Alright! I’m glad to see Shout Factory has the wheels in motion on another release. Can’t wait!

    Cool!
I would like some interviews of the off camera crew, for bonus material.

  • 4
    bartcow says:

Two of my all time favorites + two I’ve only seen once, maybe. That’s the perfect blend!

  • 5

Nice, they’re picking up the number sequence where Rhino left off! I also appreciate the fast followup to the 20th Anniversary Edition. Hope they can keep up that pace!

  • 6
    Zee says:

It better come with a mini-Servo to go with the Mini-Crow on my dashboard.

  • 7
    MattG says:

    I too demand mini-Servo.

I wonder how extensive Shout’s rights go for past Rhino releases. I’d love to see a “Vol 9.2″ for those of us who missed out on the original release  .

  • 9
    Cubby says:

Good to see Shout is continuing Rhino’s method of pairing classic episodes with absolute f-ing clunkers

Yes, because it makes perfect business sense to pack a box set with four “clunkers,” right?

Of course, I’m sure we’re in complete agreement about which are the “classics” and which are the “clunkers.” (I love “Manhunt In Space,” and, though I haven’t seen it in years, I always found “Soultaker” a weak entry, Joel’s cameo aside.)

I think it’s a great set – then again, I buy them all, regardless. This set gives me hope that we’ll see “Crash of Moons” yet.

  • 10

Well since I’ve only seen Final Justice among the set, I’m happy for whatever I can get my hands on.

  • 11
    Iced Chicken says:

I can not believe people would complain about this! Any MST3K release is a good thing! And Soultaker!! I was one of the unlucky few who missed out on the Sci-fi years becasue we did not have the channel. So 1001 will be a treat.

    I am so FREAKING excited!

  • 13
    Scott says:

I, for one, enjoyed 103. I really didn’t think it’s as bad as most people make it out as…

Anyways, nice to see how speedy that was for them to get up!

On the subject of DVDs, when is the DVD List page gonna get updated? It makes no mention of The Movie or the Shout release DVDs.

  • 16
    Mike says:

    Whoah, wait a minute…

Does everybody realize this means Commando Cody and General Hospital BOTH make their debuts on DVD?

That’s pretty gangster if you ask me!

Anyone who complains about any episode of Mst3k being released on dvd is an idiot. Even 4 of my least favorite episodes would still be worth buying imo.

    happy says:

    What a COOL set
My opinion be it worthless but still
103- Mad Monster – this is a great treat for those clamoring for Season 1 shows, it isnt 101 the Crawling Eye, but its an early CC show and this isnt bad at all and its a chance again to see Josh as Tom Servo
413- Manhunt in Space – glad to see Rocky Jones and a General Hospital. This was an ok show, followed by Tormented and the big one Fire Maidens – the Timmy Episode
So far im happy – 2 Joel Episodes
1001 – a favorite Season 10 episode because Joel is in it, the movie is kind of hard to sit through, but the segments are awesome. I prefer the black and white movies, but of all the color movies, this is in my top 10 of hard to sit through
1008 – to be honest i am indifferent on this one, ive never been a sci fi nut, but this is a Joe Don Baker movie so , well , um you know :)
Overall I like this set 2 Joels – one from Season 1 with Josh and 2 Mike’s from the Scifi channel. Im very pleased..

    hamilcar says:

i consider 1 great episode (413), 2 good episodes (1001, and 1008) and 1 close-to-unwatchable one (103) to be a very acceptable assortment. i’d like to see more from the best years of the show (seasons 3-7)… but i’ll take what i can get!

  • 25
    sebulbajohnny says:

I have to agree with the people who think ANY MST episode is a good thing. Let’s take what we can get.
Just think, with all the “rights” issues these old movies have…we have to take what we can get, when we can get it.

  • 26
    Black Rain says:

How did my original comment wind up moving ahead of the comments responding to it?

Anyways, some responses (“No negativity! Not allowed!”)

Yes, because it makes perfect business sense to pack a box set with four “clunkers,” right? (gratuitous rolleyes)

Well, that would make things a lot easier actually. Four clunkers = no buy. Pretty easy decision there. Two great eps plus two bad ones (in this case, the two Joel eps) means I have to decide whether I want to pay $50 for two episodes.

Every episode is important and worthy of being released.

Wrong. I love this show and all, but I’d say out of two hundred episodes, only about 40-50 of those are really worthy of archiving in this manner.

I understand that the whole movie rights clusterfudge makes this whole process difficult, and yes I should take cue from the theme song and really just relax, but that is how I feel

  • 27
    Mike "ex-genius" Kelley says:

Yes and it’s well to remember that any episode released will have value to many.

Manhunt is a must release for me as it’s one of the only ones in my collection that has a problem (there’s only one other that isn’t pristine). So, Hell yes, that’s REALLY exciting to me (while the other three aren’t).

But I do want a mini-Servo: kind of really need it, don’t we folks?

  • 28
    Downshaw says:

And such good news on the heels of “Future War” with our friend Robert Z’Dar. With “Soultaker” comes z’more Z’Dar. Z’Sign z’me z’up!

I’m very happy with the latest set. I won’t quite demand a mini-Servo with this set…if only because I’d settle for a mini-Gypsy or mini-Cambot!

  • 29
    Big61Al says:

Come on people! Stop bitching about what episodes get selected. You have to treat the series as a whole. Every episode is important and worthy of being released. There is also a question of obtaining rights to the featured films. You may not like the episodes selected but others do. The fact is they represent the best version picture/sound wise available and therefore a MUST HAVE for any serious MST3K fan.
Don’t be a downer man. You get see 4 more shows in pristine quality. That can never be bad!

  • 30
    Scooter says:

“if only because I’d settle for a mini-Gypsy or mini-Cambot!”
I don’t think a cambot would be likely, since it changed so many time.

  • 31
    happy says:

With this selection I wonder just how hard it is to get the Lippert movies, and if they even tried to get something from Season 3, Crawling Eye or Puma Man.. i think some of forth coming

  • 32
    Lucas D. says:

I wouldn’t necessarily call any of ‘em “clunkers,” but the season 1 episodes just don’t do it for me; the riffing is just too sparse.

  • 33

I’m a MSTie who will take anything! I love both Soultaker and Final Justice and I’m excited to see some Comedy Central eps that I didn’t catch during their original airing.

