First ShoutFactory Title Up at Amazon

The Mystery Science Theater 3000: 20th Anniversary Edition DVD box set has been posted for preorder at Amazon. The release date for this DVD box set is October 28. Our sources at ShoutFactory tell us it is “a lavishly packaged 4-DVD box set with lots of bonus content.” They are not announcing what episodes are on it yet–that should come at Comic Con.

Stay tuned!

I just placed my Pre-order (by going through the above link naturally). I don’t remember the Rhino box sets costing this much though? Weren’t they usually in the $40 range?

Shout Factory has done some wonderful DVD work with Home Movies and Freaks & Geeks (menu interface design, supplemental content, and overall packaging). I can’t wait to see what they’ve got in store for MST3K. I’d be ready to pre-order this on faith in the company.

  4. Rhino’s box sets were usually $59.99, though of course with Amazon’s perpetual sale prices the figures are skewed somewhat. A quick search shows a price range from $36.99 to $53.99, so this sale price of $48.99 seems reasonable. I’ll preorder it, and have faith that they won’t bundle any already-released episodes, because Shout! Factory seems to be a pretty cool bunch in general.

I can’t wait till the 28th of October. Hopefully they picked a good monster movie in honor of Halloween.

At that price, Joel better be included in the box set. Not a Joel episode, but the actual person! That is a bit steep… of course, it is hard to tell since the price of everything has increased since the last complete box set came out.

I’ll get it, but it won’t be from Amazon. Hopefully Overstock or Deepdiscount will have it for cheaper.

Deepdiscount or half.com always has stuff cheaper than amazon. Or even independent amazon.com merchants. There’s a book I want that amazon sells for $45 but the merchants all have it (new) for $26. In any event I’ll wait till I know what is on the blasted thing before ordering.

Now, I remember reading some speculation on this site that one of the Shout! Factory titles would be Laserblast.

Has this been confirmed at all? (I understand there is no official announcement until next month.)

IMO, if they were going to create a themed box set, The Crawling Eye, Laserblast, Revenge of the Creature and Diabolik would make sense, assuming the aforementioned Laserblast speculation I commented on.

Yet I know on Ward E they have that list that compiles the possibility of particular episodes being officially produced. On that list, Revenge of the Creature and Diabolik were both considered unlikely (forgetting the particular grading for each.)

I’d be interested to hear everybody’s thoughts on the matter.

Pardon my skepticism, but I won’t be preordering until I get an episode/bonus list. Not that I’m not thrilled to the point of explosion that the Shout! ball is finally rolling  , but, well, has Shout! guaranteed that there won’t be repeats of Rhino episodes and can we take that promise to the bank? And it says four DVD’s but is that four episodes or three episodes and one bonus content DVD? I’m just not that familiar with Shout!.

  10. GizmonicTemp says:

P.S. And if it’s going to be the “20th Anniversary Edition” why not make it bigger than four DVD’s? Certainly there are more than four unreleased episodes that Shout! has rights to to make this first box set just rock my freakin’ face off.

Or am I just being too protective?

Hey, maybe we’re all in for a treat and each disc has multiple episodes (without loss of audio/visual quality).

After seeing what happened with Vol. 9 & 10 (as well as the Giant Gila Monster single disk) I make sure to pre-order whenever possible. I would highly doubt Shout would include any eps that have already been released, I can’t imagine Rhino allowing that to happen? (of course that being said look at Rhino re-releasing Manos on DVD twice??)

FINALLY! Personally, I’d like to see more titles from the survey of favorites conducted a while back. And if they’re smart, Shout! will include two Joel episodes and two Mike episodes to keep everyone happy!

WaffleTron #11 – You’d be getting into 4000 Mbps territory which would have quality fanatics storming the Shout! gates.

