Volume XVII Titles!

Happy Thanksgiving! Our sources at Shout! Factory have clued us in on the titles for the next box set, Volume XVII, due in March. They are:
• 101- THE CRAWLING EYE
• 415- THE BEATNIKS (with short: GENERAL HOSPITAL PT 2)
• 910- THE FINAL SACRIFICE and
• 1005- BLOOD WATERS OF DR. Z

The Final Sacrifice? But, but… “Yes, we realize that we said it would never be released,” says our source. “Why the change, you ask? Well, to be frank… We offered them more money.” Always a good plan.

Two of my favorite episodes (415 & 910), one “important” episode, and one I’ve never seen.

    Great set!

  • 6
    Opus says:

Two Sci-Fi episodes? I can deal with it if it means having Beatniks. Time to offer Sandy Frank more money.

  • 7

Ooohhh, I’m so on board with this.

While I have nearly every episode in broadcast quality condition on DVD, “Blood Waters” is not quite as good as it could be. And as much as I hate season one, having “Crawling Eye” is just too wonderful both for being the first episode, for the (kinda) good movie it actually is, and for being the last thing we see at the end of the series.

More money, particularly in this economy, is always a good strategy (hell, given the economy, just making ANOTHER offer of the same money might work in some cases).

Holy wow! Dr. Z! The Adventures of Zap and Troy!
The first episode! The beatniks…eh, not a fan of the crime/youth gone bad eps, but still, Holy Wow! Happy Turkey to all!

AWESOME!!! This news definitely brightens up my Turkey Day!!

I’m so glad Shout Factory was able to get THE FINAL SACRAFICE (after the surprising news earlier this year), and The Crawling Eye (which means Image or Wade Williams was involved!?), and THE BLOOD WATERS OF DR. Z?? And of course, THE BEATNIKS is a classic episode choice. My MSTie-geek senses are tingling indeed.

    Fantastic work again Shout Factory!

    Opus (#6) -

Sandy Frank doesn’t own the rights to any of the Japanese movies/TV shows used on MST. Shout Factory has tried getting the Gamera movies from the Japanese company that owns them, but with no luck so far.

    Super Agent Icky Elf says:

This is sooooo awesome!! I posted on the CT site the other day (jokingly) that Shout! should tell us the next set titles.

My copy of “Crawling Eye” stopped playing, I’ve only seen half of “Final Sacrifice” and have never seen “Blood Waters”.

This is the best Thanksgiving ever!!

  • 14

I wasn’t expecting this announcement for another couple of weeks! i think we all saw The Beatniks coming, but the rest suprised me.

  • 15
    mpbileunit says:

I didn’t think The Final Sacrifice would be possible along with the Crawling Eye ?! Could it be that Shout Factory is yanking our chain a little about rights issues ! Love it ! Keep the sets a coming !

What is the estimated release date?

  • 26
    weepydonuts says:

This is wonderful! I love both of the SciFi era episodes and I’m pretty certain that I’ve never seen the Comedy Central ones. Shout Factory forever!

  • 27
    pablum says:

Wow. Ep 101. Never thought it would see the light of day since we’re hitting the 17th volume (plus the individual releases) and we haven’t seen it listed until now.

Final Sacrifice on DVD which was claimed at one point to be improbable. Shout finally used the greatest rights negotiator tool around, more cash.

I’ll also finally get “I killed that fat bar keep!” in high quality. Always a good thing.

Blood Water of Dr. Z? Eh, I’ll take it but I’d always prefer CC era material as just about all late era Sci-Fi material has really good fan copies available (including Final Sacrifice).

  • 28
    The Professor says:

Wowie wowie wow WOW!!! What an announcement! Shout just keeps on getting better and better at this.

  • 29
    Johnny Ryde says:

    I’M GONNA MOON YOU!!!!

I’ve actually never seen the MST version of The Beatniks, just the original. So this will be fun.

And I have to admit that when I saw THE FINAL SACRIFICE, I immediately did a mental check to see if it was April 1st, based on the fact that this at one point was stated to be definitely not coming to DVD.

I haven’t watched Dr. Z since it aired on Sci-Fi, but I am looking forward to enduring it once again.

Ah, yes, my friend the squee-gee. I love you.

Rowsdower? Rowsdower! I am excited for this, and not just because of Rowsdower. Some very good eps in this set. Now we just need the extras and we’ll be all set.

