Vol. 17 Out of Print

It appears that Volume XVII (17) has gone out-of-print. Shout Factory has listed it as such on their website product page and our source says there are movie rights issues.

Released: March 16, 2010, it contains episodes 101- The Crawling Eye, 415- The Beatniks (with “General Hospital, segment 2), 910- The Final Sacrifice and 1005- Blood Waters of Dr. Z.

It’s likely Shout Factory lost the rights to The Final Sacrifice. Shout removed the annotated edition of Final Sacrifice from the official MST3K YouTube channel. In addition, RiffTrax removed for sale the MST3K episode’s product page entry. Shame about that, given RiffTrax “fixed” the major audio glitches that were present on the DVD release and all other digital copies from Vimeo, Vudu, and iTunes.

Keep in mind, Shout Factory producer Jordan Fields stated in a Satellite News interview article that they licensed the film rights to these episodes ranging from a 5 – 10 year period. It’s been exactly 7 years since Volume 17 was first released. Similarly, the rights to the Soultaker episode expired in 2017, 7 years after release.

It’s possible that the rights holders of Soultaker & Final Sacrifice wanted too much money to renew. If so, From Shout’s perspective it’s a cost vs. benifit analysis. Those DVD volumes had been out for some time. Most fans who’d buy them already do. Doesn’t make much sense to renew the rights from their end fir extra money.

I do seem to recall that–I remember back when we thought it was forever lost when he tried to stick it back to the Brains by claiming he was going out to re-market the original, now that it was ripe to be “rediscovered by its cult-classic audience”.
We thought we’d finally gotten RID of him.

But, as @11 says, it’s more likely the Soultaker/Sacrifice owners.
That’s the problem with cheap 90’s direct-video, they’re still around to complain.

Here endeth the lesson: Gather ye physical-disk acorns while ye may. Anything can happen.

I think it might be “Beatnicks.” The other three were on Pluto TV fairly recently.

Yeah, I bought this already but it’s under $20 new at Amazon so any folks here who do NOT have it should order it post haste (one thing I love about Amazon Prime is I would get this for under $20 even including two-day shipping).

As others have said, gather ye acorns…

Tbh, if it’s been 7 years, I can’t say we didn’t have time to get it.

(Speaking of iTunes the big sale on MST last month has ended, that also caught me off guard.)

A lot of the past sets seem to be on discount on Amazon at the moment (the XXX’s in the $25-28 range), so I decided to be on the safe side and fill in a missing one or two for my collection–
Just like you always hug your children closer after seeing a disaster on the news, another Shout title going out of print makes you want to make sure you’ve got those physical disks bought. :(

  21. Isn’t this the third Shout! set to go out of print? Rifftrax has also pulled 5 titles from their catalog in the past few years. Word to the wise – get everything as soon as possible…you never know how long the rights will last.

It sucks that this one went out of print, and not just for The Final Sacrifice, as The Crawling Eye has obvious historical value and both The Beatniks and Blood Waters of Dr. Z are really good episodes. Hopefully everyone that doesn’t have it can snatch it up quick before the 3rd party seller vultures jack up the price on them.

And we’re still waiting for an announcement about the next box set…
I wonder if it’s rights or a timing issue (what with the new season out and all). I know there’s only about 10 non-KTMA eps left, and many of those are on the “unlikely” list, but they’ve pulled miracles before…

This doesn’t really have anything to do with the DVDs but I’m not sure where else to ask: Does anyone know if they’ll be uploading any more classic episodes to Netflix?

I ordered mine…I swear Amazon said it was a two-day delivery, now it’s estimated for 5/31/17! It’s intolerable having to wait so long to watch crappy movies that I already saw 4-5 times…This must be what North Korea is like…

We hope…also…Does anyone know where we can watch the “Turkey Day 2016” Host Segments? I missed it last November, and just assumed it would be on YOU TUBE, which i believe it was, briefly, then taken down…

It’s a shame it’s out of print, but everything goes eventually.

Let’s get popcorn ready for the prices to go up.
