Official Vol. XXVII Press Release

Available on DVD July 23rd from Shout! Factory
MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: XXVI
Four DVD Box Set Features Previously Unreleased Episodes
The Slime People, Rocket Attack USA, Village of the Giants and The Deadly Mantis

This summer, throw a mad monster party with motley crew of the Satellite of Love as they celebrate the release of Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXVII! Available July 23rd from Shout! Factory, this 4-DVD box set is a schlock-tastic Monster Movie Mash featuring four episodes never before available on DVD: “The Slime People,” “Rocket Attack USA,” “Village of the Giants” and “The Deadly Mantis.”

Also included are all new bonus features, including an introduction by Mary Jo Pehl, an all-new featurette “Chasing Rosebud: The Cinematic Life Of William Alland,” “Life After MST3K: Trace Beaulieu,” an interview with “Village of the Giants” star Joy Harmon, an interview with “The Slime People” star Judith Fraser (Judee Morton) and four exclusive Mini-Posters by artist Steve Vance.

MSTies who order this collection from ShoutFactory.com will receive a bonus DVD as a party favor: The MST3K Serial Variety Pack Bonus Disc, which stiches together, for your convenience, the riffed installments of “The Phantom Creeps,” “Undersea Kingdom” and “General Hospital.” Fans can pre-order their copy by visiting ShoutFactory.com

There may be no finer—and certainly no funnier–meditation on monsters than this collection of episodes from the cult comedy series Mystery Science Theater 3000. As food for thought, we are served subterranean slime people, giant praying mantis’, Soviet spies and–perhaps the most terrifying of all–enormous teenagers from the disturbing menu of America’s twisted psyche. Battling these Goliaths for us with their slingshots of sass and silliness are Joel, Mike and their robot henchmen Tom Servo and Crow. The monsters are gruesome and the movies even more so, but the riffs are risible and retaliatory, proving definitively that revenge is actually a dish best served funny.

Mystery Science Theater 3000: XXVII brings us The Slime People, wherein nuclear testing has driven a race of subterranean creatures up through the sewers of Los Angeles, and after defeating the military, they erect a dome out of fog over the city to preserve an inhabitable atmosphere. A small band of heroes-in-the-making, stranded inside the dome, must fight to survive; Rocket Attack U.S.A ; a propagandistic film about a nuclear attack on New York City being planned by the scariest monster of the atomic age-The Communist; Village Of The Giants, wherein MST3K mainstay Bert I. Gordon brings to life a tale of the inventor (played by Ron Howard) of a goo that causes animals to grow to many times their natural size. When some rebellious teenagers steal and consume his concoction, they take over the town, the generation gap takes a turn for the worse; and The Deadly Mantis, a film that attempts to answer the age-old question “How can insects and movie lovers be the victims of a single hate crime?” this 1957 knockoff of the much more agreeable “Them!” proves once again that nuclear testing simply isn’t for everyone.

Bonus Features Include:
Chasing Rosebud: The Cinematic Life Of William Alland
Life After MST3K: Trace Beaulieu
Introduction by Mary Jo Pehl
Interview with Village of the Giants star Joy Harmon
Interview with The Slime People star Judith Fraser (Judee Morton)

Unless I’m mistaken, I don’t think the mantis in my pantis was caused by anything atomic.

Mary Jo is probably introducing The Deadly Mantis.

@Eegah’s Club. The mantis was a pre-historic monster, frozen in ice, and dislodged and awakened by the shockwaves of atomic testing. So it’s only a tangential atomic monster.

  11. The day they stop including mini posters is the day I start to be worried that something is up over at Shout.

I love the mini-posters that come with these sets! It seems the perfect way to bring the bots back for an encore is through these mini-posters and animated DVD menus.

Out of curiosity, does anyone do anything with these mini posters other than admire them and stuff them back in the box? I’m not that big a fan myself.

I’m not sure just posting a link to the Amazon order gives this site the “credit” (actually, I’m not really even sure how that works). If sampo or someone attached to the site gives it their blessing I’ll do the preorder on the above threaded link, but otherwise I’d still like to get the “official” site link, just because I’d like to reward the folks here for keeping the flame burning.