  • 32
    Droppo says:

Love The Beatniks and The Final Sacrifice! 101 has MST-historical significant. And even though I definitely prefer the 3 CC era DVD’s and 1 Sci Fi ep model…I actually like Dr. Z. The “sargasm” thing always gets me.

Now, my reaction to a MST DVD collection wouldn’t be complete without the following:

    Dear Shout Factory,

Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please release MASTER NINJA I and MASTER NINJA II.

You have my personal vow that I will buy two copies of any collection that includes Master Ninja.

    Thank you,
    Droppo

  • 38
    turkeyschmo says:

    This sounds good.

I don’t have Final Sacrifice but I’ve seen it a few times, and I like that one.

I have the Beatniks, but it’s on tape, so this is good.

Don’t remember if I’ve seen Bloodwaters of Dr. Z or not, so it’ll be fresh.

And I’ve DEFINITELY never seen Crawling Eye, and first ep, too.

Is it known yet what the extras will be on this set? Are they going to have the Crow vs. Crow that Trace and Bill did? I certianly hope so. That will be all kinds of awesome.

  • 40

This one’s much better than the somewhat dissapointing choices of episodes in the new Vol. XVI.

  • 41
    Mr. B(ob) says:

Hey, Sampo, thanks for…you know ;) . Glad it worked for you.

    Happy Turkey Day, MSTies!

    @derm #1 What’s everyone’s Turkey Day viewing schedule?
We’re watching Hercules Against The Moon Men right now. Already watched Space Mutiny. More to follow, maybe with a break here or there for some other cool stuff. Watched What’s Up, Tiger Lily? and Robot Vs. Aztec Mummy and Manhunt In Space over the past few nights.

As for the new Volume XVII titles, I’m very excited about The Crawling Eye. It was one of only two network shows I wasn’t able to catch on the network, Comedy Channel/Central. First time I saw it was at the first Convention-Con. Got a tape of it from other MSTies after that, but there’s nothing like a good commercial release. Beatniks is another solid episode.

I’ve never understood why Final Sacrifice is a favorite with some fans. The movie is dismally dull and just saying “Rowsdower” two-hundred times is not the best comedy ever done on the show. It’s an okay episode, but many of the 1980s-1990s movies done on the show were for me less fun than the older campier stuff. Still, any new episodes on DVD are good. Bloodwaters Of Dr. Z should be fun.

I haven’t watched any of these episodes in years so I’ll be very happy to have this set.

Now, how about some Season 2 Lippert movies on the next set?

  • 42
    happy says:

Im with you on the Lippert titles and or Rocket Attack USA # 41
    # 40 – Volume 16 is a great set too by reactions from the MSTies
I feel this huge elation over Crawling Eye..its not only a favorite episode of mine, but I like it stand alone too…to me its an atmospheric film on a low budget
I do like Final Sacrifice , probably not as much as others but I like it..heck I like all these …I can stare at this post of the titles forever

  • 43
    Mr. B(ob) says:

I’m now on Godzilla Vs. Megalon having just finished Hercules Against The Moon Men. During the last film I after getting the turkey roaster out of the oven with oven mitts I then walked out in front of the TV with the mitts to recreate the “why is he wearing oven mitts?” bit from the Hercules movie.

    bvigeant says:

Wow, this is definitely one of the best mixes ever. I didn’t think we’d see Crawling Eye ever, and of course Final Sacrifice is a classic. I have always liked The Beatniks, and Dr. Z is an okay but not great episode. I hope this has some good interview (with Zap Rosdower).

  • 49
    Canucklehead says:

Shout Factory, I once again bow down in your direction. Yet another fantastic selection of titles coming our way! I’ve seen The Crawling Eye and Final Sacrifice, but not the other two titles. I can’t wait!

  • 50
    Manny Sanguillen says:

DR Z is the one I’m excited about. I think most of us already have good broadcast quality copies of Final Sacrifice, but it’s still good to have an official one. But I think I’ve over-watched it at this point. Dr. Z though still intrigues me.

I like the colors on Dr. Z. I was surprised by the dvd I got from Skyroniter, which is pristine. I hope the colors on the official release are as good as Sky’s copy is. I finally understood the riff “Underwater photography by Zapruder” after viewing Sky’s copy.

