I’m happy for “Leech Woman”! As I’ve posted before all my cats are nicknamed after MST3K movie characters. The new kitty in my life is Malla – an older girl who came here and found youth and love. And to tie in further with the “Mitchell” bonus, Warner Archives has released the uncut “Mitchell” (where you find out what happened to Deaney) restored to 16×9 widescreen on DVD today. Good times all around.
A box set that is packed with awesome, I can’t wait (3 of the 4 episodes are among my favorites).
Don’t wanna be “that guy” but here goes. Not a huge fan of the set, but really happy about the possibilities this set hopefully foretells. Glad 111 – Moon Zero Two is coming out… mostly because I have purchased and traded for this episode several times and none of them are in great condition. Of course, its hard to know if the commercial release will be in good condition or not. 802 – Leech Woman has quickly become one of my new favorites… “Neal! Neal!!!” 422 – The Day the Earth Froze, I know has been on several people’s most wanted list. Understandably so, cause its a solid episode. But here’s the kicker. I completely understand the excitement about 909 – Gorgo for licensing reasons and the fact of its rare airing… and I’ve stated on this forum many times: I love every episode of MST3k for one reason or another… but I’ve watched Gorgo at least two dozen times and just can’t get into it. It is easily my least favorite episode.
But, its all MST3k… I’ll buy it. Doesn’t matter how “good” or “bad” the sets are, cause its my favorite show. Period.
And I think the bigger and maybe stranger thing is there are 2 great episodes as bonuses! What’s that all about? If for some wacky reason you don’t have Mitchell or The Brain That Wouldn’t Die, that is a huge bonus! I’d like to see Eegah! as a bonus, cause I hate the Rhino disc. Mine is screwy for some reason.

Seriously, at this point I’d be more suprised at them not getting an episode licensed.

GORGO?!?! Shout! absolutely blows my mind with EVERY release! Simply unbelievable! And that bonus disc?! Too cool! Plus, Moon Zero Two is one of my favorite eps from the first season, so definitely glad to see that.
There was a point when I thought we’d get a good chunk of the series, but never the *whole* series. But, with the miracles Shout! continues to perform, eventually having the entire series on DVD (even the apparent “locked in a vault” protection of the Godzilla flicks) no longer seems impossible. Furthermore, the care and attention to detail consistently shown by Shout! is nothing short of outstanding. They really go the extra mile for us fans!

Believe me when I say this, I truly hate being redundant. But, I can’t be alone here, can I? I went (mostly) all digital a couple of years ago. In doing so I began making all of my MST3K purchases via iTunes.
A funny thing happened after the release of XXIV. The releases on iTunes stopped. None of the subsequent Box Sets have been released to iTunes.
This is most disheartening because frankly I don’t have the space to store all of the physical media anymore to say nothing of the fact that most of my media consumption is via iPhone, iPad or (mostly) my iMac.
Releasing the episodes via iTunes also allows for cherry-picking, albiet at a fairly premium price of $9.99. That price is definitely fair though when considering a situation of buying a Box Set and only really truly wanting 2 of the 4 episodes included therein.
If the problem is licensing them via iTunes then for heaven’s sake put them on the Shout! Factory site for digital download. I would gladly drop $9.99 for a digital version of “The Day the Earth Froze”. When SF took over the MST3K library, I posted the following topic at the SF board. I’m pleased to say that as of this writing most of the ‘most desired’ on that list have been released:

#53 Trust me, you’re not the only one here who dislikes Gorgo. It’s really a middle-of-the-road monster flick that doesn’t have the goofy charm as the Godzilla or Gamera films, so the riffing is pretty paltry. Honestly, if the episode had been locked away forever I wouldn’t care.
#53 and #63…agree wholeheartedly. “Gorgo” is a truly average episode. I would rather watch an old VHS of “Being From Another Planet” or something..
@#33 Criswell, your prediction is already a bit off. Vol. XXIX (29) should see release in March(ish) of 2014, not July, which is when Vol. XXX (30) should see release (man, what are they gonna do with THAT set, huh?)
I do agree though, I’ve been expecting them to announce Incredible Melting Man for a future MST set since they announced their plans to release the movie itself on BluRay (next week, actually). I guess they want to keep enough distance between those releases, don’t want to oversaturate the market with icky stickiness.
My Prediction:
Vol. XXIX (29) will have:
305-Stranded in Space
418-Attack of the the Eye Creatures
703-The Incredible Melting Man
804-The Thing that Couldn’t Die
My prediction for volume XXVIV would be:
112 – UNTAMED YOUTH
420 – THE HUMAN DUPLICATORS or some other easy to grab Joel episode. Maybe a Herc film?
703 – THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN
804 – THE THING THAT COULDN’T DIE
I’d say 804 is a given.
I just want to take a moment to thank Shout! Factory not only for the great sets of our favorite show, but for continuing to announce the content of subsequent sets on release day, ensuring there is always something specific to look forward to.
Gorgo, wow. I’m sure I haven’t seen this one since the original transmission which was *gulp* a few days over 15 years ago (my God, how time flies)…
#62 I think it has to do with the way the films are licensed. On most of my sets the episodes owned by Universal aren’t listed as under licence just copyrighted to. I’m guessing Universal and/or MGM have put some kind of block up in the Digital downloading deals.
@#65 Regarding your thoughts on what Shout Factory will release on Volume 30 aka XXX in the summer of 2014, how about these rather facetious suggestions/predictions:
112 – Untamed Youth
412 – Hercules and the Captive Women
416 – Fire Maidens of Outer Space
601 – Girls’ Town
What better choices for Volume XXX than two Mamie Van Doren movies?
Make up your own predictions for Volume XXX using the dirtiest-sounding movie-experiment episode titles or content. It’s too bad episodes featuring other suggestive, double-entendre titles like Racket Girls and The Leech Woman will have already been released.
This set is a let down for me. Day the Earth Froze is one of the weakest episodes, Gorgo is rather boring, and Leech Woman is another one of those drab black and white films from the fifties or sixties. However, Moon Zero Two alone is worth the price of admission, so I’ll still be getting the set just for that.
Switch out Earth Froze with 502 – Hercules, Leech Woman with Riding With Death, and Gorgo with Pumaman, and this would be a stellar set. But I guess every set can’t always be a winner, so this selection will have to do.
C’mon, Shout! Bring on the Herc!!!

Terrific news! I like what Shout! has been doing with their single episode releases and I’ll gladly buy Mitchell and The Brain the Wouldn’t Die.
Speaking of Mitchell, it’s now available on DVD from Warner Archive, uncut and in the correct aspect-ratio, so now we don’t get to see the boom mic during the dinner scene.
Vol. XXX should include nude scenes cut from MST3K versions of the movies. How about that sex scene from Werewolf, which lasts uncomfortably long? Or that Final Justice scene where Palermo rapes a girl in the shower… yeah I’m out of ideas here.

I’m glad we’re almost done with the Season 1 episodes. They’re interesting and all, but I never watch them. I agree with Joel and the Brains that they are better off not being released, but too late for that!
Day The Earth Froze is one of my earliest MST3Ks and even back then I didn’t like it as much as many others. The short is funnier than the film. Then again, I don’t cotton to the Russo-Finish movies for some reason.
Leech Woman – this is great! I was worried when they skipped over it. This is a great Mike Ep. “You can’t be afraid of your own hair”.
Gorgo – I didn’t realize it was so ‘rare’ since I taped it the first time it aired. Kinda bad audio and very dull, but worth another look.
Please, SHOUT! get the rights to Daddy-O and Fire Maidens of Outer Space! I’ll pay double!!
For volume XXX, I call for the uncensored balls in Devil Fish! Fans demand to see the balls!
@56 While I myself am not into the Scream Factory line, Shout Factory has definitely been getting a lot of my wallet money thanks to MST3K and their children’s lineup (been buying Power Rangers and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, with me being interested in picking up M.A.S.K. and The Aquabats Super Show in the future).
Also, speaking of Mitchell, the un-MiSTied version just came out on MOD DVD today via Warner Archive.
Disappointed. Probably the last set before Halloween and no Screaming Skull, no Melting Man no Thing that Couldn’t Die. Day is great and Leech Woman is okay, otherwise blah.

Wow, and I haven’t even had the chance to watch anything from the new set yet, and now this embarrassment of riches!
I was lucky enough to tape Gorgo on the first showing. I haven’t watched it very often, though. I no longer have a working VCR, and at the time I taped it the SciFi Channel was relegated to a fuzzy channel number before our cable system went digital, so all the episodes I taped around that time are not the best quality. The same thing happened with several episodes during the Comedy Central years, but now most of those have come out on DVD. I’m so happy about the other three! I have a good copy of Moon Zero Two on DVD I got as a prize, but TDTEF and TLW are two episodes I downloaded and burned on DVD from YouTube and the audio and video don’t exactly line up. That’s not a big deal on something dubbed like TDTEF except during the host segments, but it’ll be FANTASTIC to have (hopefully) better quality on these! Shout rules!
Only two more season one episodes left after this set.

