I was there and it was a fantastic show. He only got through about half of the presentation he had, and it was clear that he was still polishing it and cutting things down. There were some good questions about which movie was his favorite to riff, if there had ever been a movie that they gave up on, and if there was a movie he always wished he could riff (he said he didn’t like to window shop). Then he showed an episode that was one of his favorites, The Beatniks, which surprised me. I think had I been given 20 minutes to guess which episode was one of his favorites, that one would never have come to mind.

It’s always awesome to see an episode in a crowd, and this crowd was very into it. I could have probably done without it, though, and just listened to him talk and reflect on his influences and how it all came together for much longer. If he ends up doing a part 2, I will definitely be making the 2 hour drive to see it.

I wonder if there was more to his reason for saying The Beatniks was his favorite episode. Things like how things went writing the show, how everyone was getting along, just the whole vibe at that time. I love that episode because everything works so well, the music in the movie, the host segments and then we have MOON he was the cherry on top. Glad you had a good time at the show last night. Now sit down and watch The Beatniks one more time and see if you can see why he picked that as his favorite episode. If you don’t “I’M GONNA MOON YA!”

While you were watching him you were thinking that you would have liked to hear more about the formation of MST3k then you realize that you really got it. It was a lot of things we have heard over the years but to see them in order gave you a real understanding of what mindset goes there. From the movie poster that made him think of the MST3k’s green screen to his being seven and obsessing about ventriloquist dummies. By the time we go to see the Young Comedians Special it made a lot more sense. Sure we MSTies have seen that set before but now you were looking for things from his past and it all made sense.

Also the man can kill a heckler like no other comment. He put two hecklers in their place in that dry way he does things. Oh and just remember its the DVD player making all the music upstairs guys.

Oh and I didn’t get to ask my question during the Q&A session. In case he is reading this instead of releasing the KTMA movies to DVD, which he has said he doesn’t want to do, how about making them CT material and reattacking City on Fire, Last Chase and especially SST Death Flight. Give us completionists some sort of bone. It was a good hour with him talking and also an unusual choice of movie. I was hoping that he would have stayed and talked over the film giving us some of the background but it wasn’t to be.

Next time it would be nice if it started earlier as well. 930 for the lecture makes for a late night for those of us who drove long distance to get there. Although I thought I had drive far I was beaten by the couple from out of state.

I’d like to also chime in and say I could have done without the episode viewing as well. As much as I love seeing the episodes on the big screen with a crowd that’s super into it, I could have listened to Joel talk about his life and creative process all night. The slides were fascinating, his comments were hilarious and the section on the vent dummy catalogues had me in tears. And that’s after traveling 2 1/2 hours after a long day at work to get there. At least for me, that was the main reason I came to the show. I’m sure Joel will probably trim down his presentation a bit, but I hope he considers just doing his presentation solo next time. Either way, I’m coming back if/when he chooses to do this again.

Captn Ross Hagen: I distinctly recall him saying I Accuse My Parents was his favorite back at the “Chaos” show in June, so unless he’s changed his mind I’m sure Beatniks isn’t his all time favorite (still nice to know that it’s at least one of his favorites).

Someone was heckling Joel? Who’d want to do a stupid thing like that?

Yeah, Joel had said that he was picking one of his favorites in selecting Beatniks. I loved the show, and also wish he would have started earlier or gone longer. It really was what Fodder at 3 was talking about, in that you might know the basic influences, but Joel went much further in explaining the more subtle points in the events that ultimately led to MST.

Kenneth Morgan at #6, a guy near me wasn’t heckling Joel as much as he just commented that one of the magic tricks Joel showed on the slide looked like a “butt plug.” Joel just laughed it off, but when someone else made a comment (I forget what the comment was), Joel told the guy to sit near the “butt plug” guy cause he is obviously alone. So Joel basically killed two dudes with one stone; it was grand.

It was worth the drive from Jersey and worth not getting home to after 1am in the morning.

I wasn’t there or anything, but I just want to say how much I love that 2 of Joel’s favorites are 2 of mine: I Accuse My Parents and The Beatniks. Now I like him even more.

#5 I’m glad to hear from you– Some guy. I want to be clear myself, and I’m sure when any of the folks are asked about favorite movies they’ve riffed over the past 20 plus years, they have certain ones that stick out in there minds for one reason or another. I was just trying to say, more than any one movie may come up when asked. And I was trying to say that certain things going on at the time the show was done may play a bigger part then the actual movie being riffed. After all, all the movies are bad/awful to begin with, but when they did them what else was going on in their lives at the time. Contracts, dealing with the cable channel, people leaving, the Holidays, birth of a child, moving to Hollywood, changing of cast members, whatever. When you look at the volume the RIFFTRAX guys are putting out, to ask anyone of them what was their favorite riffed movie was you’d get a different answer each time. I hope this makes sense, I just wanted to say all these folks have given us so much to enjoy over the many years of dealing with bad movies for us to watch I’m sure they could never nail down any one movie as a favorite. May they all continue to Riff all the bad movies they can for our enjoyment to help us laugh and look forward to the kind of humor “CERTAIN PEOPLE WILL GET”.