Not to mention that everytime I watch Blood Waters, I get those beeping sounds from Dr Z’s intruments and machines stuck in my head for days.

I also have come to like the song at the beginning of Dr. Z, “World War 2 Boy”. I downloaded a part of it from some website run by the singer of that tune. I’d love to see them include the whole song as an extra.

Crawling Eye is good to have. Beatniks is decent. I see the headliners though as Dr Z & Rowsdower.

“Well, this monkfish is off the roster. He wont be able to pitch for a month”.

  • 51
    Manny Sanguillen says:

Let me throw in our turkey day schedule, beginning tonight and going through the weekend –

Not sure of the order yet, but it goes like this, as time permits –

Teenage Crimewave -(a real t-day episode)
    Crash of the Moons
    Blood Waters of Dr Z
    The Lost Continent
    Mighty Jack
    The Space Children
    Riding With Death
    Devil Doll
    The Screaming Skull
    Castle of Fu Manchu
    Track of the Moon Beast
    King Dinosaur
    The Girl In Gold Boots

I could see throwing in ‘Killers from Space’ & maybe ‘Wasp Woman’ also at some point, and maybe some shorts like ‘Drugs are like this’ or ‘Act Your Age’.

“Trying to impress his fellow Paul Lynde imitators” – from ‘Act Your Age’

  • 52
    Finnias Jones says:

    From comment #38:
“Don’t remember if I’ve seen Bloodwaters of Dr. Z or not…”

That’s the best way to describe this fever-dream of an episode. Sargassum, the weed of deceit. Some cute blondes and an amphibious dune-buggy. A moog synth on autopilot for the soundtrack.

Beatniks features no beatniks. Rebel Set at least opened in a beatnik bar/cafe.

    Shut up, Iris.

  • 53
    mikek says:

About The Blood Waters of Dr. Z. Now, I saw the start of the movie when it played on TCM a few weeks ago. I have to admit that I found it interesting up until the point Dr. Z. transforms himself into the the fish-man. Then the movie just loses me and I see as being really goofy.

  • 54
    Nsacci says:

Wow, really exciting line-up. Seen all the episodes and all are definately welcome. Love Dr. Z, can’t watch the “i could be stupider but it’d be hard” moment without a few rewinds and replays.

Is it just me or is Shout Factory offering much better episode selections and combos?

And I second Droppo, I need Max Geller on DVD.

  • 55
    Mitchell Rowsdower Beardsley says:

    WONDERFUL!

The Beatniks and Rowsdower! I can’t believe it – what a set! This is a real good one to give as a gift, as I’ve always felt Beatniks is a great ‘this is what Mystery Science Theater is’ episode to show to someone who’s never seen it. and the songs! I love this set!

Happy Turkey Day – I’m off to finish up Wild Rebels, then, I dunno!

    p.s. I love Larry Csonka!

  • 56
    zombie says:

FANTASTIC set! I’m really looking forward to this set. Some of my faves. I don’t even know why, but I loved Final Sacrafice!

  • 57
    The Toblerone Effect says:

To see and raise Katana, I first gasped at the fact that there was an announcement from SF to begin with – being the holiday weekend and all – but then I did a double-gasp when I saw what was to be on Volume XVII. I don’t care how you feel about Season 1, you have to admit getting 101 is a must! I’ve never seen it, along with Dr. Z, so obtaining these two alone will be worth the price!

And Final Sacrifice? How much more money did the people at Shout! offer the owner of that movie? Myabe he fell on hard times financially, SF came in with a higher offer than before, and he took it. Whatever the case, while I’m not as giddy about that ep as other fans, it is a pleasant suprise.

And the Beatniks? We all knew that was a “when not if” choice, but I’ve always had a special liking for that episode. Like someone already mentioned, it is a great movie to introduce someone who’s not familiar with MST3K.

Once again, Thanksgiving feels like a MST-style holiday again! Thank you SF for making this day perfect!

  • 58
    Matt D. says:

Awesome news. I’ve only seen Final Sacrifice from this list, so I’m excited. Thanks Shout!

