Home run! Didn’t think we’d ever see Moon Zero Two, my 2nd-favorite Season 1 ep. Earth Froze was also at the top of my list of hoped-for releases. And Leech Woman and Gorgo are two of my faves from the Sci-Fi era, so I’m deliriously happy!
That list says “Firemaidens” is unlikely, eh? Surely Timmy is behind this. Too bad, my tape of it isn’t good.
So, an excellent set to look forward to! Brilliant! And I suggest “Agent from H.A.R.M. as an XXX–Adam totally felt that girl up. That’s at least foreplay!

SIX EPISODES?!!!!! One being GORGO?!
I wonder if the Mitchell and TBTWD episodes will have bonus features. Maybe a Life After MST3K feature by Joel.
I had a feeling it was Sampo time. And Shout! throws another curve ball at us, Moon Zero Two. I don’t think anyone saw that coming. After the upgrade of Slime People, it will be nice to have a pristine copy of Moon Zero Two, the other Season 1 I have a crappy copy of. (And my Black Scorpion copy isn’t that great either, now that I think of it)
Before we realize it, we’ll be at Vol. 41. All fans will have their individual tastes satisfied, as all the episodes will be released then. Maybe the sets will peter out before then, due to rights issues, but Shout! keeps surprising.
I suspect that if we are fortunate enough to get Vol. 41, Diabolik will be on that set. It would only be fitting.
Just some random thoughts (assuming anyone is reading down this far):
To the people who wished there were more old guys here – count me in! I’m 54 (I guess to you young kids out there, 54 is practically ancient). It does depress me when I see audience shots in the Rifftrax live shows and there does not appear to be anyone there over 30. So where are the older fans? Come on! There are millions of MST fans around the world. They can’t all be under 30? Can they?
To the digital people: Digital, smidgital. I ALWAYS prefer hard copies over downloads. That’s right folks. I read REAL books, listen to music on CDs, and watch movies on DVDs and Blu-Rays. Always will. To hell with unreliable downloads and no special features. With hard copies, you get all the bells and whistles – including liner notes. I would like to see you download the models of Gypsy, Crow, and Servo. Anyone with me on this?
Finally, just another big round of thanks to Shout! for all of the great work they are doing. We are more likely than ever before to get every episode released (and re-released) on DVD because of them.
THE DAY THE EARTH FROZE– sounds like something I’d like to experience as a break from this HEAVY HEAT that’s been going on for most of this summer. Great weather for GIANT GILA MONSTERS.

So…what can we conclude from this list? It is very likely that we will get all titles owned by CBS, MGM, Universal, Warner Brothers, Kit Parker, and Wade Williams. The Public Domain films should come through with the exception of The Screaming Skull which seems to have problems regarding the music in the Gumby short.
Next up would be possible films. If Shout! can work their magic with Warner Brothers, MGM, CBS, and Universal, hopefully they can persuade other major companies to join the bandwagon. So, for now let’s consider the following owners as possible: LionsGate, Columbia/Sony, Paramount, Olive Films, Dark Sky.
Then there is the “when Hell freezes over” category. Our usual friends are here: The Samuel Arkoff Estate, Susan Hart, Roger Corman, and Toho. Sooner or later they will give in…right?…RIGHT?…
Finally, there are 3 films where the rights’ owner is unclear – especially Pumaman. We can only hope that the forensics division at Shout! will solve this mystery.

Um, we old guys ALWAYS read down this far .
And sorry, kid, but I have tennis shoes older than you. I don’t know if you should feel better or worse knowing that, but when my wife and I watched the original run of MST3K we already were older than the present day audience. Still, we go to all the live events (although we’ll skip “Troopers” because it just ain’t the cheese we like — first time to miss an event ever. We probably would have done the “Twilight” thing, though).
And while I understand the addiction to physical media, there’s no need to be a Luddite about it. My entire house is networked with all the movies I own on hard drive, able to bring up at any whim we have. Having the entire run of MST3K available at our fingertips is a heck of a lot easier than tracking down a DVD. And although I have (literally) thousands of DVDs none of them are in the house proper anymore (that’s why we have an attic). Need the room but still have them in case of real disaster (although I also have all my digital stuff backed up and am now moving a lot of backups to the cloud).
If *this* very old grandfather can feel comfortable with that, there’s no reason you youngster can’t handle the transition (heck, with our iPads my wife and I, both huge book collectors and readers, have nearly switched over to electronic completely. And she’s a former LIBRARIAN!)
My mind has been blown… Shout Factory continues to surprise and impress!!! :D

Agree about Forbidden Planet but, unlike Mike Nelson, I still
think that (as a for the time) This island Earth was a serious
cinematic effort and way ahead of most of the ’50s era movies.
As also was a great classic, the original The Thing From Another
World (unlike the over the top remakes). Original even has a brief kinky pretend girl ties up boy bit (hey, it was the ’50s).

