Lost KTMA Episode Found

An amazingly well-preserved copy of episode K03 – STAR FORCE: FUGITIVE ALIEN 2 was recently found at a garage sale and uploaded to YouTube by Arthur Putie. If the movie looks familiar, Best Brains would again riff it in episode 318.

I love that Tammy gets to be a bad ass in one of the scenes missing from the CC version.

The quality is truly incredible on this found episode. It’s a lot better than several of the episodes Cheesy Flix used to deal back in the day.
If anybody out there puts together a DVD based on this let me know. That hole is still there on the media shelf to fill.

Appreciate the fact that Arthur uploaded this, given the fact he lost his lovely wife Deirdre to the marriage counsellor.

There has been a new capture of the tape made, and posted in DVD format to Archive.org.

    https://archive.org/details/k-03-sony-2

There are two “raw” captures made, one on a JVC DVD recorder, and another on a Sony. The maker of the captures has posted elsewhere that the JVC version has some issues, so the Sony version is probably the one to get. The Sony version also preserves some audio that was on the tape after the episode, It seems to be an experiment with the doors sequence from the Mike era – audio only.

The only problem with these raw captures is that they are split across two DVDs. You’ll have to burn them to two DVDs as a “Part 1” and a “Part 2”. I’ve yet to examine the encoding on the DVD’s, but I’m hoping that the audio has been captured in PCM format, and that it might be possible to compress the audio to AC3, and fit the two parts on one DVD without re-compressing the video. If not, I may have to re-author these into one dual layered DVD for my own use. I’m not getting up and switching the DVDs halfway though the movie… like a sucker!

I remember 12″ Laserdiscs when you had to get up and turn them over half way through your movie.

If anyone is looking for a DVD version, I have compressed the Sony captured DVDs to a single layered DVD5. I made new (amateurish, but functional) menus with DVD Styler, and recompressed it with DVD Rebuilder, using a profession-grade encoder using 9 passes. You can find it here:

    https://archive.org/details/MST3K_K03_DVD5

I also made a dual layered DVD9 version for myself, with uses the untouched video from the original upload, but I’m not sure anyone would want it. If you want the untouched video, and don’t have access to blank dual layered DVDs, you could just download the original files, and burn them in two parts to two DVD5s. If anyone wants the DVD9 version, let me know, and I’ll upload it.