  • 59
    CaveDweller says:

That’s an awesome set of episodes! My VHS copy of “The Crawling Eye” was kind of rough and I never dreamed I’d ever get to see that on DVD. It’s not that those first season episdoes are that great, but it’s just cool that they are coming out on DVD, which outside of “The Crawling Hand”, I never thought would ever happen. For some odd reason, I always enjoyed “The Crawling Eye”. The movie itself is so strange that it’s actually kind of fun to watch. Also, Joel’s rendition of “Whole Lotta Love” on the electric bagpipes always made me laugh. I hope maybe someday they’ll relaease “The Slime People”. That’s another episode from season 1 that I always enjoyed, for some weird reason.

As for the other episodes, “The Beatniks” was always a favorite of mine. I remember the very first time it was show was during one of the Turkey Day marathons and they showed it as a “lost episode”. For some reason, Comedy Central skipped showing it when they were showing the episodes in sequence that season.

As for the two Sci-Fi episode, “Final Sacrifice” is probably one of the funniest episodes from that era of the show. “Blood Waters of Dr. Z” is not one of the most memorable episodes, but I remember watching my tape of that one a few years ago and thinking it was really funny.

Should be a wonderful set! I can’t wait until it comes out!

  • 60

The beatniks is one if my favorite episodes. Crawling eye was a very good episode. Now they will have the first and last episode of the cc era. Final sacrifice is also one of my favorite episodes. Bloodwaters of dr z was an okay but it does have one of the funniest host segemnts. My friend the squiggy. I love you. ATTACK!

  • 67
    Loran Alan Davis says:

Maybe as a special feature, Shout! will interview Peter Breck. He’s retired and lives in Vancouver. Would love to hear his thoughts on The Beatniks and The Crawling Hand.

  • 68
    Pondoscp says:

I’m watching “Killer Shrews” now, “Earth Vs. The Spider” up next. It appears that SF is filling out the unreleased Season 1 episodes. At this rate, “Untamed Youth,” a personal favorite, should be out in a year or two! What I’d like to see in the next set: both “Master Ninjas,” “Daddy-O” and “San Francisco International.” And “Beast Of Yucca Flats” at some point would be good.

  • 69
    John Seavey says:

So…’The Crawling Eye’. Film of deceit. Oh, they called me mad for wanting to watch the first ever Comedy Channel episode. But it is they who are mad!

‘The Beatniks’. Episode of mystery. Oh, I have never seen this one, but I long to swim alongside it and watch its secret riffing!

‘The Final Sacrifice’. And it will be final. My new race of MST3K fans will conquer this planet, once I show them this classic episode!

‘Blood Waters of Dr. Z’. Soon, soon those who have never seen this episode will understand the joke in my over-the-top excitement for this upcoming set! They will know why I’m thrilled that Shout Factory made this announcement! They will fear me! Fear me!!!!!

@ # 65 Crawling Eye was an Image/Wade Williams title- with this coming out this could more more titles owned by Wade William could come out
Other WW titles include Phantom Planet, 1st Spaceship on Venus which was released, plus they also have in their library – Rocketship XM, Lost Continent, Beast of Yucca Flats, Robot Monster
Some Image titles wound up released from Alpha Video like Beast of Yucca Flats, Horrors of Spider Island , Phantom Planet , Robot Monster ..some have wound up on MST3K DVD – others I think have a chance

  • 76
    Geode says:

Well, I’m happy for everyone who is so excited about Vol. XVII, but I have to say I am mightily disappointed in the lineup on this set.

I dunno, but there are so many long-time fan favorites that are getting skipped over time and time again (Daddy-O, Girls Town, Agent for H.A.R.M., Jack Frost, to name just a few that have been talked about on this website for years), and I was hopeful that we might start seeing that list reduced.

Oh well, I’ll take everyone’s word for it and look forward to XVII, with the hope that XVIII will have at least one or two of the most wanted episodes.

  • 77

    Luke says:

I see they’re continuing with the three episode format. Wish they’d get back to four per set, but…….. FINAL SACRIFICE!!! Woohoo! Its my 1B favorite episode (1A is Fugitive Alien II, for all none of you who care).

  • 79
    Josh B. Taylor says:

    Rowsdower on DVD! Awesome!!!!

  • 80
    Bob(NotThatBob) says:

Uh, Luke… the sets have always been 4 episodes, as is this one…
    1. The Crawling Eye
    2. The Beatniks
    3. Final Sacrifice
    4. The Bloodwaters of Dr. Z

  • 81

  • 82
    Gary Bowden says:

Another great set by Shout!! Thanks Shout! Now,if only they can get Fire Maidens,Leech Woman,Escape 2000 and Daddy-O! on one set!!! Of course,I’m leaving out a whole bunch of other episodes that I like,too..I hope this new set will have a whole bunch of cool extras! Can’t wait!!

