Broadcasting from the Belcourt again this year. Fathom’s page isn’t live yet so we can’t link to it. But expect a never-before-seen riff, a new short, and more hilarious antics from the guys.

Tickets on sale from Fathom Events soon! (Times will vary by time zone.)

The “musical” version of this movie is just plain bizarre, and funny on its own. Looks like they’re riffing the original, which I haven’t seen yet. So either way it’s a funny movie!

I can’t wait for this. Their last live show was The House on Haunted Hill last Halloween, which come to think of it was a while ago now. Hopefully they will do at least one more live show this year as well, maybe another Halloween show (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD!!!!)or another Christmas one (ICE CREAM BUNNY!!). I’m also hoping they might do the live performance itself somewhere else for once too. Doing them in San Diego makes sense as that’s where Rifftrax headquarters is located, but why do all the other ones, including this new one, have to be in Nashville? If they are going to be traveling anyway how about spreading the love around a little bit more? I really love going to these live shows, but I’d also love to get the chance to see Rifftrax LIVE live, without having to travel hundreds or thousands of miles that is.

  11. As usual, my wife and I will be there (well, at the closest Fanthom events theater, which for us is about an hour away). I’m really glad we’re finally getting this, and I do hope we can get a video release of it sometime before Christmas as well (which I’ll also buy) so I can show it to friends who can’t make middle-of-the-week events.

To me this is the live event I’m most looking forward to — while the Christmas shorts one was nice, it WAS shorts. This is the first time RT has done live a full-length movie they had not done previously and that makes it special indeed.

  12. @7 The production company that we use is based in Nashville, and after doing two shows at the Belcourt the guys really like the venue & the crowd there. Nashville just plain works for us.

    I will so be there.

The Rifftrax live broadcasts are so much fun, convenient, inexpensive — really a wonderful treat. The only downside is sometimes laughing so hard I can’t breathe.

I just hope they don’t wait too long afterwards to release the DVD of the event!

  14. CK2 says:

@12 Well, I guess that’s nice it’s convenient for everyone at RT, but it kind of seems like a little slap to the face for all the rest of us who would really like to meet the gang and don’t live in California or Tennessee. I mean, it is us loyal fans who keep buying their riffs, so it would be great to know that they would be willing to at least maybe hit the Wizard World circuit one year or something rather than only do live appearances at the two places that are convenient for them, and forget the rest of the country. I just say this as someone who is a huge fan and just really wants to meet the guys after watching them for years from MST3K to the Film Crew to Rifftrax. And while someone pointed out that if they did tour a lot like Cinematic Titanic we wouldn’t get as many DVDs to buy, at least RT could just for one summer go out and meet the fans. They could hit the major cities in less than a month! Even just a couple of weeks! Cinematic Titanic seems to appreciate meeting the fans, it would be awesome if Rifftrax could do just a little bit of that as well.

  15. John R. Ellis says:

Somehow, I doubt the reason is “they do not care about the fans”.

Regardless, very much looking forward to the show. Last summer’s show was a hoot. Hoping the new short is as hilarious as the grass one. *grin*

    @CK2,

I prefer this method. I’m able to drive to a movie theater and see a live show. I wouldn’t be able to do that if Rifftrax toured like CT does.

@John R. Ellis: I know it’s not because they don’t care about the fans, but let’s spread the love around! Just a little. I just so badly want to meet them, that to hear it’s because it just plain works for them to do the same places over and over, kind of got to me. But I understand there are a lot of logistics and expenses involved in broadcasting nationwide.

@Laura: With as many live shows as CT does, that would be a lot of Mythbusters you had have to choose between! I tease. But I have to wonder, is watching a broadcast really the same as attending a live show? For me, it’s not. It’s a movie on a movie screen. It could have been filmed a week earlier for all I know. I know it’s not, I feel the same way about “live” tv as well.

But the bottom line is, I just want the fans to get a chance to meet these awesomely hilarious guys that have brought so much laughter and joy to all of us. Is that so wrong?

“But the bottom line is, I just want the fans to get a chance to meet these awesomely hilarious guys that have brought so much laughter and joy to all of us. Is that so wrong?”

I don’t think it’s wrong at all. I’m just assuming that they might also some important personal reasons for this being the way they prefer to do it. Even beloved cult celebrities have private lives, after all. Their personal situations may not currently allow for a lot of travel.