  16. Diamond Joe says:

Mike (#8)’s list would be nice. I can picture extras like “Birth of Best Brains” from the Scrapbook for 101, the Sci-Fi special (was that one “This Is MST3K”?) for 801, and (perhaps an edited version of) “The Last Dance– RAW!” for 1013. If any of them aren’t available, the best pool, historically, to choose from would be Rocketship X-M, Samson vs. the Vampire Women, and Soultaker. And if they could work out the rights, any KTMA, especially from K00-03, would be fantastic.

B Ward from Shout! Factory has already answered or eluded to the answers of most to these questions. It WILL be four episodes on four dvds in four slim cases. He also took exception to the fact that someone assumed that he had hinted that Laserblast would be one of the episodes, so I wouldn’t expect that one to be included.

I will definitely pre-order this one from somewhere cheap, because that is the ONLY reason I own the original version of Vol. 10… Shout! has done an excellent job with everything they have touched including SCTV, Freaks & Geeks, and Home Movies. I think that they are the ideal company to handle MST3k, because as they say, they are fans and were excited to get the rights to this great show… but don’t expect miracles like KTMA full episodes showing up because that is a decision by Jim and all involved. THEY don’t care for the KTMA episodes, regardless of the fans desire to see them and that is why they will never see the light of day (beyond downloading them). I would like to see some of the stuff from RAW and others included and think that is a greater possibility. It should be pretty special though and I think it will be a great indication as to what we should expect from Shout!

  18. I agree. Go the extra mile(s) and get a KTMA out there if it is any way possible. Heck, *any* KTMA on legitimate release would be incredible.

I also agree that the price seems a bit steep. Rhino had kind of settled into a MSRP that translated into an affordable cost (if pricey compared to most other shows). A $10 uptick in the MSRP will translate into $6 – $8 extra out of pocket.

SIRHAMHAT #17 – Okay. Thanks for the info. “Funny you should mention that…”

I agree that the KTMA episodes will never see anything but the inside of the vault.

I’m hoping that the “Vol 9&10” days are over.

    Should be good news.
Three things I would like to see on it.
1.) MST Scapbook as an extra.
2.) Joel and Trace interviewed at length (like they did with Mike and Kevin earlier), or better yet, Joel, Trace, Josh and Frank.
3.) No more screwups like bad mastering or poor quality copies of episodes. There are a number of fine quality episodes to dub over and in this day and age, no excuse for us to get bad video or audio; especially, at these prices.

70 dollars    I’m not paying that for 4 thin pack dvds. Thats a rip off. If anything it should be cheaper than the rhino dvds. It should only be 40.00 dollars. They better have footage of moses parting the red sea on it. But if its a brian ward dvd Its probably gonna cut away to useless footage. (hint buy any Sonic the hedgehog dvd and watch the extra features and you will know what i mean)

On an unreleated note B. Ward has confirmed that the rights to 4 movies were locked down. I can only assume that means 1 ep per disc. No complaint here.

If they somehow got one of the Sandy Frank movies, why not include the KTMA version as a bonus?

The Brains didn’t seem to care much for the Comedy Channel era either, and we got a few out of Rhino anyway.

  27. Jason says:

Shout! has already said on their forums that they won’t re-release any episodes already done by Rhino, so there is no need to worry that they will. As for the price, it is a bit steep. I hope that this means they licensed a few of the more expensive titles from Paramount or MGM? I’d love to see Robot Holocaust on this set.

I think the 4 eps will be
    Crawling Eye
    Rocketship XM
Laserblast (this is the one being heavily rumored)
    Soultaker
(my other guess would be Revenge of the Creature or Diabolik for a scifi pic)
I think that MST3K Scrapbook, maybe the pilot with Green Slime and some KTMA should be included and just might,I think this is going to be a HUMONGOUS set.
    Pre-order it ?
Hell yeah ! Money is no object for my favorite TV show..
I met Joel in San Jose :) !!

