I dunno about this, Rifftrax has the constant ability of taking movies I really like and making them look bad.

Except Casino Royale. Nothing can bring that movie down.

Oh geez, I can already see this is going to generate a LOT of whining. Let me try to diffuse this as quickly as possible:

RiffTrax is not MST3K. Just because they riff on a movie does not mean anyone actually thinks it’s a bad movie. Iron Man is a big boy, he can handle a little riffing, he doesn’t need you to hold his hand. Iron Man will still be a great movie when the riffing is done. And if you still don’t like it, that’s fine! No one is making you watch the RiffTrax! You are still free to continue enjoying your favorite movies riff-free if you so desire, the RiffGoons are not gonna to come to your house and break your kneecaps, honest.

    Okay? Okay.

@Thunder Dan: Sorry, that comment wasn’t really aimed at you, that was just a preemptive measure. Maybe I jumped the gun and there is NOT going to be a stream of whining about how RiffTrax-sucks-how-dare-they-do-movies-I-like, and if so I happily rescind my previous comment.

I don’t think it’s a case of riffing a good movie, more along the lines of riffing a new movie. I’m surprised that a lot of 80s movies have been ignored. Commando? Any of the Rambo movies? Lethal Weapon? Heck just about any 80s action movie is prime for a riffing.

I won’t be ordering this one, since the movie pretty much riffed itself, but I do think the best riffs are aimed at movies that are very serious like Memento, or Road House or Day After Tomorrow. Movies like this one, and Ocean’s 11… riffing those movies are almost a waste of time.

    Just my opinion.

Again, Rifftrax is free to do what ever they want, within the bounds of the law, unencumbered by matters such as taste or talent ( sorry, that last bit was gratuitous ).

But we are free not to appreciate and not to buy. They are big boys too, and how they feel about turning off a significant portion of their potential fan base is THEIR business. It may be BAD business too, but it’s THEIR business none-the-less.

sigh, I find these discussions tiresome, I really should just keep my mouth shut.

  19. Bat Masterson says:

Rifftrax isn’t there to rip movies to shreds. It’s simply to make jokes that have the movie as a source of inspiration.

Yes, it’s their business how they feel about turning off a significant portion of their fan base. However, I would imagine they don’t feel anything about it, since it hasn’t actually happened.

Awesome. When I was watching Incredulous Bulk recently, i thought it would make a great one. Ironed Man i didn’t see coming but is very welcomed. (So is Babywrong AD and Death Brace 2000) My favorite Rifftrax fall into three categories: The solo Mike ones, usually 80’s cheese. The Mike ones where he’s with Mary Jo or Bridget. And then the genre movies I actually don’t mind watching again. Like LOTR, Memento, Harry Pooper to some extent… Star Wars I wish they hadn’t went so hateful with a lot of it. It just becomes unfunny and the writing just seems lazy to me in those instances. I don’t mind what kind of movies they do and I’m even for them going for the Godfather type, like Mike always brings up. As long as it is funny and they keep it a variety. :)

Also, Connor… Pass on how they need to bring in the other/remaining Brains (Paul, dammit!) more often. Watching Rifftrax (and CinTit as well) reminds us how important the non on-screen riffers were to MST’s writing. MJ, Frank and Bridget kill.

Oh I almost forgot about Journey to the Center of the Earth. The movie doesn’t take itself TOO seriously and even tries to be comical at times. However the goofy moments and ridiculous science stuff runs one after another in this movie. It could make for a very fun Rifftrax I think.

  25. FordPrefect says:

Honestly I would have been surprised if they hadn’t riffed this movie since a) they love riffing Marvel Comic Book movies and b) they sell fairly well. I enjoyed the film when I saw it in the theater, but it’s certainly not above riffing.

    @I’m not a medium, I’m a petite:
Concerning the whole “Bring Back The Film Crew” thing, I believe that it’s more likely to happen than an MST3K reunion. However, let’s think about this. Mike, Kevin, and Bill recorded those episodes before Rifftrax took off, three years ago. They sold very well for Shout Factory, but I doubt they made enough money to make the guys seriously consider abandoning Rifftrax in favor of continuing Film Crew.

That leaves us with the option of them working on Film Crew as a side project while they still keep tabs on Rifftrax. They actually seem to be making some headway in that by bringing in new talent. Giving customers more options helps the site grow.

Customer actions speak louder than words, so here’s my thoughts on what to do if you want more Film Crew:

#1: Buy all the Film Crew DVDs. Get your friends to buy em. Watch em on Hulu. You’ve probably already done this, so let’s move on.

#2: Buy all the Rifftrax Shorts. Remind the guys how much you love to see them riff on old public domain stuff. While you’re at it, get “Missile to the Moon”. It’s one of the most Film Crew-esqe movie choices they’ve offered, and yet it’s one of the lowest selling titles. That doesn’t send a good message to the bean counters.

#3: Buy the Rifftrax Presents titles. Particularly the ones that don’t have Kevin and Bill on them. Why, you ask? Because I don’t think you’ll be able to have it both ways. If Rifftrax can survive a couple months without Mike/Kevin/Bill’s direct involvement in the recording of new content, that leaves them more time to work on other projects…like Film Crew. However, as long as Rifftrax needs them to keep recording new stuff to keep sales going, they’ll probably be too busy. Give the new people a shot.

Nope, not getting a treatment of Iron Man. I do like this movie too much to want to see it ravaged. But again, they are free to do any movie they want, and I bet they will do a fine job. But like Memento, this one is not for me.

but doesn’t that ruin the entire purpose of the internet? that is, to complain to people we’ll otherwise never have any other contact with ever again?

    Here’s my philosophy.

If it’s a bad movie, then it deserves being mocked.

If it’s a good movie, it’s an HONOR.

#25 FordPrefect. I’ll pass thank you. If they want ME to buy something ( and they well may NOT ) then they have to make something that I want to buy. The idea that I would subsidize them on the off chance that they might create something I want to see is just beyond my grasp. Besides, I do enough of that already with CT ( and that hasn’t worked yet either ).

I love Mike and Joel, but come on, if they can’t make a living off of riffing ( and I have no desire for them to fail ) then they need to suck it up and get real jobs like the rest of us.

Imagine Joel and Mike in their jumpsuits as greeters at the hot new theme restaurant MST3Kafe. Not something I relish, but karma’s a b****, as is payback for roasting Alan Hale Jr.

Please speak you order into Gypsy’s mouth, pay at the hexfield, and drive up to the umbilicus to collect your order. Try the Big G Burger.

Shudder. I wan’t be able to sleep tonight.

What the heck was I talking about… oh yeah, no thanks I won’t buy rifftrax, and I may stop buying CT if it doesn’t improve, no matter what it means to Joel and Mike and the Nots.

and now I’ll shut up, thank you :)

My guess is they won’t do The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger’s death might cut into some of the riffs they could do.

#33: majorjoe23. Interesting… Assuming you are right, would you agree or disagree ?

I mean, Do you yourself feel that Heath Ledger SHOULD be out of bounds , or are you just thinking that the producers will be sqeemish ?

just curious, no moral censure implied.

    yet ;)