And I’m rooting for a mini-Servo. Do you think they’d do a mini-Joel? Or a mini-Mike? I’ll take mini-Forester or mini-TV’s Frank too. Pearl, Bobo, Brain Guy etc. Mini-Pitch! Or mini-Torgo. Mini-SOL. The possibilities are endless!

  • 34
    Disco 3:16 says:

One note: Mad monster has a Commando Cody episode, and Manhunt in Space has a General Hospital episode. I’ll let people fill in the blanks as far as future release impact…

  • 35
    ForkLiftKiller says:

Ooof! Manhunt in Space is a painful one.

Mad Monster isn’t bad. And I’ve been dying to see Soultaker again.

Don’t recall being thrilled with Final Justice…ugh that “Goosio” bit is terrible.

Still, I shall own this set.

  • 36
Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk says:

This set’s worth it alone for Soultaker.

“Good luck having the baby, honey.. I’ve got tickets to the game.”

“He looks like a catcher’s mitt with eyes!”

“Man, that guy’s face is small.”

  • 37
    happy says:

Mad Monster is one of those 1940 low budget monster movies with Glenn Strange as a goofy monster..
Manhunt is low budget scifi with Richard Crane as Rocky Jones..used to be Saturday morning kiddee fodder..
Even these movies were any good, they wouldnt be on MST3K would they ? All they did were clunkers and schlock, some good and bad. I really do like this set coming up

  • 38
    S.Mc. says:

    Still no Sampo, eh? Bummer.

  • 39
    Bob says:

This is an awesome list of shows. A season one show and Rocky Jones too! And the later episodes are good ones as well.

“But, I’m not in, Rocky.” Woo-hoo, I can’t wait to buy this set!

  • 40
    Paul Blaisdell says:

the cover art is pretty bad. all of Rhino’s sets beat the first two by Shout – not a good sign. if you’re happy getting any MST for 50 bucks a pop then i guess there are no problems. if you’re still holding out hopes that some classic unreleased season 3,4,5,6,7 episodes are coming then i think it’s time to get realistic. if that was possible or within Shout’s budgetary constraints it probably would have happened at least a little in these first 2 collections.

  • 41
    Lucky Jim says:

I consider “Soultaker” and “Final Justice” to both be bona fide classics, and I haven’t seen the other two so I’d say this set’s a win-win (for me anyway).

    I can’t believe they’ve released 8 season 10 episodes. Somebody’s got a real jones for it.

  • 42

Shucks. I’ll have to give it a miss. Never seen Mad Monster and Manhunt in Space (though I’m queuing MIS up on YouTube right now). Soultaker has it’s moments. I hate Final Justice. Just seems like four episodes I can live without.

  • 43
    Green Switch says:

With a Season One episode, one of the Rocky Jones episodes, and two great Season Ten choices, it sounds like an excellent DVD release!

I’m very curious to see if the bonus features here measure up to the ones in the 20th Anniversary Edition set.

    Steve K says:

I WILL HAVE IT. Four (count’em) four EXCELLENT episodes!

@Iced Chicken #11 – The two season 10 episodes are excellent: 1001 is the 10th anniversary show and so has some nice cameos, and 1008 has Joe Don Baker: ’nuff said.

Rather than the other suggestions, I’d prefer a bust of Htom Serveaux (or perhaps a Delta Maiden [that'd be quite a bust  ]– but I suppose that should wait until they can release QDK )

They’ve got to keep up the mini busts, though. My wife set our Crow on the speaker in front of the TV, and it makes a perfect silhouette!

    Tommy says:

Now they need Moon Beast, Final Sacrifice and Devilfish! 3 more awesome episodes to put there!

  • 48
    H says:

Very excited here. Definitely a strong second set. Mad Monster is a great episode and the CC short is probably the best of the Codys they did. Manhunt in Space, also great. The Rocky Jones episodes hold a special place in my heart and the GH short is the most bearable of the three. Soultaker is in my top ten Scifi era shows. Granted Joel and Frank play a big part in that but good movie too. Final Justice definitely is a great choice if for no other reason than it completes my MST3K Joe Don Baker collection.

Great job, Shout Factory guys. Keep it up.

  • 49
    Tommy says:

One I really want to see again-but is probably highly unlikely it will ever come out is Dr. Z. That one was so funny!
I also would like to see Delta Knights again.
I do like Final Justice though. Its alot better then Mitchel. (The episode that is)
Season 1 is my least favorite season though. I’ve never been able to sit through any of them.

  • 50
    William says:

    Sweet God, YES!!

Two of my favorite episodes (Soultaker and Final Justice) are coming out. This set will be mine. Now I can get of my lower-quality-VHS-mastered DVDs of them.

  • 51
    Matt says:

    Oh yeah! Final Justice!

  • 52
    The Professor says:

Hurray! These are all fine, fine selections. I, personally, enjoy the early Season 1 and KTMA episodes because of their laid back approach to riffing that allows you to get into the movie a bit more. Here’s hoping Shout releases Robot Monster in the future.

  • 53
    Luke says:

    Still no Jack Frost :(

  • 54

Watches some of Manhunt in Space. Pretty good. I guess whether I get it or not depends on the extras and my financial situation. No harm in pre-ordering it, I guess.

  • 55
    Cabbage Patch Elvis says:

Keep em comin’, Shout Factory! You think you can put out more episodes than Rhino? Go ahead on!

  • 56
    happy says:

I think we will see more of Season 1, maybe they will also release the rest of what they can of Season 10..my favorite Season 1′s left unreleased are Crawling Eye, & Robot Monster..
Maybe someday we will get Season 3 stuff, but Id say it is far on the radar..
Id like to see some of those Russian titles too..we will just have to wait and see..
    Ive waited forever for 201,203,205,208,101

  • 57
    SoulTaker says:

Did anyone else see “Final” and think “Final Sacrifice”? Not that I’m complaining… Joe Don Baker is almost as good as some Zapp Rowsdower.

Now let’s play ring-toss… with your soul!

  • 58
    norgavue says:

Haven’t seen any of those joel eps yet so this will be a treat. Add in my favorite two episodes from season ten and if your like me then “you better run…” and preorder this set. All product placement and commercial like post aside I hope to see more bonus features that match up to the last set. And any figures would make my life.