I know this is off topic, but as long as we’re giving love to Shout Factory for this and other MST3K releases, I’d like to thank them for a couple of other releases. Their release of the entire run of SCTV is amazing. If you’ve never treated yourself to those shows, by all means go and get copies of these DVDs as quickly as you can. Also, this summer they’re releasing 13 episodes of the ABC SNL knockoff Fridays which I fondly remember from my high school days but haven’t been able to watch since. Shout is capitalism at its best!

For XXX, Outlaw! It’s chestalogical…
I’m concerned about the inclusion of Mitchell and The Brain that Wouldn’t Die with v.28. Usually, out of print Rhino titles are sold individually under the Shout! Select banner so those of us who already have those titles don’t have to double-dip. If the bonus episodes contain some significant special features, that would be o.k. But if the bonus episodes are the same as the Rhino releases, I don’t want to pay a higher price for v.28 when I already have the bonus episodes. I hope Shout will clarify this soon.

Word. To flip Loren’s comment around – physical schmysical. The huge pain in the patoot that is a physical DVD collection was hit home to me when we moved house. I’d long since run out of shelf space at the old place, so had piles of DVDs spilling over on whatever surface I could spare, which disinclines you to actually dig out what you want to watch and pop it in the player. Then packing them all into boxes, lugging them across town to the new house, and god knows when I’ll get around to unpacking and organizing them. I’ve been meaning to do a mass conversion of all my DVDs to digital and find a way to stream them to my TV, so I’m envious of your set-up.
The bigger and cheaper hard-drives becomes, the less I understand the weird fetish many people still have for physical DVDs. It’s really just the content you’re buying. The physical media it’s delivered on was always an inconvenient but necessary evil, but not so necessary anymore. Besides, a shelf full of tacky plastic DVD cases is a good way to ugly up a room. Who knows, if more people were on board with Cinematic Titanic’s original “download only” delivery model, freeing them from the costly burden of manufacturing and managing physical DVDs, maybe they’d have made more money from their endeavor.

I found myself at a similar crossroads a few years ago. Our children are 10 (boy) and 5 (twin girls) respectively. My wife and I are both 37 year old career oriented people who just don’t have a ton of spare time anymore.
The idea of being free’d up to carry around a device and read (in her case) or watch (in my case) is very liberating. I’m not anti physical media. I still rip CDR’s for my car. I’m not that advanced that I have a docking station elaborately set up for my commute.
But the days of me consuming media the way I would’ve ten years ago or even five years ago have changed almost completely. I spend most of my free time on my Mac watching media/surfing or on my phone doing the same.
In 1996 I was 20 years old and when the first VHS releases of MST3K hit the stores I was there to buy all three of them. I couldn’t have imagined that 17 years later I would be able to use a PC to download content like I am able to in 2013. I can go pick and choose which episodes I want to buy — this is badass. There’s just no two ways about it.
My fandom of this show stretches back some 20 years or so..probably to the summer of ’93 when I discovered the midnight re-runs (actually 11 PM CST for me). I can still remember going with my mom to buy bulk packs of Sony or Fuji VHS blanks to record the show because I was sure it would never be on forever and I wanted to hold onto them because I couldn’t forsee a future where it would all be available for me at my fingertips.
Well — I was wrong.
I think Shout Factory should start providing us with shelves to put these DVDs on.

Since a new Godzilla movie is due next year, maybe Toho will be generous and give clearance to “Sea Monster” and re-clearance to “Megalon” as a promotional gimmick. (Hey, who knows? They might go for it.)
As for the hard cases, if Shout! offered them a fifteen-minute bonus segment for them to offer a rebuttal (along with a big bunch of cash), would they accept?
And for the unknown ones, just announce a release and see who comes out of the woodwork with an ownership claim, then make the deal.

Wow, I am loving this set already. Been waiting for Day the Earth Froze for
awhile and I’m glad its finally on DVD, ditto for Leech Woman. Love both
of those episodes. Gorgo and Moon Zero Two are nice surprises. Guess
this means Shout made a deal with Warner if they got Moon Zero. Gorgo
is also quite the surprise, didn’t expect that one anytime soon either.
Shout Factory just keeps getting the job done on MST3K.

