Weekend Discussion Thread: Gritty Reboots of MSTed Movies

Cresilda & Thomas suggested:

With gritty reboots all the rage with the kids today, what do you think a dark re-imagining of MST3K might be like? “Why so serious, Frank?”

And to throw it wide open, instead of MST3K you can pick any MSTed movie and come up with a reboot for that.

Have at it!

I find this topic in general to be too gritty and dark, much too icky.

But a “remake” is easy. Just run Sidehackers uncut and see what really
ticked off that magnificent bastard Rommel.

And lay off Lt. Lamont! You think it’s easy being dead and still having to go to work? Hey, wait a minute. She could be a zombie. Now about that gritty remake…

I’d love to see some sort of “Hangar 18,” reboot, with Gary Sinise as Steve Bancroft, Bill Pullman as Gordon Cain and William Shatner as Harry Forbes + Leonard Nimoy as Professor Mills. Also, add Rainn Wilson as some sort of ham radio operator/computer geek/conspiracy nut who apparently hears everything. Set the movie back in the early-80’s at the start of the Space Shuttle program (similar to the original). Perhaps add Steve Buscemi as the beheaded astronaut, maybe even an all-star cast similar to 70’s films. Also, keep the aliens looking like Tor Johnson or Curly Howard!! Also with the 80’s set up, find a clip of “The Mike Douglas Show,” similar to the pre-movie segment of “Cave Dwellers,” that Dr Clayton Forrester and TV’s Frank were reenacting!!!

Soultaker can get a gritty reboot methinks. Make the soul stealing more graphic and less “ghostbustery”, painful even. Bring back Robert Z’Dar and Joe Estevez for a cameo. But play more with the soultaker’s powers, like a Freddy Krueger with a code of conduct. Have Christopher Walken as an elder soultaker in there somewhere. This is a film that screams for a darker twist and turn approach.

    Keep the summerfest though.

    Weekend theme idea?

From a posting I made above alluding to Lt. Lamont of Time Chasers, how about revising an MST3000 movie to make it zombie themed? It could feature old style (slow/dumb) zombies or new quick zombies. For example, Catalina Caper could feature zombie bikini clad women (infected by Creepy Girl, natch) chasing Lyle Wagoner and friends. When the girls start getting slaughtered by the bad guys zombie Little Richard and zomby insurance investigator come to their rescue.

  5. I don’t think the idea of MST3K could work with gritty modern reboots. It’s about a scientist who makes a hostage watch bad movies in hopes of brain washing him. Will it be like that scene from A CLOCKWORK ORANGE?

    but…

Some movies featured on the show could be remade. ROBOT HOLOCAUST, UNTAMED YOUTH, BLOODLUST, among others.

Anyone else think Corman’s THE UNDEAD could be remade LORD OF THE RINGS style? The hero could be Quintus Ratcliff, since he’s from the future. Or at least a sequel to it.

Supernatural MANOS remake, but make the Master a priest, and Torgo as a demon in human form.

LASERBLAST remake with a superhero twist. Make Billy a hero fighting evil aliens. The original’s anti-bully feel seems kind of off anyway. Why does Billy get harassed so much? In any modern movie he’d be king of high school.

“The Dead Talk Back” as a horror movie

Dr. Krasker is eager to assist the local police in the investigation of the murder of his housemate. He’s always had delusions of grandeur about his ability to talk to the dead; really any results he has had with his homemade gadgets were a figment of his imagination. Things have only gotten worse since he quit taking his meds…

The police and the housemates and suspects gather in Krasker’s lab. Krasker begins his demonstration. Every one scoffs. Until! The dead actually *do* talk back. And it’s not just *Renee’s* voice they hear…

Thus begins the most terrifying night of their lives.

MST3K will eventually get a reboot, but I suspect most of us won’t be around to see it.

As far as “gritty reboots” of MST-ed movies go, “Moon Zero Two.” Just decide on a story and it could be a big hit!

Surprise no one’s suggested Girl in Gold Boots. Make it Showgirls but actually, you know, good.

@11 I doubt it’d have been dark and gritty, but we came close to getting a SCCTM remake by Tick creator Ben Edlund (though as Supernatural shows he can do dark and gritty).

@17 Since it’s Burton it’d be Helena Bonham Carter as Carol.

How about Denzel Washington as Ross Edwards in “San Francisco International”? Except this time Ross is drunk and crashes the plane with the mushy nose wheel.

A reboot of Pumaman would be good. This time Pumaman is even more lame and a load than before, with Vadinho doing even more of the work. Pumaman dies in the end doing something heroic. Haven’t decided if he fails at that or not.

    Manos into Darkness.

    Chris Pine IS Mike!
    Zachary Quinto IS Mike’s Wife!
That Guy Who Plays Young Chekhov IS Debbie!
    Benedict Cumberbund IS The Master!
    AND
A needlessly expensive CGI creation IS Torgo!

One final thought on the potential Rocky Jones reboot. As with the Battlestar Galactica reboot, the characters’ somewhat odd names would be their call signs. Anyone want to take a guess as to what Winky’s real name would be?

@ #61: Actually, I think the Master’s dog would be the needlessly expensive CGI creation.