  • 59
    Joe Sixpack says:

    I want a life-size TV’s Frank with mine.

  • 60
    Ron says:

Seems like after all these years, MSTies are still bickering over Joel vs. Mike, Comedy Central vs. Sci-Fi etc. To say some episodes are not worthy of DVD release or to make reference to ‘real’ episodes is really just very silly. Personally I have a slight preference for the later (Mike/Sci-Fi) years but I love the earlier (Joel/Comedy Central)years too. If Mike was so bad then why did Joel have the smarts (and humility) to make him head writer?

  • 61
    Smog Monster says:

Man, this was your excuse to air PhaseIV …………………………. it’s pretty good if you edited out the long pause at the end :(

  • 62
M "Looks Like Popeye Got That Operation He Wanted..." Sipher says:

“Mad Monster” contains one of my all-time favorite riffs, and it’s a Josh-Tom one: “That felt good. Now I’m going to turn my daughter into a woodchuck.” It’s just so… silly, yet no sillier than the plot of the movie, if you think about it.

And I love the Rocky Jones episodes. There’s something so EARNEST and innocent about those two movies that, mixed with incompetence and low budget, makes for prime comedy material. I’m hoping for “Crash of the Moons” shortly after.

I know this is not going to be a popular opinion… but the Man or Astro-Man? mention was probably the most interesting part of the Joel cameo in “Soultaker” for me. Also… wow, the two movies with joe Estevez one after the other?

I’d call this a damn solid set.

  • 63
    Satan's Jockstrap says:

It just isn’t death with dignity when there’s an Estevez in the room.

    F**king awesome set….bravo Shout!!!

  • 64
    Jeff McM says:

Buying box sets with ‘lame’ episodes, however one might define that, pays for the DVD rights down the road for ‘non-lame’ episodes. Plus, many ‘non-lame’ episodes will NEVER be available no matter how much people want to complain.

  • 65

I’m always surprised at how varied people’s tastes are. I can’t stand Season 1, and Manhunt/Crash of the Moons is really hard to watch and enjoy (as is much of Season 4, sadly for me). I know people have different senses of humor and all, but sometimes the difference in taste is almost unfathomable to me . . .

I wonder if that’s mostly a Joel/Mike thing, or an age/generational thing, or a regional/culture one . . . hell, that’d be an interesting poll: episode preference by age, profession, state where the person grew up, etc.

  • 66
    jason davis says:

first i like this set. mad moinster is underated. it is a good episod eplus you get commander coduy which telles me we might get more season 1 episodes. To me you try to put all of the epidsodes on dvd. The good, bad or ugly. manhunt is space is a great epsode. soultaker was okay, however you get the return of joel. final sacrifice was a very good episode. I think this is a great set to buy. a very balanced dvd set. I am going to buy it. Mad monster you have to be in the right mood for it. I always enjoyed it. that leaves diabolik, squirm, track of moonbeast, it lives by night, and dr. z left in season 10.

  • 67
    Hamdingers says:

I think everyone has that one or two episodes they scan the list for with hope, then say ‘aww’ when they are not there. For me, that’s Operation Double 007 and The Day The Earth Froze.

Having said that – I’m fine with this layout. I loved both the Rocky Jones movies and Soultaker is funny. I know little of Season 1 so I’m excited to see Josh in action.

  • 68
    Zombie says:

    I’m excited.

And for all the real fans, don’t be upset by the haters out there. Remember, this is the internet, and most of the happy people read the news and go on their way, you know the rest of this thought.

I just don’t get how people can claim to be fans of something and then turn around and say they hate half of it. Its as bad as the Star Wars “fans” that hate the new trilogy.

Do you buy just CT dvd’s and no rifftrax? I get them all. I laugh at both, why does there always have to be sides? I don’t like Pepsi, I’ll admit that, Pepsi can go home and cry to mammy like the baby pepsi is. Eat a peach, Pepsi!

  • 71
    Opus says:

I think the disappointment over Sci Fi era episodes being released (besides the fact that they are not as funny) is that many of us have copies of the Comedy Central episodes on bad quality VHS recorded from 2 head VCRs and we’re eager for upgrades to them.

  • 72

I kind of agree with the poster who is wondering why “fans” say they don’t like about half of the episodes.

There’s nothing wrong with having an opinion, and certainly not all the music made by the Beatles was excellent (some was even annoying) but even if you have likes and dislikes I don’t get the intense feelings of hatred when shows are released. Surely those folks must understand the vast majority of us are completists? And, as a wise reviewer wrote on the Entertainment Weekly site, even bad MST3K is better than nearly any other television out there.

I personally don’t like season one at all, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want it in my collection. When my wife and I go through our “cycle” of watching all the shows in order every couple of years (we’re in the late 500′s right now) I kind of cringe when I see how unfunny the show was that season. But do I complain that this set contains a season one episode? Nope, I’m glad to get it so the pretty bad one I have can be replaced (unlike the broadcast quality of nearly all the rest of the seasons I have, none of season one is very good, nor have I spent any time trying to improve it).

Which brings up another point — I *have* broadcast quality DVDs of all the rest of the seasons and I’m STILL happy to buy the commercial ones. They may not even be better than mine (there are at least one or two that won’t, as I professionally mastered them from several sources and used techniques I’m sure the Shout! folks won’t). However, I love MST3K and having “official” copies of all of this stuff is wonderful. What else would I waste my money on? (And, yes, I lust after a Tom Servo figure).

Teenage Cavegirl #69 ( woohoo ). I’m curious as well… when Set 14 comes out, 8 of the 13 Season 10 episodes will be on DVD. As a percentage, no other season comes close ( including Set 14, both Season 4 and Season 5 are at 11/24 ). I think Seasons 6 & 8 have the next highest saturation.

Season 2 has 201,203,205,208,210 & 213 – thats 6 more to go there. At least they are closing in on getting almost through one season. From Season 10 – I dont think Squirm, Diabolik or It Lives By Night will be coming anytime soon, but the other 2 have a shot. One good thing about whatever does get released on DVD, it is chance to upgrade & replace tapes, some of which are getting washed up in terms of quality, and also clears some space up. A lot of my Season 4 stuff isnt of the best quality, so Ive been waiting for a few releases toward the later part of Season 4 I have like 3 shows crammed onto a single tape at EP speed, so the quality isnt so good. There are maybe 5 or 6 shows I didnt really like, and most have been released anyway, but overall Im happy to see anything released.
A dream set for me would be The Lippert movies and anything from show 415 to 420 as I get preferred episodes and a chance to upgrade washed up tapes to DVD :)

I’m sure they’re releasing so many season 10 eps because it’s easier to secure the rights for them.