Regarding “Mitchell” and “The Brain That Wouldn’t Die” as a Bonus Disc.. I wonder if that will take the place of the Shout! Select titles as a way for Shout! to release old Rhino titles.
Another miracle from Shout! Gorgo! With an interview with Leonard Maltin? That would be so cool. I read somewhere that the director did the film because his kid wanted to see a movie where the monster won. I loved the last scene where Mommy and Son walked off into the waves together to the tune of the guys’ “are we there yet” – type chatter.
As for the rest, well, I’ve always wanted a good copy of Moon Zero Two, and the other two are going to be interesting.
Now, how to coax Joe Don Baker to be interviewed. Shout! got Sandy Frank – why not Baker?

Wow, Gorgo was a big question mark, but it’s gotten the green light. That’s another of my VHS copies I won’t need for long. Leech Woman I had on tape, but I accidentally taped over it with an MTV VMA ceremony (oops). Earth Froze has been really popular, and I’m hoping to see it soon. Moon Zero Two opens up all the Warner movies, meaning all of season one is open, plus Lassie!

Since it says “a” bonus disc… this got me thinking. Has Shout ever released 2 episodes on 1 disc? Did Rhino ever (not counting those double-sided discs) Of course I know there’s enough room for 2 episodes on 1 disc, but I’m starting to wonder if Shout! has something else in mind with this release? Possibly a re-edit of those 2 classic episodes.. something like going straight from 512 into 513 without the credits of 512? I’ve seen other shows/networks that do things like that for 2-part episodes. Or.. and I certainly hope this is not the case.. what if this bonus disc will only have the host segments and cut out the movie portions? (Just thinking outside of the box.) Hopefully Shout will clarify this soon.
As for the rest of the set… looks solid. Although I’m a little ticked off because I LITERALLY just watched my crappy ol’ VHS tape of Moon Zero Two LAST WEEK! Wish I had waited on that one. Oh well.

I agree with Loran Alan Davis’s take on media delivery and don’t understand the FETISH so many have with hard drives and cloud storage. Perhaps they consider them 100% reliable. They are not.
I have plenty of shelf space and don’t mind DVDs one whit and my storage area looks fantastic.
Let’s see, should I read A WRINKLE IN TIME on a kindle or should I enjoy the Easton Press incarnation?
Just like buying a 72 RPM record, I am not paying for just the content, I am paying for the medium transport as well.
Often, these items are investments should I choose to sell them later. Which I have. At great profit.
I am reminded of Dan Clowe’s “Ghost World” as film and the part played by Steve Buscemi… “Seymour” has a refined sense of worth in music and the medium, but is surrounded by tech goth dolts who JUST DON’T GET IT.
Also, a “Luddite” would not use DVDs, etc, – that term gets thrown around a lot, inappropriately. I’ve never understood that pervasive error. A true Luddite wouldn’t be able to read this site.
Digital bigotry is damned annoying and gets more annoying every year. I say that as an experienced programmer/techie/hacker/Archie McPhee PolyOg space slug of the 21st century.
I use everything… paper to plastic to electrons, but I sure as hell don’t condemn the paper and plastic.
I have LED ZEPPELIN IV on iTunes. I have it on vinyl not three feet away from me.
Which do I “value” the most?

Shout!’s continued release of DVDs has my undying support, and I think most here agree and are excited about the DVDs, accusations of being fetishistic Luddites not withstanding.
I meant to type 78 RPM. This is what happens when muscle memory toggles between a phone keypad & a calculator ten key format. :-D
Just so all of you know… the bonus materials on this set are colossal! An epic documentary, plus several other Ballyhoo goodies. Look for the second part of Shout’s press release in the near future…
I’m not exactly sure where the adversarial nature here has crept in but I do hope it wasn’t fostered by my posts.
In short, I don’t know why both digital downloads and physical media can’t co-exist. I tend to do more digital downloads and have for a few years now. But I’m not against there still being box sets. I probably will eventually re-purchase some if not all of the Shout! releases when the opportunity presents itself.
I don’t think there is any “digital bigotry” if anything there’s a mistrust of the digital being available. Whenever it is mentioned there’s this recoil like “all of your dvd’s are going away and you can’t use them anymore…HAHAHAHAH”. Sorry, that’s just weird.

Well, let’s see if I get the last word. We were watching The Day the Earth Froze when I checked out the new lineup. That didn’t cause us to stop the movie just because a better print is coming. But we definitely like the lineup. I keep looking for Track of the Moon. Beast, though. Ah well, another day then.
