Weekend Discussion Thread: Let’s Talk Godzilla

Alert faithful reader Sue chimes in with:

With the new Godzilla movie coming out in theaters and also with Rifftrax set to riff the 1998 remake, how about a WDT about the franchise? Favorite Godzilla movie? Favorites riff(s)? Funny associations with any of the movies?

I’ll tell you one thing Godzilla taught me: Buy MST3K sets as soon as they come out because you never know what will happen. I treasure my 10.1 set with Godzilla vs. Megalon, which was pulled rather quickly over copyright issues. “The Giant Gila Monster,” while entertaining, is no match for the ‘Zilla.

I was going to present some fun facts about Gojira, but these guys did it better.

So have at it!

“Am I childish for pretty much liking any story that can be summarized, “then it gets really weird”?”

If so, then consider me guilty.

Godzilla ’98 couldn’t have been strictly female. I only saw it once in the theater, but didn’t they make a point of stating it was a hermaphrodite (contained both sexual genes)? I don’t know about the original Japanese versions, but the dubs tend to refer to the Big G as a he (calling him a “Papa” in Son of Godzilla, and generally using male pronouns in regard to him/it). My own first Godzilla experience was when I was 8; I rented the now out-of-print original dub of Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster (all that’s available now is the “International Version” called Godzilla vs. Hedorah. It has a different dub cast and doesn’t translate the theme song into English). I’ve been hooked since. The only “real” Godzilla movies (disregarding ’98 as, like in Monster A-Go-Go, there was no Godzilla) was Godzilla 2000 and Rialto’s re-issue of the original, subtitled, at a campus theater back in ’04. My main complaint with the new one is Edwards kept cutting away every time the monsters were about to fight. The only truly interesting human character was killed off fairly early into the proceedings, and the rest of the human cast was not more interesting than watching two monsters duke it out. Aaron Taylor Johnson clearly comes from the Kathy Ireland dull surprise school of acting. Which is not to say I disliked the movie, I just thought it could be better. And it WILL make for a great Rifftrax, as the movie takes itself VERY seriously.

I’ve been a Godzilla fanatic since I was five years old so GvsTSM and GvsMeglaon are naturally two of my favorite episodes. The riffs are solid in both and Megalon gave us Rex Dart Eskimo spy, the Jet Jaguar song, and what is one the best skits in the history of the series: Crow as a despotically insane Orville Redenbacher, lording the glory of his iron fisted popcorn empire over his lowly grandson played by Tom. Btw anyone besides me remember the goofy NBC made for TV movie “popcorn promo” segments starring the REAL Orville and grandson that this skit was actually based on?

I’m really happy Rifftrax is planning to do “Godzilla” ’98 (heavy on the quotation marks) and will gladly buy the MP3 and a dirt cheap copy of the movie just to feel the warm embers of revenge one of my most hated movies ever.

Saw the Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla this past weekend and loved it. It did the spirit of the old movies justice and it was also very refreshing for once to see a summer blockbuster that DIDN’T rely on a whiny son berating and yelling at his dad for plausible “family character development” and brushed off the Michael Bay era formula of horrible jokes, stupid self aware humor and irritating side characters hamming it up. It’s also 100% Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman free, aka the two most loathed and hated parasite “writer” hacks currently infecting the industry. And maybe I’m reaching, BUT it features a scene with a small Japanese boy wearing a red cap who looks like he could maybe, just kinda-possibly be an homage to a certain young cap-wearing child friend of Gamera we all know so well….whattaya think sirs?

I also wanted to add, I can’t remember the line, but at one point during the Megalon fight, Crow does a Howard Cosell voice and that part always cracks me up.

Saw Godzilla vs Mothra this weekend. ‘zilla’s voice is a cross between an elephant screaming and a building made of tin being crunched in one of those things in an auto graveyard that crunches cars.

One of my favorite anecdotes, is that producer Shogo Tomiyama named the Japanese version of the ’98 film’s monster in Godzilla: Final Wars “Zilla” because “they took the god out of Godzilla.” So, officially from Toho, the monster in the ’98 movie is Zilla, not Godzilla.

employee: This is Purgatory Pizza, where your favorite pie will never die. Can I take your order?

Godzilla: Yes. I’d like to order a pizza for delivery.

employee: What can I get for you?

Godzilla: I’d like a large thin crust with Chicken, corn, green peppers, chili -“sigh”- onions. Oh, and add some Japanese children onto that.

employee: Do you have a coupon?

Godzilla: Yes. Buy one large pizza and get a 2 liter Pepsi free.

employee: Okay, that’s a large thin crust with ham, chicken, corn, green peppers, chili powder, then you sighed, onion, and some tasty Canadians?

Godzilla: That was Japanese children, not tasty Canadians.

employee: Japanese children, not tasty Canadians. Sorry about that. Okay, that will be $16.37. Uh, what was your name and address?

    Godzilla: Godzilla. That’s G O D I Z I double-L A. Downtown Tokyo. Your driver will see me.

employee: Give us ’bout thirty minutes.

Godzilla thinking to himself: Did he just add ham to my order? I’ll call them back. No. It will surprise me either way.

The whole Godzilla-as-a-wrestler thing from GvM was Frank right? I remember him saying he loved the El Santo movies because he was a geek for it (and thus why Sampson v. the Vampire Women was his last show), so he probably had his hand in most of those jokes.

What I wouldn’t give to hear Jesse Ventura and Gorilla Monsoon (or Monsoon and Bobby Heenan) commentate that.

I think it’s safe to say that THORNBOT just won the thread. Might as well lock it now; there’s nothing left to add.

I take exception to the feature Sampo attached to this thread. The VERY FIRST fact (that the name “Gojira” came from a burly Toho worker) has not a shred of empirical data to support it.

My favorite Godzilla moment came whilst seeing Godzilla vs. Megalon in a theater and hearing the woman in the row in front of me laugh like a lunatic when Godzilla does his flying-tail tackle on Megalon.

@25: Godzilla’s Revenge and All Monsters Attack are the same movie with different titles, the English and Japanese respectively. I’ve seen the Japanese All Monsters Attack. Trust me, it isn’t much better than the English Godzilla’s Revenge is.

Godzilla vs The Sea Monster was the very first episode I ever watched. I taped it just to watch the movie not know they would be telling joke during the film. Godzilla, I owe you a huge debt of gratitude for introducing me to the best TV show ever made.

Saw the new Godzilla movie this afternoon and I enjoyed it a lot. Now I’m wondering how often they’ll refer to this one when RT riffs on GINO in July.

  17. After midnight I decided to watch GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS. Just for the heck of it. I find out it’s actually Raymond Burr’s birthday today. So now I’m watching GODZILLA 1985, another personal favorite entry in the series.
