This is the best Joel interview I’ve seen yet. He’s pretty open, and I think it’s the closest he’s come to calling JM bad names. I always KNEW that’s why he left – interesting that he comes out and says it.

Here’s the part I found most interesting:

“It’s very similar to the beginning of ‘Mystery Science Theater.’ I didn’t have a theme song when we started. That came once we realized people were saying, ‘What are you doing?'”

I’d wondered what the KTMA opening was like before they’d done the episodes it samples from. And the answer seems to be, there wasn’t one. It probably premiered on K04, given that they shot the shows very soon before broadcast, and probably wouldn’t have had the time to assemble an opening between shooting K03 (the last episode with footage in the opening) and broadcasting it.

Yeah, it’s interesting to finally see the real reason Joel left. Like mdwileygrl, you knew something was up (you don’t leave mid-season unless something bad is going down). Too bad Mallon didn’t leave. From the riffing RiffTrax did on one of the Mallon ‘bot cartoons, doesn’t sound like there’s much love for the man from anybody.