And I do understand having a preference for one host or another, one style or another, but dammit, they’re ALL funny, to a greater or lesser degree. I always have preferred Joel and Trace over Mike and Bill, but I watched “Werewolf” this past weekend form the 20th Anniversary box, and I laughed myself into a hernia. They’re both hysterical and funny and smart, along with damn near everyone else involed. So – Joel and Trace, you’ll always be my “firsts” and will have a special place in my heart, but Mike and Bill, you’re great!!! (Of course, so are Kevin and Mary Jo and Josh and Frank etc etc etc). I guess what I’m trying to say is – they’re all fantastic, and we should all feel lucky to have such a wealth of material – MST3K, CT, Rifftrax, Film Crew – from such funny people. NO MORE ANGER!!!

Speaking for myself, I pretty much love them all down the line but lean towards Joel because I started watching it during late Season 1 early Season 2. For some, watching older episodes is like going backwards and I totally understand that. But for me, I watched the show when they were new and believe me when i tell you season one was the funniest thing ever at the time. There was just nothing else like it and the best thing was it just kept getting funnier as time went on. You couldn’t compare it to much “funnier” episodes yet or different hosts. Well, I guess you could compare lots of things and people did but the gap wasn’t as big so you know what I mean. I can still put later eps out of my mind and enjoy those older ones as they are, even season 1. Though boring in comparison, there’s still things about them that I’ll always love and not just in a nostalgic way.

I know some really love Season 8, but I thought it was very weak at first in comparison and they really didn’t start hitting their stride again till late 8 and into 9 and 10. Minus a few hit and missing like the thing with Gypsy’s foot in Future Wax. What the hell was That all about?

By the way, Season 8 really has grown on me more and more as years have passed just like the CC era Mike eventually came to be “classic”. It might be somewhat generational or a humor preference with some but I was born in 79 and I bet there’s others here who prefer the opposite as me who are my age so…

Final Justice and Soul-taker make me happy. “I just have to go wake the rest of Menudo.”

Not seen the two Joel episodes (and I’m generally a bit wary of Season One), but I’m an enterprising kind of guy, and I’ll watch ‘em both.

    All in all, more MST=Good.

    Bobo "BuckDat" Briggs says:

Oh and am I tripping when I say wasn’t Final Justice already put out on DVD through the info club? (Along with a couple other season 10′s which may or may not have included Squirm, It Lives, Boggy Creek, Moon Beast or Gold Boots.)

Or maybe they were just some VHS releases and it was other stuff released as bare bones DVDs. I don’t remember.

    Droppo says:

I’ll never understand “fans” who bash the show. But, I do think it’s perfectly understandable to have AN opinion about the quality of each set.

This one is truly a mixed bag for me. Some good selections and one that I have no interest in.

While I love both Joel and Mike, I do have a very firm opinion on what constitutes the glory years: Seasons 2 – 7. There are some terrific Sci Fi episodes and I’m actually very pleased with the 2 selected here. Soultaker and Final Justice are easily in my Top 10 favorite Sci Fi shows.

And Manhunt in Space does come from what I consider to be the glory years. Unfortunately, it’s probably one of my least favorite episodes of that era, but complaining about that feels like nitpicking. They’re on the right track to include anything from Seasons 2-7.

My biggest concern is the inclusion of Mad Monster. For me, Season 1 falls so flat that I literally have zero interest in any of these episodes being released. It’s kind of like turning a 4-DVD set into a 3-DVD set if a Season 1 episode is included. I really hope it’s not a trend.

That’s not a knock on the show. If you recall, Best Brains themselves didn’t want Season 1 shown because they didn’t feel the quality was up to par.

So, in sum….good Sci Fi episodes, although I strongly prefer the CC Season 2-7 era. Very unhappy about Mad Monster. Appreciate including a Season 4 episode even though it’s not one of my favorites.

I’m grateful that they are releasing some more episodes, but why is it taking so long for The Final Sacrifice to get released? It’s such an iconic movie with arguably the best MST3k related character: Zap Rowsdower.

Come on Shout Factory! Is there some obscure licensing problem with this movie or something?

I wonder what Coach Don Shula would do if he were in charge of selecting the episodes.

BBDB #86 Well put and I agree ( and I also started watching at the cusp of S1 and S2 ). For those that started watching in real time, when they started watching seems to make a big difference ( based on this board ). But I wonder about people that started watching after the show stopped broadcasting…. do THEY have a more even-handed view of the series, not being locked into that whole sequential thing ?

    Joey Joe Joe says:

I just don’t get how people can claim to be fans of something and then turn around and say they hate half of it. Its as bad as the Star Wars “fans” that hate the new trilogy.

Do you buy just CT dvd’s and no rifftrax? I get them all. I laugh at both, why does there always have to be sides?

Ummm…it’s called having a difference of opinion.

As far was Star Wars goes, it’s obvious that the two trilogies have completely different feels to them. So, it’s natural that many will love one trilogy and not like the other at all.

The same can be said of MST3K episodes or CT vs. Rifftrax. Different types of humor will draw people to one or the other. That’s just the way it is.

I will admit that there are MST3K episodes that I really hate to sit through. Why? Because the movies themselves are so horrid that it hurts. The Unearthly is a perfect example. That’s a movie that makes my eyes bleed. I hate it with a passion. I’m not blaming the MST3K guys though. It’s just that that movie was way too brutal for riffing to save it, IMO.

I believe that other fans feel the same way. Does this make them lesser fans than you? No way. They just have different tastes.

So, do I get pissed if an MST3K fan says that Mitchell or Space Mutiny sucked? No way. I just realize that they have different tastes than me and I move on. I suggest that you do the same instead of complaining about it.

