For Our Region 2/PAL Readers: The Movie on DVD & Blu-Ray

We knew this was coming out, but since it was Region 2/PAL (in other words, not playable on most American players) we didn’t give it much thought. But we do have some readers across the pond, so, you can get it here and here.

I read a real review of it somewhere, but I can’t find it at the moment… I will update when I do.

Luke Owen of flickeringmyth.com reviews it. So does DVDActive.com.

Technically, we could import the Blu-ray, since that doesn’t have the region restrictions. In the meantime, my jealousy burns on.

Wow, is this the first MST product on Blu Ray?

Will this be something we can get down the road? I have it on VHS and I wanted to get it on DVD, but I’ll wait for the BLU-RAY. Does it have cool special features?

There are players that support all regions even on blu-ray. Just ask any fan of “Sherlock” who bought the second season UK DVD back in January to avoid having to wait until May to see it on PBS.

There are even blu-ray drives for computers that can be reset to a different region (one time only but still…).

Was this the review you were talking about, Sampo?

At least there are bonus features…a making of, the trailer and stills.

I haven’t heard about region restrictions on this disc & have been trying to get a confirmation: Is it, in fact, Region 2 locked? I’ve been able to import one or two Blu-Ray discs from Europe & play them on my Region 1 player & have my fingers crossed that this is one of those…

Also: “Boo!” for once again not including the cut host segments as a bonus feature!

Kathy. I didn’t know Sherlock here was so far behind, just watched the last of series 2 on the DVR last night. Thanks for the tip, I just ordered the series 1 and 2 blu ray combo pack from amazon UK for almost half of what amazon USA is charging. The Sherlock set is region free too, I couldn’t find out if the MST3K movie was or not.

Here’s another review that has a few screencaps so you can get an idea of the picture quality.

Cheapskate Crow – Yeah…”Scandal in Belgravia” was shown in the UK on New Year’s Day and then the others over the next two weeks.

Made it difficult to discuss the new season on sites like Sherlockology without spoiling things for those who hadn’t seen it. :-)

Wow, #7 – those screenshots are really impressive.

That’s got to be the best MST3k’s ever looked. I, too, hope this bad boy isn’t region locked, because wow.

Wow, thanks. So much for the continent of Europe.

Ugh, why does Europe get bonus features for The Movie, and US gets zip?

HA ! Emailed this to you a while back. Please don’t ignore us just because we live outside the US, we love the show as much as you.

My DVD is on the way, perhaps it is waiting for me at home.

From the pictures the image quality on the blu-ray isn’t a crisp 1080p image, but its an upgrade from the DVD. Already ordered it and hope it to get it in soon.

Shame about the lack of extras. All we want are the deleted scenes.

So I “obtained” a copy of the transfer (Disclaimer: I know torrenting is discouraged around these here parts, but I’ve owned the VHS & both versions of the DVD & plan to purchase the Blu-Ray the day it’s released in the US or this version if I find out it’s compatible with my Region 1 set) & checked it out last night. I can say that it looks & sounds about what you would have gotten from seeing a print of it in the theater.

You can see some of the finer details on the bots (and, yes, lots & lots of puppet-wire) & REALLY get a closer look at the SOL set (I checked it out on a 1080p projector & ended up pausing it frequently to really examine the fine work they did on it). The movie segments are also surprisingly good-looking – the silhouettes are crisp & it’s kind of a joy to see the film grain & elements of wear on the print of “This Island Earth” that they used. The audio is lossless 5.1 – I mean, yeah, this is MST3K we’re talking about, so most people won’t care about audio as long as it’s not completely garbled (though, if you don’t care you probably wouldn’t be checking out an article about the Blu-Ray in the first place) but there is a noticeable difference in the audio quality here vs. the DVD of the movie or an episode of the series.

In conclusion: if you can play Region 2 Blu-Rays or if this ends up being Region 1 compatible, I’d recommend adding it to your collection. It’s the absolute best MST3K is ever going to look & sound.

For future information, been double checking things and…

    – Blu-ray is not encoded with country codes – PAL, NSTC, etc. The only thing that restricts discs from being played in every country is if it’s Region locked. Standard DVDs you need a player that will deal with both county codes – Cody sells a model that does that for about $30.

    – However, some region-free discs still have to be used on a player that’s compatible with 50HZ. Not all but some. Check your player.

    – US Sony blu-ray and PS3’s can’t handle region-free discs.

  17. Kathy says:

@Bill Haverchuck – don’t you love the assumption that ALL people who want to get a copy of something online NEVER buy anything or go to the movie theater to see it later? :-)

The biggest pirates of VHS copies of “Star Wars” that I knew back in the day were the first ones who were pre-ordering “rental only” copies at $250.00 plus when Lucas finally gave in.

The extras on the DVD are disappoiting. A rubbish stills gallery. A very grainy trailer. A 5 minute making of documentary which includes most of the trailer. Haven’t compared the movie quality with my DVD-R copy of the US DVD but it does look fantastic and maybe there will be a few more Msties here now.

Maybe the copyright is different in Europe and we could get the Godzilla episodes !!

Goke, I am so disappointed in u.I expect you to talk like a well brought up child. Prof has every reason to be sentimental, just like I am.UNILAG should not be used as a tool to score cheap political points. Jonathan is being hypocritical. He knows he’s fast becoming unpopular and he’s trying to gain the support of the south-west.Abiola should be seen as a national hero and not a regional one as Obafemi Awolowo. Jonathan should be bold enough to re name a national monument in Abuja after Abiola. Afterall, he was incarcerated and later killed in Abuja.