  • 83

  • 84
    Mitchell Rowsdower Beardsley says:

    Geode,

If you love Daddy-O (just like I do) you’re gonna love The Beatniks – I promise. I’ll buy your copy if you don’t!

  • 85
    Finnias Jones says:

Geode @ #76: “…but there are so many long-time fan favorites that are getting skipped over time and time again”

I thought THE FINAL SACRIFICE was THE #1 most fan requested episode. And the first nationally aired show THE CRAWLING EYE often shows up on peoples wish lists.

In our recent Weekend Discussion of themed sets I wrote that Shout Factory would never pony up the cash to get a real fan favorite like FS or Puma-man released. It’s nice to be proven wrong…

But don’t get me wrong, Geode. I like your list of 4 (Daddy-O, Girls Town, Agent for H.A.R.M., Jack Frost) more than this official line-up. I’d rather have Mamie and Nastinka at home than Zap Rowsdower and Troy.

  • 86
    Dr. Batch says:

Awesome! Getting Final Sacrifice opens the door for any episode to be released. Bravo Shout!

  • 87
    Geode says:

    Mitchell (#84) and Finnias (#85):

Thanks for the reassurances, and I’ll take them on faith. And I will certainly buy the set when it’s available.

Mitchell, I LOVED Daddy-O, and Girls Town, and all the other ones in that “teens gone wrong” genre, so I’ll be looking forward to The Beatniks and I’ll remember you when I see it.

Finnias, you are probably right about Final Sacrifice as the “most-wanted”, and after getting my most-wanted in XV (Racket Girls), I am more than happy to see others get their fave as well. It’s funny, too, that while I wasn’t intending my proposed list to be exhaustive or even a proposed set, after reading your post I started thinking about what a cool set that would make!! I guess the bottom line is that I’m just not a big fan of Final Sacrifice or, really, any of the Season 1 episodes, so I agree with you that Mamie and Nastinka would be more welcome than Zap and Troy.

Still, I agree with everyone who thinks that ANY MST3K release is cause for celebration, and I always enjoy coming to the board here to see how fans who are more knowledgeable than me react to the new announcements.

@ # 83 Seasons 2 has been hit a bit by Rhino getting the biker films & Godzilla of all titles, SF did release 211 1st Spaceship on Venus
Season 3 is hopeless with only Fu Manchu the easy picking title from that Season. It will cause us to have more 3 Mike or all Mike sets…
Season 4 is in this Volume & Rhino hit V 4 a bit too
Season 5 is the most hit upon Season – Set 16 has 2 more from the 5th
The only title I think left thats easy to get is Hercules ..maybe Sinbad
Season 6 has also had a good hit – Racket Girls , Zombie Nightmare, etc
Basically I think your comment would be better if you said Seasons 3, 8 and 9 :-)

    John Seavey says:

I gotta admit, I do think it’s a little funny that everyone keeps saying, “Oh, I wish they wouldn’t put the Season One episodes in each set. I don’t really want the Season One eps, and I wish I didn’t have to buy them.”

That’s exactly why they’re putting them in. :) Shout Factory knows that the Season One episodes are in less demand, and so rather than release an all-S1 set that would probably lose money, they’re “folding them in” with the other seasons. It’s good marketing, and as long as they keep giving us good value for the money otherwise, it’s probably not going to cost them sales.

(If it makes you happy, they can’t keep doing it too much longer–there are only seven more unreleased Season One episodes.)

    Canucklehead says:

I, for one, enjoy whatever episodes Shout Factory manages to pull out of their bin o’ surprises. As a Canadian, my exposure to MST3K was somewhat limited to some tape trading during the Sci-Fi years, so the first 7 seasons are always a treat for me. I have several episodes on disc that I can watch on my computer, but it’s not the same. I look forward to The Crawling Eye in all it’s depressing glory…

Hmmm…I don’t know about this set. The Beatniks is ok and The Final Sacrifice is overrated. I’ll wait to get it on sale or used at a decent price.