My 80th comment was for # 86′s comment about Final Sacrifice. Im really thrilled for Season 1 being shown, it is a part of MST3K, and one of the ways to see Josh..they were just starting out, and the show was still developing..i dont know..i really like the early stuff, as a mst fan & historian, & it upgrades my Season 1 tape collection with each DVD that comes out..no set will please everyone, based on past releases, but hey, at least Shout is putting out our favorite show..and its different era’s. Manhunt in Space is sort of a lesser show between the Hercules Movies and Fire Maidens, but still if youre in the mood to watch a campy sci fi movie, the riffs are fine & it isnt a bad show. Maybe Crash of the Moons will pop up soon :)

    Dames Like Her says:

I was so happy to see another set to be released, I almost didn’t care what episodes were on it- yes, I almost -just- didn’t- care… my copies of these eps are so well-worn that even the thought of seeing Joe Don Baker’s living ham face in crisp digital form is cause for celebration. And of course Robert Zdar’s- whatever that is on top of his body- in full focus as well. “Manhunt In Space” is not one of my absolute favorites, but personally I find that when these black and whites, which seem to become especially fuzzy over time, are rendered in DVD that I find more funny in the cleaned-up film. Ergo: it’s just easier to watch and listen to.
I fully agree about a Servo figure being a must- I wonder if a representation of all the Titans will follow in subsequent sets.
Perhaps the choices are determined by movie-rights clearing–?
All I know is, I’m gonna need me another DVD shelf!

Where’s all the vitriol that every other post on this thread references? Jeez, I know you’re all rabid MST3K geeks but try to hang a little loose. I’m sure Shout! appreciates all the praise but the groveling is so undignified.

And I love the Unearthly!

    Charles says:

To me Season 1′s are no better than the UnMSTed movie. Mad Monster also had ugly green silhouettes. I kind of like Mad Monster even though it’s not that funny.

Season 10 gets a lot of episodes because they used a lot of cheap-ass movies that were either public domain or close to it. The only ones from Season 10 that I think are unreleasable are It Lives By Night, Squirm, and Diabolik. We won’t see a lot from Season 3 or 8 because they used a lot of expensive movies from AIP and Universal Studios, unless Shout Factory has some magic kung fu they can use to get the rights.

The good news is that this means they have the rights to General Hospital, so they can release Beatniks! I love that one.

    To #82 and #87:

    Interesting.

I’m a somewhat younger (than average?) viewer, and I didn’t get into the series until maybe late Season 8 or so. I had, however, seen Joel-era stuff in syndication way back when – and while I liked it, I didn’t fully appreciate it at the time.

Later on, a friend re-introduced me to the show, and eventually I was reminded that there had been a host before Mike – a fact which I had forgotten. I immediately realized “hey, that’s the guy I really first saw the show with,” and so I was open to stuff from that era even though I was initially just a hint uncomfortable with it. Especially Crow’s voice. (I continue to prefer Bill’s, but that’s just an arbitrary thing on my part – doesn’t detract from Trace episodes.)

I still think Sci-fi era stuff is funnier, but I believe that’s because the writers as a group had had more time to hone their craft and their chemistry – really, the whole history of the show is one of increasing skill and humor, as I see it. It’s not about who hosted or what channel it was on, it’s simply about the writers/performers gaining more experience through time. Shifting pop-cultural references may also be relevant for younger folks like myself, with the Sci-fi stuff seeming both more familiar and edgier to us as a result.

And that said, I think Mike was funnier as host but that Joel was more charming and nuanced (insert Jack Frost host-segment reference here). The host segments are usually the most memorable and quotable from Joel-era material, in my experience, whereas Mike-era ones – while frequently brilliant – also more frequently serve mainly as punctuation than as prime sources of enjoyment.

Also, that fake foot thing? No, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense (‘cept in the context of kickboxing), but to someone with a largely absurdist sense of humor like mine, it was, and is, awesome.

    SoulTaker says:

Actually, I’m slightly surprised to see SoulTaker listed. I remember there was a post on the IMDB forum from one of the producers who hated, hated, hated the MST3k version of the film. I wondered if the producers would try (if they had the ability) to block this from DVD. Glad to see I was wrong. :)

I think this is a good set, although the

Soultaker is an interesting one, with the

Lets all remember one thing….this is a priliminary list; it could change at any time. Personally, its not a bad selection. In terms of Season One, I’ve only seen the four episodes that were aired during the ’95 Thanksgiving marathon, so “Mad Monster” will be like finding treasure. I also missed “Final Justice” when it came out, and ran on limited play on Sci-Fi. Plus, the Rocky Jones movie is a Season 4 fav, so I’m looking forward to this set if the titles stay the same.

When I was eh, overseas, I found that watching the episodes in order had its rewards and led to more enjoyment, perhaps because the biggest continuity to follow in the show would be the shape of the humor.

Final Justice can be a slog, until you get to this climactic scene:

Palermo: I’ll blow her brains OUT!
Crow (in his best fake-Italian accent): All over THE boat!

    John Seavey says:

It occurred to me that the reason that there always seems to be so much disappointment when the new set is announced is just that simple truth of life, the present is always more fun before you take off the wrapping.

Think about it: A potential new set could be any four of about a hundred different episodes. An actual new set is four very specific episodes. That means that pretty much everyone’s going to be disappointed, because there’s only about a 1 in 25 chance that they’re going to pick your four personal favorites.

So remember, when you start to feel irritated about the crazy new set choices, that they’re almost never going to make anyone perfectly happy. They just don’t have a chance. All we can do is enjoy the MST we get. (Which I will. Goodness knows, “Werewolf” has been spinning in my DVD player almost daily for weeks now. :) )

I don’t particularly like Season 1, but I am still glad to have another episode from MST3K. I hope Shout Factory is aggressive in pursuing the rights to all of the MSTied films. Do we have any Sales figures for the MST DVD Releases ? What does it cost to license a typical non-PD film for an MST release ? Are the Rhino and Shout factory warehouses full or empty ?

Yes, we all want Shout Factory to release every Episode immediately, by whatever means necessery, regardless of cost ( THEIR cost, WE don’t want to pay more than $12 each ).

But unfortunately they ARE a business. And the economy is ever so slightly less strong than it used to be….