My sister works for a fairly popular author who recently had some health issues they’d rather remain private, so travel and conventions have been cut down considerably. But that’s not the official reason given.

I guess I’m just saying there may be more to the decision than “they just like it best”. *grin*

    @4 – I DON’T think it’s the musical, although it should be.

More likely it’s the better-known “How to Try and Artificially Replicate Every Single Aspect of ‘7th Voyage of Sinbad’ on a Budget Without Ray Harryhausen, and See What Happens” version, which, although much less nightmarish, that’s comparatively speaking:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aMoWSB825iA

(If it were Titanic, I’d say it was the musical in a heartbeat. Looks like their kind of obscure nightmare fodder that doesn’t seem to exist anywhere else in the world. Not to mention PD.
But with RT, I could see them doing either version, loading them down with Kevin’s default “Tolkien-nerd/Renfest Conspiracy” jokes for 90 minutes, and they’d be perfectly happy and never know the difference. Waste, really. :( )

I would love to meet these guys, like the CT shows. For two reasons… 1. To say thanks for doing what you do, and for what you’ve done with M.S.T.3K. And 2. To get them to sign some of my stuff. I would love to shake hands with these guys and tell them how much they’ve helped me deal with some of the hardest times in my life. Or like when I met the people of Cinematic Titanic, I said ummmm, errr , hi I, you, me like, Cambot, Gypsy. Tom Servo, Crowwww! What a goof, but I would be glad to meet these guys anyway.

  30. Cronkite Moonshot says:

Casey@Rifftrax, thanks for the info. Though I’d still love to see the guys live and in person some time having them do so many of the shows in Nashville makes sense now at least. I was kind of thinking that it would be something either technical or for convenience sake like that.

I must be weird because I have no overwhelming desire to meet famous people whose work I like. What am I going to say, Gee, I like your work, thanks? I say that by buying their work and going to their shows.

I’ve been to several CT shows but have not been tempted to wait on line for an hour just to get Joel to scribble his name on my MST guide. It’s enough for me just to enjoy the work.

    But that’s just me. YMMV.

  33. Gummo — you said it. The whole groupie thing strikes me as something you outgrow (or you never quite grow up, I guess). As an adult I’d be kind of embarrassed to meet Mike and Co. “Yes, you guys really make me laugh. But you aren’t Gods and, of course, you know that and we won’t ever really be friends and why are we wasting each other’s time standing here awkwardly trying to pretend otherwise?”

Maybe it’s because I’ve been on the other end of that (as a former and sometimes current performer) but there’s not really much point. Keep buying their stuff and that’s the appreciation they really need. And in person they are just people. Maybe even really nice people, but not too much different from you or me (well, I understand Bill is REALLY different, but it’s best not to talk about that here :>)

  34. Sharktopus says:

Yeah, Bill can be rather sensitive about about his vestigial tail. Why’d you have to bring it up, Mike?

I don’t really feel the need to meet people I admire, mostly because I have very little to say besides “Thanks for doing what you do” – but there is a tangible thrill from a live performance that you just can’t get from these simulcasts. I think that’s what people really want, more than any meet & greet.

  35. CK2 says:

@Casey@rifftrax: buck up trooper! No harm was meant!

@Captn Ross Hagen: that perfectly sums up why I would like to meet them!

@John R Ellis: you raise some interesting points about why they may not want to travel. It just seems like that’s been the case for many years now though. But of course any personal issues could have been going on all this time.

@Cheapskate Crow: I met Kevin at a book signing several years back, and he was super nice, as I suspect the others are.

@Gummo: certainly we all know they are not gods as you say, but it is nice to be able to make a personal connection, albeit briefly, so when you watch the programs you can think, “hey, I met those guys, that was pretty cool!” Well, you won’t be saying that because you’re not into that. And that’s cool. I get what you’re saying. But I’ve got a pretty sweet autograph project I’m working on and it won’t be complete until I meet Mike, Kevin and Bill.

And you, or someone else mentioned all we have to do to show our appreciation is keep buying their stuff. I agree. But what myself and others are talking about is them showing appreciation for US! I don’t mean the United States, I mean us, the fans who have been showing our support over the years by spending a LOT of money on their stuff.

