“Gila Monster” Single-Disk Details UPDATED – AGAIN!

coverRhino tells us the single-disk version of episode 402- THE GIANT GILA MONSTER will be available only at rhino.com for a price of–get this: $7.98 (cheap!). Our source also tells us it will only be available for a limited time (essentially until the limited pressing runs out–although we were also told that if sales are really strong initially, they may do a second pressing).

UPDATE 1: We can now confirm this report, which says that Dr. Forrester (Trace Beaulieu) and TV’s Frank (Frank Conniff) are also in the “Message from Joel” and that Tom Servo and Crow also have speaking roles.
And for those who did want a true replacement for the previous disk, we’re told the “Photo Gallery” (featuring a collection of historic Best Brains still photos)–which was included on the old Godzilla vs. Megalon disk, is also included on this one.

UPDATE 2: Ahead of schedule, the disk is now available for preorder!
Thanks to alert reader Mike M. for the tip!

UPDATE 3: We’re now being told that the disks will not actually ship until Feb. 11. “Since this is a limited edition special run we need extra time to get the product ready,” our source said.

UPDATE 4: As several of our readers have discovered, the release of the disk has been delayed for at least 2-4 weeks. As soon as we can get some kind of definite date we’ll post it here.

UPDATE 5: Our source at Rhino now foresees a ship date of Feb. 25. Stay tuned…

UPDATE 6: Many, many readers have written in and posted on the Comments section here that they’ve finally received shipment confirmations from Rhino. Hurray! If you haven’t received yours yet, keep an eye on your inbox!

This is great news. I wonder if it will be limited to one per household? My roommates better find another way to get ahold of a copy if that’s the case!

I’m impressed that they are going to do any sort of cover for the single disc. Will it be in a regular keep case, or it is in a cardboard sleeve? (I have spare cases, but it’s nice to know what to expect…)

Awesome! I just wrote Dr. Rhino asking about this the other night after reading the Shout! Factory take-over news. Guess I have my answer.

Good to know. I kept refreshing rhino, amazon, and bestbuy.com looking for this to show up. For that price, I bet there’s no case. I was a little disappointed when I got my Cinematic Titanic disc in the mail in a paper sleeve.

Keep up the great work keeping us up to date.

  9. Don’t bother with amazon or any other retailer. Rhino said from the get-go that this was not going to be a true commercial release, but a limited on only from Rhino.

If the image is anything to go by (and not just a mock-up), I’m expecting a hard cardboard sleeve with artwork, not an amray.

The question for me is: does that $7.98 include shipping? If not, how much will *that* be? Because even though I need to get 10.2 ’cause I missed the original, at $8, I might want this anyway just for the novelty.

Sweet! And $8 is a good deal for a single episode. Can’t wait!

Class act, Rhino! Whether you love them for such a long run of MST releases, or hate them for their 3 or 4 screw-ups, this is one final farewell act that shows Rhino still has a soul.

    Bravo, I say. Bravo!

Awesome. I was sure this thing was going to be $20. Rhino, I love you! Now I wish they’d been able to hold on to MST3K instead of Shout! getting it. Shout! better be good. Damn good. :!:

Will be ordering as soon as. I’m sure shipping won’t be more than $5. That still beats the maximum price I was hoping I’d have to pay (about $15).

Hopefully this will not be in a paper sleeve. But I guess we can all print our own.

  14. Any news on if it’ll be available to overseas fans? It’s nice and cheap at least so if I get shafted on shipping it won’t feel so bad!

Atfer poking around the Rhino website for a bit, it seems that they’ll only ship the majority of their stuff to the US. So, as usual, we’re left out in the cold.

What was the problem with The Killer Shrews disc. I have Volume 7, but have never watched this episode. Going to bed right now, no time to watch my copy, but I’m hoping I haven’t missed out on some long-dead exchange program. What problems should I look for in my copy?

In response to trumpysmagicsnout and Alex Smith, UK I just placed a pre-order for the disc from the UK and everything seems to have been accepted. So seemingly good news for us overseas fans…

  24. Sonny says:

Done. Pre-ordered, and it feels so good…$12.24 including tax, s/h – and I’d MUCH rather pay that than the full amount for the box set…

Echoing what’s been said many times already – thanks, Rhino. This is what I’ll remember about the time you served as the holder of the MST3K license, and not any of the fumble. You went out with class.