OK, enough of being a corporate shill. An alternative might be a subscription / underwriting model. Let’s say WE want “Puma Man” ( everyone: “We want Puma Man” ). 500 of us pledge ( in some kind of legally binding but potentially refundable sense ) $20 each. Is that enough for SF to produce one thousand Puma Man DVDs ? We the underwriters get first crack, plus a cut of the profits on the units sold over 500.

Actually now that I get it written down, this sounds like kind of a fun idea. But we need to get the inside dope on production costs.

    MST Forever !

    Geode says:

Well, this is a disappointing mix, though I will acknowledge a bias toward the middle seasons as opposed to the last 2 SCI-FI seasons (especially 10) since I didn’t get cable until 1994 and have all the latter episodes on tape or disc.

Still, ANY MST3K release is a cause for celebration. I just wish we could get Jack Frost and Racket Girls in a release. Racket Girls has, for me, the funniest riff of all time–the “crotch slapping” punchline that is the perfect marriage of idiocy on the screen and a riff that takes full advantage of it.

Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UuK1-cUmM7Q at the 2:59 mark. Cue it up about a minute earlier, and just enjoy the scene so you can get properly warmed up. Pay special attention to the timing of the sound effect on the actor’s motion. This clip has rewatchability, and the entire movie is an underrated gem for Mike and the boys.

It seems like the ideal mix to appease all would be the following:

2 Joel episodes (preferably excluding Season 1)
    1 Mike CC episode
    1 Mike Sci Fi episode

Of course, it’s all dependent on the rights…but, if that were the mix, I truly couldn’t complain.

    Master Ninja I
    Master Ninja II
    Santa Claus
    The Final Sacrifice

    The Lost Continent
    The Magic Sword
    The Incredible Melting Man
    Puma Man

    Daddy-O
    Warrior of the Lost World
    San Francisco International
    Track of the Moonbeast

See, how much fun that is?

    The Projected Man

See? It’s just not as fun.

    StarDustMaiden says:

It seems that no matter what episodes come out, there’s always someone, somewhere that says, “Oh no! Not THAT one!” But as others have said, it’s a matter of taste. As for me, I love MST3K the same way I love my friends and family – ie, warts and all.

I’ll admit there are some episodes that leave me emotionally cold in general, but they’ve all had their bright spots. (I won’t mention them by name; I’d only open yet another can of worms.)

My father’s parents were Swedish and I’ve inheirted some of there tastes. But if I came to work with a big jar of pickled herring, I’d get a chorus of “yucks” that would rival the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. But I’m willing to bet that I could round up twice as many Swedes who’d say, “Aw, you don’t know what’s good!”

When I hear people sneering at those who like what they don’t like and vice versa I feel like I’m being haunted by my mother’s ghost. Whenever she’d thrust some dorky piece of clothing at me and I didn’t go into paroxysms of joy, I’d invariably get “You never like what I like!” Luckily for both of us, she outgrew that in my college years.

Humor is my favorite weapon in these stressful times, so I’m content with all the MST3K I can get. I’m very glad to see “Soultaker.” The “wet t-shirt contest” cracks me up every time.

In closing, let’s take some advice from Paul’s letter to the Romans, “Let not him who eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him which eateth not judge him that eateth…”

We’re also told to be content with what we have. Good advice for the Me Generation.

Wow,another box set already mentioned and the 20th Anniversary edition hasn’t been released that long ago–can’t wait! I wish Shout! would release more of season 3,but any MST3K is great by me!! I just hope the bonus material is more than just the original trailers for each movie.Maybe interviews with some of the actors/actresses from one or two of the movies mentioned, like Vivian Schilling or Joe Estevez?? Maybe the docs of MST3K that Comedy Central and Sc-Fi did would be nice,too..KEEP ‘EM COMING SHOUT!!

Anyone have any clue as to what amazon is listing will come out on next Tuesday, November 18th? It is saying a MST3K set, 480 minutes in length, will be released on that day? What is this?

    Kitty Reed says:

Glad to see Mad Monster. Haven’t seen that one. I always have trouble seeing that on the youTube.

    I haven’t seen Final Justice in a coon’s age.

Love Manhunt. Soft place in my heart for the really old stuff.

Soultaker is a stupid-stupid movie. I’ll love owning it.

As far as some MST episodes judged less than others, well, if I laugh out loud once, it’s a good one. Never has there been an episode where that didn’t happen, yet, anyway.

  • 144
    Rex Dart says:

It’s most likely the non-collector’d edition of the 20th anniversary set. You know, for the MST3K fans who are opposed to collecting? Those guys. I’m sure they’re out there!

I would like to second the “I’ll take anything they give us” sentiment. I’ve already seen (and loved) a lot of the newer episodes, so I’m thrilled to see those on DVD, and I haven’t seen a lot of the older episodes, so I’m equally thrilled to see those on DVD.

And Goosio is awesome. Did you know he’s Goosio? Still, not as good as the Maltese men sketch.

  • 145
    MikeK says:

    “Why you hurt Goosio!?”

    R.A. Roth says:

Is there something wrong with Season 6? Jesus, there are literally 16 episodes not released from this season. As a person who prefers Mike Nelson’s tenure (please no hate mail; I like Joel, just not as much as Mike; I have a thing for big beefy Dutch guys; not how it sounds, end sidebar now before it gets too weird), Season Six is high on my want list. Alas, nothing has been released from this year since Starfighters. Before that, you have to go back to early box sets and individual DVDs.

Please Shout! Factory, get in there and bring the Season Six magic!

    Randy

    Glen BW says:

Yeay! More ‘never-been-released-on-home-video’ (either tape or DVD) episodes to be unleashed thru the DVD boxed set! Keep up the good work, Shout Factory! Now if only they can tackle the licensing problems to release certain copyrighted films like Godzilla and Gamera…

  • 148
    happy says:

I think Season 6 has a few harder to get titles like the Universal movies, the MGM or Lions Gate movies for example SF INTL, Kitten with a Whip, Girls Town, but I also think there are some easy pickings to name a few
Beast of Yucca Flats, Zombie Nightmare, Invasion USA, Racket Girls, Violent Years..
As for Godzilla & Gamera, well Godzilla I think its safe to say forget Godzilla vs the Sea Monster and I personally dont see Gamera on the radar anytime soon. There are probably much easier to get rights to movies than Gamera or just about 95% of Season 3 movies…
That being said watch the next set contain 2 Gamera movies and 2 Season 6 movies LOL :D (joking)
I can see the next set having the last 2 Season 10 episodes that they can get the rights to which are Track of the Moonbeast and Dr Z. From there, they can change the focus to other seasons…
Its really fun to anticipate what Shout will release..

