Posted in the other thread, but just blown away by the talent Joel has gotten for his cow-town puppet show revival. It just shows the level of popularity this show has in the comedy world.

  6. Good to know Charlie, Beez and Paul are back. i actually had wondered what became of Charlie the COMPOSER of the MST3K theme. It seemed to me like he just fell off the planet. If someone can interview, they should!

I never really liked Paul’s contribution to the episode guide. That is the only thing I have to judge his writing by.

His onscreen performances were fine. His writing? I don’t care.

    Why doesn’t Johnny care?

Rob Schrab and Dan Harmon, of Scud: The Disposable Assassin and La Cosa Nostroid renown (yes, I know both have gone on to other things). This is about the only thing that has piqued my interest so far.

I’m sure there was a method behind it, but shouldn’t saying that you have all this incredible talent contributing as writers be mentioned more than a few days before the drive ends? I guess they wanted to be absolutely sure they were getting 9-12 episodes before announcing it? Seems odd is all

Really happy about the return of Paul, too — we need at least one Midwestern voice in there. How else will we know about the savings at Menard’s?

I’d been curious about the whereabouts of Paul Chaplin. Considering that he was involved with the mst3k.com cartoon shorts I figured he was one of the most likely to join the project.

I’m glad they got at least Paul to come back. That guy was with them since, what was it, Teenagers From Outer Space, or further back? That’s good, he knows the ropes.

The only thing that really bothered me about Paul’s involvement in the ACEG writings is towards the end he was doing almost all of them, and a good portion of the time he didn’t have much to add.

There are a few funny things he’ wrote in the original book though like he notes certain host segments being put in the wrong order, and blames Mike for this since he’s the head writer, and it’s his job to make sure something like that doesn’t happen.

Kinda bummed Dan Harmon is involved. Even though I respect his contributions to comedy or whatever, the dude’s a major raging asshole.

This guest writer news is awesome, but I’m overjoyed about the returning talent, especially Paul Chaplin.

Paul was responsible for some of my favorite guest appearances in MST3K’s original run (I wish he and Bridget had more to say during the Comic-Con Reunion Panel), and it’s outstanding that he’ll be working with the MST3K team again.

If we discount every comedic person who’s a raging asshole, the available list dwindles quickly… ;-)

I am not a businessman, but it seems like announcing some of these writers last Friday would have given a few weekend days for buzz to build up running into the final week. I do think that if they go “over the top,” the talent they have now shown they have at their disposal will be the main factor for the big finish we all hope they get in the next few days.

Also, I was surprisingly euphoric to see Beez and Chaplin. It did make it feel more like home all of a sudden.

That made me think he would have been less likely to be involved with this project, but I’m glad he is! Pleasantly surprised.

Justin Roiland – wasn’t he in Babes In Roiland?

So awesome. Having a lot of writers for mst3k is actually a really good thing, unlike some other forms of comedy. I think rifftrax suffered somewhat because they often only had a few people writing riffs.

Charlie Erickson! There are four names that appear in the credits of every single episode, and he’s one of them. It’s great to discover that he a. really does exist, and b. what he’s been up to.

Great update from Joel! I liked the people he named to help out but it’s the best to see Paul Chaplin back on MST3K! From Pitch to Observer to Sandy, Pearl’s date, Paul’s on-screen appearances were funny. Welcome back, Paul, and welcome back Charlie! Bees and Crist! And welcome to all the new staff and guest writers and musicians. It’s groovy Dana Gould with the gang, too. I enjoyed his stand-up, and he played Jim Morrison in a Ben Stiller show sketch in the early 1990s (“I’m not really deaaaaaaaaad!!”). All indications for this new season are….POOM!!!

This reminds me, that even with the wonders of the internet, I still haven’t been able to find a clip of the Dana Gould routine with “go to bed, old man” in it.

Joining with everyone else, I am very excited to see that Paul and Beez are returning. Paul because, well, it was one of the original writers and can help show the young bucks how it’s done. And Beez, she definitely *got it*. Her production and costuming work was fantastic, not to mention her on camera stuff as well. With Jef Maynard a Doctor now I was hoping Beez and/or Pantsleg, er, Patrick Brantseg would return to help with the art direction. Maybe Jeff Stonehouse will return as a DP, but he might be too expensive for us now!

I guess I scanned the list without seeing his name on there until I saw your post about it. I read Ready Player One a couple of months ago and really had a blast with it. Ernest Cline is a great choice and he’ll be indispensable towards keeping the show awesome. I suspected he might’ve been a MSTie, and now I guess I know!

I get the feeling that was an underdeveloped bit he only did a handful of times then abandoned but it just stuck in one of the Brains’ heads as a signature part of his act. Another piece of MST3K apocrypha, along with “I thought you were Dale” and “I’m not going back, Jim!”

I’m really thrilled to see Paul’s involved in this. I always feel like he was a little underrated as an MST3K contributor because he never had a regular role in front of the cameras the way that everyone else did; most of what he did was in the writing room, despite some choice guest roles, and so he never developed as big a fan following. He deserves this in a big way, and I’m glad to see him get it.

It’s funny how opinions will vary; I’ve always loved Paul’s contributions to the episode guide. He’s a brilliant writer, in my opinion. (That first sentence of his description for Fire Maidens, for example — I love it.)

There. I said it, and I’d say it again if I had to.

    Welcome back, Paul!
