I was just looking for this, thanks! Not to add to your in-basket, but can this be put into Ward e under the Lists or some other location?

I notice there was never any favorite Frank or favorite Bill moments. (I know fave Crow can fall into the Bill moments, but that doesn’t count Brain Guy).

I’ve got a couple.. what about the most obvious missed opportunities for riffing?

The most classic of course, would be the recycling of old Battlestar Galactica footage during Space Mutiny, but I know there have been plenty of times, especially during the early episodes, where a character says something bizarre or open-ended, leaving a perfect opportunity for a golden zinger, and Mike/Joel and the bots just let it ride on by.

Also, what is the most ill thought-out plan a villain/hero has come up with on MST3K?

Obviously, we can’t include any of Mike’s numerous attempts to escape the SOL. Also, this pre-supposes that the villain(s) of the film actually have a plan that doesn’t involve lumbering around, randomly killing people until they get shot/electrocuted/disappear for no reason.

My personal favorite is Q from Mighty Jack, with his evil torture box that can blind you… unless you keep your eyes closed. :)

  4. Troy says:

Oh, another one would be: Which of the cast does the best _______ voice?

After recently rewatching the CT treatment of Wasp Woman, I’d have to say Joel is king of children, animal, and monster voices (bonus points if it’s an animal that’s just been shot up with some kind of drug), while Trace is definitely the best senile old man, God, generic announcer, and Minnesotan housewife.

How about..the least favorite host segment?? Or how about..the movie they should have done instead of _______??

  6. trickymutha says:

I often wonder- what episodes, especially during the Sci-Fi days, could have used a short? Two episodes come to mind- “The Undead” and “Space Mutiny” both have way too much filler in the host segments IMO.

I saw the opening of an episode shown to me by my brother in law. I think it was Side Hackers. The tape was damaged so maybe twenty minutes or so.

    Remember, the first one’s free.

The talk about the band in the “Girl in Gold Boots” thread makes me think: “best musical performance in a MSTed movie” (to be followed the next week with “worst…”). Candidates that leap to my mind are Little Richard’s number in “Catalina Caper” and the Night Jumpers’ performance in “The Skydivers.”

  12. Garth Arizona says:

How about movies that should have been MSTed?

How did they not get around to these movies:

    1. YOR: Hunter from the Future (Reb Brown’s Magnum Opus)
    2. Starcrash: How can you go wrong with David Hasselhoff?
    3. Santa with Muscles: A hilariously awful Hulk Hogan movie from 1996. Too recent? Werewolf also came out in 1996.

Go to the spoonyexperiment.com to check out his riffs on Yor and Santa with Muscles…you will not be dissappointed. Also check out Strike Commando and Robowar, which are two more Reb Brown classics. This is not meant to be an advertisement for The Spoony Experiment, but I can’t help it. MSTies need to check it out, just like they need to know about Cheap Seats. Great riffing is hard to come by.

To coincide with the Harry Potter theme park portion of Universal Studios, I would like to see a discussion of what would be at an MST3K theme park. What kind of rides would there be, what would be on the menu for food items, what other souvenirs could you buy and other stuff like that.

How about if you could pick your very own Shout! Factory DVD boxed set. You’d have to narrow it down to your favorite 4 movies of course. Tough.

  15. ck says:

    How about Risque Comments/Skits?
For example, in Track of the Moon Beast:
Paul G. Carlson: “I’d like you to meet a friend of mine.”
Crow: “Could you at least kiss me first!”

And of course there’s Crows’s and Brain Guy’s performance art
in the Icky Elf Guy movie.

(Well, what can you expect of a movie that features
the band that played California Lady?)

Of course, in the above comment The Band That Played
    California Lady was in TofMB.

I can’t believe we haven’t done a weekend discussion thread about our favorite organ-related scenes in MST3K.

I’m thinking of course of John Carradine stopping the movie for an organ recital in The Unearthly. Or when Batwoman stops the movie for an organ recital in The Wild World of Batwoman. And then of course there’s The Amazing Transparent man where an organ is in almost every scene, and yet no one plays it. Santa plays an organ in the opening musical montage of Santa Claus, and an organ also makes a brief appearance in the short The Days of our Years. Lest I forget, Pearl also plays an organ in the castle from time to time.

Wait, I think I’ve just listed them all. Never mind.

Okay, for a real suggestion, I was thinking of something along the lines of our favorite moments in MST movies where the characters say or do something that is patently ridiculous, or something that just isn’t true, or something just obviously absurd happens, and yet everyone in the movie accepts it as perfectly normal. I don’t quite know if that’s the best way to phrase it, or if it’s perhaps too broad or undefinable a category to tackle. Some MST movies, after all, have aliens with vacuum cleaners for noses.

For example, I’m thinking of the moment in Agent From HARM where agent Chance off-handedly mentions the “judo range” and everyone in the movie accepts this as a normal thing. In real life, we would all say “WTF?” but in the movie’s universe people say “sure thing!” Another example might be, and now I am being serious, Batwoman holding an organ recital in the middle of the day for her minions in TWWOB. In real life we would all say “WTF?” but in the movie they seem to be perfectly fine with it. Or when Krankor in Prince of Space tells everybody to take a five-minute break in the middle of their crisis, and everyone says “sure thing Kranky baby.”

The reason this might be an impossible category is because you would have to exclude the obvious suspension of disbelief moments where people fly or turn invisible or turn into werewolves or whatever; things that of course would not happen in real life, but are different in kind from someone, say, asking if they can shave in the middle of a conversation (Agent From HARM again).

Anyway, to everyone reading this, if I forgot any organ-related moments or appearances, please list them.

  19. Mike Sh. says:

I didn’t see anything along these lines: what you might call eye-opening obscure references. That is, the moment you heard them reference something that you had no idea anyone besides yourself could ever get, at which point you understood how special a show it was.

In my case, it was during “The Unearthly” when the incidental music included a short vibraphone passage, and Tom Servo said “Adolph Hitler on vibes”.

When I heard this, I thought, “Holy Cow! I didn’t know anyone besides me knew about the Bonzo Dog Band!”

Anyhow, has this topic been covered?

  20. incrediblehorriblemrlimpet says:

Perhaps favorite riff or vocal sound effect that intentionally and absurdly misrepresents a character or scene.

For example, Mike turning Screaming Skull’s socially lacking Mickey into a dashing and debonair man of the world (“Ahh. Bon Jour my sweet.”) or making the lady passenger sitting behind Bart Fargo turn into a stuffed-up-nosed fussy kid (“I doe doe”) when the stewardess asks if she’s feeling better, or turning Ortega into a marriage counselor during Jerry’s mental breakdown in “Mixed Up Zombies”: (“ya gotta tell her every day that ya love her”).

To include a sound effect example, Servo inserts a totally out of place, wicked lead guitar riff into John Agar’s love interest’s gentle “banjo” playing in Mole People.
