RIP Roger Whittaker

France — Multi-lingual whistling troubador Roger Whittaker died Sept. 12 in a hospital near Toulouse. He was 87.

Best known for his 1969 hit “Durham Town,” he was beloved by audiences on several continents. His other hits included “The Last Farewell” and “New World in the Morning,” and he sold nearly 50 million records around the world, his website said.

As played by Kevin, Whittaker visited Castle Forrester in a host segment in episode 903- THE PUMAMAN. In another segment in the same episode, Crow and Servo use their “genuine Aztec mask” to control Roger.

The BBC has the story.

Thanks to Gordon for the heads up.

  1. And is remembered fondly for Mike and Kevin remembering one line from “The Last Farewell” from being personally annoyed by Roger’s 1-800 record commercials from the 70’s, and joking about how that was all they knew. (And therefore anyone.)

He’s evil, you know, because he’s easygoing mainstream entertainment from another decade.

He deserved better from the American audience, I think. His music was out of the American mainstream at that time and, as mentioned above, those incessant and irritating TV commercials were a poor introduction here, but he had a great voice and his musical choices were pleasant and memorable. RIP.

I think you’re reading far too much into this. Making jokes about someone doesn’t equal hating them.

We all know how people reacted over the years to this show joking about them. Some took it in stride while others were Ray Dennis Steckler.

No, no, I meant that Mike, and Kevin (in particular) seem to be the ones with the functional anger-issues trouble that frequently confuses Good-Natured Ribbing with Our Enemies Must Be Punished For Annoying Us.

Not unlike Joel vs. Gallagher, or the people who never came to grips with the change in hosts in Season 5.
