Mixed emotions on these live DVD’s. Mostly, I can do without the laugh track, but the audience reaction does usually make the riffers’ performances better…
Personally I’m not into the live DVDs, good tho I’m sure they are.
I’ve already seen it, it’s really really good. I highly recommend this title!

irritating. Won’t buy it.
I will buy it to relive the experience of seeing this show live last July in Philadelphia. We sat in the front row both nights in Philly last year. It was great fun.
As much as I would like to see more silhouettes, the live shows have been a huge improvement over the earlier stuff. I look forward to buying this one.
I love CT and all but does EVERY film they do have to contain midgets?! :roll:
The silhouettes I can take them or leave them.Just as long as they’re funny and keep making them,I’ll keep buying them! And this one,I’m going to buy! I’ll always support CT as well.
I wish they would stop releasing the live shows. Ugh. Just another one not to buy I guess.
Have they changed their format to live shows only for DVD releases?
I was initially skeptical about the live-show DVDs, but I’ve been won over. The audience is mixed way down, so you can get the energy of the live show without the audience overpowering the riffs. I wish they’d thought to do that on Monty Python back when–the audience there routinely trampled on the dialogue.
@ #8: Apparently, the answer is yes, yes they do.
@ #12: Check out The Mighty Boosh on DVD. Not only is it the greatest new comedy show I’ve seen in many years, but there is some interesting stuff on their DVD set about live audience vs. no audience. The show’s original pilot had a live audience, which after they reviewed it caused them to drop the idea of having an audience at all for the full production shows that actually aired. It’s a stark contrast to Monty Python or Red Dwarf, but I believe they made the right call. After seeing the pilot episode with live laughter, their TV show does work better without it.
HMMM. I count Oozing Skull, Santa Claus, Frankenstein & now Tiki Island. I don’t recall any midgets in the other films. That’s 4 of 10 releases. How does that equal ALL?
you got the guy from attack of the the eye creatures and the old man from crawling hand and oozing skull. This one looks interesting.
To be honest I was anti-live, and I’m still on the fence. I loved “Alien Factor”, but just didn’t care for “East Meets Watts”. The production of “East..” just seemed off, at times the crowd was too pronounced. They seemed to have corrected that with “Alien..” so I’m hoping “Tiki..” will be pretty good.
I was also skeptical of the live DVDs, but they’ve been better. The studio DVDs lacked energy.
I see why some like the live audience,and the arguments
make sense, but it just doesn’t work for me. However, the
CT format doesn’t have the two most annoying features
of audience sound:
1) canned laughter (it’s funny, people, see!) :roll:
2) A sitcom special, when the show’s been on a while
the inevitable applause when one of the stars first appears. :roll:
Would it be possible to issue two versions, one with the
audience and one without? Sort of like a few of the MST3000
dvds also have the uncut version of a movie.

I’d think that is unlikely to happen for what is essentially a low-budget, artist financed production. It would greatly increase their production costs to record and edit together an in-studio version and also do it for a live version, but probably would not significantly increase sales enough to justify the expense.

