MST during the Olympics?

We’re not sure what to make of this, but Ben Tobin over at Dirty Red Commie claims that a familiar silhouette appeared while he was watching the Olympics on August 17 between 2pm and 3:13pm Mountain Time. The figures were static and there was no commentary. He’s posted a short video to support his claim.

Update: The video has apparently been pulled from the Vimeo site. Here’s a screen capture, more can be seen on Ben’s site.

Ben says the figures only appeared on the HD version of the broadcast. What do you think? Did it really happen? Or is he trying to make an “eat” out of “C” and “H”?

Further update: Based on responses to his post, Ben now believes that it was done by somebody at the local NBC affiliate in Helena, Mont., having fun with/testing its HD channel, which this person may have thought nobody was watching. It apparently was only seen in the Helena area.

Yet another further update: As Ben points out in our comments section, KTVH has confirmed that the silhouette did appear, supposedly due to the use of second-hand equipment being used for the first time. There’s no explanation why the silhouette was on the equipment in the first place.

if it isn’t ‘real’, it’s cute and well-done.

if it is real, does this usher in an era of ‘MST-Rolling’?

He’s telling the truth because the just before the very next commercial, Jim Lampley introduced Jesus, who gave us the results of the two-man skulling prelims, in which Elvis and Bigfoot set a new Olympic record.

    Fake!

Huh, I didn’t know J. Elvis was buddies with Bigfoot. He’d make an awesome silhouette on CT!

On a slightly-but-not-really-related note, I had to keep laughing when the announcers said “double scull” or “quadruple scull.” I thought it sounded like a birth defect.

I frequently do a Google video search for MST3K stuff added and actually saw that up. I read his claim and I’d say It’s a bunch of fecal unless others come forward. If it was indeed showing for over an hour then other people had to have seen it.

If it DID happen, I’d be curious to know what the significance of it was if any. Besides the obvious absurd hilarity of it of course.

The Shadowramalympics… why the hate? Of course, we all know it’s a fake of some kind or another. Best Brains and Shout Factory haven’t got the scratch to perpetrate such a remarkable and illegal guerilla marketing scheme. I’m sure whoever did it spent just as much time and effort on it as they wanted to, it’s pro-MST ( which we should all be in favor of ), it’s harmless at worst and darn funny at best. Cute, fine, ha-ha , let’s move on.

( Oh, and I guess we now know much of what we need to know about JTYAJ )

  23. Scott says:

For somewhat at the local affiliate to put up a chyron like that would require considerably less effort than it would take for this guy to fake it. Master control can be pretty boring; it’s not at all hard for me to believe that somebody would put that on the air for a laugh (although doing it during the Olympics is pretty ballsy).

  24. Bobo "BuckDat" Briggs says:

If there was a part of the video I’d like to see, it would be the parts where (so he says) it goes to local commercial and disappears. Although it could still be faked, the credibility might be slightly higher if we could analyze…What am I talking about? This if pure plastic puppet poopy! :???:

Folks, as we approach the fall election, I must remind you to please refrain from injecting poltical commentary into comment threads, and I must also ask you NOT to fan the flames by replying to such comments when they appear.
There are many places on the intartubes where a body can get into an argument about this stuff. This is not one of them.
Repeat offenders will find their posts deleted.
    Thank you.

The shadowrama is real but the flower boxes to the right of the runners are obviously superimposed.

  41. Steve Vil says:

The flowerboxes were added digitally by NBC as paid advertising for the Flowerbox Association of America. The time clock, however, really is right in the middle of the track and seconds later runner 1662 tripped over it and broke his knee.

  42. Nutcase says:

Crow: (as one of the runners) Oh sure, no need to use the REST OF THE TRACK!!!!

Servo: Why are they bunched up like that anyway? As Crow said they have the rest of the track…

Joel: Maybe they’re like Zebras and need to stay in a tightly packed group to avoid predetors?

Servo and Crow: Oh that makes se- Huh?

I guess J&TB had to sit at the other end of the theater so the runners wouldn’t trample them.

re #44. No silly, the reason they’re on the other side of the theater is that China’s on the other side of the world.

Thats not a clock in the lower right, that’s the time code !!!

And time code is an elf that lives inside your head – TB

..they live by a code, that is usually SMPTE, which-stands-for-Society-of-Motion-Picture-and-Television-Engineers. Maybe I think that’s what keeps them in synch…… – FZ

#46 -What goofballs are you hopped up on?

Also – If China is on the other side of the world, wouldn’t J&TB be upside down on the top of the screen?

  48. GizmonicTemp says:

It’s a simple matter of quantum linear superpositioning. They’re not upside down because they exist in the USA but are simply being observed in the relative vector state of China.

    I dunno. standard bored-at-work-and-kind-of-sleep-deprived goofballs, I guess.

Beijing is at the same latitude as NYC, so they are on the other side of the earth in an east west sense not in a north south sense. but I like the squanto superior propositioning thingie too.

Hey, I crammed in a Zappa reference and an ACEG reference at the same time in a post that was vaguelly ( admittedly VERY vaguelly ) referential to the screen cap. That’s a good day’s work in my book :D
