Weekend Discussion Thread: Most Memorable Crow Moments

I can’t believe we haven’t done this one!

Next weekend at Dragon*Con, Bill and Trace will take part in a panel that I guarantee will take place in too small a room: “Crow vs. Crow,” in which the two actors that portrayed Crow Tiberious (“the”) Robot will discuss the character they played. In preparation for that, Trace recently tweeted a request for suggestions of the most memorable Crow moments (so they can put together a video featuring them). I was going to tweet back with a link to the Weekend Discussion Thread that SURELY (don’t call me Shirley!) we must have done! Then I checked and realized we hadn’t done one!

So, to help them out, let’s settle on the best Crow moments. You get to choose TWO and TWO ONLY moments from the Trace years and two from the Bill years.

Me: For the Trace years I’d go with the “I don’t get you” bit from “Monster-A-Go-Go” and “Am I qualified?” from “King Dinosaur.” From the Bill years: “Turkey Volume Guessing Man” from “Riding with Death” and “Mike becomes a werecrow” from “Werewolf.”

What are your picks?

This one is really equal parts Crow and Tom but what about the way they tag team Joel on the Pina Colada question?
“It doesn’t make the hurt go away.”

    For Trace:
    1. “The Match Game” – Trace’s puppetry, memory and impersonation skills are severely tested in this tour-de-force sketch.
    2. “Crow’s Report on President Hayes” – Though most of the credit goes to the writing of the sketch, Trace is able to convince the viewer of sincerity – Crow believes that what he’s reading is researched and accurate.

    Bill:
    1. “Documentary on Women” – Others have spoken of this above, I simply concure with it.
    2. “The Observer’s Tests” – There’s something simple and yet perfectly fitting in Crow’s exchange:
    “How’d I do?”
    “You bombed.”
    “Ah big deal…”

(Of course, the fact that Crow has to bite Mike only makes the scene that much more enjoyable.)

Crow should not be remembered for his smaller comedic victories that produced a chuckle or two in a fleeting moment. Rather he should be revered for his pop culture shattering, laugh-inducing, t-shirt slogan inspiring catch phrase which was oft quoted both around the office water cooler and in the schoolyard. Yes Of course I speak of the immortal line “YOU KNOW YOU WANT ME BABY!”

Yeah. Now if he still has any of those millions of t-shirts laying around, how can we get them?

I agree with all of the above–I love Crow T. Robot. (BTW, I love Tom Servo, too–you really can’t have one without the other, and my favorite of the moment basically depends on my mood. . . . Um, I probably shouldn’t get into that without help from my psychiatrist . . . Anyway . . . ) Let me second, among others: Crow traveling back in time to straighten the young Mike out; “Well . . . This cheese isn’t gonna cut itself”; Crow bonding with his artificial “mother” and shrieking madly when it gets taken away from him; Crow shrieking madly when his eyeballs catch fire after getting “death-rayed”; Crow breaching the hull in the movie; all his various screenplays & documentaries. Let me add: the black, evil Crow doppelganger (okay, that’s technically a second of #150, but I thought of adding it on my own yesterday); Crow cutting himself in half in shop class (“Skydivers”); Crow in a thong in the “Teenager from Outer Space” inspired fashion show; Crow staring at Mike after they return from the edge of the universe and saying, “Don’t go there, man . . . Crow pimping the midget in “Hercules & the Captive Women”. Do I have to add that I love both the Trace and Bill Crows? Just two facets of the same wonderful personality!

Oh, and let me add that, even though I am a tenured prof at a prestigious New England college, I have my Crow T. Robot displayed proudly right on my desk, in front of God and everybody. My most prized possession!

New fave moment….Trace vs Bill that will be shown on Volume XVII! Granted, it won’t be released until sometime in 2010, but something like this just has to be great!

For Trace, I’d say the Angels’ Revenge Ambrosia bit, Starfighters on hold, and the one where he escapes but Forrester is standing right next to him, whichever movie that was.

For Bill, I loved the Agent for Harm profanity laced deposition for Mike’s trial, the Maltese Men thing in Final Justice, and the Time Chasers time travels.

“Man, was I a jerk 5 minutes ago!”

As everyone else does, I thought of two more of the best, Trace Selling ‘Grit’ (I think that in Crash of the Moons,(way better than Manhunt in Space) and Bill’s AMC Loner Crow from Delta Knights.

Two common things from the 60’s & 70’s that aren’t around anymore, Grit & AMC.

Okay, throw in two more –

Trace’s Crow’s performance throughout the Mirror Mirror episode in Last of the Wild Horses, as well as his imitation of Spock in the flower-spraying Star Trek episode from Swamp Diamonds.

And not to slight Bill, the “I think I’m a witch” and the selling of his soul to Stan in Touch of Satan, and going back in time to hang out with Mike’s Dad as well as Mike’s girlfriend in Terror from the Year 5000.

No wonder we haven’t had this discussion before. There’s too many choices!!! People’s brains are exploding because they can’t decide on a couple moments out of thousands!

    Okeeday:

    From the Trace Years:
1.) Crow’s comment on William Shatner from ‘THE CRAWLING HAND’ pretty much summed up his whole career. After Joel comments “I just don’t know how Shatner does it week after week.”; Crow sums it all up by saying “I don’t know why he does it or who lets him do it!”

2.) TIMMY from ‘FIRE MAIDENS FROM OUTER SPACE.’ Crow broguht Timmy after childishly saying “I prayed for a friend and he came!” I like how Crow gets jealous of Timmy and is later seen fighting him.

Honorary mentions: Crow’s “marriage” to Servo from ‘RACKET GIRLS’; Crow’s Jack Elam from ‘GIRL IN LOVER’S LANE’; Crow accidently sawing himself in half from the short before ‘SKYDIVERS.’

    From the Bill Years:

1.) Crow going back in time to met Mike’s younger self from ‘TIME CHASERS.’ The fact that there exist two Crows in two different time periods makes this one of the best ‘Crow’ sequences ever!.

2.) Crow convincing himself he really is a bear from ‘JACK FROST’ much to the ire of everyone on the ship..

Honorable mentions: Crow dressed like the greasy Buss from ‘GIRL IN GOLD BOOTS’ and having Mike pour beer on him; Crow being a bitchy restaraunt critic from ‘I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF’; and Crow playing a skull from ‘THE SCREAMING SKULL.’

    Als one more note:

In ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie’; Crow delivered perhaps the most influential quote in my life.

“I calculated the odds of this succeeding vs. the odds I was doign something incredibely stupid, and….I went ahead anyway.”