  29. WouldntYouLikeToKnow says:

With something as special as a 20th anniversary package, I think there should be one or two more episodes than the usual four, but I’m probably being too greedy/picky. I agree that at some point some KTMA episodes should be released, some of them can be quite funny. Unfortunately, I really doubt they will see the light of day. Anyways, I’m looking forward to see what Shout! can do with this series. Also, to everyone complaining about the steep Amazon price, just keep in mind that they won’t be the only retailer selling this set. Best Buy might end up being the best option.

FINALLY some sort of news on this… now we have to wait until October 28th… good for the wallet, bad for the teeth (due to oversalivation, ‘natch). Hooray for the slim packs!

I will not be pre-ordering anything, especially at that price. I’m going to wait to see which episodes are released and then (depending upon my financial situation) make a decision on the purchase. I very seriously doubt they will run into the same rights issues that Rhino did.

Ok, I can’t give out info, but I was informed what will be on the set from a key source. I don’t think there will be a lot of joy–instead, there will be a nashing of teeth.

I love Shout Factory’s work, but I think this indicates a problem on the ship. Luckily, you will be able to cancel preorders once the announcement is made.

I wish someone would release Santa Claus–it is public domain and one of the best MST episodes.

Just a side note, I messaged the Shout! profile on MySpace and s/he informed me there WILL be cameras rolling for the ComiCon panel. Good things should be coming!

And here’s hoping for Soultaker and some kicking extras. Seems what Shout is known for.

Why would we be disappointed? Is it a box of poop instead of MST3K DVDs?

  39. Matty-O says:

Well, there’s fifty bucks well spent… I wonder what I bought? Not that I would have given any more thought about making the pre-order had I been better informed given the Volume 10 debacle that almost burned me, (was able to get that one off eBay just before the prices sky-rocketed).

As such, my 100% blind guess (more of a wish-list, really) is that the 4 titles will be:
    Final Sacrifice
    Agent for HARM
    It Lives By Night
and I Was A Teenage Werewolf

I honestly dont care what the shows are, I mean I ones Id like to see more than others, but Im still willing to spend the money to get it because I am a fan & support MST, and thank you VISA :)
I do want the Crawling Eye to be on this set since it is the first CC show, but I like the movie as well, the same for Rocketship XM, it is key episode and I like this episode, but Id settle for Jungle Goddess or a Gamera title…
This is an exciting time for all of us I would think since maybe now we will get episodes that used to be impossible to get…can you imagine Diabolik on this set ?? If Shout talks to Paramount, it can happen, same goes for those Universal titles, th possibilities I feel have changed in terms of what will get released and I think ultimately we will all be happy as the sets could have some of us fans most wanted episodes..its a great feeling like a new door is opening up..

Everyone seems to be forgetting that Shout! Factory originally said they’d be RELEASING the first set in June, not ANNOUNCING the first set in June. Now we have to wait until October? That sucks! What happened to the promise that they’d be releasing episodes on a more regular basis than Rhino did? It will be around 10 months from the time Shout! announced they’d gotten the licence to release MST episodes to the actual first release!

  50. Al Crawford says:

It seems to be that all the people listing “the episodes I’d like on the set” and then proceeding to list four Sci-Fi Channel episodes don’t seem to have take into the account that this is a *20th Anniversary* set.

I’m not even going to hazard guesses on individual shows, but I’m going to guess it’ll either try to be representative of the whole 20 years (well, sort of – the choice is somewhat limited for the last five). Since 10 seasons doesn’t divide up too neatly, I’m guessing we’re gonna get two Joel and two Mike DVDs, and that the higher cost might be a reflection of Shout having had to pay a bit more to re-acquire the rights to use the movies. Assuming no re-issues, that’s got the potential to be a very nice set.

Also, for all we know the box, which is pretty much guaranteed good sales due to it being the 20th Anniversary Box Set, might also be partly acting as a fundraiser to help regain the rights to more of the good stuff – how many shows would acquiring full Sandy Frank rights make potentially available?

    Al
