Weekend Discussion Thread: MST3K Earworms

If you’re unfamiliar with the term, I’m not talking Wrath of Khan here. An “earworm” is an irritatingly catchy tune that gets stuck in your head, and you find yourself humming it, without even thinking about it. I first thought about this a few weeks ago when I could not get this eight bars out of my head.

And more recently, after the episode guide entry for “King Dinosaur,” I’ve been humming the “Joey the lemur” song over and over. Yikes! So, has any bit of music, either from a MSTed movie or from a host segment, gotten stuck in your head?

@99 “Also, the MST Love Theme is one of the best pieces of music ever written. So melancholy, so good. ”

This is true. I’m thinking of requesting that it be used as the exit music to my funeral (many, many, many years from now, of course).

I have to throw in ‘Who? Who will I kill?’ from Frank’s last show, Samson vs the Vampires. I sang it under my breath walking down the hall at work, I thought, and a few co-workers seemed to pick up their pace.

I’ve always adored the theme and accompanying soundtrack to The Girl In Lover’s Lane. KevTom nails the vocal.

Rex Dart-Eskimo Spy! or When I Held Your Brain In My Arms, Slow the Plot Down, or To Earth for my HS songs. As far as in-movie songs Are You Happy In Your Work from I Accuse My Parents is the only one that leaps to mind. Does your morning menu really send you on your way? Hmmmmm?

Man, I ACCUSE MY PARENTS is one of my top five episodes and every time I watch it “Are You Happy In Your Work” just lingers for days.

“And are you aglow? The chic chapeau…”

Also every time I watch MITCHELL, “It’s Not For Me To Say” takes a while to shake–not that I really mind.

After I watch Hobgoblins I always get “Hey everybody, it’s the 80’s, do a lot of coke and vote for Ronald Reagan” bouncing around my head for extended periods. To the point where I have to sing it 5-10 times out loud to dislodge it from my brain. Thanks, MIKE!

I’ve always been partial to that big-bass/suggestive rhythm of Jack Nitzsche’s song that is called ‘The Last Race.’ It is the main theme and underlying current of giant teen takeover in ‘Village of the Giants.’ There’s something very sensual about that rhythm, to the point that another fan (RIP D.C., you were the first big VOTG fan before me) made an mp3 of the VOTG title track, where it now resides on my iPhone.

I’ll also plug the fact that I managed to reach Mike Clifford who was also in VOTG, and he recently sent me the full copies of the songs Marianne (of which we only heard about 20-30 seconds of in the film), and Nothing can stand in my Way (the credited but never heard second song he did for the film). I’m putting together some info on Mike at my VOTG page, and can’t wait to add them in to be listened to by fans.

Oooh, what about “Ace of Spades” by Motorhead or the two tunes from Girlschool (“C’mon Let’s Got” and “Future Flash”) from Zombie Nightmare. Rock on man! (Mike’s band “Sex Factory” was already opening for Motorhead when he bought it in the alternate timeline created by Crow in “Time Chasers”)
