You Never Know Where the Show Will Turn Up…

MST3K popped up on the Web sites of two unlikely publications today: Forbes (where, as you’ll see in the comments, I helped straighten out some confusion) and Out (not that there’s anything wrong with it!).

Didn’t Servo once come within a whisker of marrying Crow?

I always thought Tom Servo was a robosexual.

It didn’t have a Maidenform bra on, did it?

I think the clip that Out used is wrong. They really should have used the one with the wedding to Crow. How can call Servo gay when asks both Gypsy and Magic Voice to make out?

One could site Servo’s love of wearing dresses, but what else can he wear with a body like that?

Overall, he’s just an innocent robot without sexuality.

So ….. those were two interesting media references. Isn’t funny that shows from that era on the Comedy channel and SCI FI are largely forgotten?

  6. I always thought Crow was the more “bent” of the Bots.
During the Bill Corbett era he cross-dressed as a Bellerian (Space Mutiny), a furry (the Bear in Jack Frost), and as a go-go dancer (Girl With Gold Boots), which Servo enjoys, to Mike’s great dismay. “Shake your peach cobbler baby, good times!”

Wait, didn’t Tom want to make out with Gypsy a minute later? I know, I know….expecting logic from someone who talked about Small Wonder’s VICI with a hint of seriousness.

    Oh well. God Bless Twiki.

No Hedonismbot on ‘Out’s’ list? Oh, for shame… but yeah… I agree that the Servo/Crow marraige segments would have been a better choice.

I didn’t expect to see the word “embiggen” used at Forbes.com. The influence of The Simpsons is truly incalcuable.

@ Noel, I guess even the readers of Out aren’t ready for Hedonismbot. Maybe it’s the industrial-grade-sandpaper-nipples thing. But what about Gender Bender? Out’s just not ready for robosexuality…

“Don’t be fooled by Twiki’s small stature. Here, the cunning robot tries to slip Buck a date rape pill, and is clearly miffed by Buck’s interest in the bad lady in the bikini.”

I think Servo’s there mostly because it’s impossible to resist including the Bots in any list of robots.

This whole “Out” thing totally ignores all the times that both Bots are clearly titillated by women in bikinis, women implied to be undressing, the visibility of underwear, etc, while also expressing repulsion for any time a guy’s batch/area/etc is coming at them or they see tiny upsetting shorts.

There are exceptions in both directions, so either the Bots a) are bipolar-bisexual and flip around at random, or b) are intrigued by sexuality but don’t really fully understand it, since it’s not part of their nature, they’d never been to Earth, and thus had to rely on movies and secondhand descriptions.

Which, to me, for as much as the writers were just going for whatever joke stood out at them, paints a more complex and nuanced picture of the character’s personalities than slapping human labels on them. It blends perfectly with the implied reality of life on the SoL.

    Sampo,
I love that you were just like “That’s not right, let me just give Kevin Murphy a call” on the Forbes article. I lol’d.

    Chuck,

What stuck more out to me is the 39 minutes between the posting of the article and Sampo getting a response from Kevin.

Out magazine really needs a hobby. Did anyone go further into the article? “The robot cops from THX 1138 because they have slim hips” and Johnny 5 from Short Circuit… Wow. Not everything is gay, guys.

Let’s not forget the time Crow and Tom performed some, um, “Mid-air refueling.”

  15. MikeK says:

Yeah, but Crow put his fuel hose into Servo’s fuel receptacle, as God intended. So that one doesn’t count. ;-)