See, here’s some background on Gorgo. In 1961 Gorgo stood out as by far the best special effects of any Big Monster movie we’d ever seen. What we usually got was patronizing crap with bad blue-screen or guys in gorilla suits, because producers knew that those kids would buy anything with a monster. Gorgo had a totally credible cast, SERIOUS–@$$ed big lizards (TWO of them), and a terrific plot twist.
So cut Gorgo some slack. I was one of the lucky ones who saw it, but missed taping it, on its one showing on MST, and that was, like, the first time in thirty years after we’d first seen it at the Kadena Base Theater in Okinawa as high school freshmen and sophomores.
The Persistence of Memory–what we remembered most fondly was the Big Reveal, when the stern professors are telling Bill Travers and Bill Sylvester that what they’ve got is a baby. For years we’d talked about this great scene where they said, “That would make it nearly two hundred feet tall!” “At the very least.” And IMMEDIATELY cut to Big Mama rising from the sea with an unearthly yowl.
Didn’t quite happen that way, I discovered when I saw it on MST. Pity. One edit away from legend.
Even so, Gorgo was, like Forbidden Planet or Invasion from Mars, one of the rare sci-fi/monster movies of the era that DELIVERED.
Not threadcrapping (or at least, not trying to) but I just noticed on iTunes that “Village of the Giants” and “Rocket Attack USA” are up for sale, from Volume 27.
See, this is what I’m talking about. Now if I could just get “Operation Double 007” and “The Magic Sword” and maybe “Revenge of the Creature”, I would be a happy camper for now. At least until Volume 28.
#91 I think Gorgo, the movie, is one of the better movies featured on the show. It looks nice, has some decent effects, and a good cast. But the riffing isn’t as sharp as the rest of Season 9. It just peters out quietly as the movie goes on, and by the climax there’s nearly no huge laughs at all. It’s definitely one of my least favorites.
(By the way, I’m not a very young man myself, so I don’t know what age has to do with this.)

The Day The Earth Froze was the first ep that had me– quite literally– rolling on the floor with laughter. Yes, I mean I literally rolled on the floor with hysterics when Trace did his Bullwinkle impression, “Help me, Rocky! I seem to be on fi-er!”
My better half gave me a present of a moose beanie baby and sewed on orange and red thread to its head to represent the flames and had it sitting in a boat with red tissue paper fi-er. One of the best presents I’ve even been given. Every MSTie deserves another MSTie of her or his own!
Yay! Yay yay yay yay! I LOVE Leech Woman! I walk around the house yelling “Neil!” quite often (Or is it “Neal!”?). I have only seen Gorgo the one time, and I am glad that I will get to own a copy. Love Day the Earth Froze too. I’m not keen on season 1 eps, but I do watch them on occasion, and I’ve never seen Moon Zero Two.
My only wish from Shout would be to get more of seasons 3 and 8!
Mind blown! Shout is slowly draining my bank account.
Now, get cracking on seducing those Toho guys. They must have a weakness! ;)

Um, perhaps I should introduce you to the 21st Century (actually, you’ve been able to do this since even last century). Just rip the DVDs and convert them using Handbrake to MKV (or whatever) to store on whatever device you want to view them on.
Takes no brains or tech smarts (I’m an old grandfather and if *I* can do it, anyone can do it). This way I get pristine copies of my shows stored away on my own media, and lock up the DVDs for safe backups (although, admittedly, I’ve never needed them after I ripped them).
#97 I’d be focused on seducing Susan Hart and whoever runs Sam Zack Arkoff’s estate. Then we’d get huge amounts of terrific episodes overflowing the boxsets.

Well aware of Handbrake and have been using it for a number of years. Actually I have some old DVD’s ripped as .mkv’s. I also have kept an .iso copy of the same ripped titles in case I want to re-encode them someday.
As you admit you don’t touch the DVDs after you rip them. Which is kind of why I would rather just be able to purchase digital in the first place. That way I don’t have to buy the box set, do the ripping myself and then resell the physical discs that I no longer need.
I’m definitely no prude, but I also prefer not to get into the grey area of keeping copies of something that I sell off. Not to mention the fact that it’s simply easier to have a copy that is ready made for me to purchase and download.
