Excellent shows, both of ’em. And kudos to the CT crew for doing two shows, and two long autograph sessions, in one night. I only regret that when there were about 10 people ahead of us in the first line, we were asked (since we had tix for both shows) to come back to the line after the second show so they wouldn’t be late getting that show started. After the second show, the line was in a different place, and there were 100 people ahead of us. No big deal, but I was tired! Probably not as tired as they were, though!

I have seen the DVD version of Oozing Skull, but not East Meets Watts, so the latter was my favorite for the night. Several nice shout-outs to MST. “Rock climbing! Rock. Climbing.”

Excellent show! I could only stay for the first performance, but “East Meets Watts” was great cheesy ’70s fun. I also appreciated the MST shout-outs, like “Rock Climbing,” and “Watch out for snakes!” The cast was very gracious when I met them in the autograph line, and best of all, I got a picture taken with Joel! It was also gratifying to tell Josh how much I loved “Freaks and Geeks,” which he seemed to appreciate. (Meeting Paul Feig in Ann Arbor a few years back on his “Superstud” book tour was a great experience, too.) So overall, it was a very memorable and enjoyable evening.

My mom and I drove 3 hours to Ann Arbor to see both shows, and we were not disappointed! I had never watched a CT DVD, but being a lifelong Mistie I knew the riffing of whatever bad movie they showed would be top notch–and it was. “East Meets Watts” was such a perfect movie for their treatment, and the hilarious riffing was consistent throughout. For “Oozing Skull” we got to sit much closer to the stage, and I really enjoyed getting to see the CT crew’s expressions as they delivered their lines. Mary Jo would genuinely crack up at other people’s lines, Joel seemed to be so in the moment really enjoying himself, and J. Elvis had such pitch-perfect comedic timing and delivery. Dave “Gruber” Allen did an amazing job as their warm-act, very funny especially before the second show, and when he and J. Elvis did a bit about an ADD radio station I was struck by how stand-up seems to be second nature for him (J. Elvis)–really good stuff.
Also, a note about the crowd:
Before we went in, my mom (a baby boomer) was afraid she would be the oldest person there. There was such a huge cross-section of people, though–plenty of people her age and several senior citizens, many people my age (Gen X, 30’s), some college age people and even a few young kids. Though there are a very few curse words in the CT comments (and the “N” word is dropped many times in the movie dialogue in “East Meets Watts”–yikes), it still really seems to be a good draw for all ages.
Overall, what a great time! I would definitely go see them again!

Both shows were great but I think East meet Watts was a bit better than Oozing Skull. Of course, that was my opinion when I saw both DVDs as well, so I wasn’t really surprised. Oozing Skull was still a good time, but the first half was riffed a lot better than the second. Joel said it was their first time doing OS live. I can understand them wanting to give it a try live but, this movie being their first cinematic titanic effort, I think they should stick with their later, better efforts for live shows in the future.

One thing that WAS better about the second show was the sound. I heard several people comment that they couldn’t make out a couple of the riffers very well in the first show. I too had a hard time making out Trace. I don’t know what they did differently with the mikes in between shows but I had no porblem hearing Trace’s riffs in the second show.

WOW…sounds like I missed a fantastic outing by CT. Some day it’ll be my turn to tell how my first live CT show gave a super performance. {SIGH}

I’m sorry I couldn’t go either. I did see them a few months back, and was pleased. As I have stated before- East meets Watts is awesome. Like many of my favorite MST episodes, I can watch this one over and over.

Wow…just, wow! Great shows. I was able to get to the panel discussion on Thursday too and that was also a lot of fun. A very casual Q&A session that covered some topics a little different than many I’ve heard about in the past. Some real interesting stuff from their early days. As for the movies, East Meets Watts is perhaps my favorite of any of their offerings. I have to admit I think it’s kinda cool that we got to see the first public, live performance of the Oozing Skull (with the only other show being the one for ILM). Please come back to Ann Arbor whenever possible.

Thanks Tom #8- The Economy has roughed me up a bit lately- I just didn’t have the scratch to get down to A2 for the shows, though I only live about 70 miles north, thankfully, I went to Royal Oak in February. The Michigan theater is a gem- during good times I have seen films such as- “The Night of the Hunter” and “Quadrophenia”. Acts I have seen there include- Todd Rundgren, Joe Jackson, Crowded House and Bill Maher.CT is in good company. Ashleys offers some of the best taps in the midwest, and I have drained many a brew there while pumping money into the jukebox. I have fond memories of the Ann Arbor area, living there while managing a record store in Briarwood many years ago. We were located next to the theater, every friday night Rocky Horror showed so it was quite fun.

The Titans tour has been a gift to legions of fans, old and new. For years as my kids grew, every weekend was MST night. We’d start the series out, watch 2 per week in season order. It was fascinating to watch the show and concept evolve from the KTMA days to the crisp riffing we all take for granted. I pick up the tradition, somewhat scatter shot these days- East vs Watts and The Screaming Skull occupied me the last couple of nights.

Thanks for the fine presentation my friend. From where I sit, there’s no better entertainment available on earth than good movie riffing. And there’s nothing better than waking up on a warm July day, pouring some home ground coffee and sharing your find experience. From a guy who grew up loving the school 65 miles to the north of Ann Arbor, I shout out a hearty “Go Blue.”

  10. Both shows were excellent! Though after so long watching two stinkbombs back to back starts to wear on you. Oozing skull is far more hilarious live than on dvd- it was like they had 2 more years to think about it and riff it again. It was cool to meet up with a group of fans there. Meeting the Titans was cool as well. I echo mst3ktemple… come back to ann arbor!

I loved both shows. I had an opportunity to slightly bother Joel and Trace outside the theater, which was terrific. I’d never seen any CT before, but it was great to see them all in person and on top of their game. Oozing Skull is one ****ty movie!