Sorry for so many responses in one post! I guess that’s what happens when you’re away from the computer for a couple of days!

  36. But what myself and others are talking about is them showing appreciation for US!

Ya see, that’s what’s creepy, at least for a lot of performers.

They don’t owe us *anything* (well, a good performance, of course, but the market is its own balancing act there). They don’t have to even like fame (a lot of performers don’t) and the public that insists upon some sort of “gratitude” has just got everything out of whack. What, exactly, do they need to appreciate you for? For paying them to provide you with a good time? Ah, that’s quid pro quo, my friend. Your boss pays you for your work, right? Beyond that do you feel like you owe him your undying gratitude for deigning to employ you? (I guess if serfdom is your thing you might).

While I might be reading things that aren’t there, Mike strikes me as the sort of midwestern shy guy who isn’t all that comfortable in his role as a “star”. He’s enormously talented, but I don’t see him seeking out attention nor particularly welcoming it. And neither Bill nor Kevin seem very fame oriented either. So meeting and greeting probably doesn’t appeal to them all that much. I could be very wrong, in which case I’m surprised they aren’t on tour.

However, I do agree with Sharktopus that seeing a live performance, really live, is amazing. Much, much more fulfilling than the Fanthom events. In that regard I would not mind being there in person. But I suspect if they did such a show and did not have any time afterwards for fans that wanted it, they’d end up disappointing many (so perhaps it’s best they don’t even try).

  37. CK2 says:

Well, I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree. I don’t think I’m asking for a lot, and I do realize that certainly not a lot of actors/celebrities/whatever do take the time to meet their fans, but the ones that do, or are at least nice, really do stand out, at least to me. That goodwill I think translates into more fans because people will say, “hey, you know so and so, I met him and he was super nice” and then maybe that other person who heard that will want to check out their films. Not that I’m saying the RT guys aren’t nice, they certainly seem like cool guys. And I can only imagine that if you’re a celebrity and people are stalking you and stopping you non-stop and people are not respecting your space, then yeah, I totally agree, that’s bad and would get annoying REALLY fast. But, trying to get back on track, I’m one of those crazy people who do kind of sort of think celebrities owe a little something to their fans. I mean, if it weren’t for the fans and the money they spent on the celebrity, be it tickets, DVDs, other merchandise, etc, then the celebrity wouldn’t be a celebrity. And CT doesn’t seem to have any problems taking the time to meet all of their fans after their shows. RT and CT are kind of unique enterprises, both of which really flourish based on their fan support, and one seems to foster those fan relations more than the other.I don’t mean to keep comparing the two, but it’s hard not to.

  38. Sharktopus says:

RiffTrax usually have a booth at San Diego Comic Con, and Kevin and Bill have been to Dragon Con in Atlanta a few times, plus as someone noted above, Kevin did a book tour for A Year At The Movies, and I imagine Mike probably has done signings as well, so I really doubt it’s an issue of not wanting to meet fans. (Although all the Midwest-bred Brains seem to be rather uncomfortable with our adulation, which just makes us love them more.)

It seems to me that it’s simplyly an issue of touring not being part of the RiffTrax business plan. Clearly I’m not privy to how they’re doing economically, but I would wager they’re making a tidy profit for Legend Films (what with their small overhead), whereas I get the feeling Cinematic Titanic makes significantly more off ticket sales than DVDs. (Otherwise they’d release more titles, right?)

ANYHOO… Anybody recommend watching Jack The Giant Killer unriffed before the live event?

  39. EricJ says:

@39 – Nnnnnno. Maybe, on a “Yeah, we know, RT’s trying to do their own ‘Magic Sword’ ’cause that was a Joel classic” level–But again, the original is so painfully trying to be “7th Voyage of Sinbad” (same hero, same heroine, same villain, same director) on no money, except that Harryhausen’s stop-motion monsters weren’t that chintzy-looking and butt-ugly…And, like Magic Sword, it just don’t make no blamed sense either.

Most performers do not choose what cities they go to. They are brought there. By promoters, theaters etc. If you want CT or RiffTrax or who ever in your town/city/village you have to BRING them to you.

Is the Fathom thing as good as being at a Cinematic Titanic show? No. But it’s still better being in a crowd than sitting home watching them alone. Laughter is contagious. So the Fathom thing is a compromise middle ground in my eyes.
