Weekend Discussion Thread: MST3K EarwormsIf you’re unfamiliar with the term, I’m not talking Wrath of Khan here. An “earworm” is an irritatingly catchy tune that gets stuck in your head, and you find yourself humming it, without even thinking about it. I first thought about this a few weeks ago when I could not get this eight bars out of my head.

Whenever I watch TEENAGE STRANGLER, I share brainspace for the next few days with “Yipes Stripes” and its minor-key variations used throughout the film. It’s not bad, really, y’know — the music may be the best part of that film. Which, of course, isn’t saying much.
The background music for the Droppy the Water Droplet segment gets stuck in my head all the time. And Pearl’s rendition of the Loving Lovers song. And ditto Where Oh Werewolf. And the incomprehensible song from Pod People, both the movie version and Joel and the Bots version (it stinks!)

And to a lesser degree, “Shine Your Love” from Angel’s Revenge. Got stuck in my head for a bit but not annoying enough to make me look for a gun.
Dammit! Now they’re both stuck in my head as some bizarre medley!
Wild Rebels- The Birdwatchers- Can I Do It?, I get my kicks with that song
The two themes that get played over and over in DANGER! DEATH RAY! The first I’ll call “Ping” (Servo: “ping,” followed by Da-Da-Da-Da-Da-Da Da Da), and the second I’ll refer to as the sixties soul-jazz Blue Note ripoff tune (complete with funky drumming) that prompts Mike, Servo, and Crow to sing/growl “Watermelon Man” (as in Herbie Hancock) at regular intervals. I actually LIKE this music, but whenever we watch the episode it stays with us for DAYS at a time (my wife and I sing it to one another over dinner, for example).
The Pumaman theme has been stuck in my head since yesterday, but as I read through this discussion, it’s alternating with “He TRIIIIED to kill me with a forklift!” and “Idiot Control Now!”
I just get obsessed with songs that have a lot of intricate wordplay and go very fast. Two of my favorite songs of all time are “Subteranean Homesick Blues” by Bob Dylan (which I’ve memorized) and “One Week” by Barenaked Ladies (which I haven’t, but wish I have — poor pathetic soul that I am). With that in mind, I endlessly listened to “Tubular, Boobular Joy” OBSESSIVELY when I got the first Clowns in the Sky cd until I had that sucker memorized. I don’t think I can remember all the words now, but whenever I think of that song I just can’t help but try to put all the words together. Darn! Here comes another wasted afternoon! :pain:

Crow’s little tune he’s humming in Monster a Go-go before Gypsy tells him she doesn’t get him. “Hum de dee hee hee hoo-a hoo-a.” Gets into my head quite frequently.
“When Loving Lovers Love” gets stuck in an infinite loop for days when I watch Overdrawn, and drives me to hit the ibuprofen. In fact, it’s stuck there now because of this topic – thanks for nothin’, Sampo!
From the movies themselves, I have to concur with others here – Idiot Control Now can go through my head for a couple of days, and it’s really obnoxious. The set played by the Del-Airs in Horror at Party Beach can get stuck there, too, though that’s OK – at least they’re fun songs.
Also, @18, I had the same thing with “Three Little Words” – excruciating!

Tom Servo’s mini-mashup of ’80s songs that he sings over the credits of Space Mutiny comes to mind.

For some reason the “You’ll look better washed in Woolite” Frank was singing as he was sorting laundry was rolling thru my head. Also Frank singing the “Sing when I sing, sing when I sing..” from the Giant Gila Monster…

Definitely “Rock Candy Baby” from Daddy-O and then, obviously, “Hike Up Your Pants”. Actually, not a bad song at all.
Oh, and the Mads’ heavy rock version of the “Gamera” song. Whilst driving, I often just start screaming “Gamera”! People tend to let me merge in front of them more easily after they see me doing that.

I constantly find myself singing this when waiting or doing something mindless: The “Bah-ba-ba-bahhh” song from The Starfighters. I don’t know why, but it’s been stuck in my head for at least 10-12 years now. Maybe it’s Tom’s catchy version as he refuels Crow that gets me.
Also from HOBGOBLINS – the catchy Hobgoblins song “lip’synched” during the host segment with the Mike, Crow, & Tom cutouts.
It’s as good as the tunes from Club Scum house band.

I second Hike Up your Pants from Daddy-O. There’s a lyric about wearing your belt buckle to your side and I remember that fad, mostly dopey greasers.
