How about Most Desired Pre MST appearence. I have seen Joel on a rerun of the HBO young comedians special. He has appeared on Saturday Night Live. SNL is currently releasing season sets, although who knows if they will get to early 80s, considered by most to be the worst, but if they do, Joel would be on there. Then there is what appears on the MST3K.com page: “The Wall”. If someone had recorded any of the Brains comedy sets in the 80s/90s (Joel, Mike, Frank, Josh, Trace, Paul or Mary Jo) I’d love to see those.

Another suggestion: Has your favorite band or musical artist been referenced by MST3K?

Whether it’s Servo belting out “The South’s Gonna Do It Again”, Bobo playing “Only Time Will Tell” on his trumpet, or Lorenzo Lomas in the Gino Vanelli Story, have J/M&tB’s mentioned your favorite musical act?

I’d like to offer “Oh, I Get It NOW!” Basically, it amounts to your favorite riff you didn’t understand then, but ended up learning more about later which made it funny.

I get a lot more MST references now then I did as a teen, mostly because I’ve learned a lot more about culture since then. I still have moments where I go, “Where have I heard that before…oh yeah!”

How about alternate stingers? Not to say that the original stingers were bad, but to pick some other stinger-worthy moments that didn’t make the cut.

This is a pretty good idea, I think.

As someone who has only started posting in the last month or two I hope that some of these might be revisited in 2 or 3 years if there is enough new people to make it fresh.

    Best/Worst Spy Related Stuff

Since there was a limited number of spy related movies, inventions and riffs (e.g. ‘Eskimo Spy’) this category would be open to actors, missions, equipement, theme songs, advesaries, henchman etc.

It might be a fun psychological experiment to ask:

“Which MST3K (host segment) Character Do You Most ‘Realte’ To and Why? (Tom, Crow, Joel, Gypsy, Forrester, Frank, Bobo, Erhardt … etc)”

    Or

“If You Were An MST3K Character Which Would You Be & Why?”

  17. Robert Denby says:

How about your favorite movie used by MST3K? Meaning a movie featured on an episode that you might actually watch without the riffing? Mine would have to be Time Chasers.

  19. Cabbage Patch Elvis says:

I agree with #18. Around Oscars time there were three weeks discussing “Worst” performances. I thought those were some of the most fun topics, and really promoted a ton of discussion. I’m also digging #17 Robert Denby’s idea, but I cannot see how ANYBODY would want to watch Time Chasers on it’s own. BOO. Just horrible.

  20. Manny Sanguillen says:

All those discussions should be links. I tried to click on some of them and was disappointed, (Mainly disappointed that I’m such an idiot that I can’t tell the difference between a link and a non-link).
But really, if all those discussions are still posted on-line, it would be good to have a list like that which we can just click on & go right to it.

  21. mmg816 says:

I like #20s idea of making discussion topics linkable. How about adding a separate click on the left for a weekend discussion archive? The real Manny Sanguillen would have gotten at least a RBI single clicking on those topics.

Movies that actually could have been good

    Best director

    Etc.

  23. Kay, ...just Kay says:

I would like to suggest, “What have we learned from bad movies?” or words to that effect and “you can tell it’s a bad movie when ______ happens”. Missing an astronaut, dig out your trusty Geiger counter. (The Incredible Melting Man, Monster-a-Go-Go, etc.) The Dangers of Dancing. People who dance to fast music, such as rock and roll, are more likely to be attacked or killed and/or eaten by a monster than non-dancers.(Eaagh, Gila Monster, Creeping Terror) Folks who dance to slow music are less likely to be killed, but will probably be attacked. (Horror at Party Beach, Revenge of the Creature, etc.) (Horror – wild, fast-dancing girlfriend killed early in film, respectful slow-dancing, scientist’s daughter survives. I believe Joel once said, “you know it’s a low budget film when the cars don’t actually crash into one another.” (The Crawling Hand)

I always wanted to discuss movies that could be remade successfully. Kind of like what’s been done with Clonus, only successfully.

Oh, and put me down for a discussion of our favorite MST3K movies. I would love to see how many people on here actually enjoyed some of the films because I enjoy many of them (Time Chasers, Diabolik, Phase IV, The Beatniks, Kitten with a Whip…the list goes on.

How about “Most unconvincing villains”. I nominate the car-hating bureaucrat from The Last Chase”.

Maybe also Alpha from Operation Double 007. He’s unseen and unheard throughout the movie, does nothing discernable, and he lets a twit “dressed like a space angel” lead an insurrection against him.

Create your perfect MST 4 ep set. Could be fun to see who goes for favorites, who tries to balance out the different eras, etc. I imagie the creative could even design packaging.

    #29

That’s easy: the four Russo-Finnish movies.

Two Joel episodes – The Day the Earth Froze & The Magic Voyage of Sinbad

Two Mike episodes – The Sword and the Dragon & Jack Frost (which would represent the Sci-Fi era, too)

Sorry if I missed this, but what about something related to the Amazing Colossal Episode Guide? I LOVE that book, and I love the writing. For example, each contributor has his or her own unique style (well, duh). I also LOVE how Paul and Mary Jo needle each other constantly thoughtout the book.

Maybe you could do something about that.

Well, since Season 8 is coming up, how about finding which episode it was when the Sci-Fi Channel finally clicked with you?

My first favorite episode was 804 – Deadly Mantis. Everything felt natural after a bit of jarring, and the riffing finally was making me laugh a lot more frequently. Plus, there’s just something about the casual “driving” theme in the host segments that just gelled with me.

  34. Jeff Q says:

Thanks, Sampo, for giving us this list! (And for making us laugh about love… again.) I missed the “Personal riffs” discussion when it started, but now that I know it’s there, I’ve shared a bunch of my own riffs (with the context, so you can find the scenes in the episodes) from my MST3K Quotes website.

A lot are from Invaders from the Deep (or, more accurately, from a Stingray episode that was part of IftD, since I’ve never seen this missing KTMA show). For anyone who hasn’t seen the Stingray episode, rent it from Netflix — it’s really goofy. It must have made great fodder for the Brains.
