Farewell to a great actor. I saw him first in Disney’s “The Black Hole”, and also in the 1968 TV production of “Heidi”.

The MST3K episode he’s in may not be the most universally adored, but I sure as hell enjoy it. RIP.

Dare I say… Goodnight, sweet prince. And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest. But they’re Northwest flights of angels, so they’ll be late.

    A genuinely talented actor!

I dunno how many of you have seen “Cross of Iron”, but it’s quite a film.

I actually love the Hamlet episode and Max was one of the reasons; so cute and intense. I recently watched his acceptance of his Oscar on YouTube and some of his scenes from Judgement at Nuremberg. A good actor and easy on the eyes.

“I shall never look upon his like again…”
Why were you looking at his like!?

mst3000 Hamlet might have been better uncut and in German.

Max was a consummate actor (not unlike Peter O’Toole).
A supporting role of Max’s I liked was as Larry london
    in the Freshman.

  9. A little off topic, but John Cacavas, who composed the scores for Hanger 18, Superdome, and SST: Death Flight, passed away on January 28. [EDIT: I think he may have also scored San Francisco International, but I can’t recall for sure.]

Btw, some losses in the Oscar obit bit this year: Peter O’Toole, Maximilian Schell,
Jean Stapleton, Esther Williams, James Gandolfino, Roger Ebert…

  13. Sampo – thanks for the correction. Patrick Williams (alive and well) scored SF International.

RIP Maximilian. You were magnificent in Judgement at Nuremburg. Another of my favorite performances of his was as Eduard Roschmann in The Odessa Files.

Maximilian Schell was a great actor, and his Hamlet is truly one of the Hamlets out there. Finding that version of Hamlet in its original, uncut form was nearly impossible for me – I did manage to find a copy of it eventually on film through eBay a few years ago and have been saving up to get it transferred onto a disk).

Loved him in Black Hole, he made the movie with his performance. Much like David Warner did in TRON.

Thank you, everyone, for not making this another Hamlet hatefest. R.I.P. Max, one of the good ones. I adore MST3K episode 1009.

R.I.P., and may flights of like-named red robot angels take you through the Black Hole…
Count me in as one who very much enjoyed Ep 1009, mostly for Maximilian.

Very sad to see Max go. Episode 1009,and Hamlet in general touch my soul. Hamlet is the finest play ever written. Contains everything that makes life painful. Lust, love, hate, death, betrayal, incest and ear poison. I have seen a number of Hamlet films, and, live plays and find the MST treatment a riot, and, exciting. Max is a strong lead, and, along with a ravishing Ophelia (so much like my GF, perhaps why this Opheila is so enticing.) I watch 1009 to feel young. For some reason, it makes me that way. More than Godzilla or Teenage Caveman type films. Losing Max makes me feel a bit older. Selfish, perhaps, but, still a feeling. RIP Max. I wish I had your action figure.

Agree about Max in The Odessa Files. He was great as
an unapologetic concentration camp commandant in the final
confrontation, esp. when he (and the audience) realize why
Jon Voight has been so obsessed about him.
