I assume you’re joking but Tor.COM is for Tor the fantasy/SciFi book publisher that just relaunched their web site with a lot of good content, now including the MST3K interviews….

You’ll have to excuse Sampo. He likes to assume that everything is devoted to Tor Johnson.

Loui, I have to agree with you…I had to keep clicking forward just to get past her annoying uh, ers, ehs! A first grader could have gotten through those questions easier!

Joel: “You guys talking about Robots?”

Yeah, the interviewer tries really hard to sound very intelligent when asking questions about the intimidating image of robots. At least her nutso questions spawn hilarious answers from the Brains. Kudos to them for rolling with it all.

Yes, she way over-engineered her questions, but she meant well. “Totemic in the geek community” is a pretty sweet line, but out of place in the presence of the cowtown puppeteers.

Lame as it was, I definitely would have liked to hear more. Mallon seemed almost human!

Does aybody else think the interviewer sounded like MJP ? Maybe they grew up in the same town or something…

Yeah, I still think she meant to do a fun, informative interview. It was SDCC, after all. If you can’t come across as nerdy there, where can you? Also, in that hotel room setting, with limited time to ask questions and do a decent job, I’d have probably sounded like I’d had a lobotomy five minutes prior.

So the site if not dedicated to Tor Johnson?!!! I was hoping for closeup shots of Tor wetting himself.

Is it my copy of the file, or did part two get really choppy and artifacty towards the end (the Joel portion)? Also, my copy seems to have been backlit, making the visibility of the subjects very difficult – I think I need a new modem or something…

I’m confused. I thought there was thing big feud between Jim Mallon and well… everyone. Did they make up? I never thought there was bad blood between the Titanic folks and the Rifftrax folks … but I thought they were both upset with Jim.

Didn’t Jim put the kaibosh on a reunion last year? And hasn’t Joel been publicly saying for a while now that Jim was the real reason he left MST?

To be clear, I want to know that all these people get along (even if not friends) I just thought the rift with Mallon was pretty deep.

Slightly off topic question : Mallon owns/controls the MST3K intellectual property. Is it a 100% share ? Do the other players have a non-controlling piece of the action ? Did their original compensation packages include a piece of the back end ? Joel must have had an ownership stake at the beginning, was he ‘bought out’ when he left ?

The possibility that the non-Mallons are still in the revenue stream might explain why people seem to be making nice.

It’s frustrating to see Crow just sitting there lifeless. I wish he’d start talking and answering questions.

Well, I’m, for one, glad that site is not dedicated to Tor Johnson. He deserves better.

“Over-engineered”? This is awful. It’s that Chris Farley SNL interview sketch with the Charlie Rose filter on. Jim cuts her off at one point to ask *WHAT* her question is – less an interview than an odd conversation.

Wally Shawn would have blown off dinner with her.

Really! I had to con my way in by pretending to be part of the film crew. Don’t let anyone say we never sacrifice anything for our stories…

(Though I have to admit the idea of her reviewing the upcoming box set – which she’ll be getting a review copy, just thought I’d mention – appeals for all of the wrong reasons.)

Marquis – It’s not just you; the second part of the interview clearly has sound problems, but I didn’t see any backlighting.

  16. Marquis de Sade says:

The backlighting portion of my comment was pure sarcasm – It’s hard to see their faces. Whoever is old enough to be trusted to hold a camera should be old enough to know that you need to illuminate your subject from the front, not the rear.

    Re Medium-petitie’s (7) commment.

Yeah, it could be MJP…she was great at parodying certain types of annoying women, and would do a great job playing an annoying, geeky, verbose, and pretentious sci-fi site interviewer.

yeah, Jim has control but Joel, Kevin, and Trace all get royalties as they each owned a part of Best Brains.

Or maybe they’re just honestly nice people (all of them) with a difference of opinion that doesn’t prevent them from engaging in activities together in a friendly manner?

    Just a thought.

Phil ( #20 ) Yes, of course, quite possible. I’m just riffing off of all the talk about the alleged ‘big feud’ & ‘bad blood’ between Mallon and the non-Mallonites.

I have no direct knowledge either way… but if there are no seething inter-personal ( or inter-personnel!) tensions, then there is nothing to explain re: their ability to work together.

Or, if there are/were, they may have already slayed those dragons in the fullness of time, or they’re burying the hatchet all the way to the bank.

  22. Krasner says:

Personally, I appreciated how Jim, Joel and Trace went to great lengths to save the interview.

Although she did give them the opportunity to finally weigh in on two very important issues that have been at the forefront of my mind:

    1. The effect of the MST characters and efforts to soften the public image of robots (for which credit is long overdue.)

    2. The question of reconciling the ability of humans to accept robots as our friends juxtaposed against the undercurrent concerns that robots may be positioning themselves for some sort of predominance in this culture… or something.

I appreciated the interview for all of the wrong reasons. I thought it was fun watching the guys pretend to ponder (a.k.a. give a crap about) robot integration into modern culture. Trace is not a good faker. Good stuff.