    Troy Thomas says:

101 is 1 I’ve been waiting to see. “Beatniks” isn’t all that great, but still, a movie directed by Paul Frees (the man who made the legendary Pillsbury Doughboy giggle) is worth seeing. I’m not hot on “Final Sacrifice” but “Blood Waters” could’ve been even more painful if Rick Baker did the make-up for it. Speaking of RB, “Squirm” is one I’d like to see on an SF set, along with “Deadly Mantis” and “Village of the Giants.”

Very strange. There are almost 3 times the comments on this topic than the “official” weekend discussion topic of “Thanksgiving MST traditions”.

    Troy Thomas says:

“Final Sacrifice” has prompted me to say this: I am a BIG McLARGE HUGE fan of “SCTV,” so I’m asking other MSTies if you’ve found any “SCTV” references in your favorite eps. Ones that I’ve found are the “Pirini Scloroso” joke in the coffessing scene in “Final Justice” and 3 in “Zombie Nightmare:” “Hey hoser, take off;” “Andrea Martin is in mourning;” and Mike humming the “SCTV” theme as they pan into the apartment building.

The Crawling Eye?! OMG! The 1st MST3K episode on dvd! does this mean we will get more Image Entertainment owned films on dvd? The Crawling Eye is actually the only one of these 4 that i’ve seen, and I can’t wait to watch The Final Sacrifice so I can finally understand the Rowdowser joke.

    Markedman247 says:

You can’t please everyone. If this set contained the top 1-4 eps that people wanted, someone would complain that #5 wasn’t on the list and it’s a crime against humanity.

Be thankful that you are getting some episodes. I know people are paying good money but everyone has different tastes. I would rather it be actual episodes and not a short compilation (not that there isn’t anything wrong with that).

And season 1 isn’t that bad. Josh actually grew on me after a few episodes. I wonder how things would have been different if he continued Tom Servo. He has some dead on delivery especially in “Black Scorpion.”

I like this box set idea and hope that it lasts past the tentative announcment. The “more money” virus is hopefully contagious and can affect whomever is the keeper of “Puma Man” and “Attack of the Eye (Eye) Creatures.” Although, I am certain that it’s the old man at the end of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” I have a hard time thinking that some of these cinamatic stinkburgers are being held hostage as they are precious commodities.

    Sorry for the rambling.

I was looking at that old Rhino Poll…none of these episodes are near the bottom of the poll at all :)
Final Sacrifice was # 2 with Puma Man being # 1
The next Joel popular episodes are some Season 3 episodes which seem to be impossible to get , further down but still popular was Bride of the Monster which I have a hunch that one will be forth coming..maybe Robot Monster since that is semi popular..
With Jack Frost also being up there I wouldnt be surprised to see SF shell out ‘extra $$’ to get that title like they did with Final Sacrifice

Well, Final Sacrifice! That in itself makes this a great set, and of course shout knows it so the other eps are lesser ones.
Completists will be happy with Crawling Eye… my feeling of indifference toward season one is only tempered here by the fact it is the first ep, sort of.
The Beatniks is fun, but a so so ep.
Ditto with Bloodwaters which after a great first half hour quickly sinks.

    But Final Sacrifice!

I’m not sure if I left a comment already, here’s one anyway. Zap & Troy: The Legendary Journeys will finally be on dvd! Dr. Z I can’t complain about since I slept through most of the original airing (I’m not a morning person)and only last year or so did I finally see it on youtube. About the season 1 episodes, I understand getting them out one at a time, and Moon Zero Two was at least watchable, I could accept that in a future set. I even noticed Monty Python’s Carol Cleveland in the end credits, I don’t think the best brains ever noticed her. If this set costs a little more because of Final Sacrifice, I think it’s worth it. So, eh then, eh?

#94 Troy Thomas – Girl in Gold Boots. While Pearl’s trying to be accredited, she tells Observer to get the movie. He brings it over, and promptly goes into Bruno mode from the 3-D Dr. Tongue sketches, moving the film towards and away from the camera, until Pearl starts to hit him.

One of my favourite eps, btw. Ranks in my top 5…

    M "CLOWNS?!" Sipher says:

I’m a big fan of Season One, so seeing more of that always makes me happy. I fully grant that Crawling Eye IS easily the slowest of the non-KTMA episodes, but it’s an important episode to have on DVD, I think. Plus, the movie itself inspired an absolutely great Freakazoid! cartoon.