  25. Mike M says:

    Aaron,
I might miss every last detail, but shortly after Volume 7 was released, many fans noticed that the Killer Shrews DVD was missing about thirty seconds from the start of the movie right before the credits. Many fans protested and Rhino offered a replacement disc with the FULL movie included to those who wrote in requesting one.

It did take FOREVER (it seemed) for the disc to be mailed out, but ultimately Rhino made good on their offer.

And, like Shorts Vol. 3 (Dammit! How did I miss one?!) it was only offered for a limited time.

    Hope that helps!

I noticed that many out-of-stock sets on the net list 2/11 as the shipping date.

Rhino rules. It’s as simple as that. I have to wait until Sunday to order the rest of the Rhinos I don’t have (I’m on pins and needles with this) but I’m ordering this cheap-ass DVD today!!! Sounds like an amazing release…for the fans!!

Dang! Just about had a panic attack. I clicked on the link, clicked Add to cart, but when I Proceeded to checkout it said my basket was empty. zomg what’s the problem?!!?!?! Stupid Firefox and all my script blocking, cookie management, security paranoia crap wouldn’t let me buy it.

Thank you IE for still being installed and vulnerable to being taken over by whatever code is on a website. You got my preorder in before I had to head to work.

Hey I just figured out a way around the shipping charges for “Gila” When I pre-ordered, I simply added about $160.00 worth of other product onto the order…and there you go, FREE SHIPPING.

    To Joshua:

This is a quote from the Wired blog thingy:

“Joel and the robots return to the Satellite of Love to demonstrate how to insert the new DVD into the original set without upsetting Godzilla or copyright lawyers. Dr. Clayton Forrester (Trace Beaulieu) and TV’s Frank (Frank Conniff) lend a hand from Deep 13.”

    Good question NickfromPhilly
I think I remember the three VHS titles that came out first, I want to say they were Cave Dwellers, Pod People, and THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN. They could have been released as early as 1996.

BTW I ordered The Giant Gila Monster from Rhino last night, and when I checked status today it said backorder??

So I’m assuming that Tom will not be voiced by Kevin Murphy in the new footage? Not that it’s that big of a deal, but if so, that means that the 2 camps (CT and TFC) are working together…

  38. Marc says:

Thank you so much for keeping us informed about this Satellite News! I can’t wait to see a new-to-me episode.

So, are we actually seeing Joel, Trace, and Frank reprise their roles for this mini host segment? I thought the sets were struck and that that now CT crew weren’t on super-happy-fun-fun terms with Jim Mallon.

I am confulsed – but would love to see a new bit!

  39. @ deadthyme: So I’m assuming that Tom will not be voiced by Kevin Murphy in the new footage?

If Tom’s in there, I’m assuming he’s being voiced by Josh. I think they would have mentioned it earlier if Kevin was involved.

@ Marc: “I thought the sets were struck and that that now CT crew weren’t on super-happy-fun-fun terms with Jim Mallon.”

    1) The sets are struck, but who knows how little they need to “make magic”. (As someone pointed out, chromakey could be the answer.)

    2) We don’t really know anything about anyone’s relationship with Jim right now. We have rumors and grumbling, but very little in the way of hard facts.

I’m so happy about this! This is one of my very favorite episodes.
“Sample my fist you community theater reject!” was quoted around our house for years after we first saw this episode.
Plus, I’m so excited to see Joel & co. back in their old roles even if it’s just for a few minutes! I’m looking forward to that more than anything.
I’m so happy I’m going to go sing whenever I sing whenever I sing!
I wonder if Joel had to get permission from Jim Mallon to use the robots or if Joel took a couple of Crows and Toms when he left the show. It’s possible since he is their creator.

  48. GersonK says:

I’m almost certain the bots were actually built by a fan – JoeCrow. A few months back he mentioned in a chat room that he was supplying Joel with them for an unspecified project.

The original announcement said it would be Joel, Trace and Josh. So, if they’ve got Josh, and they’re going to Deep 13, will Dr. Erhardt make his return and get to meet Frank? Or is he officially dead? Does this take place between 113 and 201 to explain Frank being around with Servo’s original voice? Or should I really just sit back and relax?