It was a joke using hyperbole to make it funny, which I thought it was. Even dissecting it as that comment does, 40% of the releases does seem like quite a bit, but then, the nature of the films they are using has a lot to do with it.
I heard one of the CT gang mention in an interview that releasing one live and one studio version on the same DVD was under consideration, but later rejected. It is a bit difficult for me to see the screen on these live videos, but then again, I’m old! The audience response has never interfered with my enjoyment (I’ve seen CT live twice).
As for the video,look for our buddy Kent Taylor returning as Dr. Whatever(did he he only plays doctors?)in “Danger on Tiki Island.” Also look for John Ashley (the star of “Attack of the the Eye Creatures”) appearing as the young studly American.
I thought that maybe they would release studio versions of the live DVDs so they could have a regular, more frequent DVD release schedule without having to secure the rights to more movies. I think that would make the people who prefer the studio DVDs happy, but I don’t know if that’s cost effective for their business or not. Plus, Joel seems pretty adamant about sticking with live releases because he thinks they’re better.
Me, my brother and a room full of our friends watched the Alien Factor on DVD recently. It was the first CT Live DVD for us and we all loved it. I was skeptical but as mentioned before, the audience track is mixed down and isn’t intrusive at all IMHO. Nobody in the room complained about the audience laughter once. I’m on board now for the Live discs and definitely plan on buying East Meets Watts and Tiki Island. That said it’d still be nice to get some special features of some kind, or have at least one of the DVDs feature the full pre-show skits, best-of reel, Gruber, Convuluted Man, Josh’s songs, ect.
Oh and for anyone that like me is still way behind on their CT episodes, Alien Factor is hilarious and their best yet IMHO.
Looks like another pretty good CT episode. I won’t be able to get it on the 15th – many of my bills’ payment deadlines fall around the middle of every month – but I will get this soon after!
RE: audiences and ‘canned laughter’.
I have a VHS (dubbed to DVD) of The Making of The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy TV version. In it, they mention that the producers considered having ‘canned laughter’ on it, and showed the scene with Arthur and Ford at the pub, with the laughter. It was terrible!
I will admit to hating ‘canned’ laughs, am more tolerant of live audiences, but prefer ‘studio’ work where there’s no distraction from the film/riffing.
I also have to dig out my unriffed copy of Samson And The Seven Miracles to watch, and possibly sometime in the future, get the CT version.

I don’t care if it’s “canned” laughter or a studio version,I’m going to buy the new release of what CT has to sell.I will support them 100% no matter what.One thing I’ve noticed and believe me,I was skeptical at first with the live dvd’s,the live dvd’s are A WHOLE LOT funnier than the studio versions! The laughter isn’t a distraction and you can hear the riffs and the movie as well..Oh,well,to each his/her own,but they’re missing some pretty funny stuff.I’m just glad that CT keeps putting something out and still touring.Better than nothing at all. :mrgreen:
Saw this presentation in NYC some weeks ago and laughed until I couldn’t breathe.
Will definitely be downloading this next week. Sad to say, I ALREADY own the original movie, Bride of Blood, as part of a 4-disc John Ashley-Philippines movie box!
Count me in the pro-Live DVD side. I was VERY skeptical at first, but the energy of a live show far outstrips the rather sterile presentation of the studio efforts. Seeing the faces of the CTers is a treat and it allows for the occasional visual gag, too.

Aside from the “live” vs. “studio” thing….I do like the video presentation of the live disks much better than the studio disks. I like being able to see the CT crew as opposed to the “shadowrama” set up.
I’m guessing the live format is cheaper to produce, since they’re doing the live shows anyway and can just record one.
I think losing the silhouettes and the visual humor from them, along with losing the sketch segments, is a bit of a minus.
Still, if this format makes it more viable for them to continue to produce DVDs, then I’m all for it! Better these live shows than not getting to see the Titans at all!
I wonder if they’ve considered maybe producing the studio versions, then making those DVD’s available exclusively at the live shows they perform the particular movie at, then releasing them publicly once they’ve moved the live show on to the next movie.
That could drive up DVD sales overall (it would be a great memento to take home) AND ticket sales (how else do you get the movie first?)
Count me as pro-live, they do a good job mixing down the audience as it is much louder in the theater (at least in Seattle last year) and I like the way they use the 16:9 ratio with the movie in the center and the performers on the side. I don’t really miss the sketch segments as I don’t think CT’s sketches have been that great. If they stick to the live DVDs, I’ll keep buying and I hope to see them again live sometime this year.
East Meets Watts was arguably CT’s best DVD to date; however the follow on “Live” performance was so forgettable, I’m spacing its name right now. I’m hoping Tiki is more of the former and less of the latter this time around. We’ll see.

This may be old news but in case nobody has heard, here’s a head’s up: The upcoming CT dvd for Tiki Island will be the first of the titans’ releases to contain a bonus feature, the mini documentary “Between the Riffs”!!
