eh, it’s not “edgy” anymore to poke fun at mainstream releases

    literally everyone does it

that’s one reason why I could never get into RiffTrax, even though it stars Mike, Bill, and Kevin. It just seems too mean-spirited to me and focuses more on recent films that were met with mixed reviews (or even films that are actually good/popular)

with MST3K, they focus more on obscure B-movies that not everyone has seen and even have a certain reverence for them

Hm. I’m pretty “meh” on the Star Wars ones. I have the riffs for I-VI and, I dunno, I just don’t feel the riffing is that well-served by the movies, or vice-versa, or something? Like, I haven’t played any of them more than once, for whatever that’s worth.

Riffing on one of the Disney Star Wars is a really tough task. The fans that have become jaded with the tired sameness of them are simply not going to care. The fans whose nostrils flare at any attempt to disparage their galaxy far, far away are going to be against it viscerally. This may have been a poor choice for Rifftrax.

RiffTrax has really moved away from mainstream releases over the last four to five years. Most of their release are firmly in MST3K-style b-movies these days.

This is their first mainstream movie riff in exactly a year, when they did Rogue One.

Their new fan cult-identification for Ice Cream Bunny, Tommy Wiseau and Balloonland pretty much killed off their would-be cottage-industry for cheap attention-getting Recent Nerd-Movie poking. They’ll probably do Marvel Black Panther or Infinity War because they can, but they know the last of their Star Wars Nerd-Bashing money is in marketing the crap out of the public-domain Holiday Special, and anything else is just a tie-in.

Like or hate the current state of Honest Trailers, HT’s taken over RT’s shtick on recent movies with the funnier benefit of scene-specific By Fans For Fans jokes (see, actually watching the movie DOES write better riffs!), and even without HT’s version, Last Jedi has become SUCH low-hanging fruit by now, it gets squished and stepped on.
A Porg on the cover, guys?…Seriously?? That was Cole’s, right, or did Bill do the Luke/blue-milk jokes?

Didn’t Batman vs. Superman come out a few months after Rogue One? As for The Last Jedi, I’m starting to wonder if I’m the only person who liked it.

Also, is there anyone else here for whom the Rifftrax iPhone app (which supposedly instantly syncs the commentary with the movie) never seems to work right?

I didn’t like The Last Jedi all that much (it had its moments), but at least it was a lot better than The Force Awakens, which was just awful.

I have no real interest in this particular product, but it doesn’t make me hate anyone for succeeding in profiting from said product.

The Force Awakens riff was great. The Rogue One one wasn’t as fun. We will check this one out this weekend.

I personally like the mp3 ones and would like to see more of them. However, b-movies do have the potential to be much funnier (although they can also be much worse, as well). The movies with mp3s tend to be less sleep-inducing.

I’ve never had a problem with the Rifftrax app. However, I prefer to reauthor the DVDs with the riff audio mixed in.

The Last Jedi sucked on toast, but I’m tempted to buy the DVD now just so I can enjoy hearing it riffed.

EricJ, please go away. If you were the first fan of MST3K I would have met, I would have hated the show.

    You must be new.

I won’t get into the whole diatribe again about why many of us feel the way we do about Eric. If you need a re-fresher, please roll back through the last few Rifftrax threads here to see him in action.

Hell, go back 20+ years in the Usenet/Groups archives as well.

    tl;dr – not personal attack. Attack on a troll. There’s a difference.
