Posted by Sampo, on June 22nd, 2013 An alert emailer who did not give his or her name suggested we discuss:
…the strangest plot turns in MSTied movies. You know when the plot just takes a bizarre turn that makes you go “what the heck?”
My pick on this subject has to be the Incredible Melting Man from Season 7. It had not one, but four moments like that.
(4) When Dr. Ted Nelson tries to change the subject of the status of the Melting Man with his wife by asking if she bought crackers.
(3) The whole lemon theft scene.
(2) And the climax of the film where the two rent-a-cops gun down that dopey Ted Nelson instead of the giant, melty monster standing behind him for no logical reason.
(1) The iconic “Nurse running through a glass door” scene.
I once again have to turn to “Kitten with a Whip,” the quintessential “what the heck?” movie, in which an ostensibly intelligent makes a series of decisions no such human would ever make.
What’s your pick?

Posted by Sampo, on June 19th, 2013 In today’s “TV Roundtable” at the AV Club, the topic was not just MST3K, not just a particular episode of MST3K (821- TIME CHASERS), but a specific aspect of that episode, vis: Does the appearance of Mike’s surly brother Eddie make him “an effective interloper?” I gather this is just one installment of a whole session of discussions about the “interloper.”
My $0.02: One of the delights of MST3K is that anything — including the kind of narrative complexity and character development these folks are talking about — that got in the way of the JOKES was cheerfully thrown overboard. I fear the roundtable members are searching the MST3K ship for something that was tossed in the drink long ago.
But, hey, the comments section is jumpin’ and that’s the real point, right? :-) Just kiddin’, guys.
Posted by Sampo, on June 18th, 2013 The Colonial Theater in Phoenixville, Pa., is once again showing an MST3K episode this weekend, and it’s a doozy: 907- HOBGOBLINS.

Posted by Sampo, on June 17th, 2013 Kevin and Bill will be very busy at CONvergence, an annual four-day convention for fans of science fiction and fantasy in all media, July 4-7 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Bloomington, Minn.
One highlight is sure to be “ Prometheus Debunked,” a riff an hour-long panel discussion of the movie “Prometheus,” where they will be joined by Rebecca Watson, the founder of the Skepchick blog and co-host of the Skeptics’ Guide to the Universe podcast, and PZ Myers, an associate professor of biology at the University of Minnesota Morris and the founder and co-author of the Pharyngula science blog. (Note: Bill has informed us that they will not be riffing “Prometheus.” They’ll just spend an hour making a ton of jokes at its expense.)