    @snowdog

Yeah I’m the same way, they just sit in the box. I think I will just give them to my brother. I’ve actually been thinking about getting rid of all my dvd cases and transferring everything to binders.

This thread is getting off into a tangent about the mini-posters, which I don’t mind, since I’ve been wondering what to do with mine. I like them a lot but am in the camp that admires them but then stuffs them back in the box.

We have a basement family room with a spare TV that’s currently decorated (my choice, woo hoo, Packers!!) in a sports theme. I’ve been thinking about making it an MST3K room — husband wouldn’t care for it but wouldn’t really mind, either — and these mini-posters would look awesome in a framed array. Wouldn’t have to display them all, maybe 20 or 30. One thing I noticed is that the mini-posters are a standard 5″ x 7″ size, which saves BIG bucks when buying frames.

Hey, maybe there’s a weekend discussion topic here — how would YOU decorate an MST3K-themed room? I’d get a special shelf for my figurines of Crow, Tom, and Gypsy. It would be cool to install a row of theater seats like they have on the SOL.

    Here’s the link on Shout’s site: http://www.shoutfactory.com/?q=node/217352
but man $59.99 plus $7.99 s/h just to get a disc of shorts that I mostly already have on disc vs. $40 – $45 on amazon is a no brainer….

  24. Uh, yeah, I was being sarcastic about the mini-poster enthusiasm, FWIW. I thought that would be obvious.

@MikeK You misspelled tangenital – a tangenital mantis in the pantis atomic monster.

I think if you add /ref=as_li_tf_ssw?&linkCode=wss&tag=satellitenews to the end of the product link it gives this site credit. That seems to be the common denominator.

Volume XVII is up for pre-order at Shout now. Although be warned that the “free” bonus disc somehow ends up nearly doubling the price of the boxed set. Ah, well. I ordered mine anyway.

#10, I don’t think it was atomic testing that woke the mantis. It was a volcano near the south pole that started an “Equal and opposite reaction” in Greenland. Or maybe it was just global warming.

  31. Luther Heggs says:

For an interesting change, instead of mini posters, include autographed photos of the cast and crew, in say, the first 10,000 sets of various future volumes.

They better get started on signing those pronto. You can almost feel the carpal tunnel anguish setting in. (If it’s good enough for Stephen King, it’s good enough for you. Pick up that pen!)

My biggest irrational dream is a miniature SOL model that accompanies a VERY specialized multi disc set titled, “The Tell-Tale Hart.”

As George Takei would say, “Put that in a tin box and call it heaven. Oh, myyyyyy. “

I just moved into a new house with a separate media room and one wall with be my MST wall. I’m going to hang up my autographed Scifi era cast poster and then all around it I’m going to hang up 12 of the mini posters (3 on each side) and then from time to time I’ll change out the mini posters. I’m also going to get a shadow box type frame to display my Servo, Crow, and Gypsy statues along with my piece of the Deep 13 set. The rest of the room with have a classic movie theme with old movie stills and posters. I’m glad to finally have an appropriate place for all that stuff.

I was so drawn into the movie’s explanation of the national defense radar system that I forgot the exact origin of the mantis. Who can sort out atomic testing and volcanoes when you’ve got “the Dew line” on the brain?

The Deadly Mantis = YES! Now The Horror Of Party Beach is all that’s left as far as my favorite S8 eps go.

That said, this is an all-around awesome set. I’m continually impressed with Shout! The Slime People? Yes, please!

Strangely, I feel bad for my mini-posters. I feel like, every time I slide them into the box and ignore them, it’s as if I’m hurting their feelings.

  36. The artwork for the mini-posters is more than competent. But as someone who loves movie-poster art, it doesn’t have the feel of the movie posters I like. Like the AIP posters that were better than the movies they were made for. And the mini-posters are all done in the same style and are simply same-size duplicates of the dvd case art, making them doubly redundant.

  37. organized says:

Wow, I really like the mini-posters for what they are. I have a bunch in frames and on display.

Shout Factory has been incredible with everything they’ve done. Redundancy keeps costs done, and I can’t well hang the cases on my wall.

  38. I agree, actually. I just think it’s amusing how they promote the mini-posters as a bonus when all the Shout sets have them. And they are so boring.