Dr. Z contains one of my all-time favorite in-theater bits, the extended discussion (and sulk) over Tom’s “Catfish Hunter” riff. It’s so delightfully meta, and a very season-1-ish gag… it just FEELS like the kind of thing three guys trapped together for so long would end up doing -coming up with little “rules”- in a self-defeating attempt to retain their sanity.

Beatniks? One of the best episodes from an era that really I’m not wild over. (Not BAD, just… not my favorite.) Teens-in-trouble films are usually good for laughs, especially the sad attempts at portraying teen entertainment… you can just hear the studio suits going “This is ‘hep’, right? does is ‘swing’?”

    Final Sacrifice. Nuff said.

Add my vote for Jack Frost, Agent for H.A.R.M. and Track of the Moon Beast. How about The Painted Hills? I’m a big Lassie fan.

I hope someday we have a Gypsy figure too. We don’t have to show all of her. After all, we’ve only got the upper half of Crow.

Rowsdower (#114): if Shout releases any Rhino episodes, I hope they do it with integrity and don’t force those of us who own them already to buy them in new sets. I would not be happy buying sets with an already-owned episode or two just to get some new ones.

Now, if they wanted to re-release old Rhino sets that’s fine, as long as they don’t slip in a previously unreleased episode to force fans to double dip.

I think the only episodes that may prove impossible to be released at this point are the Japanese monster movies. Perhaps all the rest of the Japanese episodes. With the major brush-up created by Godzilla vs. Megalon’s release. Plus the other things I’ve heard about the Gamera people’s reaction to Shout’s requests. I don’t think we’re going to be seeing too many in future volumes.

Perhaps the only one that will see the light of day is Invasion of the Neptune Men.

Iggy Pop's Brother Steve Pop says:

Blood Waters of Dr. Z? Don’t think I’ve ever heard of that one.

Just kidding. What a great lineup! I’m really looking forward to this.

@ Travis H (#12): “Sandy Frank doesn’t own the rights to any of the Japanese movies/TV shows used on MST. Shout Factory has tried getting the Gamera movies from the Japanese company that owns them, but with no luck so far.”

Are you sure? It seems to me that although the Japanese studios would own the rights to the original films, Frank would own the rights to his dubbed and re-edited versions. Of course, I don’t know what his actual arrangement with the Japanese studios was/is, but that’s the way I understand these things usually work. I’m guessing to release the Frank versions on DVD, Shout Factory would need to go to the Japanese studios for the underlying film rights, and to Frank for rights in his specific American versions.

  • 126
    John Seavey says:

Basically, the explanation I’ve heard is that Sandy Frank didn’t copyright his dubs, because why would you copyright something that can only be used specifically with something that you already own the rights to? So when the release rights lapsed, Sandy was left without anything he actually owned.

Well, if that was his reasoning, then it’s our gain. But it does seem kind of odd. I mean, why, for instance, does Best Brains hold onto the copyright of MST3K episodes they don’t have the necessary film rights to release? Because they may have those rights at some future date, and they reasonably don’t want just anyone who can acquire such rights to be able to profit from their work for free. It seems to me that someone who put money into dubbing and editing would feel the same way.

I got my most wanted episode when “Werewolf” came out in the 20th Anniversary edition and now I’m getting #5 in my top 5 episodes, “The Last Sacrifice.” This is the best news I’ve heard in a while.

(And for those who are curious, my top 5 is as follows:
    1. Werewolf
    2. The Cave Dwellers
    3. Pod People
    4. The Brain That Wouldn’t Die
    5. The Final Sacrifice)

    hM (#134):

Wow, you’ve hit the jackpot with your list–all 5 titles have been released.

I got my #1 all-time when Racket Girls came out in XV, but I still have a lot of faves that haven’t been released yet.

    My Top 5 would be:

    1. Jack Frost
    2. Daddy-O
    3. Girls Town
    4. Agent from H.A.R.M.
    5A. The Leech Woman
    5B. Riding With Death

I’m a huge fan of Season 8, as you can see, because I thought the riffs were especially sharp that season, and I liked the Pearl/Bobo/Brain Guy dynamic–very much in the vein of the Three Stooges.

From my perspective, Shout Factory still has some work to do to get my collection where I want it. I hope that they’ll keep releasing sets until they do.
