjoyable than this bomb.
I felt so sorry for Mike and the bots. They tried. They really really tried.

Oh well, at least I have my Gold Boots on.

@23 – How is “Wild World of Batwoman” a “fan favorite” ????
In absolutely the best way possible. :D

Last half of Season 5, when even having Mike as host didn’t mean they didn’t have a few weird-@$$ fever-dream Joel-era movies left over to knock him out of his smugness.
Misogynist “Gold Boots” jokes for go-go girls are easy; watching those same girls chase multiple Ratfinks around the table to twangy guitar music, not so much. (“Maybe they’ll all turn into butter.”)

@24 Why would you not want people to be able to buy a physical copy?

Not everybody has a high speed internet connection you know! ;)
