Hello, world!

As renewed interest in MST3K has grown over the past couple of years–and then increased exponentially in the last couple of weeks–we’ve heard from a few fans who’ve said various things to the effect of: “Dudes, your site is a Web 1.0 relic.”

To which we’ve always responded with a hearty: “Um, well, yeah.” See, that was sorta the point. When we were the official site of the show, we never really felt any pressure to upgrade, because we felt a low-tech site reflected the low-tech feel of the show.

And, let’s face it, for a few years there we were pretty much a museum to a long-cancelled show whose fans were draining away to zero. We didn’t really mind it…it was quiet and peaceful and Fred the nightwatchman used to tell such funny stories…but I digress. The point is that when you run a dusty museum, there’s not much pressure to be up-to-date.

Plus, we both have full-time jobs and re-doing a site takes time, dude.

Well, now there’s no longer any impetus to reflect the show so literally. And with all the new sources of MST3K-alumni funny coming our way, Erhardt and I quickly realized that we were going to need a news page that was going to allow us to respond more deftly, if we’re going to remain your No. 1 source for MST3K-related news. And we are, don’t worry.

So, with that, welcome to the new Satellite News news blog. RSS feed ‘n’ evrathang. The rest of the site is pretty much the same old stuff right now, but improvements are planned. As always, stay tuned.

Big ol’ kudos to Erhardt, who labored long and hard to bring this forth.

Oh, and we have turned comments on, for now. If people behave themselves, it’ll stay turned on, so play nice. :-)

You’re probably sick of hearing it by now, but the new home page looks great and the RSS feed is terrific. Keep up the good work!

Echoing others – your site is the first thing I look at every morning, and often again at night. I like the new look! Thanks for all of the hard work yinz have put in over the years. I guess I’m behind the times with RSS – I’m off to find out what it is and why it did not change my life before today.

Well, so it changed. Neither good nor bad, but Erhardt — I think he tampered in God’s domain.

Aw man, i’m going to miss the old site. It was the same for as long as I can remember and while the re-design is oh-so-nice, i’m going to miss the old school feel of it. It was comfy.

Man, this whole blog thing is crazy looking after such a long acquaintance with the old site. I have nothing to say except thanks for running this place–it’s appreciated.

Thanks everyone for all the kind words about the new look of the site. As Sampo hinted at in his post, the idea was to convert our old news pages into a blog where we could offer an RSS feed and other Web 2.0-y type goodies. And that’s been done. All seven pages of our old news content have been converted to the blog format. The intent was never to redesign the entire site, at least not initially. Hence the Legacy Pages remain.

While the response has been overwhelmingly positive, there has been some small criticism of the busy-ness of the left side of the page. I agree. But my goal was to retain as much of the old formatting as possible, at least at first. I for one get irritated when a site I regularly visit suddenly changes its entire format overnight. It’s irksome. But moving forward, we’ll be looking for ways to slowly make the site a bit more streamlined.

Oh, and Mike. If you do a WHOIS search, I believe you’ll find that this is MY domain. And I protect those who come here. For I am…

    TARZAN, LORD OF THE JUNGLE!

    Or something.

I can’t find a thing in this place since you’ve changed everything!

  9. OH MY GOD. You’ve finally got an RSS feed! You have no idea how long I’ve been waiting for Satellite News to get an RSS feed. Yeah yeah fancy new WordPress-powered site blah blah clean updated interface that’s great and all, but the RSS feed makes me happier than you could possibly imagine. Thank you, Satellite News, for enabling my laziness by making me click my mouse button ever so slightly less on a daily basis. God bless.

    WordPress, huh?

The only problem is that now your websire looks like thousands of other WordPress websites that use the exact same template as the one you’re using.

Not very creative is it? …for such a creative show.