  • 149
    Manny Sanguillen says:

I still couldn’t give two ****s what they release on dvd since I already have ‘A’ quality dvds of every episode, obtained from Skyroniter.

Still, its funny to read all of the nutty thoughts on here.

People actually are complaining about which little useless toy is put in the box?!

I would have hated to been around you back in the 70′s when every major cereal brand put little junk like that in each box of cereal.

  • 152
    fanbot says:

Skyroniter is okay, but only his season 7 material is really spectacular. Everything else I’ve gotten from him has these massive vertical black bars on the sides of the screen and the video clarity is still just VHS.

    Bobo "BuckDat" Briggs says:

“Also, that fake foot thing? No, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense (’cept in the context of kickboxing), but to someone with a largely absurdist sense of humor like mine, it was, and is, awesome.”
I agree, the most absurd stuff on the show is always the funniest to me as well. There’s just something about the foot prop and especially Servo’s “legs” that is just beyond odd though. It’s grown on me as one of those memorable what the hell moments but the first times seeing it I thought there was something I was missing. I like to point it out to friends now as one of those borderline disturbing moments on the show.

  • 154
    Sick Nick says:

I’m most excited about the season 10 episodes. I’ve seen all 4 episodes and for me the shows writing gets better as it goes along. Your lieing to yourself if you think season 1 stuff is the funniest just because Joel is in it. There is 1 joke every 10 minutes but to each there own. I’m sure I love episodes people hate. Where is Jack Frost?

  • 155
    Steve Vil says:

Man, who cares what the covers look like? Who cares if all of the episodes included are to your personal liking? The box cover could literally be a ball of snot and the set could contain the four worst episodes and I’d still buy it. What else is out there that’s as good as MST? Man, you people sure can find new and interesting ways to whine about what’s supposed to be your favorite TV show ever.

We could use less fans like you, Manny. I can tell you that most people here, like me, already have had most of these episodes in one form or another before they were offically released. But we all still buy the DVDs. Skyroniters dvds are indeed quite good looking but i assure you that even he buys these DVDs. Support the show and the people releasing it, please.

  • 160
    losingmydignity says:

Wow, deja vu! This set looks exactly like a Rhino set. Sometimes it freaks me out, it’s like they tap into my brain or something to make sure they always release:
one so so to poor ep
two good to very good eps
    one excellent to classic ep

By combining Droppo’s theorem and mine (my grading scale in other words) we can now predict any combination of what the next sets will contain.

Soultaker- A- An excellent ep. Glad about this for selfish reasons. Only have a video taped copy of this.

Final Justice B+ Solid, very good ep. Also have only on video. So ditto.

Manhunt in Space B Good ep. I have a soft spot for Rocky and Winky.

Mad Monster – Haven’t seen but I don’t rate season one or KTMA. I think it’s unfair to them, eps that are fun enough on their own but do not live up to the rest of the shows standards. I have very mixed feelings about Season Ones being released. I hate to think someone would pick up one of these boxed sets, watch a season one first and give up on the show as not being as funny as they had heard. For fans, it’s cool, but I could really care less if they release them.

overall, I’m a little disappointed in Shout Factory. In fact, I’m not taking their calls anymore…

  • 161
    I'm not a medium, I'm a petite says:

Actually, I think I read somewhere that Shout Factory was set up by former Rhino people. If true, then maybe MST is still in the same hands now as it was then ( whether for good or ill I won’t try to say ).

Has anyone seen these titles on Amazon.com for “Mystery Science Theater 3000: Season One”? There are entries for Season Two, Three, etc. through ten. No info, just a place to click and sign up for notification from Amazon when the item becomes available. Anyone know what these are???

  • 164
    Innocent says:

I like that they included Mad Monster – it’s 1 of just 3 MST3K werewolf movies ever done. The other 2 being Werewolf and I Was A Teenage Werewolf. So that’s a plus.

And what is up with everybody acting so shocked that a Season 1 episode was done now??? Wasn’t Women of the Prehistoric Planet just shown? That’s a first seasoner, as well.

  • 165
    happy says:

    Women of the Prehistoric Planet
    The Crawling Hand
    Mad Monster

    Speedy says:

I see that they have the season listing on Amazon. From the post this last January:

“Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, Shout! Factory will be the exclusive worldwide home entertainment and digital media distributor for Mystery Science Theater 3000 branded properties which include a vast library of original episodes that have never-been-available on DVD or for digital download.”

I wonder if maybe that means that Amazon will do what they have for the Nickelodeon cartoons, offer episodes for download or appear on DVD-Rs?

  • 167

Probably just placeholders in case such a thing ever happens or to guage interest in such an item. It’s kind of like the listing for the Star Wars Holiday Special. It ain’t coming, but they list it anyway.

  • 168

The biggest hurdle I’d like Shout Factory to overcome would be getting Sandy Frank to get his head out of his rectum and let them release those eps.

The Gamera movies, Time of the Apes, the Fugitive Alien films.

Come on Sandy, it’s been 15 years or so. You can forgive and forget!

I think it’s been pointed out before that Sandy Frank no longer controls those films. Although he would probably have to sign off on any use of the “Sandy Frank versions”, his OK alone would not clear them. When you get to complicated rights issues like Gamera (or Godzilla for that matter) you exponentially increase the difficulty in clearing the episode for release.

  • 169

Judging from all the comments, Id say DVD releases from Shout are the most important things on fans minds :)
Even though there is plenty of ‘living’ to do until Feb., its only 3 months away until the release…
To me Mad Monster is a sign that we will see more Season 1 along the course of the releases depending on whats easy to get rights to Slime People,Robot Monster,Robot vs the Aztec Mummy,Crawling Eye should be easier targets (? maybe ?)

  • 170
    Manny Sanguillen says:

Hey, I aint speading any hate. I love all you guys.

I just don’t see any reason to buy things twice if I’m satisfied with the first one. I don’t have 20-20 vision, but I can’t find thing one wrong with any of Sky’s dvds. The ‘black bars’ thing I’ve never noticed either. I am one of the worlds last hold outs for getting HDTV because I find regular tv to be good enough. Maybe that is one reason I’m not so picky about getting an ‘A+’ version of it.

