Weekend Discussion Thread: Stuff You Noticed on Repeated Viewings

Alert reader Mark opines:

“Little things you’ve noticed.”
For instance, watching “Soultaker,” I LOVE the scene where both Zach and Natalie get on an elevator to get back to their bodies on an upper floor. But the elevator they get on is already occupied by a young (orderly? intern? nurse?) man in ‘scrubs’ who has a Walkman on, and because he thinks he’s alone, begins animatedly rocking out to the music on the Walkman.
It’s at this moment that the fun begins: if you watch Natalie closely as the elevator ride begins, you can see her purposely looking down and away from the actor rocking out to the music, because every time she glances back towards him, you see her unmistakably starting to break up.

Have you noticed something?

It wasn’t until the second or third time through that I noticed the vanishing brunette from Village of the Giants. When the group of troublemakers first come to town, there are four guys and four gals. But from the time that they first grow big until just before they shrink again, the one brunette girl is nowhere to be found.

Does anyone know why? Did the actress not want to wear the revealing outfits? Did her scenes just get cut?

I’d share some of them, but I prefer to lower the tone of these weekend get-togethers with pedantry and prolixity, not moral degradation.

    The Final Sacrifice –

In the scene where Rowsdower is gassing up his POS pickup and the cultists are approaching we see the Rowsdowermobile lurch into motion and tear down the road at speeds upward of thirty kph (it’s Canada, ya know). After watching the scene a time or two it becomes obvious that the cultist’s car is holding back when it could have easily overtaken Rowsdower and Troy in spite of the empty beer bottles Troy is throwing out. Maybe the guy had just made the last payment on his chase car and didn’t want to tangle with a truck that obviously had nothing to lose?

A similar disappearance happens in Horrors of Spider Island. Gladys and Doreen are introduced as a duo, but after the crash, no Doreen. Did she die? If so, why is she never mentioned?

Since alert reader Mark mentioned “Soultaker,” one of the nuns at the bus stop is actually a man (listed as Eugene Walter in the credits). So many questions — was he a friend of the director and had always wanted to play a nun? Were there no other elderly women willing to be extras? At any rate, bravo, Eugene.

    ,
Only last night I ran across some mention of Horrors etc., that specifically mentioned that a LOT of it, nine or ten minutes of nudity, was cut when they decided to distribute it in the U.S. That was over and above its being a mash-up of an original movie that wasn’t going anywhere with the tacked-on spider story that was supposed to salvage the project. Be grateful for ANY coherence in that dismal thing.

It wasn’t until I watched Catalina Caper a second time that I noticed the amazing fail of Carol Connors lip-syncing the “Book of Love” number. She does try, and sort of manages, but finally loses her place entirely, and just gives up with a laugh. (Not that I really blame her – it was windy enough that she kept having to pull her hair away from her mouth, and that must have been distracting when trying to remember lame lyrics.)

    From IMDb:

“Vicki London was originally cast with a larger role, but declined to disrobe in preproduction, so her part was changed with Joy Harmon’s, and much of London’s subsequent screen time was cut. Her agent kept her in the movie at full pay, while London didn’t seem to object to what happened, since she saw the whole thing as forgettable.”

Thought he was listed in the credits, as one of the “producers” (ie. cash sources), but IMDb had no record. Clearly someone who thought he’d get a “cameo” for his involvement, and…
Can’t remember whether M&tB noticed enough to riff on it.

Isn’t that the brunette girl who has only one walk-off scene wandering by the camera outside the theater, as they leave just before Beau Bridges has his fight with Tommy Kirk? (And still never appears in any of the other giant scenes?)
I didn’t remember her in any of the early scenes, and thought “Where did SHE come from? Was she a new recruit?”

In “Mitchell” there’s a very brief snipped of a news report about how Deany was killed. Since the actual scene of Deany being killed was cut, it’s very easy to miss.

Which means that Joel and the ‘bots: somehow don’t comment on the fact that there’s a naked and bleeding Richard Kiel bobbing in the pool at a swingin’ teen party; and miss a golden opportunity for a poopie joke or two (or five).

One that wasn’t clear when I first saw it, but after I learned about the production it’s hard not to see: In Merlin’s Shop the second half is obviously a film from a decade earlier with cheaper-looking film. When it cuts to Merlin the print looks cleaner and the audio’s better.

It’s much more obvious at the end with the spliced together “Merlin Saves Everyone” ending as opposed to the original “Everyone dies” ending.

I was quite surprised when I noticed a woman being exposed by having her top ripped off during the rando fight scene during the chaperone’s dance in the Creeping Terror. I would hope she was paid well but knowing the details of this production she probably wasn’t even reimbursed for the top.

while not MST3K related, sometime ago, me and my dad were watching a short (from the late 1940’s). it was about how Congress works. my dad pointed this out to me. one of the scenes, showed the VP then (Alben W. Barkley) at his desk and in the background, there was someone smoking and pouring himself a stiff drink.
see 3:50 or so into the film.

Near the end of ‘Laserblast’, the kid is standing in the middle of a city, and there is a building behind him with a storefront that says S.M.C. Cartage Co. on it. It sounded familiar and it turns out that it was the place where the St Valentines Day Massacre happened in 1929. They were probably shooting on a set where a movie about the massacre had been recently filmed.

It, or its replacement, is still there on Google Street View; go to “4700 Speedway Marina del Rey CA” and spin the view around a bit.

Final Sacrifice was shot in Water Valley and Cremona, Alberta; unfortunately, only Cremona’s on Street View, and I’m not getting a whole lot outta that. If that was Cremona in the opening scenes, they need to reproduce that sign post ASAP and offer Final Sacrifice tours, get ’em some tourists up there, maybe score a Timmy’s (although if you look at Street View, they DO already have a curling rink).

Oh, don’t start…nobody so far has given a shout-out to all the police cars that switched make and model in mid-chase, the steering wheels that moved from left side to right side, and trying to sort out the stock footage of jet fighters magically transforming in mid-pass from F-86s to P-80s to F-102s….

In Final Justice the DJ voice on the radio at the beginning who says “Good luck, boys” is also the voice of the failure pilot on the plane.

The boom mic during the pool scene of Parts the Clonus Horror. That one is a doozy.

Speaking of boom mics, until I saw the boom mic in “Mitchell”, I never realized just how powerful an illusion is created by even the cheesiest of movies. On an intellectual level, I know I’m watching a movie — I know the characters are just actors, the sets are fake, and there are stage lights, cameras, and crew all around. But it still feels like I’m watching a slob cop having dinner at the home of a mob-connected importer. Then that boom mic shows up, and suddenly I can SENSE the presence of the crew, and SEE two actors at work in front of a camera.
