First ShoutFactory Title Up at Amazon

The Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary Edition DVD box set has been posted for preorder at Amazon. The release date for this DVD box set is October 28. Our sources at ShoutFactory tell us it is “a lavishly packaged 4-DVD box set with lots of bonus content.” They are not announcing what episodes are on it yet–that should come at Comic Con.

Stay tuned!

Where are you fellers getting this $70 price from? Amazon sez it’s $48.99 (so what’s the plobrem?)

Lessee…I’m going to take a stab at predicting what the content will be too….

    Invasion USA
    Robot Monster
    The City Limits
Attack of The The Eye Creatures

Bonus material; ASCII versions of KTMA 1-4

Al Crawford : Same thoughts here. Riffing off a discussion somewhere else around here, how about:

    1 from KTMA or Season 1 ( Joel / Erhardt )
1 from the Joel / Frank years.
    1 from Comedy Mike
    1 from Scifi Mike

    or maybe

    First Episode 101 ( Crawling Eye )
Turkey Day Episode ( 701TD Night of the Blood Beast in situ )
Last Comedy Episode ( Laserblast, apparently popular around here :)
    Last Episode ( Diabolik )

But this list is 3:1 Mike versus Joel. Swap out Turkey day for a KTMA ep ? or maybe 201 Rocketship XM ( first Frank, first Kevin as Tom )

but really, as long as they are all new to DVD and prepped and packaged well, it’s all good.

Well I guess i can try the internet again. Another fear that i have is The casual viewer Seeing the price on the rhino dvd and seeing the price on the shout factory dvd. And surely for the same amount of episodes people would buy the rhino dvd instead.

How exciting, a new box set! I won’t be pre-ordering until I’ve worked out whether or not I’m moving out of state this summer. I’d hate to pay $50 to give it to the tenants who move here after we leave!

I’m not too worked up about the price increase. Everyone is having to raise their prices lately, so this doesn’t really surprise me.

Someone at Shout! must have read my complaint on one of the discussion threads…I was wondering when some announcement would be made.

I agree with those who want to wait until they know which titles will be on this set. For myself, I’ll probably get the set at some point, but in this day in age, money is tight and priorities are in effect, so it will all depend on how quickly I want these episodes in my collection. Like I mentioned when the news first broke about Shout!, my curiousity lies mostly with how Shout! will package these sets. I keep reading about these “thin packs” and picture those bargain-bin DVDs you find in Wal-Mart for a dollar and don’t play after one viewing.

As for the pricing…c’mon people, was this really a shock? It’s all economics; everything is going up in prices these days, why would this be any exception? If Shout! improves on where Rhino left off (and granted, there was room for that), I think most of us will gladly part with a few extra dollars to get the upgraded product.

The episodes I’d like to see would include Attack of the the Eye Creatures, Santa Claus, Viking Women and the Sea Serpent (the only season 3 ep I’ve never seen), and any of the season 1 ep not shown during the ’95 Turkey Day marathon.

Seriously, is it actually possible that any fan of the show wouldn’t buy this set if there were certain episodes on it?

Frankly, even if it contained all four of my least favorite episodes in the one set, I’d still buy it. If it went out of print after a while and I didn’t have it, I’d be quite annoyed regardless of the episodes contained therein.

There aren’t a lot of shows I’d say this about, but when it comes to MST3K, I’ll buy every set regardless of which episodes are on it. I’m just happier about it when my favorites make it to DVD sooner rather than later, but I buy them all without hesitation.

I’ll buy it regardless of the Episodes but I am a little cheesed at how long it has taken. We were promised a Set by early summer not a list of titles in early summer with a set to follow in mid Fall. C’mon shout Factory we were all singing your praises when you overthrew Rhino…make us proud. Speed up the process and deliver excellent quality. That’s all we ask!!!!!!!!!!

I would have to agree with the assumption of previous posters where they suggest that the possible reason of the higher cost is due to having to pay more to acquire rights. Since this is a 20th anniversary set, one would expect the cream of the crop to be represented. I’m guessing the set will be split between Joel and Mike, with Mike’s episodes being Laserblast and Soultaker.

SF was founded by the co-founder of Rhino and two former Rhino executives. Take that bit of info as you will.

Don’t worry, there’s nothing wrong with “thin packs,” it’s just a smaller box for individual dvds that are pacaged into one box. Anime series are often collected into thin pack sets, I have several, and they all work fine.

  16. Well, I’m in — as Bob says, any fan will want any episodes released on DVD.

Hey, I *have* all the MST3K episodes (and probably in as good a condition as anyone can outside of the commercial releases) and I’m still excited to get new DVDs. While it’s almost impossible to improve on the quality of my Sci-fi episodes, I’d still buy those. I want to support these getting released by anyone, in any way I can.

As for packaging — I don’t really care at all. I keep all my MST3K discs in one big disc holder anyway (is there anyone who really has the space in their house for 200 or so discs devoted to just one show?). My blu-ray collection is far more important to have out — MST3K is where I want to open up the holder and grab the next one (actually, I’ve converted all of them to MPEG4 so I can watch them on Apple TV, TiVo and my iPhone anyway).

I was hoping they would release a single disc every month instead of the box sets. Then the wait wouldn’t be so long and I wouldn’t have to sell my body to buy it.

Dan #67 – Not a bad idea. In fact, I got my first MST3K dose from Columbia House that sent one VHS per month. It was Heaven! Although I’ve also heard SF say that once the MST3K ball got rolling it would be moving quite fast. I’m hoping that means four sets per year instead of two.

If rights to certain landmark MST3K episodes means a slightly higher DVD set price, then let’s do it! I DO draw the line somewhere, though.

Speaking of Shout Factory…what happened to The Film Crew? Their website appears to be gone now, no more eps from them?

DT- yes, that is the case. See, Film Crew was initially supposed to be released by Rhino but Jim Mallon put the kabash on it because he thought it would interfere with sales of MST dvd’s. After the four episodes had been made and the set had been torn down, Shout! Factory picked up the episodes and released them. However, by this time Mike, Bill and Kevin were already onto “Rifftrax” so they decided not to do anymore Film Crew episodes. If they had, I’m sure by now Mallon would have strong-armed Shout! Factory into dropping them anyway now that they have MST.

I will now throw in my two cents about the episode speculation:

Attack Of The Eye Creatures (first CC episode)
    Lazerblast (last CC episode)
Soultaker (Joel and Frank reunion episode)
    Danger: Diabolik (last Sci-Fi episode)

By the way, I got the new Entertainment Weekly magazine and MST made their top 100 “new classic” TV shows of the past 25 years. Neato!

By the way, anyone complaining about paying more money for the new MST sets apparently hasn’t bought any Family Guy boxed sets. $40 for HALF a season? It’s ridiculous. But with MST, you’re not just getting an episode of the show, you’re getting an entire movie. And single movies- even bad ones- go for around $20 a pop. So the sets are pretty much correctly priced. Don’t forget- Shout! and Rhino didn’t get the rights to the movies in the episodes for FREE…

The Rhino boxed sets were all in the $30-40 dollar range at Half.com and Ebay, and deep discount.com too. I even paid under $30 for several of them.

Anybody paying more than that is just too damn lazy to look around, or just likes to pay lots more than they need to.

Yes, they retailed at $59.00, but anyone with half a brain went to the above mentioned sites and bought them.