My Sky’s DVD of ‘Mad Monster’ looks okay to me. Plus I have a vhs of it that is pretty close to A quality (probably B+) that I got a long time ago in a trade. I was pretty adamant at one time about getting a good version of it because I’ve always liked that episode.
Being a laurel & Hardy fan, I love that it has the woman who played Hardy’s wife in ‘Sons of The Desert’ (Mae Busch), and who was in lots of other shorts of theirs. I always liked her. Mad Monster was one of her last movies before she died.

And as far as the toys in the box, I just dont have any use for them. If you collect stuff like that, no biggie. I don’t think you are bad people or anything, It just doesnt matter to me whether they put in the box a servo figurine, a picture of a tadpole, a dead stuffed rat, or nothing. It wouldn’t matter one way or another, because I like mst3k for the Humor. (I wouldn’t mind having the dead stuffed rat though).

Some things people say annoy me though, like calling those green-tinted versions of the silhouettes “ugly”. Whats ugly about it?
I love the color green. How could that be a legitimate reason for keeping someone from watching the show? I’m sorry, I just find that ridiculous.

  • 171
    Manny Sanguillen says:

Also, as far as politics goes, I dont have any faith in any politicians ability to make the world a better place, be they democrat or republican. They are all corrupt. They are like professional wrestlers, in that that while on stage they are against one another (democrat vs. republican), but behind the scenes they sup & drink together and laugh about how foolish the common people are in buying their whole schpeil.
Having said that, I now promise to not mention politics any further ever again.

  • 172
    Tarantulas says:

I hate how all these things just devolve into a Joel vs. Mike thing.

  • 173
    The Professor says:

I still think you need to pick up the offical dvds, Manny, even doubly so now that you say you like Mad Monster. Shout releases these sets for people like you, me and the other MSTies who visit this site. MST3K, while a fairly well-known show, certainly isn’t a big seller with people who aren’t already fans of it. We need to show Rhino and Shout how much we appreciate them for keeping the alive by buying those sets.
Also, if you enjoy Mad Monster so much and spent so much time looking for a good copy, why wouldn’t you get the best copy available? I know the official release will be better than your bootleg. Shout is putting that episode on there for the people (once again, like you and me) who actually enjoy the first season and I, personally, feel that’s the season that needs to be preserved more than any other.
The lecture ends here. I probably deserve a “Go to bed, old man” for that.

  • 174
    Creepygirl says:

I too am happy for any new set of MST3K. I don’t believe some have to worry. In about 10 years, after all the episodes that can be released are released, I’m sure we’ll see all the best-of sets. That should make some of you *fans* very happy. I’ll stick with I’m happy with every set

  • 175
    Rotten as British Teeth says:

I would rather wait and buy the releases on dvd rather than depend on someone selling dvd-r copies, and taking the chance of getting shoddy results. After all, as we’ve seen there’s a certain drama in anticipating Shout’s next release, and whether or not they start cracking through the barriers of rights’ issues. For me, it’s helped renew an interest in the show, which I had lost touch with for awhile.

  • 176
    Fred P says:

Hey I’m a buyer of every set from Rhino and will be of all of Shouts and “Happy”, I’m also A Republican. Don’t knock me because I work, pay taxes and never take handouts from the government. Manny Sanguillen says:

I got news for you, I bought every rhino vhs release, and every Rhino dvd release except for the Godzilla one because that got priced right out of my affordability range. I did however join netflix for a 2 week trial for the only reason of renting it.

I’ve also bought all of the film crews, all of the Mike Nelson solo commentaries, and all of the Cinematic Titanics.
Plus I was a member of the Info Club and bought the silhouette post-it notes, the Crow “You know you want me baby t-shirt, and the diabolik Raw tape.
So I got a right to not buy any future releases if I choose not to, if you ask me.

I have also bought all the Rifftrax shorts, and if they would ever get off their asses and release that fred Willard one on dvd and the 3-riffers Plan 9 from outer space, I would buy those too. (I dont mess with div-X, or chicken feed).

I have keep current with DAP downloads, but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy any episode commercially. I have no problem downloading ep’s that aren’t available for sale but as soon as they do come for sale I think I owe it to MST to buy them, plus theirs a chance that the rights will get messed up and they will go away, like we’ve seen a couple of Rhino disks do. Get em’ while their hot. I do think the MST3K.com price’s can be a bit high compared to other retailers which seems backwards to me.

  • 183
    I'm not a medium, I'm a petite says:

Ransom #182. Amen sibling. Buying the official DVD release is a price we can pay for the free DAPs. It’s a good deal for the Brains becasue it maintains interest in their product, and even a good deal for the underlying rights holders, MST has been the second life for a lot of films.

Are there a lot of DAPsters here ? There doesn’t seem to be, relative to the participants in DAP, but maybe they are just lurking… let us know if you’re out there.

  • 184
    fanbot says:

    >183

I’ve got all retail MST3K DVD releases.

The rest of my all DVD collection is primarily DAP-DVD based with a few Skyroniter and some from Cheepnis. I’ve had to replace some Skyroniter episodes with Cheepnis episodes due to Sky’s encodings having missing portions of the frame (most of his encodes have vertical bars covering up much of the sides of the episode, some are larger than others). And some (not all) of Cheepnis’s eps are clearly DVDs made from a DAP’s XVID encodes. DAP-DVD is usually the best I’ve seen for getting a complete video source even if some of the eps are slightly lower in quality than you might see in a Skyroniter encode.

That’s extremely optimistic of you, but I’d say you’ve got an awfully long wait coming. 75% of what hasn’t been released will NEVER come out on DVD because of the rights issues.

  • 189
    Happy says:

I dont mind waiting for releases, and I know some arent coming for a long time if at all. All my MST3K titles not released from Rhino or Shout are tapes & would be a time consuming/costly project to convert over 100 shows especially now with our economy tanked. I bought some of Skys tapes to upgrade some of my washed up tapes, his video quality is great. Otherwise I have my own tapes that are still good after all these years…and with each DVD release, they go bye bye :)
So I dont mind waiting every few months for releases ..
